It's a shame because it has some effective atmosphere and some potentially great story beats, but it all feels half-baked and overlong. If it had been refined to the standard of the previous chapters it could have been very good.
Agrred! Good story content that's been mindlessly diluted into a last ditch effort to increase the games length. I mean why didnt they lengthen the
frikkin shiva bit by adding a ice dungeon instead?

Finished it friday. Spending time today on some postgame stuff.

What a ride! I feel as though I'm one of the few who really enjoyed it (especially after reading the spoiler thread. Yikes.)

I'm still sifting through a lot of stuff in my head, but good god. It was enjoyable.

Spoilers for chapter 9 follow:

I fucking died when Ignis lost his eyesight. The scene where they leave Altissia and Prompto is guiding Ignis along the street and gesturing for him to stop. I teared up a bit. I'm not sure I can handle playing his DLC if that's what it's about, hahaha.

The following dungeon was equally heartbreaking. A lot of the animation changes were so subtle and spot-on, it's crazy.

I also enjoyed chapter 13 for what it was. I'll try and write up a lengthy post on the game at some point this week. I'm very very into it.

I felt more like if the opening chapters were done better/differently, they could've made the second half somewhat decent. Instead stuff just kind of happens and we're told to be happy or sad, without any real weight behind it. Like, we're told to feel things about the story beats, but never really shown why.

Or if they made a second half of the game that matches the first half, same thing. It just feels like two different games at some points. Kind of like, "Here's what we're telling you is happening, and here's what we're showing you is happening in the game you're playing" kind of thing.

People who disliked the game are a loud minority, that's all. The majority liked it or loved it (Check out the reviews it's getting). Happens all the time at GAF, with games like MGS4, MGSV, Uncharted 3, Bioshock Infinite, etc.

Remember, reading something is "trash" in GAF means absolutely nothing.

Liberi Fatali is such a beautiful song to go driving along too. People would complain if this happens but I really hope there is DLC later on that adds some more music from each of the games.. that or the additional scenarios come with more music to unlock. It's so nostalgic.

Not done yet, but I'm feeling the same as you. Really loving it. It'll probably end up as one of my fave FFs along with IX, VII and X.

Even if the story takes a nose dive (though I'm really looking forward to the ending), it won't really erase how much I love the four boys and how much I apparently care for them lol.

Just got the royal axe. When I stepped outside I ran into a lvl34 Coeurl. It pretty much put anyone in danger after 1 shot. I'm lvl15 but I managed to kill it with a poison level 99 venomcast and using Prompto's Piercer to interrupt it whenever it sat down to heal. I played defensively took pot shots and tried to look out for parry prompts. Poison seems so good against enemies that are high level and hard to dent. I really like it in games when I run into an enemy stronger than I and just taking it down through strategy and attrition instead of brute force feels so good. I don't care about the story too much to be honest, I really like side questing and killing things.

The more I think about it, the more I'm annoyed that everything people harp on Dragon Age: Inquisition for they give this game a pass with - 8 billion MMO fetch quests, wide open spaces with nothing in them, no incentive to move the plot forwards, lame villains. At least DAI's story is actually halfway good. Hell I think I like DAI's world better because it's at least more varied than grass, grass, bush, truck stop, grass, grass, water, grass. Emprise du Lion and Emerald Graves ftw.
IMO there are little touches here that make the map feel more alive than I'm DAI. DAI doesn't feel like a dynamic world. There is no time of day, few dynamic events or wildlife and NPCs, and the progression felt poor. At least with FFXV it seems a bit more atmospheric and alive. The side quests actually do give pretty nice rewards and the leveling system is somewhat satisfying.

Not to say that they don't have similar problems. But I'm finding FFXV more compelling so far.

The way I bursted out laughing at the dialog choices in Chapter 9 lmao

(You are about to sign a treaty with the minister, please be polite and behave correctly)

Noctis: so... you and Weskham are lovers or sumthing?

I've only found one dungeon so far and it was lvl 45, got me paranoid I'm missing a load of lower level ones, are there quests that send you out to them?

Pretty much. I'm only on chapter 3, and while there is a ton of things off with this game, there's plenty to to love too.

But mgs4 is trash.

I like Noctis and his group 'cause of the little things they say and how much of it they have to say. It really makes a difference and reminds me of how my friends would poke fun at each other irl lol. The pseudo-realistic setting does wonders too.

I dont know. A venice ripoff with low textures
I don't mind that they took inspiration from Venice. I don't even mind that they have some unreachable areas that are low res looking in pan shots.

What I do mind is that the part of the city I can enter (which is damn small anyways) feels basically empty and pointless. It's a shell, nothing more.

You probably won't have as big of a turn as some of us, but wait until you get further in to see what you think. Through chapter 3, I thought the game was rather good actually. It felt like it took a nose dive later on though.

Question regarding chapter 9:
do you go back to the first continent again? This umbra memory shit kinda messes with my canon but at the same time there's a bunch of stuff for me to do still

Super hyped games from major franchises that disappoint are absolutely trashed here on GAF (and other forums too). Expectations are just high when you've got highly rated and successful series such as the ones you've mentioned. I'm just trying to enjoy this game and take it all in - there are definitely some problems and nuisances, but there's definitely fun to be had, imo.

