Some random thoughts from the trailer & stream:

Going with geo characters as the 5 star on their character banner twice in a row is an odd choice. Albedo's gameplay doesn't look terribly interesting

Ganyu's skills look like they could be cool, especially since we're getting a proper cryo artifact set. Her charged shot doing AOE damage is a good way to make a bow user more useful. The size of the ice field on her skill/burst(?) was massive.

Looks like we're also getting a hydro artifact set as well.

I didn't watch the whole stream, just skipped around, but they showed Rosaria (ice nun with polearm), but I didn't see any gameplay.

I'm kinda torn on which banner to pull. I could use another cryo character electro debuff on those ice domains (I have Chongyun at Lvl 70, but I didn't like Kaeya or Diona enough to build them up). Rosaria looks cool, but not feeling Albedo. Or wait for Ganyu, but probably not pull her and end up with another pyro spear. I guess I should wait to see what the other 4 star rate-up characters are for each banner before deciding.

Man those are a ton of events announced. Finally some much needed content, hope it's not all resin-gated. Albedo is such an easy pass for me, I don't even know or care what his kit is, but his boring as fuck moveset and softboi look just yell "nah" for me. Plus I'm good with my current stable of Geo characters until there's something truly unique released.

Nice looks like there's Cryoculus in the trailer at 2:40? More stamina hopefully.

Yeah I feel the same about Albedo. Still going to pull for Bennet if he's on the banner though. Hopefully I don't pull Albedo.

Just catching up on the Stream now, both new 5* kits are....pretty bad. I'm pulling for cocogoat no matter what, but she literally is Ice Amber mixed with Diona Burst (minus the heals) and with Mona's Taunt. Hope her numbers are sufficiently high to make up for a really boring kit. The 2 level charge is a neat idea but it takes fucking forever in the trailer for her to charge it. How much do you want to bet one of her constellations magically "fixes" this problem? That slow motion butt shot in her character spotlight though, lol.

Albedo's kit frankly looks like somebody said "you can copy my homework but change it a little" from the Geo main character kit. I don't know why anybody would be excited about that character. I'm guessing we're going to see the lowest banner numbers yet on him unless there's something amazing that he does that doesn't translate through the video.

It's also weird because the male MC and Albedo look so similar in their design. If I hadn't played the game & you told me they were related, I would believe it.

I agree, they're going to need a strong 4 star presence to get people to pull on Albedo's banner.

Edit: Now I'm hearing that there's no 4 stars on Albedo's banner. Why would they do that?

A couple of the stream reviews mention it.

At around 2:10 in this video.

Maybe this is why we haven't seen leaked banner art yet.

ahh, honestly hopefully for me, i dont want Albedo and im about 30 wishes from 5* pity with over 7k gems saved. id rather just save em till Ganyu. i really want a decent ice melee waifu, so im gonna want Rosaria too.

After thinking about it, I don't have a pressing need for new characters at the moment and probably wasn't going to pull much on Albedo's banner anyway. There's a lot of content in the 1.2 update; some free weapons and the potential for getting cryo artifacts is more useful than needing to level up a new character.

yeps... i stretched myself way too thin and have some decent characters on the bench at level 1 and my weapons and artifacts are shitty now at WL6. but resin holding me back... but ya there is plenty to farm for what i have already.

fill out that survey, talk shit about Resin regen everyone.

Guess I was wrong after all about Albedo being a free event character. They're just going to add him as a playable 5th character to a lot of the quests apparently. I'm really curious as to how they're not going to run any 4* rate ups on his banner though, that just sounds weird.

*edit*

I want to pull but I don't see anything I like in the upcoming banners for quite a while. I'm talking beyond 1.2, datamined characters don't appeal me in the slightest.
Hope they do a rerun of the banners or something (gimme Diluc ffs!) before I get bored with the game.

Oh lame, so I just read some "rumors". Looks like Rosario and Hu Tao (the funeral director girl) aren't going to be in 1.2 at all, playable at least. Also apparently we're going to see our first rerun banners in April of 2021, with Venti. Should have plenty of time to max out my current character roster I guess, but boy that seems like a mistake from a revenue angle. Of course, I guess this game has made so much money already they're probably set for a while. Hopefully these are false.

Maybe they introduce cosmetics late winter/early spring to compensate for the lack of characters/banners?

I find these "gacha" games to be despicable in practice.

Honest question to those that play them, with so many great games out there...why settle on FTP games with questionable monetary mechanics? Is it a matter of your economic situation (low income, unemployed, etc) or some sort of predisposition to "grindy" mechanics? Is it something else completely? I honestly wish to know.

Edit: Some background. I'm near my 40's and have been playing videogames for roughly 35 years. This idea is relatively new to me with the closest examples being shareware games from the 90's that were absolutely generous monetary wise when compared to these kind of games.

This game is fun to play without spending money, that's why it's popular.

Not every FTP game is the same or has the same gacha mechanics.

I play for story and constant stream of new content. I mean if you love the formula, why stop playing it? Same shit with overwatch. I have all skins and never spend a single dollar.

