Ghost of Tsushima - Review Thread

Excellent take. It's rare that a new IP ever comes out without flaws, but a strong initial showing generally points to future titles ironing out the flaws.
Does every new IP needs to be franchise? Can it just be one-and-done? I really wish this industry would operate more like that.

It's their choice - I never said it wasn't. That does not mean the difficulty doesn't leave a lot of gamers out, specially young and casuals. In the end it's their loss ($$$).

They're leaving a lot on the table in my opinion. A lot of gamers won't touch the games or give up not even past the first couple bosses. They want to live off the hardcore only? Let that be their wish - and hopefully pray the hardcore doesn't get bored of the formula. They should take note from Sony Santa Monica with God of War if it's anything but an example on how you can make a game's combat easy to pick up and challenging at the same time without losing the addiction aspect. Then again that game is superior to any Souls game ever made on a variety of fronts. I will still buy them day one but it's what it's.

Not really sure why we're discussing From in Got reviews but they did add a lot of quality of life improvement to their games like gameplay hints, more frequent checkpoints, sekiro for instance outright tells you the firecracker attachment startles animal right after or just before you fight gyubo. I have never been good enough (or had the patience) to beat From games but sekiro and ds3 were very manageable. They don't need an easy mode.

I take it this game is not nearly as difficult as Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, right? That game was DIFFICULT AS FUCK

No it isn't. For one, that's not exactly how he couched it and secondly, this whole push for realism is destroying fun gameplay elements. To have a truly great stealth game, reality is NOT something to pursue. In reality, stealthing a whole encampment by yourself would be impossible, so the further they move towards realism, the further from what stealth players want. If we continue down this path ALL games will just end up being pew-pew brain dead crap.
True
This dude is correct

There’s this false narrative out there that gamers demand more realism in games. But nobody really wants that.

Subtitles, bullet time, slow motion, split screen, fast travel, people flying with capes, slinging webs, dying and coming back to life, respawning, zombies, magic spells, crafting bombs on the spot ...etc are not things that happen in real life.
They’re literally the stuff of kid’s comic books.

if people wanted realism, your character would have to take urine and shit breaks. Eat food 2 to 3 times a day. Go to sleep. Do his taxes. Go to the laundromat. go to the doctors. Take a shower. And do NONE of what I typed above ^

If anything, it seems like the game might be too easy. I've seen several reviews complain about it how it's nearly impossible to die, especially later in the game.

Not that I put too much stock on reviews these days, but after the debacle of TLOU2, it's tough to have much confidence in reviews these days. Sounds like a good game, I'll pick up when I can.

TLOU2 is way too divisive. I imagine it'd be hard for people to really hate GoT in the same manner. GoT will be a far nicer reminder of the system, although frankly both are always going to be overshadowed by stuff like Bloodborne.

True, but it also took so much of the mindshare that I can see Ghost being overshadowed.

Paper Mario looks a bit disappointing, so I guess it makes my decision easier. I'll pick Ghost up on Friday and get Origami King later on.

Barboun is not exactly like beer but okay.

I thought your response to me asking what is bloodbourn (deliberately misspelled) was sarcastic. So I thought we were playing a game.

While Barboun is not my first choice (since its not scotch), I do appreciate it. Sometimes.

Did they remove the bow kill animation? Every review I’ve seen has people drop down like you’d expect, I haven’t seen the „flying back“ animation in any review.

I'm surprised at how good the combat looks. Why did those leaked videos make it look so shit?

The mysteries of the internet abound! Seems like all people who leak footage are just absolutely abhorrent at said game they’re leaking...it’s like an unwritten rule; you can only obtain a game early and leak footage if you suck at playing it.

I think the combat certainly has way more depth and Nuance to it than previously thought. It seems like it strikes a good balance between something like Nioh and Assassin’s Creed; something between skill and spectacle.

For those looking into the analyze, already out.

