Halo 3 lighting: Best in the biz??

Yep Halo 3 does a ton of light maps in the indoors areas, outdoor it looks very pretty though, but indoors when there are supposed to be spotlights the shadowing is wrong and the lighting is a bit fake, they did a nice job with their HDR implementation, I wouldn't say it's the best in the biz though.

Of all the released games I've played, STALKER wins by a landslide (the lighting in Halo 3 is great, but definitely not the best). Add to that the Float32 mod, and you got a real winner now.

It does right now, I was floored by it in the opening scene. But it'll relinquish that title very soon

Wow. I didn't even think about this game. Indeed though, GT5 has an amazing lighting engine.
It is...it's something that makes GT5 the most realistic looking racer. They have lighting nailed to make the cars look amazing and realistic...no other racing game has quite got what PD has got.

Killzone2 will redefine lighting I'm sure...but it's too far away.

Rasit flood this man with Uncharted gif's!!!

Remember uncharted is doing a jungle environment where every object and leaf produces it's own shadows...shadows that move as the leaves move in the wind.

The sunlight will also glow through leaves...skin to a certain extent (eg. fingers)...

furthermore every explosion will light up corridors, characters...characters that have accurate self-shadowing.

I just played HALO on a co-workers machine, looked fantastic, the lighting did. That being said this game takes the cake -

Best in the biz implies its something other devs havent or couldnt achieve yet, which it surely isnt. It's more of an artistic appeal thing.

Wasn't sure on Uncharted's lighting but this pic definitely makes me reconsider. Very warm and love how it affects the leafs.

This one's from the UNCHARTED thread, lots of fapping over the visuals in there. Go look.

I'm fapping over something else here...

first gif is amazing though, lovely environment.

It really does. The way sunlight floods into the cell when the wall comes down is just incredibly natural. I've never seen a game look that convincing.

Exactly, people need to notice those subtleties.

Better than Halo 3?

Crysis(says Captain Obvious)
Resident Evil 5
Uncharted
Gears of War
Gran Turismo 5
VF5
Swap Gears with Bioshock and add Heavenly Sword and i agree.

Uncharted actually looks pretty bad in terms of lighting. Very basic point effects and ambience. Make it look like video game CG from 8 years ago.

Right now I'd say Heavenly Sword, Halo 3, PGR4, Motorstorm, and Viva Pinata are the best in the business. Halo 3 has amazing character lighting and even better MLB 2K7 on 360 has the best implementation of sunlight and Global Illumination on characters I've ever seen.

I think HL2 Ep2 has better lighting and water to be honest.

You mean reflections right?

I don't know about the technical aspects of lighting, but Heavenly Sword has more striking lighting than Halo 3.

I'd say on the overall, don't ask me why, cause I don't know, PS3 exclusive games like Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, GT5, Motorstorm have better lighting than their 360 counterparts.

I don't know what but there is something in their engines that makes the lighting more realistic, more believable.

I read that X360 can only do fp10 HDR while other systems can handle fp16 or higher. Maybe that's the reason? I'm not too technical on these things so maybe not :D .

I played a game once, I was so overwhelmed. Now I can't help but ask? Could this be the best face modelling in the biz! And the lighting too?

Who cares about lighting, we need a water thread.

QFT

If there is one thing I love with this generation, it is the freaking shaders to do water.

I could look at that shit all day and still be impressed by the XBOX/GCN level stuff.

halo 3 is the most impressive to me of anything released so far, but like any technical achievement, i'm hoping that we see games that beat it sooner rather than later.

those screens and gifs of uncharted don't do much to convince me... but then i doubt screens and gifs of halo 3's lighting would do it justice either.

uncharted looks to have some impressive shadows, and i love the colour rich look of the game (perfect for it if you ask me).

then again, the lighting in the game could be better than halo 3 and without a mode where i can pause and move the camera anywhere i want, i'd probably not really notice.

i so hope more games start using that feature. it really allows you to appreciate the work done on a games visuals, and a game like Uncharted would surely benefit from it as much as Halo 3 has.

I liked the Halo 3 lighting, but I didn't think it was the best lighting I've seen up to that point, and some of the lighting on upcoming games looks absolutely spectacular in comparison.

yeah I agree, it definitley helps showing off the engine...
