GoT S4 is really losing me.

Seasons 4 and 5 drag because of Khaleesi's plot inching forward at a snail's pace, and I found Arya's plot
in Braavos
dull, even though that arc does have a satisfying conclusion when she
pays Walder Frey a visit
.

The battle for the wall is great though, and I really enjoyed all of Jon Snow's stuff
with the Wildlings
in seasons 5 and 6. Again, they've sat on their hands with that plot for ages, so thank fuck that plot is finally moving forward.

EDIT - they could definitely eject Samwell and Gilly and save some time. I'm guessing they're focusing more and more on him because he's going to learn something crucial to defeating the White Walkers.

Full spoilers of course and yes I know what happens after season 6 ended. I spoiled myself intentionally since the internet is a landmine of GoT spoilers anyway.

After binge watching Seasons 1 to 3, season 4 is just losing me. Joffrey is a goner and he's was intensely entertaining. I haven't taken to Jon Snow at all. He's a boring pretty boy and I can see the direction going more and more to him, at least I've heard lol. And Khalessi just isn't that compelling of a character.

Does it get better? But the quality drop is palpable. Very strange.

But I'm forcing myself to go through this season.

Season 4 is the last good one. Season 5 is godawful and season 6 manages to be worse.

I wonder if people's renewed hope in Season 6 isn't just a side effect of having new content to chew on that is genuinely exciting and long awaited. Still, I think the show has been dealt irrevocable damage by the time constraints (7.5 seasons + 10 episodes per season) that force D&D to sacrifice important developments and well-written stories to get to the big juicy moments that the general audience expects from the show.

Arya's storyline in season 6 is a perfect example. Without spoilers, the payoff of the storyline is essentially null, probably because D&D misjudged how much time they could devote to that story while completing the plot in the limited amount of time. Her last scene that season, especially, felt so forced and inexplicable, something that would've genuinely worked better if we hadn't spent so much time on her story the past couple seasons. That doesn't speak well for the direction of the show or the writing.

These factors also make certain scenes (Podrick's big dick, brother scene #699) so frustrating because they waste so much much needed time that could be used to better flesh out storyline that desperately need it. Storyline such as Sansa's and Jaime's in recent seasons were unfulfilling mostly due to the lack of time needed to flesh out their decisions and motivations.

Again, this show is still one of the best on television. But I feel like seasons 1 - 3 are legitimately some of the best television of all time, while 4 - 6 are just good[/I.

Yeah there was a bit of a drop in quality in S4 that continued through most of S5 (that Hardhome though), but S6 was top-tier GoT imo.

Stick with it, OP.

I agree that 5 is bad, but 6 was the best season in a long time. Got me interested in GoT again, probably because the plot actually advanced enough that it was memorable again.

I thought season 4 was great. There're some minor issues but it's leagues above season 2,3, and fucking 5. 5 was terrible.

6 was also pretty good, if you didn't think very much about what's happening and just enjoyed the ride.

S4 was ok. S5 however...christ. Previous lesser moments of GoT I'd usually say "that wasn't great, but still better than most things on TV", but season 5 is legitimately bad even from a broader perspective.

That's my opinion too, don't really keep up with GoT fandom so I'm quite shocked that season 6 is so lauded, in contrast to season 5, the highs may be a little higher but the lows were way, way lower.

The only thing I remember thinking after watching the craptacular season 5 was, why the fuck was Stannis in this show for so long and yet had no point. Season 5 was a waste of time. And if the next season feels rushed I'll be pissed

The biggest sin of the show is trying to make the most boring character at their disposal such a focal point. Dany is a dreadfully dull character whose arc was basically over by the second season and has been now been sitting around doing fuck all for a dozen hours of screen time. At least she gets paired with
Tyrion and Varys
in Season 5 so that I can make it through her scenes without dozing off, but it's still dreadful. They really should have introduced her in like season 4 or 5 and skipped the whole Slaver's Bay CSPAN arc that lasts for several seasons.

Jon isn't much more interesting, but at least he's always surrounded by interesting characters.

Season 5 is the worst season, but Season 6 is the best, so stick with it OP. At least Season 5 has Hardhome in it though, so it's not a total write-off.

Season 6 is lauded for three episodes really: The Door, BotB and the final episode. The rest was pretty mediocre (or straight up bad
that Arya chase scene, oh boy
).

Man if you don't like S4 (<3 Oberyn), prepare to hate S5. S6 is mostly a return to form, but S5 is just... ugh. I nearly quit the show entirely after that season. Glad I didn't though.
