Yikes that sucks! Sorry to hear you might have a little burn in there. Do you watch blue ray discs with your PS3? I'm considering these pioneers but it doesn't output 1080p so I'm curious how the picture looks with a bluray movie.
I have yet to watch a blu-ray on it yet, call me anal retentive, crazy whatever, but im waiting for my 705 so i can get the great sound along with the picture. Right now i only have 5.1 of the polks setup with a very old Aiwa amp running dolby pro logic.
Hopefully this friday i get my 705. But the TV accepts a 1080p/24 signal which apparently looks really good.
I have watched enough HD content to say that its great, super stardust looks amazing on it.

You people seem to be in the know, so here's my question:

Where the fuck is Jurassic Park? That shit is Universal, right? So it should be released on HD-DVD? Why don't they release obvious system sellers? My PS3 serves as my HD movie player for now, so I've been getting only blu-rays, but something like JP would force me to get the HD-DVD add-on for the 360.

Studios will not release their major catalog releases until the market goes beyond the niche that it is.

That sucks but I guess it makes sense though. Its still an endless loop of shit imo. Studios don't wanna release their big guns because of the niche market, but its those big guns that would help propel the market past niche status.

I think the only thing that would force me to rebuy a HDDVD drive is the BTTF trilogy, but it would have to be a really, really good transfer.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I think plenty of big titles are already out:

-Batman Begins
-PoTC
-300
-King Kong
-Matrix
-Casino Royale
-Casablanca

etc.

plus all the big theatrical hits will arrive on the formats likely day and date with the dvd's. Lord of the Rings is currently being worked on. Sometimes, its the directors. Spielberg and Lucas have a lot of control over their titles and how they are released.

I think it is more an issue that Spielberg has control over it and will not toss it out there until the whole BR vs HD thing is resolved unless universal throws down some heavy coin.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I'm not sure why spielberg (or any other director for that matter) should care about the format war. It's not like the film will lose some luster if it is released dual format.

Jurassic Park is not coming out on HD-DVD. Spielberg is siding with Blu-ray, while JP is Universal's movie. And yet Universal can't release it without Spielberg's permission, so that's what's happening. HD-DVD fans are just wishful thinking if they expect JP is coming anytime soon

I think it is a wee bit presumptuous to say that because one of his movies is coming out on BR that he is in the BR family and cock blocking his movies on HD, though it is a good start.
Let's just not get ahead of ourselves.

Two of Speilberg's films are owned by Columbia Tri Star (which is Sony Pictures); Hook and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Sony is releasing Close Encounters this year on BRD, and due to his warped little mind he has some fucked up theory that it means that Spielberg is Blu-Ray exclusive when in reality only two of his films belong to a Blu-Ray exclusive studio. The rest of his films are on Format Neutral or HD-DVD exclusive studios.

Duel (1971) - HD-DVD
The Sugarland Express (1974) - HD-DVD
Jaws (1975) - HD-DVD
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - Blu-Ray
1941 (1979) - HD-DVD
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - Neutral
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - HD-DVD
Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) (second segment) - Neutral (and coming out on both this year)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - Neutral
The Color Purple (1985)- Neutral
Empire of the Sun (1987)- Neutral
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)- Neutral
Always (1989) - HD-DVD
Hook (1991) - Blu-Ray
Jurassic Park (1993) - HD-DVD
Schindler's List (1993) - HD-DVD
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - HD-DVD
Amistad (1997) - Neutral
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - Neutral
Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001) - Neutral
Minority Report (2002) - Neutral
Catch Me If You Can (2002) - Neutral
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: 20th Anniversary Edition (2002) (edited re-release in 2002) - HD-DVD
The Terminal (2004) - Neutral
War of the Worlds (2005) - Neutral
Munich (2005) - Neutral
Indiana Jones 4 (2008) - Neutral

Unless Spielberg comes out and says he's siding with Blu-ray, it's all speculation. However, the fact that he shot down HD DVD and wants to release 3rd Kind on Blu-ray probably has more to do with the rift he has with Universal than HD DVD.

Remember, Universal used to distribute for Spielberg's Dreamworks. For example, Gladiator, which is now owned by Paramount and will probably soon be owned someone else.

I think all Dreamworks titles are on hold in HD because of this, with the exception of 1 or 2 titles that were already in encoding stages. I hope Transformers doesn't get delayed because of this.

Dreamworks titles are on hold because they may be splitting from Paramount.

