The Airship balloon is out too, incredibly silly that it's priced 500 gems when the cool toys (Magic Carpet, Drilling tool) are half as expensive and twice as much fun. What an odd decision, it's like the gem store team just sort of does whatever...

They need some standardized prices.

Not pink enough for F Team Commander

F Team Commander is... special.

Got Log-r-tron this morning. I had been waiting for this one so it was a no-brainer :D And yeah, gotta get the matching other ones too. Have actually been pondering a third set of tools for a while (Living Story character, the one character with world completion and current leveling character need to have one set each!) so this was perfect.

I kinda hope the story leads to dragon egg hatching, giving birth to a friendly dragon who goes on to take Zhaitan's place, allowing the dragons to exist peacefully and not harm life.

Just so we can move on to the real enemy who has been gaining forces and will take over the Risen to conquer us all...

Anyone else feel the story desperately needs named villains? Like, maybe a face for the Inquest? Instead we just get them thrown in as enemies but I feel like it's lifeless. Just saying "here are some Inquest, fight them" is hollow, especially after the events in Sorrow's Embrace and Crucible of Eternity. Someone has to be leading them and the other enemies that haven't gone away. Maybe a general or something? Give us an Asura with a commander tag over his head.

Y'mean like the ghetto harley queen that just died?

Asura just aren't threatening, btw. Doubt they'd be able to get an asura voice actor that could sound threatening/commanding without sounding silly, and then there's the problem of Asura animations and the like.

Ghetto Harley was overdone. "We're all looking for a Sylvari for a year! A talking plant, yes!" But at least she had named lackeys like Mai Trin.

They should just bring in the guy who voiced the Brain from Pinky & The Brain again. He can pull off the menacing and intellectual without sounding like a stuffed doll that has come to life like all other Asura do.

I would definitely like to explore the Inquest more. I feel like they're saving them for Season 6, when we go after the Deep Sea Dragon.

That guy was the original Asura. Maybe Vekk froze himself in a status chamber or something though.

Ha. For whatever reason I just finally checked out Lump's tag. I just never happened to get into Mass Effect so everything was over my head, but holy god do I recognize Omega-level bad writing when I see it. What vileness ever led to that man's work being printed in ink upon paper is beyond me, but damn if Lump's comic didn't make it all worthwhile. I love this quote from our own Kanik
I'm not even joking. Seeing that excerpt makes me want to become a professional writer.
me too buddy, me too.

I'm actually a little surprised that "The weapon had been a toothbrush" was never elevated to a full-fledged meme. Just... what a sentence. The weapon had been a toothbrush.

Hobar was my 'favorite' part of that book. I was really hoping he'd make it into ME3 somehow.

Kristen Schaal would make a wonderful asura villain

Y'know, they'd probably be better off hiring her and whoever writes that thing, then having them go ham+comedy (with the occasional interspersed bit of horrendous cruelty), than trying to write a serious story.

Would be better than the "emotional" moments we got. Belinda's death and the sailor moon sword power up were absolutely pathetic.

Anet inside the game sure does seem to have an easier time with comedy than pathos, anyway.

Wait. What?

Coriolanus has the best reaction images.

That said, I miss the Glee "wait what" on this page.

Oh....

That Edge of the Mist even comes up in the discussion period is the joke, regardless of the "but" tacked on at the end. It's like having someone describe how hungry they are for a delicious meal they've been anticipating all week and suggesting they just get McDonalds instead because it's faster.

Hey, didn't mean to start shit with this, but its something I'll keep in mind., Sometimes I just wanna see my xp bar go up faster so these 'leveling shortcuts'or whatever you want to call them, aren't beyond me. Gotta get that Maccas once in a while. Not sure i'd use something like that to go all the way from 1-80 though same way as I wouldn't want to live off Maccas everyday

So with that in mind, in a nutsell whats involved with Edge of the mist? A quick bit of googling indicates its a WvW map. Reasons to go there, I guess is faster leveling but why does it seem to be such a prickly point? Or is that further opening a can of worms?

