People weren't joking about the lack of story. Good job I watched kingsglaive earlier to give some background to it.

Holy shit the frame pacing in hq mode is terrible, it really isn't worth it over light mode.

I honestly really like the fact that night was so dangerous early on in the game and that they forced you into combat.

It's all just a balancing act of abusing xp gain and wasting time doing nothing at night. Sets a really good pace for the gameplay loop in my opinion.

Does the game force you to rest/use exp st the end of each story mission? Or just at the end of the chapter? I'm trying to save my exp.

So the Adamantoise hunt
was very anti-climatic. A pop-up telling you the towns folk have come out of hiding and then you just hand it in like a regular contract.

I didn't even get the satisfaction of seeing all the XP tally. Just stealth added to my stock.

At least it's over with.

Now what can I do with
the meat?

I'm just doing it at the moment and man is it a dull ass fight.

Long fight, and it's not even difficult.

I'd rather have had a tougher boss with less health.

Honestly can't decide which one was worse, the
Adamantoise Hunt
or
Costlemark Castle
.

Both make Chapter 13 look like one of the better parts of the game.

You can speed it up tremendously if you use Ignis' enhancement skill 3 times in a row and attack his eye. Takes a little more focus than just attacking his arm, but it can be done in less than 30 minutes pretty easily.

Or at least different stages for the boss, like it shifts position and attacks and X health, or something...

The combat system isn't deep enough to support such a protracted fight unless you make the boss itself interesting to engage with.

Oh. I might try this on a replay just for the hell of it. Thanks.

Hmm not sure if I have that skill. It's almost dead now though. Taken like an hour of me occasionally watching the screen while watching the final of the dota 2 major on my monitor, lol.

True. I mean the only thing it really does it increase the frequency of its attacks...

Seriously. The worst parts of the story actually are incredibly well designed compared to the post-game.

Agreed, I like it too. I've been going fishing to pass the nights in safety, which works for me since I don't usually fish during the day and am less confident to attempt night-time monsters. Now I'm at level 30 we can fast travel at night, but I still plan to fish during those hours because I find it relaxing. Honestly I adore the amount of downtime and mundane activities this game offers - it's what I've always loved about RPGs. As such I find the core loop to be very satisfying :)

So the game is at 22 hours on howlongtobeat and even 18 hours for rushing. Is this true? I wasn't planning on getting this game because the character designs really rub me the wrong way (and the story I expect based on them), but being this short would be a huge plus.

For me it's gonna end up being about 24-25 hours. Had to go back and grind at a certain point (I mainlined story quests and ignored side quests) and I'm now at 25 hours played with the option to take on the last "boss/fight/dungeon." Not sure what it is, taking a break before diving back in.

It moves... until chapter 13. If you have the patience to push through something you will likely not enjoy for 1.5-2 hours the game is worth.

Yeah. The story really isn't very long. I mean I'd say you could probably rush it in 15 really.

Wow. Rested at a random motel and got a dialogue scene between Noct and Prompto. That was really cool and brought some much needed insight into his character. Crazy thats the only one I've seen in 12 hours.

The game needs more stuff like that.

Sometimes I
got teleported in the sky because the fight is glitchy as hell. Never out of range though. Hopefully it's like Yiazmat and it's HP doesn't recover. Game mentions it goes back into it's shell. Maybe it recovers HP slowly?

Someone rushed it in 10 hours, but that's obviously ignoring literally everything. I'm about 10 hours in and still in chapter 3. Lots of stuff to do.

It says
you have to restart the fight if you flee
. So unlikely.

But yes, it's a very buggy fight. Camera was constantly glitching through it's body, I was constantly getting stuck in weird places etc.

Yeah, no...you have to start over :/

Missed out on so much discussion since the impressions thread pre-release but I beat the game a while back and I'll drop some of my thoughts on it now that I'm back.

I want to start by saying that peple saying Kingsglaive was necessary in the impression thread... that was a load of bunk. I went into the game without having watched KG. Had no issue understanding the game up until chapter 9. After that chapter, so much weird, frankly absurd stuff happens that I don't even think watching KG would have done anything to help the story given how bad it got. I read up on the plot of KG post FFXV completion and I don't really see anything that helps me understand or enjoy the story any more then I did.

