So I just finished watching Kingsglaive to prep for starting XV tonight, and I'm kinda surprised that I enjoyed it considering all the hate it got. Sure, it wasn't an Oscar winning movie or anything, but as a prologue to the FFXV story it was pretty entertaining. The thing I'm most surprised by though is how utterly vital to the plot it seemed, and it's kind of worrying that the devs thought it was a good idea to put all this into a movie completely separate from the game.
Now, I'm wondering if I should bother watching Brotherhood too, and if I should stick with English after watching the movie in English or just go with my original plan of playing the game in the original Japanese. Any thoughts from people who've played the game in both languages?
The following systems may not be broken, but they just don't work well for me:
1. Point warp during battle: only worked for me in tutorial
2. circle button is mapped for both running and starting attack near enemies: you would attack when just wanting to run by, which brings me to the next point
3. random enemy encounter: yes, believe it or not, from the imperial army to sudden appearing of wild lives, this latest mainline FF still features random encounter that you just can't easily avid (see number 2)
4. cross button for action (picking things up) and jumping: they mess up ALL THE TIME
4. fishing: i need a longer time to figure out how it works. maybe because i've played fishing in monster hunter too much, which is a far more intuitive system
1. Make sure you deselect your hard lock-on and you have to hold triangle to point warp, and you have to be looking at a warp location.
2. You can just click the left stick for sprint to keep it separate, that's what I do.
3. You can pretty easily avoid them, just sprint away. On a chocobo it's even easier.
4. Totally agree, I hate how x is the button to pick shit up and to jump.

I noticed there's a demo on the store page. Is this a new demo? How long is it, and does progress transfer? I can't get the game for a few days but I will go ahead and start the demo if it saves your progress.
edit: nevermind, I see it's the platinum demo. lame
Just finished Chapter 1. Man, this game is aggressively terrible in almost every way so far.
First of all, the story. Jesus Christ they fucked the pooch here. It makes no sense, and the presentation is all wrong. So... (Ch 1 ending spoilers)
The empire attacks during the treaty signing that we've heard almost nothing about (not enough context or worldbuilding at all), and we get these epic fucking cuts from Kingsglaive that are way out of place. It's like something from a different game. Then we cut to the morning... and the guys find out about this thing that happened literally two miles away - a literally apocalypic battle in their backyard... and they find out about it from the morning newspaper?!? Even if they couldn't hear it, if there was no ruckus outside... this is in a world with smartphones?!? So there's no way to make the reaction scene to this normal, and they don't.
But what do they do next. Call someone, right? No. They drive to the city, sneak up to a hill (where you can't see shit, was majorly disappointed), and once they've seen that the city is indeed fucked... they bust out the smartphones and start dialling!
Not only that, but this fucking Noct kid communicates with Luna through a book... delivered by a fucking DOG! I thought this was supposed to be a fantasy based in reality! Luna is just introduced in this random-ass cutscene walking down the road... there's no context at all. And after all of this action... you're sent back to wandering in the desert.
I absolutely couldn't have imagined how bad this would be. It's Frankenstein's monster, but the head is on the end of one leg and its cock is where its head should be.
That's just the story. The combat is messy and hard to read. Lock on is inconsistent. It all feels too loose for me... like you're not truly controlling the flow of the fight.
As for interacting with things, usually I have to press X two or three times before it will go through. The game just feels sloppy that way. Framerate is terrible, visuals are dull and inconsistent.
And as for the open world, it's awful so far. There's nothing interesting out there, it's just a bland desert. XCX is leagues ahead of this, but so is FF14. If there was anything interesting you don't really have enough camera control to enjoy it anyway. What's worse, though, is that you aren't given the tools to move through this huge world so you end up just running through the desert for blocks of 3-5 minutes at a time.
Why can't I drive the car manually? Why do none of the 'return to car' features ever work? Why is the map so inconsistent with when and where it shows markers? Why is there sometimes a marker out in the desert that signifies nothing and can't be interacted with?
I'm still not giving up, but it couldn't be going worse right now. There is not one single thing I could point to and say 'this game does this well'. Fuck, man... I spent 70 euros on this.

1. You have to slightly hold the button. Just tapping it doesn't work.
2 and 3. I don't understand these points. I've literally just ran past enemies 20 levels higher than me and they never touched me. You can run away from anything with incredible ease.
4. It takes a little while to get but it's pretty easy.

Yeah, I've been watching it on and off between doing shit around the house so I'm not finished with it yet, but more than halfway through and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Got the patch downloaded too, and watching this to get more information and what all happens before the game starts has made me even more hyped to start it after I finish Brotherhood.
Also, it's way fuckin better than Spirits Within and Advent Children, though those are bars that aren't exactly even off the ground by a centimeter.
Oh shit forgot this was coming, it sounds like it is better than 13, I don't play much video games anymore(last game I bought was Uncharted 4, and before that it was MGS5), so is it worth the $60?