Paired up with Annylin (I think. At work can't check) from the guild last night, who took me to a hidden base populated by Ninja Pirates (!!) in the Grendalen fields (i think). Place was chock full of some bastard-ass jumping puzzles which I then proceeded to fall down every possible gap (and I think some impossible ones too). Lucky for me he obviously knew the place inside out, and as a Mesmer, was just able to portal me out of everywhere. Got some sweet loot at the end too. If you're reading though, thanks for your patience, that was some of the most uncoordinated platforming I've done in my life. Was funny though.

Def jump back on later. This time though I mite try to fight and kill things instead of falling of narrow platforms all night....

Nah, it was more my misunderstanding Corio's comment; I thought he was being funny and I guess he wasn't. You're good.

It's supposed to be a WvW-style map, but has turned into a (relatively) safe, easy, boring way to power level. Players form into large groups and avoid the other enemy groups, instead flipping objectives in each others' wake to maximize XP / Karma gain. It's a mind-numbingly boring grind and probably the worst way to experience what the game has to offer. Since you're enjoying the leveling experience and exploring, it would basically sap the joy out of the game for you.

It will get you to 80 quick, but the last three OTs are littered with the inactive accounts of those who treated Guild Wars 2 like every other generic Traditional MMO and rushed to max level, only to find they had skipped over the good parts. You're playing it how it's meant to be played, so enjoy the journey and smell the roses. This isn't the kind of game where you're going to fall behind or anything like that.

The tools are expensive :(

Also I didn't get any prize :(

Wait, Cloth Rack? As in... harvestable fabric? O:

Rune of the Aristocracy is near unmatched for melee condi.
120 CM badges a pop, tho.

Can also just go with rune of the thief. Cheap as dirt and probably a dps increase if you solo a lot or dont have a sigil of strength on your wep.

Hmm, sigil of force is probably still better than sigil of bursting. Can stack both. Would be more interesting if you were in sinister, tho.

Yeah I've been thinking about Rune of Strength since I crit a lot, still...

Check out Runes of the Krait if you're talking pvp/wvw. It's based around condition damage and bleed duration, and the 6th ability is an AoE bleed/poison/torment on elite skill, for which thief has short cooldowns.
For everything. I completely blanked and forgot that a condi thief's bread and butter aint dagger poisonbleeds, but pistol dagger. If you're running bleeds solo, yeah, krait will be great.

Yeah I use pistol/dagger, though I am tempted for pistol/pistol.

Agree on the point of grinding out power levels and sapping all the fun out. I'm the sort of guy who will stop playing if I'm not enjoying it, and not just keep going through obligation or whatever. My backlog of last gen ps3 and 360 titles that are 1/2 - 3/4 finished is testament to that. I can think of three games ever where I got my grind on for x amount of hours to obtain some in game reward, and boy did I feel dirty afterwards.

So far the driving force for me in GW2 has been exploring the world. Its friggin immense with so many cool things to see (who knew there was a secret Ninja Pirate base tucked away) and I've only opened about 10% of the map. I just wandered into the snowy area for the first time last night too. I will play this game for as long as it takes to see (most) everything and then I need to muck around with some of the other classes and get them leveled (want a mesmer now to trivialize jumping puzzles)oh and then there's 'endgame' living story stuff which I can't wait to get into. So yeah point being, all going well hopefully I'll stick around for an OT or three.

Re your point on not missing out on anything I guess I feel like I sort of am, given how the living story evolves and only seems to be a level 80 thing. I understand the season 2 content will be re-playable, but isn't it one of those things that you kind of 'have to be there for' to get the most out of it?

That's the normal, healthy way to approach it, by treating it like any other videogame. It just happens to run counter to the absurd "second job" mentality that Traditional MMOs induce. With the way gear works, there's no treadmill you have to stay on to keep up with your friends. Get your level 80 exotics and you're done, though you can do content with masterwork and rare quality without too much trouble. After that, you can take a break for months or even years (we've had people come back who haven't played since launch pick up right where they left off). I'd log in for each episode though, so at least you have it for free when you come back.

