Played like an hour of it finally at night. Lol totally have no idea how to build out a character, they just sort of drop the ascension thing on you. I was like well I fight a lot so I guess I'll build combat?

That opening dialogue exchange between Noctis and his father before the boys set out of the kingdom...as cringe-worthy as the laughing scene in FFX. Not a good sign when the earliest introduction to a character makes me want yo punch him in the face repeatedly.

King: Wait Noctis, I have critical wisdom to impart before you travel!
Fuckface: sigh...what is it this time?
King: I'm serious, you may not ever be returning home!
Fuckface: Pfft...like that matters to me! Good luck with that treaty or whatever..not my problem
King: Stand tall my son....

Did no one else come away finding Noctis insufferable there?
Haha yep, he's a twat in that scene. Also, he almost looks like a different art style face wise.

Is there anyway to resize the HUD/screen? Many HUD objects are on the very edge of my screen and the little pop up notifications like "Gladiolus picked up such and such" are getting cut off/continuing off screen.

Have you checked to make sure overscan isn't enabled on your TV?

When the end of a chapter makes you cash in 20kxp with no modifier 🙃

Edit: on the plus side the auto save has two saves and kept one pre chapter so that's super nice.

... Was this like, straight up cut from the game? It reads like a script.

I'm wondering the same thing myself. It's put together nicely, also kind of interesting to see
Prompto was accepted into the group formally the day before lol

Question, I'm on chapter 2 and see a ton of potential side quests and hunts but want to proceed with the main story, do side quests ever become locked out? Or can I come back anytime post game? Just wanna avoid situations like the witcher 3 where a lot of quests get locked out at a turning point.

One of the things I like the most about this game is it utilizes open world in a way that most open world games don't - in that you run into difficult stuff way above your pay grade immediately.

I was exploring around Hammerhead and accidentally fell into a valley with a giant level 30+ beast. I was level 5. All my bros proceeded to get squished in one hit and I had to skirt around the edge of the valley avoiding the giant monster until I found an exit and noped the hell out of there.

It's going to add so much to be able to come back later and beat the shit out of that thing. It adds a feeing of progression that is missing from most open world games where it's "this area has things your level, but the harder things are gated off until you're a higher level." It makes it feel more like a world instead of a game.

The intro cutscene between Regis and Noct really should've been a flashback. The entirety of the intro before the car pushing scene is crap. Badly storyboarded.

Yeah, I'm actually rather enjoying it. I just wish I didn't have to read it.

I can perfectly imagine the scenes playing out though, so I suppose it works

If you cant see similarities you must be blind, or you havent played one of the two games, its as simple as that.

Oh, I played it.....still have the strat guide for it....game I sold after about 5 hours.

Terrible characters, 900mph sprint speed, fetch quests in the beginning that were utterly worthless and gave little reward. Terrible combat

At least in this I level like mad crazy and it feels worth doing.

Noctis is ultimately a good guy but also a spoiled, sarcastic brat. No wonder...
I didn't find the good bye scene cringy but a very accurate representation of how people actually act.
Also, Noctis being kind of a jerk to his father in the very last moments they share together makes the unraveling events even more hard hitting and regrettable.
This leaves room for Noctis to better himself and grow...and he does.

No, that cutscene is necessary. I mean, it could have been a flashback if the story started in another way (I would have liked a prologue with Noctis packing things up in the castle before going to the adventure so the tutorial section makes narrative sense and the game also explains the player who are the protagonists and who is Regis).

I would have liked a child Noctis and Regis emotional flashback like the Dawn trailer after Chapter 1 ends, though.

Lol, in the Spanish localization, the Star Pendant accesory is called "Colgante de Stella (Stella's pendant)", and the description adds that it is believed it belonged to a long time forgotten heroine. Love the localization hahaha.
My main problem with this game is the italian localization. I think I'm going to play my second playthrough in English, cause it's so bad. Even that reference was completely removed :(
Anyway I called my Carbuncle Stella when I played the Platinum Demo, but now I'm playing at standard, so Carbuncle won't help me.
It seems I really won't play with Stella in this game :p (or maybe, the Chocobo...)

Chapter 2, amazing game so far, I really like the combat system, the exploration and the conversations that the main characters constantly have. The game is great at recreating the sense of friendship between them.
The story so far is told in a non invasive way (lots of details for example are given through the conversations mentioned above), the game seems to focus more on exploration like FFXII, but the plot is definetly there and it is interesting, watching Kingslaive is strongly recommended.

Nah I liked having the intro - especially because it gives context for the end of chapter one. If that scene is a flashback there's less impact because you know that's
the last interaction Noctis had with Regis before he dies.

I'm also a person who hasn't watched any of the supplementary material to FFXV so I'm only learning things from what's presented in-game. I'm aware what I spoiler end is chapter one stuff and most people probably knew about it years ago but whatever.

So, early on, I found what is basically a Dead Space weapon that fires harpoons...

Is there any reason -not- to use it? The two early ranged weapons were kinda trash

There should've been more Insomnia and Regis in general.
It's kind of hard to care about your hometown falling when you see it for like 2 seconds. Even Noctis doesn't seem to care right after the cutscene. I met Iris who escaped the destroyed city and she's hopping about like nothing ever happened. What kind of lives did these characters live in the city? What kind of relationship did Noctis have with his father? From what I understand this is in supplemental material but it should've been in the game itself.

