Not equipping any. Most of us I've seen here aren't equipping any rings and the game is still a cakewalk. Hell, I'm intentionally not even upgrading my equipment to add some challenges and still breezing through it.

Praise SE all you want for "giving NG+ for free and at launch", but the game should have had a hard mode at launch and I think it's fair they get criticized for that. This is something which they'll probably add later like they did afterwards for KH3 and DQ11 after many people complained how easy those games were.

Wow, such a gamer. Everyone should as good as you. Devs looking down at average gamers 😠. Don't they know the popular Souls difficulty is the standard nowadays. People can just youtube the story if they can't git gud

Come on, you have to admit the game is not very challenging. FF typically is not.


As a side note what's with the
mega flare ability? Seems awesome but massive combat flow disrupter to just float around while it charges so slowly. Thoughts?
 
Just when you think the game has peaked, it somehow manages to top itself.

The Bahamut Eikon boss fights flying over Twinside, then in low-orbit space. Megaflare, Gigaflare, Teraflare. Zettaflare. My god.
That family reunion, Ifriti & Phoenix fusion, the Mother Crystal blooming. That was the most Final Fantasy shit I've ever seen.
They have to take FFXVII in a completely different direction because I have no idea how they'll be able to top these boss fights.

Also, Ultima reminds me so much of Necron from FFIX.

If you do perfect dodges, it fills incredibly quickly. Pop it before an attack, dodge into it for the perfect dodge.

I saw someone on the PSN clips take on a S tier boss and that was the first thing they started off with. They also burned through their potions trying to charge it all the way. I haven't messed with it.

I finished NG tonight.
I have some very mixed views about it. Awesome fights, but the story wasn't doing it for me. I have better things to say about the combat than the plot. I honestly liked Final Fantasy VIII's plot more even though XVI has some crazy boss fights you won't get anywhere else. It had good bosses, but I seriously wanted to skip a lot of the plot.
I liked Ultima being the villain.I sorta wish I didn't have GoW's Odin stuck in my head. The final showdown was 100x better than the Odin fight. I didn't get the Final Fantasy vibes from this. I got the feeling like I have with DMC mixed in with some big boss battles.

But after playing Zelda Totk my interest raises.
Is there a physics aspect in Final Fantasy?

All I see are Combos!

What's the secret of FF?
 
I started it today. I didn't get very far. Just past the first Eikon battle. Not going to judge the game until I play several more hours. I came in with lower expectations though because I haven't enjoyed an FF(sans FFVII remake) in a while and I'm not really into action games much.

So far a ton of cut scenes for sure. Skill Up said 75% cut scenes and said he wasn't exaggerating. I don't know if he ball parked it or did an official calculation. I hope he's wrong on that though.
 
I have been progressing in the story more and more, about 25hrs in, and I must say that storywise FFXVI is easily a Top 3 in the whole series --Tactics and Remake included.

In my book, because of its maturity, it's a serious candidate for the best story in the franchise, my Top 1. I just hope they didn't get so inspired in Games of Thrones that they'll screw it up in the end.

Eikon : Garuda. Half stagger extension is too good.

  • Gouge for will damage
  • Ignition : multihit for stagger damage build up
Board 3 : Finisher
Eikon Ramuh. It's shit but Judgement Bolt too expensive to master
Ability
  • Windup : Great Damage, multihit too
  • Judgement Bolt : Heavy damage

Can you suggest good ability to replace those?

One that I can firmly said is the summons. The spectacle when these great beings enter the battlefield and wreak havoc. Either when you summon it at battle or in cutscene. FF XVI do a good represntation of it with the Eikons.
 
Aaaaah can't take it anymore. This stupid ass motion blur is insanely retarded. I tried performance mode and while it's better, I still can't handle panning camera. It feels as if my eyes become unfocussed whenever I pan the camera. I will just wait for the motion blur patch for now. Had never happened to me with any game before (playing on a LG G2 OLED).

Any ETA on the motion blur patch?

Precision dodging fills it up quickly, and if you equip Satellite and Impulse, you can use them while attempting to charge it. Pop impulse then use the quick dodge you can still manually explode impulse while in Bahamut form.

So I finished the game and have everything done but the max all skill, and finish the game on Final Fantasy mode trophies.