I've been playing since the first Beta Weekend Event (April 2012) and pretty much weekly since launch. Eight 80s, two of which have 100% world completion. I still find something new on a fairly regular basis. Sometimes it's a cool little area I hadn't seen before (or hadn't noticed before), sometimes it's a new Dynamic Event, sometimes it's a conversation between NPCs.

If you're an exploration junkie, you'll be busy for a while.

Re your point on not missing out on anything I guess I feel like I sort of am, given how the living story evolves and only seems to be a level 80 thing. Yeah, there will always be the feverish excitement of experiencing something brand spanking new at the same time as everyone else (it makes dodging spoilers a hell of a lot easier), but the story parts are always replayable and the zones, though less active, aren't going anywhere. Probably, no promises they won't blow something up (Lion's Arch, Kessex Hills, etc.). With Mega Servers I don't think you'll ever find a zone completely abandoned. Even the zones people like to call dead are still at least a little active with farmers and such.

So yeah, I get that you want to be at the very edge of the Living Story (and it wasn't always like this, they used to scale people UP to 80 for each chapter), but it's not worth rushing through the rest of the game for, in my opinion. If you really, seriously have to have the best of both worlds, you could level a character to 80 quickly (hoping you don't burn out by the tedium power leveling kind of requires, of course) to do the Living Story stuff and then level an alt to play through the game for fun. I can't say I'd recommend it, it would kind of turn the game into work for me.

All tools are going to be 1000. Still debating if I want the back piece. Got a lot of skins already.

Necro is up next on my 'finish the storyline' trip. Messing with builds, zerk doesn't seem like the best of ideas with low mobility. Current Rabid set up might be slow too. Going to see if minions can do anything. It is a bit refreshing to consider things beyond dungeons/wvw.

Thank you Retro for the sagely advise. I do wanna check out WvW at some point, but want to do it when i get some better gears. I'll likely pop in and out of it a few times for some faster leveling in the next week or 2.

Re missing the events when they happen its sort of like a big live event on TV that you DVR and watch later. I guess you'll still experience it but it won't quite have the same level of excitement as watching and experiencing it live with everyone else. Not to mention spoiler issues (like with living story) become a concern.

I'll suck it up though and keep doing what i'm doing and hopefully have an 80 in a few weeks time, where i haven't missed too much. Then I only have to resist the urges of levleing Ele's, Rangers and Mesmers. Fuck it, Engineers with flame throwers are something I have to do as well

1 question (i have a ton, but you know, trying to space them out) re the random events. I think i read someone say they start to become more involved later on. Is that something that is strictly tied to the level of the zone? I know that you always scale to the level range of the zone, so is that to say as a scaled 80 you will see the same lot of events in a 15-25 area, as you would an unscaled 20? I guess what I'm getting at is, I've seen for the most part, the same few events in each area that i've spent a bit of time in. IE escort Ox guy or defend these guys from x amount of waves. These are ok, but then occasionally something alot cooler pops up like something massive spawns that seems to attract a tonne of players. To further elaborate on a lengthy question, is there any way to influence the events that spawn or, is it just a case of they get better in higher level zones? If so, how longs a piece of string? Oops, I mean roughly when could I expect some of the more interesting, multitiered random events to start happening on a regular basis? The other thing that makes me curious is I've read and heard from some obviously pretty experienced players (like Retro) that they still see new random stuff while running around.

Sorry that was a longer-then-intended question. Enough of that time, to log on and figure some of this shit out for myself

Events vary by area level, not player level. The thing is, you get scaled down to the level of the area, so you can't generally 1-shot everything like in most MMO low-level areas.

Do note that not all events are as easy as others, even within the same area. For example, the escorting a bull is pretty easy, but a little north of that event is nebo terrace, which has a stupidly hard event. YMMV.

Oh, regular old WvW (Eternal Battleground and the Borderlands) are generally a different story; whereas you can sometimes find a Karma Train running in them, that's not always the case like it is with Edge of the Mists (where that's generally the only thing happening). That's usually good fun, though with your play schedule (and the current lack of a tournament) it might be a little low key.

