So,is this true or are the guides he read just shitty?
Is being at lvl 50 really the stop of anything fun in the game and it's all a huuuuuge grind of dailies and the same dungeon over and over?

Honestly getting to 50, I feel, is the most annoying part of the game, because that's when the game starts. There's a bit of grind to get some gear, but lower leveled gear is relatively easy to come by. If you can collect the post game currency by running dungeons/primals/old coil turns/etc you can go from level 50 gear to level 110+ gear relatively fast. There's going to be a certain grind to it, but that's sort of the point of MMO's, in a way.

There are a slew of level 50 dungeons to run, plus there are larger 24 man raids like Crystal/Syrcus Tower, 8 man raids in the first and second coil of bahamut, a lot of primal fights and all that sort of thing. Basically, there are ways to break up the grind to not make it feel like you're doing the same thing over and over.

The point of MMO is to provide interaction with a large playerbase acting in the same world as you. Grinds are just there to extort money from you.

So guys, my friend got back into the game after not playing for over a year.

He has a 50 warrior and stopped playing back when the game was out because at 50 all you did was like grind the same dungeon over and over (is what he said,I don't have a 50 yet so I don't know)

He now looked at guides on how to gear up and he said it seems everything is still a huge, long, boring grind and he won't be able to see any new content at all unless he grinds for ages. He is iLevel 55.

So,is this true or are the guides he read just shitty?

If he's ilvl55 and quit back at the game launch, then all of 2.1 to 2.4 is new content to him. i60 gear drops in Pharos Sirius, Copperbell Hard, and Haukke Hard—the hard mode dungeons are not simple repeats of the old dungeons. i70 drops from the Lost City of Amdapor, Brayflox Hard and Halatali Hard—also not repeats of anything he did before i55. Crystal Tower drops i80, and it was never run in the launch game. i80 is also drops from Hullbreaker Isle, Tamtara Hard and Stone Vigil Hard. First Coil of Bahamut is clearly something he didn't do, and that's i90 territory. Moogle Mog, Leviathan, Ramuh, and Shiva are not 'old content' from his perspective either, since they were added after his departure. Wolves Den and Frontlines PVP are also not old content to him. Syrcus Tower is accessible once he hits i70; the Second Coil of Bahamut is within reach once he hits i90, which is easy with Syrcus Tower and Soldiery gear.

If what he means is that he can't play the latest content without going through all of the 'not latest' content, then the complaint is legitimate. But that he can't get to 'new content' without endless grind? From where he left the game there is a wealth of 'new content' that he has not done.

It's never been 3 months. 2.2 was the closest at 3 months and a week, but usually it's closer to 4. This is the first time they've actually managed it.

was the date for 3.0 announced? if not then i feel like we're gonna be on 2.5 for a while since we're actually getting it on time

2.5 in January 20th (as "mid-to-end" January) with 2.55 in the "end of" March. Beyond that, the only other thing we know for the expansion is that it will be Spring so still looking at around May+ for a release date.

Ditto, though I want to be done with Coil entirely by the time the expansion comes out.

Hmm.. I don't know about this.
My first run to 50 with story + class quests + new dungeons was really excellent.
One of the best theme park leveling I had in an MMO.

I can't comment on leveling a second class class to 50 yet, since I'm still on my PAL.

I wonder if they will add soldiery gear to the hunt store in 2.5. Your friend missed the easily attainable myth gear (i90) via getting points from hunts.

Soldiery gear is already available at the hunt store but more expensive than the myth gear was. Maybe they'll lower the prices for 2.5

They're actually there already, just that the prices are so insane(10-15x what myth gear was) that you may as well just do dungeons for the gear or ST.

Finally got my Shiva book drop. I think I ditch the freaking animus grind and go for ironworks directly. Simply cba with that stupid quest line. Also, hunts can go diaf

Can't wait to start astrologer though. Will be a fun addition to my main scholar.

UGH. So my old phone went belly up, and I had my token attached to that. I didn't have a chance to get my Emergency Removal Password so now I can't remove that token to add a new one, which means I cannot log into my account. I sent an email to customer support.. crossing my fingers.

That almost happened to me earlier this week. Thankfully I was able to get the phone to work just long enough to get into the game remove the software token etc.

Need to put a token back on, now that I have a new phone. :p

Yesterday I finished my 2nd Novus (Stardust Rod). I went full spell speed and Det, so the price was quite reasonable (5 million, give or take). But in a place far away, Yoshida is laughing at me: for my SCH re-spec, I spent 29 lvl4 Crit and Det materias and failed 8 infusions just for the last Det point...and with the Stardust Rod, I only failed 3 Spell Speed IV, which on my server are 70k each...The RNG god is such a jerk sometimes...I was laughing histerically when the last Det infusion went 1/1 this time.

