A little tip for physical owners (don't know how digital works):
There's an install within the game during the main menu which takes roughly 25 minutes. Don't wait for the patch to download and install before you launch the game because otherwise you'll be waiting another 25 minutes before you play the game.
Launch the game after the initial install; that way you can dowload the patch and install the game at the same time.
Taking into consideration the impressions so far, the demos, and previews I fully expect to thorougly enjoy this game even with the apparently at times wacky story and half baked gameplay mechanics.
The last mainline FF I beat was x. I played a crapload of XI but when my ps2 was stolen I stopped playing. XII was good but I never managed to finish it (waiting for remaster).
I had preordered XIII 2 years before release but after playing it for 8 hours and realizing I wasnt having any fun I traded it in.
Played two weeks or so of XIV but im not really into mmos anymore.
Basically im hyped to play and actually beat this even with all of its flaws.
The moment of brilliance for me was in the car at night listening to Castle Cornelia from atop a cliff seeing
a brightly lit peak with smoke/magic coming out of it
in the distance. No game has evoked such feels this gen yet. There is something so special and magical about this world they have created.
It truly feels like an FF map of old.
Wanderlust is amazing but I also got a world map esque theme of what is I think a re-arrangement of the Altissa theme. Sounded superb and probably would've been the games world map theme had it been a 16/32 bit title.
These dudes are truly likeable. I was very cautious of the characters prior to the game. I love diversity and this game was the opposite of it. But they have charm and a natural chemistry that is missing in most videogame leads. I guess it helps that the writers had just the 4 of them to focus on as your main cast and no one else!
I went in knowing a lot of peoples story impressions (minus any spoilers) so I had an idea about what I was getting into in regards to that. I listened to the radio a bit and the people and feel like they are giving me enough interesting tid bits. But I wish that had all come in cut scene form.
Compared to XIII's opening 3.5 hours? XV is worse. I loved XIII...its presentation was better in the first 3.5 hours, the characters were more interesting, so was the plot and the music was leagues better. My suspicion that I wouldn't like XV as much as XIII is already coming true. There was a drive and direction present in XIII plus a newness to the environments that XV is truly lacking. But perhaps that is due to its relatively humble beginning and as it is based on reality.
But what XV has that is special is its world, the car, the chemistry of the main leads. That is carrying the game at the moment. Combat is very fun too and using the special techniques of the other characters. It is its own game...not totally what I look for in FF...but it is undoubtedly feeling like a mainline FF in many other ways nonetheless.
I only expect the game to get better from here on out. Also a word of advice to all...PLEASE CAMP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. The best cutscenes have been special quests with bro's that happen after camping. You get to do one with them alone. Great character development and nice introspective moments there!
Is there any way to play custom songs in the car radio? I have a strange desire to cruise down the road with my Final Fantasy bros playing Vanessa Carleton's Thousand Miles song.
Fuck it. You know what, fuck it! I don't care if the reviews are perfect. I'm a lifelong Final Fantasy fan. I was burned last gen by the terrible FFXIII, and I have really missed the series ever since. It's clear to me that the game is ambitious, has heart, and really tries to honor the legacy of the series and honor fans.
So fuck it, I'm in. Going out to buy a PS4 right now.

Wish I could play this, have to wait a month. My order is 3.5 years old and is shipping to my home elsewhere while I'm in school right now. I tried changing the shipping address but apparently I was too late. Ah well.
Game sounds fun I'm glad it's getting great reviews.

Should I watch Brotherhood and Kingsglaive before playing the game? I would rather not, but I don't know if I would be missing important story stuff if I don't

I'm getting this today, but seeing most of the positive impresssions state things such as "this gorgeous view while classic ff music was playing has been the best thing about the game so far" type comments are extremely worrying :/
If I'm not a huge open world fan, but a massive old ff fan, I hope there's gameplay that invokes strong positive feelings and not just "it's pretty and nostalgic"

The combat in FF13 was incredible and so far sounds better than anything *GAMEPLAY* related that ff15 has to offer :/ I REALLY hope I'm wrong I haven't loved an ff game since ff9.
I didn't pay much attention to the dialogue while watching videos and stuff, but discrepancy with what is being said by japanese VA and actual script is distracting. Like, it's not that they change any significant meanings but tone and attitude of many lines differ quite noticeably >_>
I'm actually thinking of playing this with English VA. Based off the Kingsglaive movie, voice acting was pretty good there, so I imagine it to be the same here.

First time ever receiving a game before actual release date. It's waiting at the house now. I still can't play till after work tomorrow since I apparently ordered 2. I'm returning the first since it cost more. I'll just stare at it all night.
I would recommend getting the skill for AP while driving and in Chapter 3 getting the skill for AP while riding a chocobo. You have to do both of those things anyway and you can amass a decent amount of AP while doing them. Ignis regroup skill is extremely valuable I would get that ASAP because it heals your party 100%.
Personally didn't like anything in FF13 apart from the combat. But the battle system was THAT GOOD that I finished it based on how much fun the battles were. Which is crazy because pre release "what? You only control one character!?! " then first few fights basically are auto play. It was amazing how incredible the system became after a few hours.