There is a lot to unpack in that ending, I will post once I have digested it. Instant reaction, it is firmly in my top 2 FF games and definitely my GOTY so far. The last part of the story is definitely Final Fantasy. That ending though, man.
 
Unlocking the next Eikon ability tree makes the combat even more epic if that were even possible, the visual and sound effect on Perfect Block + Counter is 💯 and nice to see a unique gauge requiring perfect timing for max dmg on one of the new abilities.

33h in and this is well on it's way to be being in my top 3 FF's, nevermind GOTY which is pretty much a lock, I can only see Armored Core 6 challenging it.
 
Here's some new screens from yesterday, just locales not straight story spoilers I guess. I'm moving very slow compared to most here but the game's huge and there's always something to spend time with being just exploring or tackling few quests. Also why saying this game has small maps? It's actually the largest FF world I walked into not considering 14. Areas are huge?

Ok so fired up NG+ and found that song I was looking for. It's Shivas' song. It plays at the very begging after phoenix gate when you fight Jill. I blew her up so fast the first time around I never even heard it LOL. The fight felt amazing in NG +.

I have to say a few of you were right. The hard mode should have been in from the start, I didn't know that there is a mode that is even harder than that called Ultima mode. Hard is also more fun right from the start it's a small gripe but that was a bad decision. I thought hard was the top but as it is not it should be available from the word go.

My final verdict is 9.7 out of 10.

When did I say it had to have Souls difficulty? Game should have had a hard mode OPTION on the first playthrough for players who wanted a decent challenge. More power to you if you want to use the rings, but almost every triple A game nowadays has difficulty modifiers or options and don't require NG+.
 
I might have to be done until a patch. The noise is unbearable and takes me out of the game completely. This sucks because the game is really fucking good.

No high pitch noises when Jill is on camera. Then when she's behind you, it's loud and clear.

Either you're trolling or you need to see a neurologist. The only "noises" are the ambient, environmental ones of birds chirping etc. Some of the people on this forum man lol

No, I hear the birds chirping. That noise is ok. It sounds more like a crackle snap type sound. Only happens when Jill id behind Clive. It didn't do it when acid was in my party.

It's not my sound bar, as I hear it with headphones.
 
Well, almost finished with the first play through. Just going to finish up the rest of the hunts and side quests. Looking forward to trying hard mode.

EDIT: Still have some chronoliths left too, but maybe I'll save those for hard mode.

Ff16 is the opposite of zelda.

The only physics you see is scripted during eikons fights and some nice effects with the flora when you launch some big ass magic but the combat system piss all over zelda is not even funny.

Completely different experiences.

Do everything in normal playthrough except upgrading all abilities.

It's just bad sound mix. I had to set the effects settings to 5 because it was so annoying.

Just 100% the game (pre-NG+, but that's for later) and here are my thoughts:

Positives
  • Combat both looks and plays really well (despite the framerate being a constant hinder, see below)

  • Beautiful art direction with most of the vistas and scenery being completely jaw droppingly good

  • Music is exceptionally good as well as being very memorable

  • The mature themes that are set in the world is a very welcome addition to the franchise. Blood, nudity and curse words are one thing; but showing the player people who've been tortured and child labor as well as many other mature themes is a step in the right direction

  • The hunts are a thrill to do, although it doesn't quite hit the mark as well as XII did for a few reasons, one being the sense of threat not being present in equal caliber

  • Some (although very few in comparison to the abundance of quests) side quests are very well written

  • Set pieces are, bar none, moments that truly define the Final Fantasy games

  • Cid is one of my favorite Cids in all of FF

  • Dialogue of the MSQ is incredible

Negatives
  • The game drops a ridiculous amount of upgrade materials… but there is almost nothing that require even 1/10th of the materials?

  • Upgrading in general feel like an afterthought. Never did I actually find myself in a situation where I would go: "wow, can't wait to go to the blacksmith and see what this leads to!".

  • Items in general feel extremely lackluster and uninspired. I can prove and summarize this whole thing by saying that Genji Gloves; an iconic accessory throughout the franchise for its multiple different purposes in the different games; simply makes Clive "5% stronger". Boring!