Genshin Impact has a better battle system than Witcher 3 for example. Yeah, I know, w3 is a tremendously better game, all I'm saying is that GI battle system is competent and fluid enough to be enjoyable.

Besides, the most popular games out there like CoD / GTA / Fortnite / Destiny / Fifa is already succumbed to the same practices of content drip feeding and time gated progression. Unfortunately it's the new norm.

Look at the Cyberpunk. So many years of development, so many controversies and marketing hype. On release cyberpunk broke several sales records and in the end it will never make as much money as Genshin.

It's a sad state of affairs, I agree, but what can we do? Apparently people are happy with a bare minimum and willing to spend their time and money in the virtual casino.

I have high hopes for the new Battlefield (modern day please), Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. All these games are probably gonna have similar systems to GI / CoD. There is too much money involved :(

I understand where you're coming from. I would say 95% of the games that i play are indie games where it is incredibly rare to see any monetization. I suppose that makes me an outlier in respect to our hobby these days. Thanks

Speaking of the story. Fatui is so cartoonishly evil and we are so cartoonishly good, that I hope, that in the end we are gonna uncover some very unpleasant truth.

I mean the old world ended with a genocide and what we are doing most of the time? Laying waste on harmless orcs who just dance around you and speak on the foreign language xD

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it and GI really is just a simple kids friendly fairytale without any grey area...

Ahah I basically said the same things at the beginning of the thread, and look where I am now.
Truth is, even though I mostly detest its character design, it's a really good game mechanically. Exploration is fantastic and combat is pretty fun. Production values are high and it's very enjoyable.
Now, people are saying that it's enjoyable "without spending money", and I don't fully agree with that. I wanted a particular character that I did not get after 100 pulls or so and this kinda demolish my potential fun factor. Thank god I pulled another I quite like (Razor), but if I think to play without him and with the free characters or pull only some stupid waifus, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the game at all.
Here's the best tip you can have about starting to play this game, if you're interested: buy an account with the 5★ character(s) you like. They can be quite cheap, and better to give money to those people than mihoyo. I regret not having done it, but I just thought about it when I was already way too invested in my main account (90+% exploration and AR40).

This is just a predisposition and personal bias preventing you from enjoying something on principle. Nothing wrong with that, we all do it for certain things I'm sure. If you want to see for yourself why people play it, give it a shot, it's a free game after all. If you still think it's beneath you or whatever after trying it, at least you'd then know. The backhanded insult that people that play Genshin are poor is also hilariously misled.

I understand. I didnt mean to insult anyone with my comment, I was simply typing reasons why I would play a game like this; they were poor assumptions I admit.

Yes, I confess I am bias towards games that fall under the "gacha" banner. From my expiriance, most of these games are purposly designed or contain mechanics that are meant to frustrate a player into paying for items, etc that make the game enjoyable in a way that it should have been to begin with.

Again, my view of video games may be a tad old fashioned. When it comes to principle, my fight is more against paid videogames with microtransactions...an abhorrent pracrice and one I'm glad I have not participated in for the time being.

With that said, I'll give it a spin on my Switch when it releases just for you.

I must confess and I really can't believe I saying that, but the livestream was actually pretty funny. Those voice actors really did an amazing job getting into their characters and I love it. Shame most of those modern games don't embrace that.

Well if that's true and Rosaria isn't coming then that means I can keep increasing my F2P wishes. Which is sitting at 50 right now.

Pulling for 5 star characters is a big no no to me.
5*s aren't that unattainable if you game the pity system a bit, though there's always a chance for failure with that too. If no Rosario, the Albedo banner will be the first one I skip entirely and not even throw the free wishes on.

I have an Amos Bow that I've been using on my Fischl, but after looking at it today, I think it'd make the perfect bow for Ganyu. Here's hoping I don't hate her playstyle too much. Using Childe out of cooldown on his melee has made me appreciate bow characters a bit more lately, so I could see myself digging it as long as she's got the damage to make it worthwhile. It definitely helps to have a bow user in every party to take care of annoying remote enemies and to get your first headshot on a big enemy to start a fight.

Ganyu looks good out of the gate for AoE damage which I imagine will be good. Unless passives are great on Albedo I only see him for jump attacks.

I typically avoid the 5 stars because they either require constellations and pulling the 5* you want is ridiculous and most of them I just don't care about.

Only 5 star I have my eye on is Jean. Because her kit is so fun. The rest are just boring to me.

If Poptart boy had his Devil Trigger mode I'd probably change my mind about him but he's really all about stacking Hydro damage and I like my physical DMG and Tank builds.

Thus far the only 5 star unit I use prominently is Aether/Lumine.

With the the Albedo banner news, I decided to check how many wishes I had on the permanent banner. Turns out I was about 20 wishes from the pity (pulled on it early before really understanding why that wasn't a great idea) , so why not go for it. Ended up with Mona on my first 10 wish pull.

I'm not really in great resource shape to level her up, so hopefully this 1.2 content comes with events with opportunities for EXP books.
