Anybody know a good place to get combat tips on this game?

I'm absolutely loving the game but I'm still having some issues grasping the combat mechanics. For example, every so often when I use the two handed sword Noctis will use Tempest. How? Should I just hold the attack button or is there a benefit to actually pressing it for each attack?

Would really appreciate it!
You can train at a camping point.

It works pretty well. The mechanics are easy to understand but they are more on the shallow side in terms of depth so don't expect much of a challenge (of course I'm still early in the game so who knows, maybe you start catching Leviathans or something). All in all I'd say it's a rather nice way to pass the time.

Spent all day yesterday doing sidequests. A lot of them are good, but there's an overabundance of replicated trash quests. All the auto repair and rescue quests are weird. They're the exact same quest over and over. Just give them a potion/antidote, or repair kit. Most of the time it's the exact same NPC model even. It'd make sense if these were randomly generated events for extra AP (like saving citizens in inFAMOUS), but they're all uniquely named quests.

About 9 hours in now and still in chapter 2. Just entering the first real dungeon.

I had the same thoughts about those recycled quests. Hopefully that type of sidequest won't become overabundant later on because it is a really unrewarding way to spend time in the game.

Finished chapter I yesterday.

We played on the arcade machine in the hotel for like 30 minutes, went fishing, battle a shit ton of monsters and did many sidequest.

Man, this is a good FF, this is awesome. Faith in SE restored.

I'm right there with you, just plain fun man!

On my third day of play, having come in totally blind:

* Combat sure is tough, and confusing. I'm glad I tried the tutorial first, and even then it's a little fast for my taste. Any disadvantages to choosing "Wait" mode?

* Feet and miles for measurement? Is there a way to play this game in English but without English measurement? Tell me it's in the options somewhere.

* Loving all these random places you can just walk around and find, like an entrance to a dungeon with level 40 monsters in it just hiding amongst some pipes and old concrete. Found a closer-to-my-level cave with a super-powerful samurai-like thing who knocked me right off a bridge and I had to scramble to safety. The game hasn't pointed me at these places; they're just there to find.

* Is Justice Monsters Pinball meant to be this easy? I'm probably missing something and it's supposed to be more challenging and faster paced... I only played once, survived for *one whole hour*, and got a reward that is far better than any accessory I'm now carrying.

* Dino! Ayyyyy! I've only ever heard one RPG character talk in the New York accent (particularly the Italian-descended one) I grew up hearing every day as a kid, and listen to this guy here! I like him already! (That "one": the monster in Resonance of Fate who says "you'll have more holes than a beehive!")

* Loving how out-of-the-box multilingual this disc is. I'm just randomly switching text and voice into languages I can understand (or attempt to understand). The Russian font is kerned pretty badly, but I'm just happy it's there.

* Took on a level 11 hunt despite being only around level 7, and managed it, though it took 4 hours of in-game time. The characters even complained about how long it took!

Still in the first chapter, three or four hours in, and there's so much to do and explore! It's like they took the criticism of FFXIII to heart here... hope it keeps up!

Behind Hammerhead in it's own little valley.

found it when I was lvl 8 and nearly got a heart attack lol..what a beast. Can't wait to kill it.

imho no. it even got it's own board to get new abilities for the wait mode. try it! you can always switch back.

Can't seem to get dodging down, when you're fighting mobs you can't exactly read enemy animations to be able to react enough. Also I'm just sporadically switching weapons during combos without knowing what's effective or not.

Watching Kingsglaive intermittently as I play, and it's a real shame they didn't work the game to incorporate the movie as cutscenes.

I appreciate what they were trying to accomplish with the multi-media delivery, but too many players will either refuse to watch the "supplementary" media or not know of its existence thereby missing out on the exposition.

Knowing what happens at the very start of the movie makes the way the game reveals disjointed parts of the narrative feel so much more complete.

I really hope they make some kind of all inclusive version (goty or whatever) later that includes but also guides you through the process of consuming all the media. I think many people would find the game a completely different experience if they did.

Just started Chapter 9...
Wow Altisia looks amazing! Fantasy Venice. Seems like the game will be more story heavy onwards. I love how it looks but I also miss the open fields though.

Yeah once you get the hang of combat, you can at least try some tough fights ans survive if it goes south. Just don't ask me to fight an Iron Giant any time soon...

I'll ask again:

Anyone find more than the Orienteering posters F and G? They both gave me recipes.

Also I found a scrap of paper leading to a piece of a map...are the rest around the first area?

