Chapter 3, exploring doing hints/side quests.

Absolutely loving this. I didn't go into it expecting the open world to be anything more than the standard FF level design but more open, which is exactly what I wanted.

I spend a vast amount of time in every FF just wandering and grinding/leveling. It's like some kind of zen garden for me. I get why some would be disappointed if they wanted something more akin to, say, TW3's open world, but this is FF exploration at its best imo.

Something about this game's systems just prevents it from feeling like a miserable collectathon for me.

Combat really is good when you get the rhythm of it. Anyone thinking it's too loose or imprecise really needs to take a step back.

Timing of parties for links, techs, combos like using an ability that gathers targets then bombing win magic, it's a brawl but a controlled one. So far it's the exact right mix of action and tactical.

The latter was my biggest concern coming in. Turn based has always been my preferred system for these games, and while it still is the current battle system is good enough to keep me focused. Very pleased.

I personally love how exp is handled. Receiving it at the end of the day slightly builds up anticipation for it, and makes retina actually fun (in combi with other activities there obviously).

Same. It adds to the sense of adventure/exploration. I love the sense of camaraderie it builds between the guys.

I asked already, but is there a random toggle for the music in the car?

Its such a brilliant idea.

Makes camping/inns/food that much more interesting as game mechanic rather than good ol' hp recovery.

I don't think I can play this game with JP voices on. Tetsuya Kakihara (Prompto) is grating on me too much. English voice cast is good though Gladio is a bit rough. JP voices don't really change the weird pacing/mixing issues that make VAing feel off either.

The English VA is actually better in some scenes, especially any scene with Luna. Her English VA is really good.

I just started Ch.3 after close to 20 hours. I've done about 40 or more side quests. Doing side quests helps a lot for resources and AP gains. Chocobos are sooo good for exploration.

I am REALLY glad I watched Kingsglaive before I started this. With it, it feels like I got a complete introduction to the world and story, but without it I think I'd be pretty pissed at being dumped into this world with ZERO context. Brotherhood helped too, but Kingsglaive was essential. Really dumb move on Square's part to make all that into a separate movie.

Finally playing! About 4 hours or so now, and just about to go to Galdin Quay while I wait for it to be nighttime so that I can take on this goblin hunt I've signed up for. Gonna be really risky doing that, though. Learned it the hard way when I tried to take on an Iron Giant... and then a whole bunch of Bombs showed up.

I'm really enjoying combat. It feels good and it's a lot of fun warping around and attacking together with the bros, but... I still can't figure out all the attacks for the weapons. I figured out how to do the "lunge" attack with the polearm, and I think I also figured out how to do tempest with the two-handed sword? Doesn't seem to be the same with Platinum, though, where we have to hold the attack button after the animation of an attack. Can't charge it at all.

Anyway, how do I do that move with the polearm where Noctis pushes himself into the air above his enemies? I've done it a lot, but have no clue how.

For me, english Gladio, Ignis and Cindy are too much to tolerate. they sound like cartoons, same way jpn Prompto does.

Well, more like a cartoon comparatively, I guess, as everyone sounds a bit cartoony in both dubs.

That is a link strike, I believe. It triggers automatically depending on position w.r.t AI and we can increase its chance by wearing an accessory.

Kinda figured. I'm going back to English anyway, lol

The Lore Guide before you start gives a basic routine of the world but yeah, it's really strange that they didn't start this off better after the debacle that was FF13

Does anyone know if you can delete individual saves?

I wish they let you get rid of quests from the quest list. I can't stand seeing uncompleted quests there but some are just way too high level and the other ones are those dumb weapon upgrade quests.

This game is killing me. Fuck my OCD.

I've been mostly kept in the dark for this..

I watched the movie + the anime beforehand, and I wish I would have done it in the order of movie > anime.

The reason being is that (anime spoilers)
the anime gave away the father dying..
.

So yeah... anyone reading this and still completely in the dark, do movie > anime.

I haven't watched anything amd the story so far (Chapter 3) feels perfectly fine in how it's delivered.

I like the sense of detachment from the main events of the narrative, it makes it feel like we're mounting some kind of guerrilla campaign against the enemy as we slowly build our strength.

It's not world class story telling or anything, but I'm not feeling the negatives yet.