So pretty world but not the best looking PlayStation game due to drawbacks in camera, animation, and texture.

Excited to play this on my new monitor!

When do we think Sony will talk about ps5 enhancements for this and TLOU2?!

Would love to buy this now but my PS4 Pro is too noisy. Will wait to buy/play week 1 of PS5 launch along with TLOU2.
Pretty epic launch title if you ask me. The ps4 didn't have this luxery at launch. Hell TLOU didn't get ported until a year after launch. This console is going to do good.

Probably soon if you watch the video. Sony will focus on the lastest PS4 games release, so problably from this year will already be tested on the dev kit for ensure no problem.
Last of Us part 2, Ghost of Tsushima and FF7R.

I still can't understand how Sony green lit this. It's nice to see it review well, and Sucker Punch are a great studio, but now what? 5 years of development for a Samurai open world game that won't make it to top 3 goty, and has no clear path forward as a franchise.

You seem a little confusing about what gaming should be about and their porpuse. Spider-man don't get a GOTY as well, but is a hell of game.
Try to detach from metacritic. Will make wonders.

Not thinking about metacritic, but impact. Spiderman had a huge impact and was what I describe as a Top 3 GOTY.

Ghosts is making less waves, there's less interest, reviewers are boasting less about it. It will sell less too. On top of it it's not really bringing forth a new paradigm for the open world genre, nor doing anything particularly new with it.

And then I think about the future. The game took 5 years to make and there's no clear path for a franchise.

Man if we were to go by those standards, assassins creed should’ve died a long time ago lol. Sucker punch is a much smaller studio, so expecting something insanely massive is a bit ridiculous. How can you be so certain it has no clear path as a franchise? I mean Jin Sakai’s story might be done, nothing is stopping them from making “Ghost of Tokyo” or “Ghost of Kyoto” if the game does well

Assassins Creed is one of the biggest franchises there is, and the pitch for infinite sequels was there from the first game.

I have a really hard time seeing the hook for a franchise behind GoT pitch.

Let me just give you that. Imagine creating a new IP thinking about that.

Idk about that bro. The samurai era began around the time this game takes place. So they are still in their infancy, they could totally make more open world samurai game with kickass combat that focuses on other parts of Japan. Of course we don’t know how the game ends unless you’ve played it already.

What's this, creating a new IP? What is the context in which this is framed? When a film studio makes an original picture does anybody refer to it as "new IP"?

I think the term "IP" is used a lot in videogames because most of them are expected to have room for sequels. If the idea with GoT was to make a classic, well only time will tell but it seems like they failed.

That is true. We must wait and see what Sucker Punch next project is.

No it's still there, i saw some footage when enemies still flying in that ridiculous way, you just have to use the long bow and not the normal bow.

Sony doesn't give a shit about metacritic or goty from supposed internet journalist, they only care about how much the game sell and tsushima is probably gonna sold very well.

Also the game is not historically accurate, they can do whatever they want, even jin traveling to japan to battle with mongols on a larger scale and call the game ghost of tokyo or japan.

Lol we don't even know if the story in tsushima island is conclusive or not, we didn't played the game yet...

That’s usually the case with all of these power fantasy games, especially if you’re one of those OCD types that knock out all surrounding ?’s in an area before proceeding with the main quests. It’s nothing new and I love playing these checkbox games like that.

Although I’ve heard you should complete two major quests early on before anything else since they grant you the ability to assassinate from behind and give you the bow.

You know what would be crazy? A difficulty mode on which the playable character can incur permanent injuries due to sword dueling, such as the amputation of a hand or the striking out of an eye. Losing one hand or one eye would result in a naturally more difficult but still beatable campaign, whereas losing a foot or both hands or both eyes would be game over automatically.

Glad you understand. Unless you have a time travel machine, we can't be sure if the new IP will be sucess or not. And if you think a 84 game is a fail, I have bad news for you.

So basically ARMA: Samurai Edition?
