GoT S4 is really losing me.

See, I took a LONG hiatus between watching S4 and S5. I was a bit fatigued after S4.

People have few good things to say about S5 but after the first episode I was very much "back in it." So I ended up enjoying that season more than most.

That said the peaks were in S1 and S3.

"The show I spoiled for myself is boring because I know what happens"

Not rocket science, OP. I didn't watch GoT until this year and managed to remain unspoiled. If you don't want something to be uninteresting, don't spoil it for yourself.

GoT is hardly above criticism, but I have to point out...

You deliberately spoiled the show for yourself, that verb was appropriated for this modern act for a reason. Naturally you're now piecing things together based on what you know will come later.

That's not the way the plot is meant to be consumed. The mystery, suspense and surprise have been diminished, and in a show that subverts expectations with character deaths and plot left turns this is not insignificant.

That could be part of it, I don't why you'd seek to maximise the spoiler effect...

Personally: Sansa's (unnecesary, IMHO) storyline and what they did to Dorne. Seriously, there's barely any redeeming thing about Dorne in the show. A complete waste of time and talent.

Meereen wasn't very good either, but that's a problem directly from the books.

And of magnific locations. The Alcazar of Seville (
the Water Gardens in the show
) is a wonderful place and kinda wished they could have gotten something better out of it.

Also yeah why tf would you do that OP

I didn't read any detailed synopsis. I just know of big events. I don't know how they happen or their motivations.

I honestly could not avoid it. Google auto filed a whole bunch stuff and Twitter did the rest.

For example, The Red Wedding was a total surprise luckily. But I know that Dany and Cersei gain power in Season 6. And Sansa getting raped obviously. I don't know by whom and why though.

That's really it and I know of other that die, but I don't know how.

O_o Like I said, I just watched it this year for the first time and didn't have a single thing spoiled. I wasn't even actively trying to avoid spoilers. If you follow people on twitter that just spoil everything maybe think about unfollowing that person.

Don't blame the show. The show is fantastic. It's not the shows fault, it's yours.

And then BotB, goddamn.

Eh, it's not a big deal for me.

You don't like Jon Snow?

I can understand finding Khaleesi insufferable, but to not like Snow either must not be so enjoyable

His storyline is at least realy good and the stuff with the wall is awesome. So I think you'll come around

Kinda of a bore. The whole divided loyalty thing was interesting, but you always knew he was loyal to the Crows, so there was no real conflict or intrigue there.

Show only got progressively worse after season 1

Season 2 shits on season 1 and season 3 shits on season 2

Unless you're one of the book dweebs, then I could see how you'd think s1 is the best. A Storm of Swords is the best thing in the ASOIAF/GoT universe.

And then BotB, goddamn.

Actually Hardhome is followed by
Daenerys XDXDXD again then the butchering of the Stannis character.
Fuck season 5

Season 4 had some of the best moments in the series.

The chicken scene, Oberyn's head popping like a grape, The Hound vs Brienne, Tywin dying in the can.

I can see how it might be lackluster if you already spoiled yourself, but season 4 is top-tier.

I feel GoT has been amazing throughout. Season 5 is the only anomaly, but I didn't think it was as horrible as people were saying either. If you're annoyed enough to make an entire thread about season 4 losing you then I'd say drop the show at this point.

Yeah I never get this.

The show has ups and down, as do all shows, but I never found the show to be unwatchable. Even at its worst its an amazing show but some people make it sound like its the worst thing on tv and have to quit the show.

snow's story is pretty much the only good thing about season 5

he pretty much carries the season (and that book)

i say that as someone who didn't like him very much in the earlier books/seasons

Season 4 was awesome. I'm about halfway through Season 6, but I think 4 is just as good as 3.

The show is no longer burdened by the rob stark subplot, John snow becomes more interesting finally. You have tytells being great. Jamie has some great moments.

And the arya plot was fun.

Season 5 is complete hot garbage with the exception of Hardhome. It's like the showrunners even realized it was largely pointless given how Season 6 starts out. Season 6 was solid though, even if its largely because stuff starts happening at a rapid clip compared to the languid pace of the books.

.. because you spoiled yourself. Seriously you can't shit on a show for being boring when you know what it's leading to.

I don't know what happens with Jon Snow at all.

The extent of me spoiling myself was seeing some Tweets and shrugging them off and going on my business. I didn't read detailed plot synopsis and character sketches.

I just don't care about spoilers in general. People can post spoilers. I don't care. If you have good writing, characters, etc., spoiling should not make a huge difference.

I thought season 4 was great with Tyrion's speech and a fairly major death each episode after ep 6. It's probably my favourite.