Think of it as two states:

Hold attack to enter offensive state.
Hold block to enter defensive state.

When square appears enter defensive state and stay their until the attack happens and you can counter, or the prompt disappears (indicating the enemy has been interrupted/dealt with).

While in defense state let Noctis auto dodge while you use the time to survey the battle and choose your next move.

I know about the dark theme of Versus XIII, I just wondered why they would use both names for the capital.

So if Lucis is the region, Insomnia the capital, what is the country?

Also, highlight of yesterday.

*Hop in the car at night*
IGNIS: You shouldn't drive at night, it's dangerous. Let's go rest instead.
ME: ''Hmmm, but I really want to go to that side mission, it's just half a mile away....''
FRIEND: ''Don't give a fuck, disagree and go.''
*Go anyway*

...

Two minutes on the road.
ME: ''Well, there's jack shit.''
FRIEND: ''Told ya.''
PROMPTO: That looks demonic alright...
ME: ''What the fuck is he talking about?!''
*Car brutally stops*
*IRON GIANT LVL 30 STRAIGHT RUNNING HIS SHIT TOWARDS ME*
ME AND FRIEND: ''HOLY SHIT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!''

I'm enjoying this game way more than I am The Witcher 3.

TW3 has better writing, story, and the world feels more lived in.

FFXV has better combat, traversal, and the open world feels more like a game arena than a breathing place.

They're very different types of games, TW3 feeling more like a simulation and FFXV more arcade like. I can totally understand why people would prefer one over the other.

Myself, I enjoy exploring and moving around the FFXV open world infinitely more fun than TW3's despite the latter having a superior open world in many ways.

When we get a game with all the great elements of TW3's storytelling and the fun of FFXV's gameplay systems we're going to have something very special.

I sold my treasures. Do I need them for weapon upgrades or are they safe to sell?

You'll need some for upgrades and spell crafting, but you can sell the bulk of them.

It feels like managing your raw Gil profit and how efficient you are with using the materials for enhancements is very much intended.

You will need some of them for upgrades and other things. Best thing is to not sell all of them. Early on, I only sold 10 of the total 19 of something I had.

Do the hunts and high paying sidemissions for the gil.

Did the guy who said there's a Prompto scene while staying at an inn say which inn yet?

I sold stuff like behemoth horns lol.

Asking again...I am guessing I need to really lock on to a certain part but how will I know which...?

On my way to a dog tag sidequest,I had a bunch of Girafe looking creatures appear and the game told me to destroy the appendage and a meter with a countdown timer appeared...what the hell was I supose to do there...? I killed the group, still got the exp and all but that timer ran out before I could break appendage I guess...?
You move the right stick in different directions while locked on.

I'm level 9 and clearing lv14 and 15 hunts, feeling like a badass lol

Meanwhile I'm Lvl. 14 & getting fucking rekt by Lvl. 16 Magitek Soldier mobs, like GAWDDAMN. I'm trying to do this quest to get an Amethyst Stone for Dino & they keep spawning along with a Dualhorn anytime I go near the place - my guys can't handle it.

Does anyone have that decoy skill? How is it?

Also I only just now realized it was link strikes giving me all that additional AP. Things... are going much faster now lmao

In my opinion, The Witcher 3 rides off The Bloody Baron story for the majority of the game. It's the best story mission in the game. But it's also the first story mission in the game. Everything else after just feels like your standard fantasy stuff. And with that combat, it makes it somewhat of a chore to go through a lot of the missions.

With FFXV the combat greatly helps in getting through missions so far since it's so good. So even if the story points aren't as impressive as The Witcher 3, I feel like as an overall package, it might still be more enjoyable.

This game is so good! It feels like a mix between traditional Final Fantasy and WRPG open maps and sidequests. Can't get enough of it.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of running toward waypoints in an FF game, but I suppose it's somewhat unavoidable in an open world game and necessary.

Its good. But sometimes it doesnt work as intended. It does work.. but not all the time. Sometimes I notice the enemies are stuck at the decoy and other times enemies like the leopard look-alikes, they are so busy focusing on me they ignore the decoys.

Get it if you have AP to spare.

Really, if FFXV is in the same discussion as Witcher 3, then Square hit it out of the park.

While I think Witcher 3 is far "realized" in terms of world building, FFXV has a certain charm to it.

Is there a limit to the amount of xp you can hold until you cash in at a camp or hotel? i'm currently sitting on 30k exp and will bank at hotel with the x2.0 modifier but tempted to see how far I can go...