  • Jill is yet another case of people hyping up a Final Fantasy character (often female) to almost obsessive levels and then reality remains; she is one of the games most under-developed character and is there primarily to make Clive feel good about himself at times

  • The player feeling disconnected from the world as you, at occasions, have to go out to the world map when entering new zones. In FFXII, for example, almost every zone is interconnected with each other

  • The majority of the side quests are 2004 MMO quality. The structure of these quests are almost always identical to each other - and the low quality script for these quests doesn't help the matter at cause

  • There's this trend that Square-Enix have been hopping on lately. This trend is present in almost all of their releases as of late. In the process of you discovering the world, you'll end up meeting many different characters. In FFXVI (and many other releases), you'll end up finding 3 "important" NPCs. These "important" NPCs are in reality just boring NPCs but Square has decided that these 3 in particular are "special" so the game forces you to engage with them over and over again - for different reasons each time, but the quests are almost always identical. The static low-budget in-game cutscenes along with the horrid lip sync and terrible writing make these moments the most painful in the entire game

  • Restricted to the use of 3 (!) Eikons and only 6 primary abilities. I found myself maxing out the potential of the 4-5 sets of combos I could implement - because the game forced me to be locked to 3 Eikons

  • Far and beyond the worst technical performing game I've ever played on the Playstation 5. This one's mind-boggling to me. Even a week after playing, I still couldn't get used to the drops in framerate. This negative specificially and single-handedly subtracts an entire point of my total rating

  • Locking on to the enemy and/or switching targets in-battle is by far the hardest challenge in the game. It is absurd how an AAA Final Fantasy in 2023 can't even get locking on to enemies right - especially coming from Stranger of Paradise that does locking on and switching really well

  • Way too many MSQ cutscenes were using the in-game engine (static animations and bad lip-sync). There are scenarios in the game that could've really used motion capture and just higher budget cutscenes in general, but were instead gutted to uninteresting robot-like scenarios

  • The sense of urgency in the main quest is often lacking because of how often you have to go back to the camp

  • There is no sense of distance in the world. The time it should take for a character to travel between the continents should be noticeable in-game, but we see NPCs travel between massive parts of the world in mere minutes. The results of this is that the world feels smaller than it actually is

  • It pains me to say this but although the music is incredible in many ways; there aren't enough of them. The amount of times the same music is repeated during cutscenes is to an absurd level. I also don't agree with most of the music that were being used during the side quests. Some of these songs should've remained exclusive to the MSQ but instead are plastered all over random side quests like Barry who's sad that his apples are stolen by random bandits. I would've also loved to have every region of the game have its own battle-theme

  • The lack of enemy variety. I guess it's on par with games like XV and XIII… but I can't stop thinking about how there weren't even that many COLOUR variations

  • Also, where in the flying fucks are cactuars and tonberries? For this alone I would subtract 50 points… there was absolutely no reason to not have these iconic enemies in the game. I don't give a fuck if it doesn't fit your games "thematics", cactuars could've 100% been a hunt in the desert and a master tonberry should've been hiding in… well, you know exactly where if you've come far enough into the game

  • Locking hard difficulty to NG+. I used zero accessories throughout the entire game and barely used any potions. This is by far the easiest Final Fantasy (on par with XV) to date and it's not even a contest

  • No real end game. No real grind. No super boss. Come. The. Fuck. On.


Nitpicks
  • Logo drop (both the very early one and post-intro-one) isn't as good as the many incredible logo drops of previous Final Fantasy games

  • Having to play the game and then restart the game to see the Final Fantasy menu + logo is not a direction I like

  • Not being able to charge your sword without Clive attacking the air once.

  • No real status ailments and lack of elemental weaknesses. The game tells you, upon retrieving a new Eikon, that your spells' element changes… but there's basically no difference in damage if you i.e. use fire on Bomb, etc.

Key points like no real feeling of danger, the logo, going back to camp and the empty dialogue are spot on IMO. Those missions inside the camp could have happened inside a multiple towns and they killed the feeling of a threat occurring elsewhere. I'll take multiple cities with different shops over that. The fights were cool, but it makes me miss everything from FFXII and before. Makes me want to replay XIi.

the behemoth was a cool fight, but it was so short lived. Was toneberry or cactuar even in this? I didn't sense that an Omega weapon was in this or was there?