Re missing the events when they happen its sort of like a big live event on TV that you DVR and watch later. If you gather everything (plants, trees and ore), do events, kill mobs, explore, complete your personal story chapters, etc. then it'll be faster than a week. Once you hit 30 you can start doing dungeons as well, and completing a story path of those typically gives you a whole damn level.

Engineers with Flame Throwers are a big win in my book (that's currently how my main is spec'ed). Those other classes are great too. Hawkian describes the GW2 classes as being similar to the different characters in a fighting game, and it's a particularly apt comparison. Each plays so uniquely that even some that seem like they'd have overlap (Warriors and Guardians, for example) feel completely differently. Don't be shocked if you try one out and suddenly enjoy the game on a whole new level.

Don't worry about asking questions, how else will you learn stuff?

Yes, the events will always remain the same regardless of your level; if you're a Level 80 doing events in a Level 20 zone, you'll experience it the same way a level 20 would (though with more skills and stats, you'll be a bit beefier, though no where near as bad as other games where you steamroll everything). In the later zones you'll see more involved Dynamic Events, and event chains (where events will lead into each other), and eventually event webs where you have lots of events running into and over each other (usually under a zone or region-wide meta-event).

The main high level zones are on a continent known as Orr, and it's effectively the "Mordor" of Guild Wars 2 at this point. Without spoiling anything, it's where the first Elder Dragon resides and there's a whole military operation to attack him. There are no "heart" quests in Orr, just DEs, and they form a complex web that pushes and pulls, fighting for territory, establishing footholds, reinforcing them and pushing deeper into enemy land. For example, the main effort to retake the Temple of Balthazar is a three-pronged attack that occurs simultaneously; the northern route with submarines, the middle route with assault ships and the southern route running supplies. You can attempt to take the Temple with just one of those having succeeded, but by having all of them arrive you stand a MUCH better chance. A while ago GAF used to get together on the same map, divide into teams and get all three invasion forces through. Quite fun.

The newer zones they've added (Dry Top and The Silverwastes) are even more involved and have their own special kind of on-going events. Bodes well for future content to be even more dynamic in the future.

An early taste of the event web stuff is in Harathi Hinterlands where there's a constant push and pull between the humans and centaurs, taking camps, defending them, advancing into centaur territory, etc.. It's a level 35-45 zone, north of Gendarran Fields (which is north of Lion's Arch).

The other thing that makes me curious is I've read and heard from some obviously pretty experienced players (like Retro) that they still see new random stuff while running around.

Some stuff just isn't running when you're in an area, so it's easy to miss. You might run through an area that seems empty, only to come back later and find there's an event going on you hadn't seen before.

A few months ago, I saw a Dynamic Event I had never encountered where an Asura is asking you to bring him Harpy glands to create a pheromone-based perfume. It backfires horribly and the Harpies abduct him, and you've gotta go in, chase down the love-struck matriarch and get him back. All while he's making all sorts of colorful commentary.

Was it a new mechanic? Not really (though I don't see a lot of events where you need to chase down a fleeing enemy), but it was still something new and funny as hell that I missed on more than one character. There's stuff like that hiding everywhere. Not always events either but little easter eggs, hidden places, jumping puzzles, chests, little snippets of lore... There's rarely an area that doesn't have something going on.

Copper salvage-o-matic first. Then I would suggest bag slots, bank slots, hair style kits, and total makeover kits.

Cool thanks. Copper salvage-o-matic it is then. I'll hold hold off on the others until there is a sale. A general question for everyone in this thread: How much have you spent on the gem store? Just curious because after reading this thread, i feel like i'm the only one here who haven't' purchased anything.

Hmmm. Seems like it may go by a little quicker then I thought. I'm just short of 28 and the leveling seems to be getting a bit slower. The personal story seems like the best source of xp so far but I think they only roll around every 10 levels or so. Dungeons, as you say, seem like they'll be the way to go for best xp gains. They're designed for groups right?

