I disagree, I think it's very obviously a hybrid system and was never, ever intended to be pixel precise action.

I don't think anything was muddled in development in this regard, but I /do/ think they needed to refine it more: camera and some kind of gambit system, especially.
this is in no way whatsoever a hybrid system. next you are going to tell me bloodborne is mixed with turn based because it has uninterruptible animations

I let it install for a while this morning (maybe an hour and a half or more), and had to stop it at 70%. I hate doing that when it's a disc, but I don't do it much.

The patch being 10.8gb slowed things down, and I still have half to download.

I redeemed the day one code, but may not use the weapon if it seems like a cheat. I almost just threw it out.

Masamune? It's just a fairly standard great sword. Looks cool!

Well you're wrong because it is a hybrid system. Sorry to tell you. :(

If you feel like giving a proper reply with decent reasoning instead of unintelligent snark, I'll do the same in reply. :)

Finally finished the game.

Chapters 1-8 were amazing. Absolutely loved the open world.

As for 9 onwards, yeah... That left a lot to desire.

Overall I'll give it like an 8.5. So disappointed the second half of the game let it down as much as it did.

Huh. I found chapters 10, 11, 12 to be the high point of the game so far. If the rest of the second half is as good as that (I'm just finishing chapter 12) then the second half will definitely be the stronger part of the game for me.

Chapters 10-12 were probably the best part of the game, but it's unfortunately followed by the complete shitshow that is chapter 13. Chapter 14 is good again, though.

Can someone explain the different weapon types and how to do weapon-switching well? I have absolutely no clue and it feels like I'm missing out on something really important. All I'm doing is light sword/heavy sword variance for fast light attacks or slow heavy attacks depending on how good the enemy is at stunning me or how vulnerable to stun they seem to be.
Was equal parts happy/scared af when I saw the
Midgar Zolom
right before entering the waterfall to find the next sacred weapon.

I just got there and that whole area seemed to be the game's way of saying "yeah go do some sidequests and buy the area's best equipment and don't come back until then."

This was fine-ish for a little while. There was a time when I could take these guys. I'd even wait for them to land so I could woop on them and get some exp. Then at some random point, they all got high-powered sniper rifles and I couldn't even get close without them sending everyone in my party into danger within seconds.

Right all of a sudden all the enemies in the game became double my level and take me out in 3-4 hits. It's not as bad with normal melee enemies but with the damn ranged enemies it's ridiculous. They have a firing squad and can drop my team in seconds and there isn't really anything I can do about it.

I also am having issues with the game not recognizing my inputs. I'll hold X and sometimes my blocks/dodges won't register as well as the follow up parries not working sometimes. It wouldn't be as game breaking as it has been if I didn't wholly rely on it to combat these enemies that are so much higher in level than me.

just finished
Chapter 13
, it was a nice fresh idea for the game and a change but it was way too long, took me like
2-3 hours

wish if the whole game was linear instead of the empty world we got that you mostly just walk instead of "playing"

Some people might try to say that weapon switching mid-combo is important, but it's not. There are very few instances where you might want to switch. One that comes to mind is that if you're using daggers, sometimes the enemy will either move or get knocked away mid-combo and you might want to switch to a sword or polearm so you can reach them. But yeah, it's not important. Just use the most effective weapon in a situation and you'll be fine.

I feel like combo regular hits vs. finishers isn't telegraphed well enough for that to work well, no?

Also anytime I've used a polearm for Noctis it's mostly ended badly for him.

JORMBO

Darkness no more
Just finished it in 25 hours. Did a few sidequests at the beginning, but they all seemed boring so I stopped doing them. Chapter 13 was complete shit, but other then that I enjoyed the game. I feel the story could have been a lot better. They had a good base story, but it wasn't really delivered right or told in enough detail. I think if they had a bit more development time (lol) it could have been a great game. I will give it an 8.5/10. Hopefully FF16 will come together a bit smoother.

Warping also uses up stamina aside from MP. So while you are hanging for instance, your MP is refilled, but your stamina drains fast. If it empties, you fall to the ground and can often lose more HP from the fall than what you had prior to replenishing.

You can actually eliminate fall damage by pressing guard the moment you touch the ground. He'll do a backflip or something like that while flashing blue, similar to the just guard skill.

Not sure if you need Blink enabled for that, it was one of the first skills I purchased.

Chapter 10-12

Beautiful absolutely beautiful I loved it

On chapter 13

Wtf is prompto you guys didn't prepare me for this..don't tell me where he is btw

I really enjoyed the
magazine guy's
subquests.

They give you a shit ton of money and exp for minimal effort. Plus you get to see some amazing views from the places he sends you to.

What the HELL JUST HAPPENED!?

I'm at end game. I went back to the open world to level up and explore. I was fighting one of those flaming Iron Giants near Duscae, and after some time during the battle, suddenly
Aranea appears on her airship, drops down, joins my party, helps me defeat the giant and then she parts ways with me.

It was fucking AWESOME! I didn't expect such a thing to happen in the middle of a fight!

