For those wondering why there weren't that many onboard shots today, this is the only race still being done by a local director. It used to be this way every race. Every country had their own race director for broadcast TV, which meant the quality varied a LOT from race to race.
F1 got rid of that years ago, but somehow this Monaco guy survived so this is what you get. He completely missed the first 2 pitstops during the second lap, hardly any onboard shots, awful directing.

Oh, right, NASCAR switched to a "3 stages" system where the races aren't even races for the officially billed distance anymore. Okay, that's enough motorsports for me. It's effectively 2 sprint races and a feature race, run back-to-back, where the final race is 1.5-2x longer. Points are awarded at the end of each stage.

Aren't the Japan races still done by the locals? That may have ended a few years ago. A shame though. You could run the onboard for any chasing car for the entire race in Monaco and it would be more exciting than watching the cars circulate.
Even if you don't like it at least they are trying to do something to spice things up. Last year this race had barely any action and one guy led 392 laps out of 400.
F1, especially Monaco could use some of that. Give points for qualifying etc.

All the onboard shots I saw were hampered by signal disruption, so I think that's part of the issue.

Ferrari basically just copied their direct competitors (Mercedes, Red Bull) and responded to their pit stops. Pitting the leader first as a response to your direct competitors would be a completely uncontroversial decision in any other race. Especially given the fact that Räikkönen's pace had been dropping off for many laps at this point relative to the other teams. This was one of the rare times where the overcut was actually the better strategy, as evidenced by Ricciardo, who basically did the very same thing to Verstappen. So yes, it is very plausible that this was simply a reasonable and common call that turned out to be unfortunate for Kimi.
At the very least, any alleged intent to sacrifice Kimi was not as obvious as people like Crofty are spinning it to be. Unless one really wants to defend the position that it was totally obvious to Ferrari that Kimi would be slower on fresh super-softs compare to Vettel on used ultra-softs not just for 1-2 warm-up laps, but for multiple laps after the pitstop.
If Kimi had not lost time before his pit stop and had gotten up to speed quicker after his pitstop, he would not have lost the lead. Vettel was much quicker than Kimi on the laps leading to Kimi's pitstop and for 5-6 consecutive laps afterwards. At the same time, coming out behind Wehrlein and Button cost Kimi under a second at most.
Both Ricciardo and Vettel were posting fastest race laps for 5-6 laps each during that time. They both had a clear track and faster tires and were able to pull a significant (virtual) gap.

The compounds of tyre basically werent running out of grip mixed in with the fact its Monaco + cant follow, so if you had good race pace it was just a point of finding some clean space on the track to push hard.
Id argue an undercut would work too, but as soon as someone pits for an undercut, someone else does too, that had a knock on effect where drivers who tried to undercut came out back into traffic still, so staying out longer wasnt really a deap breaker in terms of pace as the tyres clearly werent falling off a cliff and still had pace in them and goig to brand new harder compound wasnt exactly a ln advantage in terms of outright pace.
What it all added up to was a race where you couldnt overtake so what you ended up with was a race where you could only under or overcut on pit strategy and after that, you couldnt do shit.

I think there was mention on the Sky feed that Ferrari thought the tires weren't warming up fast enough on the road as well, making the new tire benefit nil for the first few laps.

I was very lucky in that I was able to check a bucket list item this weekend which was to go to the Monaco GP. I got there Friday with my buds and we immediately went and walked the track which was really cool. Formula 1 and all of their sponsors put on a really nice party, it was expensive but I don't drink much nowadays so whatevs. It was awesome to walk the tunnel, the Fairmont hairpin, the starting grid etc. Literally a dream come true for me.
Saturday was great except for Lewis sucking. We went to our designated watch location and met with a bunch of people. FP3 and Q1-3 were epic. People cheering the whole time. Bonus was the F2 race right after. No idea who the drivers were but my friends were very excited about the V8 engines rather than the V6 Turbos lol. Met some really fun people and hit the casino later that night. Got to meet Terrell Suggs there.
The race sunday was amazing as well. They had a TV where I was but some of the nuances were hard to follow. I will rewatch when I get home of course. Fun time had by all. We were with a Mexican family that was there following Sergio Perez, it was a blast.
All in all I had a great time and it was supremely satisfying. I can't wait until my next GP, have the opportunity to drive up to Canada but I feel like by the time I wrap up this trip I will be totally unwilling to travel any more.