I didn't play the Platinum Demo cause people were saying you only need to play it if you want to name your carbuncle but, since the intro I haven't seen him in the game yet. Do you get him later on?

I believe he's an Easy mode only summon. An auto-revive or something like that.

Lock-on works for me. I can do the lunge with the spear with forward + attack when I am locked on.

Loving all the impressions, especially from those who were skeptical :D

Just to be clear, I'm referring to the lunge that has a second or two of startup and hits multiple times. I think every time I've done it, I've been holding back (again - is that supposed to be down on the stick, or away from the enemy?), but a lot of the time I do a different series of attacks with the same input.

9 hours in, midst of chapter 2, just did a really cool dungeon, level 16

Shame they didn't go with a weapon-wheel system, 3 slots (1 for magic) isn't enough imo. Would like to use guns and daggers on occasion, but can't be bothered with switching them in and out through the menu

Loving it

Trying to do a hunt called Raindrops In The Night, but the enemy didn't appear. Will try again later. How do the bros decide when to use their secondary weapons? Got the Bioblaster on Prompto, but I'm not sure if he uses it correctly.

What are we thinking English voices or Japanese?

I'm still super torn. The Japanese VA's sound more natural and I'm already used to them, but since the subs are using the English localization that matters a bit less . Plus, with the amount of banter that goes on between the guys, I'm finding myself looking down to read A LOT, even though I've only played for about an hour and a half.

English, some scenes in the later parts of the game actually have strong VA and you'll get used to the weird accents after a while.

Cool :) Thanks dude!

Second question: I bought the collectors edition with Kingslaive. Should I watch that before I start?

I think you've been misled. The game starts with saying that you receive your carbuncle as a minor summon, so my guess is that it is a platinum demo exclusive. Other summon are amazing enough, though, so you won't miss out too much without it.

I don't know if platinum is still available, but if it is, then you can play it (lasts no more than half an hour) and get it anyway probably. Don't know for sure though.

Oh, no, it's definitely not a link strike. It's a move like tempest and the lunge attack. I'm just not sure what I have to do to do it... Tried holding circle or pushing the left stick forward, and it sometimes works, but I'm pretty sure it's not it.

Different directions do different moves, like with noctis engine blade you can perform a backflip by holding down on the analog. Also, with a greatsword after you swing and pause for a sec and press again noctis will do tempest.

First venture into the night...o look a giant ha I can do it I'm lvl 26, o..no a drop ship... alright no problem..what's that? Another iron giant? Alright let me bust out the good magic...ha..ha A THIRD iron giant all at the same time.

I hate you daemons lol

I know Japanese and the VA feels a bit better, but I feel that for some reason English fits the world and realistic look of the game more. If it had a more anime aesthetic I'd play 100% Japanese.

I never saw him and looking around, he feels useless.

I played the Platinum Demo so I unlocked Carbuncle. However, the ONLY time I've seen it so far is on a photo that Prompto took near the first tomb. It just shows there, walking around the area like nothing.

I was like what the hell? o_O

Chapter 6 spoilers

The road travel with Iris was nice, for a brief moment I felt the classic FF in there, just traveling doing side stuff along the road in the middle of the actual narrative and not sone stupid sidequest about collecting rocks. Next time I would like not to be told about side stuff, I'd like to explore it myself. Also, it just kinda ended too soon.

So took me 4.5 hours to get through the first chapter. Calling it a night. Really enjoying it so far.

Also, when transitioning into chapter 2,
I heard some epic music and went "woah, now what?" And then the screen started to fade in and I went "wait, this sounds familiar." Then realized I left the car on Liberi Fatali from FF VIII. LOL. It fit so perfectly, especially with the fade in from black. Really created a fitting tone for the car ride to hammerhead in light of the revelations to Noctis and company at the end of chapter 1

Yeah, I can't do the JP voices at all. KAKIHARAAAAAAA

Also, is it me or Type-B control scheme is significantly better than Type-A?

I switched to English and heard them speak in a cutscene... It just sounds cheaper, and way more inconsistent since some characters are way better than others. Gladio sounds bored, and lol at Cindy/Cidny.

I just switched to Type-B and it feels pretty good. That seems to be what a lot of people have been recommending too.

What makes you dislike the JP voices?