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.

I would get the Ignis skill ASAP that scans enemies at the 'start' of battle.

I find the core of FFXV's combat to be all about weaknesses, he shows what weapons they're strong or weak to which actually makes a huge difference in numbers. I don't see any real reason to be swapping mid combo and stuff like that, just switching to whatever each enemy is weak to.

This gets kinda really annoying to me considering his AI sometimes doesn't cast it though.

Make use of each weapons inherent combos.

Holding down attack
Holding down attack + analog direction (forwards, backwards, left, right)
Holding attack - releasing attack - holding it again.

Each of these inputs triggers a different combo.

For instance, with the Airblade 'attack + analog back' does a double back flip that launches into a forward thrusting air combo.

Or with the spear 'attack + forward analog' does a diving thrust.

Also these things change based on proximity to target.

CHAPTER 13 SPOILERS:

Ravus was an HP sponge and extremely unfun. I must have used like fifty different types of potions and the battle went on for ages. Hoping the final boss isn't like this.

It's based on certain parameters. I've only gotten Ramuh thus far he appears when battles last a long time. Titan comes when your allies are in danger and I believe Leviathan comes when Noctis is in danger. It's in the guide but I don't have it in front of me right now.

I'm pretty sure I read that Leviathan also requires you to be near water. (Probably a lot of it.)

Just finished C5, and got the infamous "Jared" cutscene.

Wasn't confusing at all. This was the guy who'd been helping the group out for a while, their reaction felt perfectly natural.

I mean, the story could definitely use fleshing out, perhaps more could have been made of the risk Jared was putting himself in, but this particular beat was nowhere near as bad as people made it out to be.

The reason Noctis' personality seems so "lost" is because he has a tremendous weight on his shoulder that no one else has and he spent his entire life knowing about it but never really acknowledging it. I mean he was so casual with everyone about everything that even they didn't realise how important he is. For example in conversation with the bros they would often be amazed or surprised at the things Noctis' tells them and these are people he grew up with and is closest to. One instance is when Gentians appears and Prompto asks who she is and he just gives a laid back answer like it's nothing and Prompto is like "Woah dude !"

Spoilers for Chapter 10
Uh Gladio is being a bit of an asshole don't you think?, I mean he did lose his father and recently the love of his life wtf dude cut him some slack. Ignis being blind sucks but Noctis is losing things too.
Gladio lost his father too. There is a conversation with him where he tells Microsoft thst everyone has lost someone or something and it's how we deal with the situation that defines us. You can see why he is the way he is.

Yea that fight is the reason I have stocked up tons of curatives and pretty much overlevelled and gotyself a huge stat bonus via food for the last fight.

50% of thst fight I spent in the potion menu.

Yeh, I commented on this earlier. It's the part where they first meet Gentiana as a group.

Prompto asks Noctis if she's his guardian angel to which Noctis casually states "more like a messenger of the gods".

This and other conversations, like when Iggy discusses certain elements of mysticism and lore, and the group comment on how crazy it is that all this stuff is actually real, this all gives you a sense that you're discovering this world along with the characters and it can be incredibly endearing.

Just started the game yesterday evening.

This game just feels soooooo chill. I'm loving it so far.

I can see myself actually finishing this game. Which is the highest praise I can give to a game, mind you.

I'm gonna take it real slow though.

OK what the fuck am I doing wrong with the magic system

I have 3 slots,

Can't fucking create a spell no matter how much I put points into the it. No button prompt to create spell

You're wrong. :(

theres nothing in here that is at all like a turn based game. You roll, dodge, attack on instant button commands, you jump and chain attacks together, parry blows and counter attack. Cast magic like throwing a grenade while enemies are freely moving to respond. Even the damn wait mode only pauses the game if you are doing nothing at all

Holy shit. The quest with 2x lvl 75 Sir Tonberry is fucking brutal. I got my ass handed out to me even if I was level 67. Thankfully
Aranea saved the day and I resorted to parry snd counter while she made short work of them.
. Still one of the most intense fight I ever had in any game and I ran out of phoenix downs at the last minute.

For those in the know, is there a way to reassign AP points?
I just started chapter 3, so its not too late to start over before i get too far into the game.

Yes there is.

The various automated states and bars that slowly fill before firing off a defined automated action sequence all bridge the gap between turn based and action.

It's very much a hybrid system, one that relies on you embracing the automation and timing switching between various states in place of pixel precision action.

Just a quick ask because I don't want to read threads about the game just in case, but for a person who prefers the older style of FF game, PS1 and PS2 era, is there anything in this game for me?

For context, I loved FFX, thought 13 was bad and 13-2 an abomination. I never had the will to play LR.

The
Aranea "summon" just happened to me for the first time and I was left speechless. It was such an amazing, unexpected moment!

The PS1 games are my favorites in the franchise, and I can honestly tell you I'm loving this game (With the exception of a couple of dungeons). This is the most "Final Fantasy" a game in the franchise has felt in MANY years.