I think my Better Engine Blade quest is bugged. Cid won't take the horn and he isn't working on another weapon. Perhaps it's too soon? Chapter 6 right now.
Anybody knows what I should do please? Also the quest waypoint is sending me to some lighthouse in the South instead of Cid and I have the required mat for Ultima blade.

I'm not debating that. That's all true, but..

I'm saying haters are a minority in these cases. The vast majority is enjoying the game.

Yeah I am curious about that. It's gonna be a long time for me tho. Gonna take my time, as I want to wait for the December update and also I have kids. I only get so much time.

Started the game today after watching Kingsglaive last night. Five hours in and I'm really not feeling it.

Combat feels like a complete mess; too much shit going on, the lock-on is crap, the camera is terrible, everything feels sluggish and unresponsive. I'm getting good grades but I have no idea if I'm even doing it correctly.

Outside of combat it's just boring fetch quests everywhere. The very first thing that happens after all the intro stuff is that you get a quest to kill three wolves. Seriously? This is what Final Fantasy is now?

This used to be my favourite game series back in the PSOne days, but so far FFXV just doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy at all. I had really high hopes for this game and I'm gonna keep at it, hoping that it'll click eventually, but the first five hours have really just left me confused and disappointed.

I just posted very similar impression. To me this game is a Japaneese version of Bioware's DA:I. I'm glad im not the only one feeling this way. It feels like the emptier version and less polished one. Idk if it the case but maybe Tabata took too much inspiration from western games that he pretty much copied them.

I had to make a new rule for myself otherwise I would never advance the fucking story. I will not do side quests until they are under the level of the main story quest......I'm still on chapter 3 and am level 38 lol

I think you can beat the final chapter of the game with that level, along with lots of potions, elixirs, and downs. With your level get ready to press O to win. I would equip bad weapons and hold of leveling ascension to make the game more challenging if you are worried about anything like that.

Take ya time Nd enjoy it in your own bubble first. I commented when the Ot first went up Nd dipped didn't show up again until I was far enough to form my own opinion. It's divisive very much do but by no means a trash game. It's a good game id say. The constant stream of 8/10's I actually agree with.

And about ya kids pay Nd I assume wife/husband send them on vacation lol I did it to mine

Yeah I think Dragon Age Inquisition is what I'd compare this too.

Both are still really fun games, but they are both married with annoying issues such as a short story being padded out with mediocre side missions, which make me kind of disappointed despite enjoying them. Like they could have been so much more.

I don't think this happened because he copied them though. I think this is just a typical issue which can stem from making a vast open world. You end up spending so much time making the world, that you end up running out of time making the side quests and making the main campaign.

No there isn't. The last boss was tough too.
I just finished it 5 minutes ago lol

Yeah he was really difficult. I used up almost all my curatives and I was lvl 50 party.

The entire time I was thinking, please don't let this be the boss, because I had spent like 2 hours in there killing lots of stuff and figuring out what to do. I shouted in excitement after I killed it. Seriously thought I'd rage quit for the day if I died there lol.

Hey guys I'm on the way to Altissia right now. Are there any shops and such there? I'm bee lining it to that city with the hopes that there are shops there to upgrade my equipment. I've been using the same weapons for like the last 15 hours minus the Armiger weapons I've been finding.
Speaking of Armiger it's real frustrating that they are the most fun weapons to use each with their own move set of at least a modified set of attacks from the standard ones, yet I'm punished for using them.

Yeah, reason I said he copied them is because in interviews he's been saying that western inspiration was a big part of his design. Naughty Dog and CD Project being mentioned.

It's nice to see other people have the same sickness as me :) I believe it's best to own up to these things.

Yep. Now if only we were infectious, there'd be more big game studios prioritizing narrative content. :p

I get all that and do see those differences I'm not ignorant to them. But if you take the skin of DA:I and put it over FFXV and vice versa it will be a very similar game in my opinion. This feeling is probably coming from my personal disappointment in the game because after 10 years what I feel is that I got a DA:I the Japanese version. I am glad others are enjoying it I just asked because I was hoping someone will open my eyes to this enjoyment. I played DA:I for over 60 hours and got really burned out on that game and FFXV has gave me that exact feeling in the first hour and DA:I hasn't escaped my mind since the first scorpion I killed.

Gotcha. I can sort of see your point. I'm sorry you're not feeling it!

The only niggles I have right now with the story is a lot of stuff happening off screen lol.

Yep! That's my major grievance. It's my only big issue, but man, what I wouldn't give to have more cutscenes. I feel like a naive fool for saying this, especially since I'm typically the first person telling others to temper expectations in this industry, but... I really hope the DLCs and further patches throw some of that off-screen on-screen.

Quitcast magic is WAY OP when you can start using it, which is pretty quickly. Annihilated some bosses and harder hunts with just one or two casts.

Twenty hours in, Chapter 3 and Level 28 at the moment. I fucking love it.

Oh, and who cares about saving the world when you can catch frogs?