Engineers with Flame Throwers are a big win in my book (that's currently how my main is spec'ed). Those other classes are great too. Heh. Hadn't even thought of engineers till I seen a few running round flame throwering everything last night. I HAVE to get me some of that.

Yup on the class variance thing too. Part of the reason why I think I'll probably be around a while. I briefly mentioned Marvel Heroes (currently 750 hours or so in the last 6 months) and that currently has 40 heroes, each essentially representing a different class. I've got about 30 of those unlocked with I think 22 fully leveled (but not fully geared) . Naturally with so may classes there's overlap but theres enough variance that each hero feels unique (obviously some more so then others). It's also majorly addicting trying out new heroes and they're playstyles, and if you're into the lore and know a bit about about the characters, as well as appreciating some ARPG in your MMO, its pure digital crack. About as good a F2P model as you will ever see too...

Tangent aside, and relating to GW2 I started out interested in about 3 classes. After having played a little now and seen the capabilities of some of the others, I reckon there's about 5 of the 8 that seem REALLY interesting, and the other 3 maybe I'll check out 1 day as well. I also feel like I'm missing out on a big part of the game if I don't at least TRY out the various classes and playstyles in these sorts of games. Some people like running around as the same character playing a gear refinement game for 100's of hours (and thats fine), while I prefer to try and play the goddam game in every way the developers made it to be played and then stick to whichever proves to be the best combination of fun/effective. In MMOS/RPGS/ARPGS where they're can be so much depth per class that can take a while.....

All of this. Thank you. Answers everything I was trying to ask. Its also all so mouth-wateringly good sounding. Event chains and webs especially. Can't wait

Yeah i've sort of noticed that with the world. Everything seems to have a purpose and be there for a reason. There's just so much of it too.

Don't worry about asking questions, how else will you learn stuff?

Heh. No probs. I'll work on asking shorter questions though. There will be crafting questions incoming soon, but I need to figure out some of the basics first. Then I'll ask the kind folk here to fill in the blanks

So is 800 gems worth it for those clothesline

Strictly in value, probably not. 800 gems is about 80 or 90 gold, which would buy a few thousand wool and cotton. It will take about a year of daily harvesting to get that. Its more of a convenience thing. I want all the nodes eventually, but I've been holding out for sales.

Playign Necro, can't help but miss some of the more unique mechanics they had in GW1. Wonder if any could be brought into GW2 without making dungeons even more stack-happy.

@lox769, I suggest following the NPCs you help during a dynamic event back to wherever they go after event ends. A lot of the times they just turn into a merchant that sells something unique but sometimes they go back talk to other NPCs and enable new dynamic events.

Also a lot of the times of you see a named NPC in the open world you should talk yo tgem because they could activate an event or give you information on what events are going on in the area.

Just a little suggestion since you like the exploring part of the game.

Yo cheers. Knew about the merchants after events I think. Are you talking about the ones after heart events that you can spend the purple currency on. Or are there vendors after random events too?

And now keeping a look out for named NPCs

A general question for everyone in this thread: How much have you spent on the gem store? Just curious because after reading this thread, i feel like i'm the only one here who haven't' purchased anything.
Way too much. Which my 46 character slots, 50-ish makeovers, all but one outfit, most store skins, a bunch of store minis and multiple sets of Royal Pass/Copper-Fed/Infinite Tools are proof of :p
And that's not even all of it. Ugh. :D

So is 800 gems worth it for those clothesline
Nah. A bad week could result in 21 jute scraps! You're not guaranteed to get all three tiers like with the ore.
I'll probably buy it on sale together with the other basic stuff I have skipped. But not in a hurry to do that at all :p

Which?
Seems silly to avoid a new mechanic because it wouldn make an already proeminent gameplay method even more proeminent. As is, necros are not desired for anything special. Whatever gives them more group utility would be a good thing. *ferocity weeelllsss*

Either way, character skills facilitating stacking would in no way prevent you from playing without stacking. That's down to encounter design.
