They could have sent out a press release noting a spike in Xbox live activity, if the sales aren't spectacular. They're supposed to be focused on that now as a metric, right?

And yet we had people that shat on it as if it was being done because third party games weren't selling high enough on the platform or some shit. There's a theme going on, isn't there?

4 is looking to be the best selling Uncharted, yet Sony have no problem allowing Naughty Dog to talk up the fact that this is their last uncharted and even allowed them to delay it leaving their holiday lineup basically empty (exclusive wise). After the success of Uncharted trilogy and TLOU I am pretty sure Naughty Dog has a lot of say in what they will be making.

Well unlike Guerilla, Sucker Punch have actually released some good games :L. I disagree with the original poster and feel the only Sony Studio that has a massive pull atm is Naughty Dog. Sony Santa Monica probably did about 5 years ago but no so much after Ascension and the cancelled new IP.

I think worldwide sales will still be lower than previous games but i think that was to be expected.

Don't know about that. MS hasn't really given those numbers out at all this gen. The best you'll get is a statement saying Halo has passed 60 million sales or Forza has had 10 million players next gen

Right, i agree but that's after 5 whole titles, maybe 6 after another TLOU.

But SP? I have bought Gears 3 for 5€ in 2013 during a summer sale.
Played the first two levels and got bored pretty quickly.
No, the franchise went from a pretty atmospheric TPS to hillbilly Bro-Squad BS in no time.

to be fair it's a bit different if you are leading anyway and your first party output is just the sugar on top. if they were at panic mode they would've gotten this out for the holidays.

It's a brand-new IP that got greenlit before Uncharted 3 was even on shelves.

I think Microsoft's problem is that when something it big they keep releasing something every year (on top of that broken/disappointing products), Halo 5 was the best response to MCC in that it worked and was great (imo) but Halo Wars 2 next year... what in 2017? Then presumably Halo 6 in 2018... it ends up being too much.

I dont particularly want to get into a "MS does this, Sony does this" scenario because it seems like a silly argument but its not like Sony have studios work on franchises for long periods of time. I don't see a big issue with having a Halo or Gears studios personally, they have plenty of other new IPs coming, the problem is the constant flow of titles in that time, Fable is also guilty of that although Lionhead were on a new IP, we haven't seen it yet, though.

I think Halo is in an odd spot. It is Microsoft's biggest franchise but I feel we are hitting a saturation point. Five mainline games, several console spin offs, re-releases, mobile titles, TV shows and so on.

There's only so long you can return to the well.

Halo needs a reboot if you ask me.
 
I bet rushing the MCC is sounding like a great idea now. Lets just sell whatever we can now, no one cares about a year or two down the line.

Edit LOL digital sales. Yeah I am sure with them its the best selling Halo ever. O.o

The norm? I don't think many console games are doing the majority digitally, if any at all.

The digital sales argument is tremendously weak. Yes digital sales have increased, but if they sold equal numbers digital and retail (no way) that would still leave them at 300k which is 70k less than Halo 3 did with a smaller install base. So yes, there is some significant shrinkage in that market, no matter how you look at it. These are just numbers, there's no emotion involved.

I'm not saying the franchise is dead, by any means. I do think the FPS genre as a whole is feeling the effects of buyer fatigue, though. The COD hype, for example, just seems to be fading exponentially every cycle. Beyond even the point of people complaining about them. Worse, now people are just used to them coming out.

I also wonder if releasing the collection so close to the launch of the next mainline entry might have contributed to fatigue instead of, as intended, hype. Especially with the technical challenges.

I can't argue with that. Obviously my friendship circle is in the digital demographic, with a 1/9 split. Although, I can't see that averaging out to 4/1 for the nation, but that's just my thoughts rather than actual figures. It is worth noting a lot of my friends do buy physical, and wait for sales, but they all wanted this day one and pre-ordered digitally.


The price I mentioned in the quote? I bought H5 brand new for £16, cheapest elsewhere is £40. It's also ready at midnight with all the ridiculous day one patches installed, I can't see why you wouldn't.

Agreed. I think it might need a good break but I know that wouldn't happen.
 
I'm from the UK and when Halo 4 was released, 1 person on my best mate's friend list was playing it on launch day. Fast forward several years and that same friend list hasn't got anyone playing Halo 5. So it's definitely sold worse than any other Halo from the last few years.

Why now, is everyone in here talking about digital now, is it because the game the #'s are effecting?

I noticed this in the metacritic thread too, suddenly it was like "down with metacritic, who needs these numbers anyway, use open critic instead"
 
So I guess now any time a title underperforms we can just pretend some magical digital sales make up all the difference. Despite the fact we have knowledge that digital is 20% on the high end for AAA titles. Good deal. I'll remember that when one of my favorites bombs.

Agree with this. I love my Xbone - but I wish microsoft were more like Sony in actively seeking original and unique games. I love forza, halo, GoW etc - but can't help be jealous of PS4 and their variety of games / new IP.

On topic - it's low sales for sure, but low sales does not mean a bad game. Still sad though

Numbers can't mean much. Almost every person that I invited using the Gaf halo Google doc has been playing halo. Same for the people in my halo clan. Destiny schmestiny

And this argument is also weak. Halo 3 was a monster, it was at the peak of it's popularity with one of the greatest marketing campaign pushes ever seen in video games. It was on the more popular platform during a very different gaming landscape (mobile games, free to play games, and even other FPS weren't huge)

It's unlikely unless there's a really good XB1 bundle including Halo 5. The sales are so front loaded in the UK that Christmas doesn't spike them past release week sales, bar some exceptions usually around kids games.