I'm not gonna read the spoilers, but since I care a great deal about the story in these types of games your early impressions are worrying (though I've heard the ending is good, which is usually enough to save things for me). I'm curious though, did you watch Kingsglaive? I've yet to start XV yet, but having just finished watching the movie it seems like it covers a TON of the plot setup, and I've heard that's the stuff that's lacking in the game itself.

I did watch Kingsglaive and enjoyed it. But a game should be a self-contained story, so I am NOT judging the story in this game based on what I saw there. The whole 'read this novel / comic to get the backstory' thing some games do is pure bullshit.
If the story in this game doesn't work without the Kingsglaive stuff then it should never have been cut from the game.

Yea the story is poorly but some things like not contacting anyone is cause they don't have connection to the Crown city until they get nearby. That's why the radio appears once they get to appear cause Prompto was trying to listen to it. I don't see the big deal with writing on the book.
I was thinking about going with the german dub, especially after people praised it. But no lip-sync and Cindy sounding like a 60 year old chain smoker make it no go.
The english one sounds really good imo. Decisions, decisions.
Got my copy, installed and pleasantly surprised there was Multiple Audio and text choices. I figured audio was in but getting text too was really sweet. It'll be nice to switch when I feel like it.
I'm tempted to stream but the only thing I'd bring to the table would be pointing out differences between the JP and ENG scripts when it comes to the translation/localization.

There was a little clip of the game after the credits of Kingsglaive that I just saw (in English) and I was immediately convinced to play the main game in Japanese. The lack of lip syncing makes everything sound incredibly awkward.
So far a bit of an underwhelming beginning, alas only played one hour. Also, god damn at the frame pacing at HQ. Lite mode has too much shimmering and aliasing and HQ has good IQ but bad frame-pacing. Argh.

Gonna spoiler everything out of safety. Chapter 1 spoilers:
Dude... he has a cellphone. And yet to communicate with his finance he has to write in a diary and get a dog... to deliver it... to wherever in the world Luna is... and this dog is able to find her and get it to her, and she can send it back...
Sorry, that's fucking tripe. That's codswallop placed in there for some bizarre sentimental reason.
The road to the city is less than two miles away! You drive there right after that cutscene. There is no way 20-storey demons could be rampaging about and they'd have no idea.
And the idea that no one would call Noct as it was happening is absurd, too. Shit, everyone in the hotel would be freaking out, the hotel would probably sound an alarm etc etc. War has broken out, people!
I dunno. Picking your favourite FF movie is a lot like choosing your favourite XIII entry. They're all kind of bad in their own ways, but have their odd merits that certain rare people will click to in different ways. No one's gonna agree which one is best.
You might say that Spirits Within is the most coherent as a movie, being that it is a relatively polished Hollywood film that adheres to a standard structure.
You might also say that Advent Children is at least a fun FF-themed romp, not mobbed down by dour and awkward exposition like both SW and KG.
I can see the argument for KG as well but it isn't all that fun or coherent.
And it couldn't be better. I'm big fan of having both the car and Chocobo be heavily relied on to be honest. They really do cover all scenarios having a hands off alternative, or access to fast travel and then the birds to take care of exploration over long distances. It was incredibly liberating taking the Chocobo across the plains to the city for the first time after being stuck in the Duscae boundary for so long.

That's actually pretty valuable. The English script matches with the English voices, not the Japanese voices. I'm playing with the Japanese voices, and I wish there was a better script to match (perhaps thats asking too much).

They had phones when they were kids? Cause they don't show that. The City isn't 2 miles way. Also in Kingsglaive they attacked from another side of Insomnia (the Galad area or whatever).
I'm not saying it isn't poorly told but these have answers or aren't that dumb. Just wait till you get to the later chapters.
dream-like wedding that Noctis has with Luna after he dies didn't feel like a solid conclusion but I guess it does the job of having the game without a sequel to be spawn.
Overall the game is solid and a lot better than I intial thought it was.
Put 3 hours into the game now. Loving everything about it so far. Combat is so much better than I was expecting.
Oh and the soundtrack is amazing. Between 'Wanderlust' and the slower, ambient version of 'Valse di Fantastica' that plays while out wandering the wilderness, this game has the best "world map" music in the whole series.
The diary thing is a super nitpick. It's how they communicated as kids and it's a cute idea. Have you never gotten a birthday card or something physical? It's a diary of their life.
Sure, the phone thing, whatever. But the diary thing being called out is super lolworthy.

The dogs are more than dogs (or so they are according to a loading screen) and this is a video game. . .did you really expect them to put legitimate distance in the game? I mean I can see being upset that everything that is happening while Noctis is out of the city occurs in a movie, but this seems petty.
What is suppose to be part of the December update? Kind of weird for them to release the game have a day one patch and then talk about another patch in December.
