Halo 3 lighting: Best in the biz??

I'm fapping over something else here...

first gif is amazing though, lovely environment.

The uboat level in the developer's diary shows that the swing vines also cast shadows on the environment. Uncharted makes me so sorny.

Anyone remember that scene in Star Wars: Rebel Strike that's often used to show its technical prowess, where the shadow moves over the forest with the walkers and explosions.

Is there a GIF like that for Halo 3? I really would like to see its lighting engine in motion.

Some of it is the best in the biz other aspects I saw were not nearly as strong as titles I've seen on the pc or consoles.

Also, I'd like to see a big screenshot of that
jungle encampment, the one with the beasts
from Heavenly Sword.

THAT had some awesome lighting.

the impressive stuff in halo 3 isn't shadows, it's the hdr lighting. it looks so natural, and plays brilliantly off a lot of the surfaces in the game.

hit the screenshot thread and try to find something with an explosion in it.

Why not play it and see for yourself, "Speevy"?

The things that impress me about Halo 3's lighting engine are all the little touches. It's not just the HDR from the sun and subsequent shadowing. It's the slants of light cutting through the forest canopy, the blinding heat that wells up while you're using the flamethrower, the way a plasma grenade stuck to a Warthog's wheel will light the wheel well, the tire, and the ground correctly, as it spins around and around.

Not into Halo, or most FPS games.

But I'm sure it's fantastic. Not doubting that.

I expected another reply...hehehe.

anyway, it's fantastic but TBH, i expected more graphically.

you really get to appreciate the lighting when you go into theater mode and squeeze the camera into funny places -- it produces all these amazingly varied effects, and they all seem to proceed naturalistically from the circumstances. i don't know if hdr in other games would do similar things if you flew a camera around, but halo 3 definitely gets my vote for 'best lighting'

uh, but i think the visuals are otherwise unexceptional

Anyone who doesn't think Halo 3's lighting isn't Top 3 ever hasn't played the game and is going off videos or is just legally blind.

Sorry, I'm not the biggest fan of Halo, but the lighting is jaw dropping.

And :lol :lol :lol at anyone saying Uncharted...I must have missed when the game released.

Hearing people say that Halo 3's lighting looks "natural" never fails to surprise me. The lighting model in that game is anything but natural. It's intended to give things a stylized, colorful look, and in truth, most games that come out these days strive for the same thing.

Now does it make such a model inherently bad or good? That's not my place to say. Personally, I'm just more impressed nowadays with lighting that really tries to give a sense of ambiance and realism without having to resort to an overabundance of glow and bloom.

And because of that, I agree that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has the best lighting system in a game to date.

don't be fooled by some of the terrible choices of screenshots above, Uncharted is really nice looking. i don't think it's going for as natural a look in it's lighting, but i do think the look they have suits the game regardless of what's going on from a technical perspective.

While I can appreciate a screenshot war as well as the next guy I see nothing anyone has posted for any game that approaches the hotness of the lighting displayed in the halo 3 theater screen shot thread.

I'm still trying to figure out what all the fapping is about in Uncharted...looks so oversaturated and the art style isn't really my thing. Maybe it'll grow on me.

Metal Gear Solid 4 has some pretty amazing lighting. This seems to me to be one area where the PS3 shows the 360 up; Gears of War and Halo 3 still use pre-baked stuff while all the top PS3 games are moving on to fully dynamic lighting engines. I guess the expense of all those SPUs is paying off in real terms afterall.

i'm also really impressed with the lighting and color usage in some of the new uncharted shots -- that game is turning out gorgeous

Halo 3's lighting is hardly natural...the HDR is very noticible and reflects off almost all surfaces...but to me it seemed a bit intense and in your face

MGS4 is a good example actually...some of lighting contrast in that game looks very impressive to me

The colors in Uncharted are meant to be like that, they were trying to make a game that graphically is the complete opposite of what's become the norm for a lot current gen games (dark, washed out games).

Here are a few I pulled from the screenshot thread. I only got a few pages in. Basically every damn shot in there shows off some really nice lighting effects.

It is probably because the screenshots in the Halo theater thread are enhanced and the in game video of Uncharted as well as other games are not.
GT has a hell of a photo mode if that counts, as does Forza and PGR4...

no. he's not. he's using screenshots with additional AA and output at a higher resolution than the game runs at.

go play halo 3. theatre mode doesn't do anything to the lighting but capture it in all its beauty.

The only thing added is AA. We're talking lighting, which is exactly as it appears in those screens.

Some screens I took.

I think it's definitely in the top 3.

This shit again? Really? The lighting looks exactly like that in the game. It's not a thread about "teh jaggiez" or "teh missing p's"...