The story was a mess. Far too many characters. Absolutely worthless too (80% of the cast could've been cut for a far better game!). They needed to trim all of the Versus XIII fat away and just make it about the bros having to reclaim the throne.

In fact, the entire game post chapter 8 is a mess. The linear portions were a bore to play through because they just didn't remotely feel like they had half the love put into them that the first half of the game did. I would have loved a third open world area instead of the linear garbage we ended up getting.

With that said, somehow, despite as unearned as it was, the ending was still damn good. Chapter 14 in particular was both fun to play and great to watch and I wished there were more chapters like that instead of the other linear chapters we got.

Despite the story being a narrative mess, I really, really enjoyed my time with the first 8 chapters, chapter 14 and then the post game. The hunts are pretty good. The dungeons are fantastic. The feel of the game is fantastic and it's really unlike much of anything I've played. It reminds me a lot of the adventuring feeling I got in Dragon's Dogma but obviously in a much different context. A long night of hunting high level monsters, escaping from Iron Giant spawns and finally finding a camp ground to make camp in which transitions into absolutely relaxing music...

Just fantastic.

The combat is great too but shines more with certain weapons then it does others. The basic sword is pretty poor. However, the shield plus greatsword combo is by far and away the best to use. You can transition the shield's attacks into almost all of the best greatsword moves.which allows you to pull off some really nifty stuff.

For example, Prompto's black hole ability into a shield bash > insta-Great Sword charge is deadly. The shield stagger, step back into a great sword whirlwind is great as well. There's just quite a few transitions from the shield into the great sword that make it the best combo by quite a margin. The spear works just as well but the transitions are a bit more potion reliant and it's more aerial dependent so I don't use it as much. There's lots of small little combos or animation cancels or transitions that make the combat truly shine and a blast to play.

Overall, I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5. It's a fun, very flawed title sporting a good combat system and a beautiful world to explore. It also has great monster designs, a unique adventure feel and an absolutely graphically stunning area in Duscae.

OMG, I'm in chapter 14 now doing sidequest etc just driving at night when
the giant knight appeared. I figure I'm high enough level to try to kill him now, so I just fight him instead of running away, almost got my ass kicked, then, mid battle Areana suddenly showed up, becoming a guest party member and helped me kill the giant. that was so cool
I really love the stuff that can happened randomly in this game, like many of the dialog between the characters, the camping event etc.

Add Sealed door Steyliff Grove to the list.

But what takes the cake is that hidden dungeon, fuck that place.

Now thinking about it....the postgame stuff just isnt fun at all. It brings the worst out of the game

VIII was also my 1st and still my favourite. The 3 disc endings were absolutely magnificient (the Edea fight in the city, then the big battle between the 2 schools).
And the Laguna chapters were perfect in between.

In terms of story though, It kinda got messy after disc 2, and I barely knew what was going on after that. Maybe because I was 12 years old also though lol.

I totally agree with you. From my relatively small sample size of experience with Final Fantasy, (having only finished VI, VII, VIII and XV), they have good stories with pretty poor storytelling, and its very obvious in XV because by now they should know better. Disc 2 was just all over the place when I was still kid, but I did read up on it a few years later and was certainly more interested by the end result.

Man I know people hate the story but chapters 7-15 is some good stuff to me especially 10-15.

Personally, I don't even hate the story. I just wish it was more focused.

I read that they're going to add stuff to fix the story. I wish we got a condensed version.

Remove the useless characters like Ravus, Aranea etc. I feel that alone would make the game much better.

So yeah, the game just spoiled a big event D:

Chapter 3 and 4 spoilers
I am in Chapter 3 and went to visit the Disc (Ignis suggested it) and as the army came out of the blockade the door glitched and I got through, went down and picked up the mystic blade and then BAM, suddenly, Titan. Looks like I skipped all of Chapter 3 by mistake, thanks glitch!

I reset though, didn't want to be spoiled any more ;_;

Steyliff was definitely excessive, but I have been enjoying most of the post-game. Pitioss was actually pretty fun and incredibly satisfying.

I legit do not recommend the post-game. Might be the worst in the series. Not because it doesn't have quantity, but because it just takes the game's problems, and bring them to the forefront (messy combat, poor difficulty, bad level design) and the strengths (the bromance) end up as weaknesses (the 'bromance" is artificial and automated as fuck from pictures to the banter).
