One thing I do hate about this game so far is the NPC design. They all look and sound extremely bland, like they could be random NPCs in any game.

I get that the world is designed to be similar to the real world but there's still a bit of flare in the town areas and environments. The NPC characters are pretty uninspired.

I have only played the first 2 hours, I don't know what to think about the game so far.
One thing I don't have is the urge to play, something I had with most of the other FF's, but that is maybe because (so far) not much of the story is clear.

One thing I really like is the music!

Couple hours in and just about done with Chapter 1. Mostly positive impressions, digging the combat system which got better once I switched to layout B for controls. The side banter is a lot of fun, the road trip setup feels fresh and the gameplay loop is scratching that Xenoblade/FFXII itch for me. Great food renders in this game, always a plus.

Side quest and hunting structure feels dated and the storytelling is all over the place, as expected, though I'm into the world building and the characters. Not sure I'd feel the same without having Brotherhood to inform me of the relationships, it's almost bizarre how much essential information seems to have been relegated to supplemental material. The idea of a lore tutorial even made its way into the game, but it's pretty underwhelming.

Assuming the gaps get addressed at some point but I'm expecting a lot of "I like what they're doing here" mixed with "what were they thinking" in my time with FFXV. Thankfully it feels like a lot of love ended up in this project after so much time in the oven, even if it didn't come out baked just right.

So you can't save in dungeons? I went through the mines, but after exploring for a while I got a game over thanks to that lvl 52 samurai asshole and had to load my recent save right before I started the mines lol.

That's totally old school. I was expecting to be able to save like many other modern games nowadays, but you actually need to be careful and back off when you think you should.

Speaking of the mines, I liked how there were multiple paths you could go.

It's beautiful, isn't it? Also no detective mode crap.

I have this feeling that they weren't exactly opposed to it, though, they just didn't even consider adding it, but would if they got enough feedback about it.

Thankfully, they didn't.

My impressions after about 5 hours last night:

- I really enjoy the battle system. It's some weird action hybrid system, but it's really fun once you "get" it and unlock some nodes on the battle screen. It's infinitely more fun when you unlock the air dashes. I still think magic was implemented in a piss-poor manner, and healing by retreating is a stupid mechanic, but the actual fighting part is pretty damn fun. Especially once you get into rhythm with weapon switching, parrying, etc.

- The wordplay between characters is pretty bad. It's hard going from something like Uncharted 4, where it felt so organic, to whatever FFXV is. There are a few good one liners from Prompto, but other than that it's very awkward. They certainly don't feel like a group of friends, that's for sure.

- Graphics on Pro version are pretty great. There's lots of noticeable texture popping in the car though, and the animation is pretty rough (I'm assuming that is the frame pacing issue). 4K seems very noticeable though.

- Music is amazing. We all knew that would be the case though, as FF has pretty much never missed with music. I also have fun being driven around by Ignis listening to old FF songs. Still bummed there's no FFVI or FFIV songs.

- Story is....I don't know. I've been doing a lot of battling, hunts, and exploration, haven't really advanced the story much at all. Guess we'll see.

Overall I'm supremely impressed, as it should be with a 10 year dev cycle game. The Ultimate Collector's Edition definitely delivered on content, that art book is something else. I honestly can't wait to get home and play, which is something I haven't felt about a video game in years.

Man, better take this kind of discussion to spoilers thread.

I got that scene quite later in the game so I think it can work. No idea if there is any specific time requirement. I just slept there at the motel.

Guess so, didn't think to do that. So many XV threads out and about idk where people are expected to discuss stuff.

Off to the spoiler thread.

Got close to 3 hrs in last night, got to level 5 almost level 6. I like the whole camping mechanic to level and buff up.

I found type C control to be the best for me. I like R2/L2 as the main attack/evade buttons and R1 as my map button and L1 as my lock on button. L3 to sprint and not sure yet what R3 does for me since I haven't used it.

Game looks great on the pro on high mode 1080p TV and I guess I'm not sensitive to frame pacing as I haven't noticed it or it hasn't distracted from my gameplay yet.

I need to explore a bit more and do more hunts before I want to move on story wise. Is there a good Level I should want to hit by chapter 2? I've been gauging where I should be based on the lowest level hunts for each hub. And I just got to resort and all the hunts are like 12+ so I'm guessing I should be leveling up a bit more still.

Tragic victim of fan death
Played two hours of this last night and this game is still half-baked. Like... design flaws already popping into my head while playing. Unreal that some of these things got passed into production phase.

I don't have access to the VI songs yet but I do have IV ones on my radio. Did you buy them at the store?

The food is constantly making me hungry, just like Yakuza games

Only thing this game has design wise that bugs is me is the whole dungeon system. It insults you for exploring by having a stupid level boss or enemy in it even if you outclass the regular grunts. I mean wtf you have a dungeon full of lvl7 enemies then throw a lvl52 enemy that kills you and makes you redo whole thing again. It punishes you for exploring the world they created

Where did that prologue novel come from?

Too bad none of it was in the game :(

Thanks for this. I just slept there and got nothing, but I figured I'd try. I'm in ch1 still, and haven't even seen the scene
where they find out Insomnia has fallen via the paper.

Old school dungeons would have a save point though, no?

I definitely bought an FFIV soundtrack from one of the vendors in Chapter One - be on the lookout for that kind of stuff under the auto parts section in shops.

So question for those that have beaten chapter 13.
The ravus battle, was your party just being one shotted by the white move? Like here prompto just sits around doin fuck all, https://youtu.be/vZDHK4nozG4
Use the regroup move by Ignis since there is a charge attack done here. It works better this way, IMO.

Some dungeons do have a point where we can camp and sleep. Since sleeping makes the game auto save, I assume the same applies to Dungeons. Didn't test it though.

Are there any unanimous 'top tier' techs the party should be equipping?

*awaits numerous 'depends on your playstyle' comments*

Oh wow, I had no idea you could buy more music in-game. That's awesome. I hope I didn't progress too far to go back and get it. Do you remember which store you bought them at?
