Final Fantasy XV |OT| There and back again.

My comments of the first chapter to contrast some of the complaints and provide perspective:

I've noticed so many mention how jarring the added Kingsglaive scenes were and how confused people are with the story because of a lack of narrative communication to the player.

At the same time, I've seen people yearn for the "fill in the blanks with your imagination" age of games before the advent of the cinematic game experience. My friends, what I just played was a sweet spot between the two. That Kingsglaive cutscene reminded me of PSX era RPGs that had some out of leftfield cinematic with no dialog or formulaic structure and was used simply to set the tone for the current situation or what comes next. Many messed up scenes in Xenogears come to mind.

People have also stated they were put off by Noctis' seemingly carefree attitude after the news. I felt this was perfectly handled by his comment when he returns to Hammerhead about moving on. His general dreary attitude never seems to make these selfies and pinball sessions as anything more than a distraction (rather than simply being sociopathic as some make it seem).

I only felt the need to chime in because I went from being hyped to cancelling my digital pre-order after reading the leaked copy impressions (only to rebuy it to unlock it again after playing it for an hour because the cancellation was delayed) to now being totally on board after playing for 7 hours in the first chapter and witnessing the chapter 2 transition.

I've a quick question. I'm at the beginning of chapter 3.

I'm supposed to follow Ardyn and he's telling me that this is the point of no return. So my question is, will I be able to still roam around after this event or am I gonna be stuck in a linear path after I agree to go with him?

wow, I'm glad I didn't get the Amazon version even more now. That's just a cheat as a pre-order bonus. I wouldn't be able to resist using it and cheapening my own experience.

It comes in your inventory automatically once you enter the code. So you can't choose to use it or not. It's just there. It's not a big deal for early in the game aside from the 2x XP place but that's still 5k a stay which is rough going. Most hotels are cheap and gas is like 10 gil with out it so yeah... lol

I think I might have extra codes but I don't know if they work or not.

I find it hilarious that the hammerhead store guy is caught off guard every time you talk to him.

Might be me but Takka looks like they modeled him after Forest Whitaker. Then there's guy that asks you to take pictures in Lestallum. He looks like Hurley from Lost to me...

Chapter 4 is self-contained so no exploring or side quests. In chapter 5 you don't have the car (but can still use Chocobos).

I've only spent an hour or two with the game, but does the combat ever become more than pick a weapon that beats resistance then hold attack/dodge?

I have black patches flickering in and out, distant objects flickering, and random colorful graphical artifacts all over my screen. I just can't play it like this.

So far I believe Chapter XIII is the only stain in an otherwise amazing game. Did they do this as tribute to Final Fantasy XIII fans? It cannot be a coincidence.

Oh, and also the fact that Square Enix not only did not learn from the Jihl Nabaat Syndrome, but they actually DOUBLED DOWN on it on this game. Regarding the plot, I think this is my only disappointment so far. So many cool looking characters with design, voices and positions on their own, completely and absolutely wasted.

But heh, so far the positives outweigh the negatives so much, it's not even a competition. Having an absolute blast (Except, again, for that incredibly boring and long Chapter XIII).

So I got the game up from Redbox today, quick question if anyone doesn't mind answering. Is this game fine going into it blind without watching anything just taking it as is?

If you're going in blind, check out the Lore guide before you start the game. It's an option when they ask you if you want to do the tutorials.

Ok, thank you.

I have to say, I was skeptical. But maaaan...I'm really liking FFXV!

Kingsglaive is a must-see though. It gives FFXV its context, and it was actually a pretty good movie for what it's supposed to be.

constantly hearing about how bad chapter 13 is...weirdly makes me hype for it lol.

Look, I'm one of the biggest cheerleaders for this game in all of GAF.

Chapter 13 sucks. I honestly have no idea what they were thinking with it. It's... Stupid. And boring.

I would've been okay with it if it lasted one hour and a half less than it does. Honestly, it seems like intentional trolling or they ran out of ideas for this particular segment.

I'm sure you won't enjoy it, and you will wish with all your soul it's over already.

Same here lol.

No, no no!

Without XV spoilers, what is this about? Never finished XIII

Not sure I can go into detail without spoiling. But many characters are wasted. See that character with a cool design? Well, forget about them.

Watch Brotherhood FFXV on Youtube, there's 6 episodes ~15 min a piece. Then play chapter one, then watch Kingsglaive.

Yea, it's utterly stupid you need to do this to flush out what's going on more, but that's the way it is.

Also tried to do English again... got about 15 seconds in until ignis talked and immediately turned it back to Japanese. Why the hell do they do that with english VA. Did they just use Adam Croasdell because Japanese people think all manservants or butlers are British? They also made him talk more "regal" and it just doesn't sound right. It's not just his character either, instead of using natural talking patterns and re-writing the script for it to make sense, they just brute force akward VA it.

Honestly, he came off the same way in Japanese to me.

The REAL issue with Chapter XIII is that it takes waaay too long. If it was just half an hour of doing... Well, what you do in there, I would've been perfectly fine.

True. It did drag on for a long time. I did like the concept. Just it was executed in a bad way.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'm currently in Chapter 3 and using cover to regen health or point-warp while hanging during combat isn't working. I had absolutely no issues before. Is there a bug I'm not aware of?

Is there any reason not to just sell all your Treasures for Gil?

Some of them are required for weapon upgrades and you can infuse them into magic for various effects so yes, there's a pretty good reason not to do so unless you have dozens upon dozens of dupes.

I really, REALLY love how the danger of traveling after dark has been implemented; I'm always on edge while driving down the long, desolate highways, praying that I'm not going to be ambushed by a group of high-level monsters before I reach the next tiny pocket of civilization. Very Dragon's Dogma-esque.

It probably helps that (for some reason) I've always found the neon lights of gas stations and drive-ins to be a weirdly cosy/comforting visual when contrasted with the darkness of night.

Oh, I forgot you could even upgrade weapons. Yeah, I've had like 6 Cid upgrades just telling me to do more quests for about 5 Chapters straight now. I've done a ridiculous amount of sidequests/hunts/main quests and they never finished. I stopped caring.

When I go back and talk to Cid, he just tells me to stand up straight.

I'm not that far but I find it amusing that Chapter XIII of all things is the one considered the worst :p maybe that was intentional lmao

Agreed completely. The concept itself was good
(Feeling alone, powerless, being tainted about your friends' safety, etc) was cool. But the environments were extremely repetitive, the reuse of assets was too noticeable and kind of broke the suspension of disbelief. Running around tight hallways for 2 hours is not fun.

The main hubs of those areas were amazing-looking, though, very
Midgar-esque.