Look, I'm not saying Uncharted won't have the best lighting in the biz when it's released, but lets compare games that are actually in gamer's hands.

I didn't think much of halo 3's lighting until I saw it on my TV, knowing it wasn't touched up or some other bullshit.

halo 3 is the best lighting i've seen in a released game to date... i just don't want it to hold that record for a long time.

why? well i'd love for a game with even prettier lighting to come out sooner rather than later :) can't hate me for hoping uncharted might be that game.

so you admit that that doesnt change the lighting in any way... you just get the chance to appreciate how amazing it is in theater...

Edit: oh, stealth edit

Nope, can't blame ya. Move forward and all that.

it's just that a lot of people here won't state the truth, because of brand allegiance. (not saying you FWIW)

halo 3's lighting is spectacular, and probably the best to date. unreleased games be damned (for now).

Definitely agree with the lighting in Halo 3 being the best I've ever seen - and why? Because it's not the ridiculous blinding bloom crap that most games use, but it looks so damn natural... and add the huge scale to that lighting, and it's really a gorgeous sight to behold...

Nothing else compares to it to me really...

Massive HS Images

And if someone would find that part I referred to earlier, that would be great.

I agree the lighting is fantastic overall, but the dynamic shadowing is jagged and jittery at times.

Playing Orange Box all weekend(HL2 especially), it is funny how differing the HDR effect comes off in that game compared to Halo 3. I mean granted the Source engine is a bit aged, and HDR is more or less a patch, but the effect just feels just that, a frankenstein-esque mishmash of old and new tech. It's subtle, but a generational leap behind Halo 3. (I have not played Ep. 2 yet).

At the start of Chapter 5 in Halo 3, I felt like I could reach out and touch the filth in the atmosphere. Effective lighting and shading.

Names changed to protect the innocent (cept for mine, since I'm guilty)

<EviLore> "Halo 3 Lighting: best in the biz?" <---here I am clicking wanting some hardcore lols, and I see folken's the thread starter. depressing
<T1> hahaha
<T1> how the mighty hath fallen
<K> Any graphics thread may just well be a Crysis thread
<K> If (and this is a big if) you have the hardware, it's simply superior in every technical graphics aspect.
<K> You know
<K> I see these dark10x Halo 3 screenshots in that lighting topic
<K> And I played Halo 3 this afternoon
<K> But I can't remember ever playing a game that looks even remotely as good as that
<S1> mindblowing http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/dark1x/3668173-Full.png
<K> On 360 that is
<S1> this good?!?!
<K> http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/dark1x/3665816-Full.png < If only Halo 3 did look like this
<B> did you guys not hear?
<B> it has two frame buffers
<D> uhh
<D> halo3 does look like that pic k
<D> k - halo3 looks pretty amazing
<D> if bungie had valve's artists
<K> Uhm, I've played it in HD
<D> halo3 would basically be the greatest game ever made
<K> It does NOT look like that
<D> it does on my tv
<EviLore> if bungie had talented graphical people, their games would have good graphics!
<T2> ahuahua
<D> i dont notice any jaggies on my CRT HDTV
<T2> evilore emerges to troll
<K> Maybe if I downsized it, got some filters in there and applied some AA it would look like that
<T1> haha
<D> evil - halo3's engine is pretty amazing
<D> evil - their artists are so-so
<D> and their animators are terrible
<T> so amazing it can't even run at 720p
<T> 640pee
<T> heee
<B> bungie needs better modlers
<D> they're doing a bunch of nice stuff
<B> yeah
<B> halo 3 is very complete
<T> playing halo 3 on a 46" hdtv, it looked pretty good to me.
<B> the bungie.net integration is fantastic
<T1> 720p + 60fps would cause nuclear winters
<T2> lol
<T2> 1080p? forget about it.
<S2> haha
<T2> earth am asploded
<T1> earth would supernova
<D> online coop, physics integration on a ton of objects, saved films, forge, awesome multiplayer, improved matchmaking, etc
<T1> turn into a black hole
<T1> and planets can't even do that shit
<D> besides that
<D> i'll give u guys a protip
<S2> that would rip a tear into the space time continuim
<T1> that's how fucking amazing it would be
<D> tons of games are gonna run at lower resolutions
<D> to do more and look better
<D> and if they dont say anything
<D> no one will notice
<D> :-P
<S1> console games, who gives a shit

Edit: P.S.

<S2> there was a time during the summer that I was thinking of getting with a 50 year old escort

HS levels are massive as well...not as interactive, but just as big, more detailed etc

Eh, but really, the lighting in Halo 3 is that impressive...it sticks out more though because other elements aren't at that level though