Thanks to that I could spend most of my savings in vanity. Bought the Fat Cat and Baby Opo Opo minions, and the Kirimu Coat for my BRD; now I have to buy Kirimu Brais also and meld both..Speaking of which, I feel I'm the only one that likes to spend his hard earned money. I have friends sitting upon 100 or more million and they literally do nothing with it, they only hoard it. No housing, no minions, no glamours, no 4 stars...what's the point of playing like that? It's not like the money will accompany you to real life once you stop playing...sometimes I get mad, because one of them was complaining it would take him weeks to gear up after a re-roll in our raid group. Dude, you're now a BRD and you have some great Kirimu pieces looking at you! But no, he will never spend money on that.. I really don't get it. BRD is my 3rd job, the most money I've ever had on me at once were 10 million and yet here I am...

I'll save you some time since I dealt with this back in October. You are going to have to call them to fix this, they can't do it over email. Not sure if they'll be open tomorrow, but try then cuz there is no customer support on the weekend.

This actually reminded me I needed to get a copy of that into KeePass, so thanks for that at least. Hopefully they take care of you quickly.

I tried Lancer out a bit last night and like someone warned, it was pretty boring at low level. I'm definitely a little confused why Impulse Drive comes so early and kind of invalidates your simple combo since you don't have anything to combo off Vorpal Thrust. Either way, I could tell pretty quick that the Warrior actually satisfies more of that melee feeling I got with the Berserker, and I still get to tank, so I think I'm just going to carry on with that. Might stop first and level Pugilist a bit so I can get Internal Release unlocked. I'm not sure what to use for my 5th cross-class skill though after Flash, Convalescence, Provoke and Internal Release. I was thinking maybe Second Wind since that scales with attack power and my self-healing buffs?

Eh, I see it as just something to do at this point.
Problem is the late steps just aren't fun. If it were better designed I'd agree, but now I just play other games. Unless you are like a crazy completionist I just don't see the point anymore.

In the expansion they seriously need to reexamine how the relic line operates. The original relic line was very well done, and is still kind of fun even when you are doing it ninth time around. Each new tier just introduced a longer and longer grind, and I am not a fan how the Animus/Nexus steps sort of invalidate the armory system and punish you for playing other classes. That's like one of the main draws of the game.

After a couple of days of resuming gathering / crafting, I've come to ask what the point is. I think I was always viewing DoH classes as supplements to DoW/M but i don't think that is the case. They seem like their own thing. Aside from a couple of barely-better BiS items for some classes, anytime I ask myself "what can I craft for any of my battle jobs" the answer is seemingly nothing aside from expensive clothing pieces to glamour.

I can't even see the point in Gil for the DoW/M classes aside from maybe buying materia if you want to do relic quests. I guess this may be why they are adding crafting items to the high level dungeons in 2.5. I wonder how that crafted gear will compare to the gear drops.

The i110 crafted stuff was nice because it, with Materia, is better than the i110 options and many are comparable if not better than their i120 stuff. It's a nice thing for those trying to push content super early and to get an extra leg up. They do lose value as time goes by, though.

Yeah, I guess I meant at the moment. Me coming into the game late and tomes being easier to acquire is probably skewing everything. Curious to see what kinds of items the new higher level crafted dungeon drop stuff will be.

Also maybe a dumb question but why do Vortex Feathers sell for like six figures? Is it the furniture? I can't imagine that many people want ilvl90 or 95 or whatever it is weapons. Unless it's just to glamour but even that seems like too much money.

You'd be surprised how much people spend on some of those items for glamour! Those weapons can(and will) sell for millions of gil over time usually.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
okay so

I have been playing this game for a few hours on the free trial

I'm about level 11, and it seems like a well-executed but fairly standard MMO

Am I missing anything? What makes this game special?

What makes you guys keep coming back to this one as opposed to other MMOs on the market, some of which are free?

I'm not trying to criticize the game or anything. I legitimately want to know if there is some part of the game that questing through the first few levels on a trial account isn't showing me. I'd like to see if I can experience something interesting before my 14 days are up.

I guess what I'm saying is that Square isn't giving me a good reason to pay for this instead of, say, reinstalling LOTRO or something. Wanted to get some input from some actual players.

You're only level 11, dude. The game hasn't even started yet for you. Most of the worthy content isn't even available until your first class hits 50. Probably one of the biggest draws is that you can have every single combat class on a single character. You have a lot of freedom to play whatever role you like, and the game has some really fun fights. I'd say give it time.

thats the problem i think with mmos

im immune to the grind since i was a ragnarok player ( grind is our specialty) mmos during the early phase are your standard fetch quests and takes too long to open up. I hope an mmo can do the early parts of the game right

Still, it's not like the game doesn't have a good story. Sure, you can skip all the dialogue and not give a fuck like I did my first run through but everything is actually well written if you give it the time. It also helps to be in a community like GAF. The social experience kinda eases you in, I think.

It doesn't really bring anything new to the table, if that's what you're looking for. It's just a good MMO with a lot of Final Fantasy flavor.

You can change classes after completing your level 10 class quest, and you can unlock the first dungeon at level 15 if you continue the main storyline quests.