How did he "shoot down" HD DVD? Because none of his movies have yet appeared on the format? Does that mean that he shot down BR until the announcement? Is Lucas shooting down both formats? Is any movie not yet released on either format a sign that whoever is in charge is "shooting" down these formats?

You're on a roll lately.

I agree with what you are saying, but the studio really does not matter until the movies are released.
Much like Lucas, Spielberg keeps close control of his work.

Why don't you read what I said? Taking half a sentence and putting your own spin on it. I said Spielberg's decision to prevent Universal from releasing his movies probably has more to do with the rift between him and Universal, not HD DVD. If his movies were on, say Warner, he might have had no issues. And he clearly doesn't with Sony.

Take off the red goggles, and you might not see everything as an attack against HD DVD.

VanMardigan

That's the point, there hasn't been any "shooting down" on anything as far as we know (including Universal). Speilberg is notoriously controlling, so its no surprise he's taking his time authorizing the releases of his movies. Until an announcement is made, there isn't anything we can really deduce.

If i recall correctly there was a "leaked" release list from Universal that High Def Digest posted that had quite a few Speilberg titles on it, then Speilberg representatives or whatever sent out a press release refuting the leaked list with his movies on it.

Edit: Beaten and with a link by DJK.

At the risk of sounding cynical, we can't say we're particularly surprised by this news. As battle-scarred survivors of the early DVD days -- when Spielberg notoriously held off the release of any of his major titles from the format for years -- this is par for the course. Spielberg and fellow behemoth George Lucas have never been known to quickly embrace new home video formats, and we expect that won't change anytime soon -- especially with a next-gen battle raging, and no clear winner yet in sight.

Like I said, it's par for the course for Speilberg. I'm even surprised at the BR Close Encounters, but to stretch it into BR exclusive support is absurd.

While searching fry's.com I ran across this.

You get Hellboy and Casino Royal instantly plus the 5 free mail in movies when you by a PS3 for $499.99. The offer ends the 10th. I actually went to the Fry's down the road and sure enough they had the display up.

That's an amazing deal.

I remembered I had to pick up Blu-ray films myself when I got my PS3. Now people are ending up with 7 movies off the bat. :(

Now it's official! 250k of 300 did sell! I think that surpassed everyone's estimates.

http://blogs.usatoday.com/technologylive/2007/08/blu-ray-continu.html

Excellent attach ratio for HD DVD. But that may be the bad news, seeing that pretty much the vast majority of this Summer's blockbusters are either neutral or Blu-ray exclusive. So if those remotely come close to selling 50k per title at a minimum, well you know............

Ratatouille is set for Nov 6 as well. This title could break 100k by the PS3 owners. Same for Pirates3. I think Spiderman Trilogy and Spiderman 3 will combine for 100k as well.

Die Hard 4 and Silver Surfer might be in the 60k range.

Uh oh.... High def digest under BDA money hats!

The Spider-Man films (Oct. 30) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (Dec. 4) are coming to Blu-ray later this year. Overall, released titles on Blu-ray outnumber HD DVD roughly 2-to-1. Impressive numbers overall for both formats. Of the Fall releases, only Ratatouille being exclusive hurts me.. I will probably end up just watching it in SD.

The others are bound to be great sellers, but I haven't heard that many positive impressions of them.

OMG!!

Blu-ray continues to outpace HD DVD
The stylistic Spartan battle film 300 has charged to the fastest sales start of any high-def video disc release yet, according to Warner Home Video. Consumers have purchased more than 250,000 copies of the film in the competing Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats since its release July 31. That far surpasses the previous hot seller, also from Warner, The Departed, which took three months to sell 100,000 copies.

So far, the Blu-ray Disc version of 300 is outselling the HD DVD version, 65% to 35%. According to Home Media Research, that mirrors the overall sales pattern this year (Jan-June), with Blu-ray accounting for 67% and 33% for HD DVD,.

Warner releases movies on both of the competing formats. Sony, Disney and Fox only support Blu-ray, while Universal exclusively supports HD DVD.

The Spider-Man films (Oct. 30) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (Dec. 4) are coming to Blu-ray later this year. Overall, released titles on Blu-ray outnumber HD DVD roughly 2-to-1. Did you like the POTC2 movie or were you mesmerized by the PQ? :D I have to admit watching a few movies that I wouldn't usually give the time of day just because of the improved PQ. For example "Smoking Aces" was kind of a waste of 2 hours, but I watched most of it just because it was in HD.

I think what's more impressive is that the 360 is $100 cheaper with Forza 2! Too bad for reliability issues. :(