Real talk, one of my favorite things about this game is sleeping at an outpost or something like that, and the party is just walking around, minding their business. At first I thought it was just to show them as living characters, who have their own interests and the usual crap you heard a million times, but you walk to them as Noctis and he says good morning.

This is just so fucking adorable, and actually fits the game's universe quite well. If they were just minding their business, you could just assume they skip the waking up period, but actually going and saying good morning to everyone shows that he's always the last one to wake up.

He's great, Noctis is so cute.

Maybe you turned it off?

Oh yeah, it's there when I open the map. I thought it was an on-screen marker.

Chapter 12...

Without spoiling (I'm only chapter 3) is that your reaction to the stuff that happens in Chapter 12 or the quality of the storytelling in chapter 12?

There should've been more Insomnia and Regis in general.

Yeah, I did that
Iris stuff
last night and I had the exact same thought. It's like they're living in a parallel timeline. The worst is Prompto. World's gone to shit and my buddy's in mourning? GOOFY SELFIE TIME!

It's so disjointed.

Unfortunately this is a recurring theme throughout the narrative.

I feel them adding those Kingsglaive cutscenes does not add much overall to the story or the understanding there of (maybe cause I already watched the movie thus the impact is lessened because of it?)

Only just started playing. Spent half an hour faffing around in the tutorials to get a feel for how much combat has changed or not.

All of the control schemes have a fault in one way or another for me.

Type A would be perfect if Attack and dodge buttons were swapped (circle and square).

Yes I know I can change these with accessibility (I already have, but now I have to fight muscle memory when I see the button prompts...).

Custom button mapping would be greatly appreciated (or please just swap Circle and Square for type A pls Tabatha)

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I'm not even really sure what that scene is trying to convey, honestly. Since the relationship between Noctis and his dad is completely undefined, I'm not sure whether the kid just hates dad, hates the trip he's going on or is just a dick in general.

Noctis is ultimately a good guy but also a spoiled, sarcastic brat. No wonder...

This leaves room for Noctis to better himself and grow...and he does.

My confusion also stems from having seen Kingsglaive. For those that haven't at least watched the first 30 minutes of the movie...

Facts:
-The embroiled war between the two kingdoms has left the good guys on the retreat and heavily on the defensive. The general mood is fearful as the Axis power has conquered, pillaged, and caused insurmountable death tolls. All that stands left is the kingdom city as the surrounding lands have lost their protection and feel abandoned as the King is unable to protect them from the ensuing zerg rush. Hope is nil.
-To protect what is left of the kingdom city, the king must maintain "the wall" a magical defensive shield that takes a heavy toll on his health and well-being.
-Knowing victory is certain the Axis power asks for a truce and a surprising peace treaty, but true intentions are not well known nor is anyone trusting of this, the king is fully aware the end is nigh.
-The tenuous cease-fire has caused all of the citizenry to split as many now think the King is leading them to their death if the treaty goes forward, while others are naive and assume co-existence is secure with the treaty.

Noctis, the prince and heir to this realm, isn't cognizant to any of this apparently given that terrible exchange. Is he that much of an idiot? Are the writers just completely off the mark?

The opening scene is meant to show Noctis at his worst. He is supposed to grow throughout his journey as a character, and he does it. By the end, he will be a completely different person, I can assure you that.

Yea, I expect that, but still it's an awful introduction to the character.

This is frustrating to me as well... I didn't know that R3 does anything, what does that do?

the "Hold R1" thing isn't working... you need to constantly find a new target and hold again... or you may lose target for some reason, wonder what is happening, then need to release R1 and hold it again to get your target back.

I wish you could just tap it to lock on... and it remains locked until the enemy is dead.

R3 is an actual lock on, pressing R1 then R3 will actually LOCK to that target. It's shit like this is why no 3rd person action game actually has good controls. I cant attack, and hold the lock on button, and move the camera, and use tactics at the same time, I dont have that many fingers. I always use the 'claw' position for these games just so I can see whats happening around me.

I think that's a little unfair. Noct doesn't have any idea he's not coming home, and he's not particularly rude to his dad. He's just being an informal teen. I thought he was being honest when he said 'good luck with the treaty'. He came off as stand-offish but alright to me.

I should have kept going but I had been playing it for like half an hour with no signs of any progress besides enemy levels incrementing slowly, so I quit. I got a carbon bangle or whatever, +150 HP I think.

These shops are selling me soundtracks, decals, and car paint jobs, how do I access these? I haven't found any menus for these.

Question regarding the story. A simple yes or no will suffice, no details:
does Nyx get a mention in the game or is it like he never existed?

Why the fuck would you make lock on take more than one button

Is the English dialogue at least good or fine? I much prefer that to Japanese with subtitles but won't use it if its awful...

Some people say the English VA is bad but I think it's actually very good. Didn't cringe at all other than a few sparse moments here and there.

Boy do I love it in games when my main character is an insufferable shitstain for a dozen or so hours...