You could make the argument that he is Game of Thrones Best Director based on his episodes.

he pretty' much is, IMHO. Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter? Top 5 material right there. Seriously, his work on the last 2 episodes of S6 was so good it pretty much elevated whatever material they had there.
and made me sad he wasn't coming back for S7. Here's hoping he handles the last couple of episodes of the entire series.

So was Ramin Djawadi's, by the way. Light of the Seven is definitely one of the best things he's done.

EDIT: fucked up, removed part of my post.

I stopped at season 4 too op. It was mostly due to me realizing how the show was taking more different directions than the books.

Full spoilers of course and yes I know what happens after season 6 ended. I spoiled myself intentionally since the internet is a landmine of GoT spoilers anyway.

After binge watching Seasons 1 to 3, season 4 is just losing me. Joffrey is a goner and he's was intensely entertaining. I haven't taken to Jon Snow at all. He's a boring pretty boy and I can see the direction going more and more to him, at least I've heard lol. And Khalessi just isn't that compelling of a character.

Does it get better? But the quality drop is palpable. Very strange.

But I'm forcing myself to go through this season.

Season 5 is much worse - it's just terrible all-round. Season 6 is much much better though.

S6E9, S6E10 and S4E10 are my favorite episodes. I love the Hound fight so much.

Skip Dany scenes, maybe fast forward through Jon Snow scenes. That's the only way I was able to re-watch the series.

I had a similar experience. Season 1 to 3 were really good, highly enjoyed them. Then after Season 4 I started to lose interest and just watched it to see what happened, or if I started enjoying them again.
It never picked up again for me, will probably watch S7 out of curiosity... maybe. It's a franchise that you want to know how it ends, I still haven't watched Harry Potter E7, one day.

Whether the books or the show, I think the story loses steam following The Red Wedding. It's a turning point for the series and if The Winds of Winter delivers on the growth the Red Wedding requires certain characters to go through (like
Sansa no longer having Robb or her mother fighting to save her
) then perhaps the story can get back how good it was from seasons 1-3 and books 1-3. If that doesn't happen though, then I think seasons 1-3 will kind of be viewed as the highlight of this series

Season 6 was a major improvement over season 5, but I wonder if the final two seasons will reach the highs of 1-3. Being unpredictable by killing so many characters comes at a cost. After a certain point, there are so few original characters and so many of the characters during the best stuff are now gone, and that eventually puts you in a spot where the story feels inferior. Like, so many fan favorite characters are gone. The
War of the 5 Kings
story arc is over and it's questionable if the major arc after that is as good as that one.

Skip Dany scenes, maybe fast forward through Jon Snow scenes. That's the only way I was able to re-watch the series.

Jon is boring to me until season 4. I think his story picks up a lot. His POV in A Dance With Dragons is my favorite story line in that book

Seaaon 4 had its ups and downs but season 5 felt like it was going nowhere and was deliberately delaying most characters progress.

S4 is the point Game of Thrones decides to be dumb show for the masses, in a way its a guilty pleasure of mine as the season capitalizes on the on the "big" moments the show is known for, but its the point of no return as the writing gets worse and worse.

I often wonder where the story could have gone if The Red Wedding never happened. Or if enough key characters escaped to keep the Stark cause going and lived to fight on and explain the betrayal that happened to the world

Because ending the Stark's control of The North to prop up (season 4&5 spoilers)
Stannis to be the savior of the North to only squander that with what eventually happened to him
feels like such a waste

It also had one of the worst sequences in the entire show

This is the scene where I was like "OK, so Ramsay Bolton is The Joker?"

Imagine if he fought Battle of the Bastards shirtless, ez win 4 bolton.

All it takes is 20 good men and a few dogs to ruin an empire in D&D's world.

Only if you're against Stannis. D&D hate my dude so much they literally did everything in their power to make Stannis suck. And he's still the best character on the show.

i agree with all of this, and i would tell you to give Black Sails a shot instead. it succeeds in all the ways Game of Thrones fails for me - a consistently great cast, good dialogue, characters that are consistent and don't make uncharacteristically stupid decisions purely to manufacture drama and shock value, exceptionally good plotting + plot twists that are genuinely surprising and exciting, are not just a repeated series of shocking and depressing deaths, and always feel well earned due to entire seasons worth of subtle development. also, the musical score by Bear McCreary is probably the best anywhere on television right now

unlike GoT, it legitimately feels like it could hang with HBO's previous period pieces - Deadwood and Rome in particular. even shares some thematic similarities with the former, though it goes in a completely opposite direction with them.

As others have said, all the future season (including 4) have very strong later halfs, but if you're not feeling the character yet then you might not like the rest of the series? A lot of the best moments for the future come from the character's you're not liking.
