Why were they impractical? Because Laserdisc was bigger than a VHS? DVHS started right when DVD started and never really stood a chance. DVD did everything they did but better.

Laserdisc was a solid step up both in audio and visual. How was it impractical? Because it was a large 12" disc? Most people (including myself) were able to forgive that in lieu of the benifits of the format.

Laserdisc had 2 main problems:

1) Form Factor - I'm not sure if people cared that much about the size, but they definitely didn't like flipping disks halfway through a movie.

2) It was too early - This is relating to it's A/V advantages. In its heyday, most people owned TV's without S-Video. Due to that, they had to rely on the shitty comb filters found in most TV's. Other then a lack of tracking errors and tape deterioration artifacts, the video advantages simply weren't that noticeable with what most people used as displays.

Similarly, most people didn't have stereos hooked up to their TV's, so the audio benefits were lost for the most part.

When you consider the above, and then couple it with the price ... not many people were going to bite. Why pay so much more, when the only obvious advantages are track skipping and no deterioration?

Note: I love Laserdisc (especially in terms of audio). Just stating why I think it failed.

Casino Royale Blu-Ray's MSRP is $38.96. Good luck with the mainstream.

And DVD MSRPs are jacked way up over what you actually find in stores. Let's not play this game.

My family in the states is shipping me a stack of bluray movies as an awesome care package. I can`t wait. :D

You aren't really going to argue price point between LD and blu-ray movies are you?

Besides LD didn't have the benefit of all the online mail order bargains, discounted prices etc.. I mean who the **** is going to actually pay $38.96 for Casino Royale.

1) Note 'MSRP' ...

2) You keep trumpeting how great Laserdisc was ... I recall many titles actually retailing in that price range ... and this was 15 years ago. :\

$40 was the absolute lowest tier pricing for LD also. Any decent movie such as T2, Star Wars etc were closer to $100. Forget about Criterion movies..$150.

Look. Just give it up.

Unless you can come up with reasonable responses to my points, stop coming up with these facetious half thought out pseudo examples.

BD takeover is inevitable, even if it won't instantly oust DVD or even HD-DVD from contention.

My two cents:

I have an HDTV and I care about the HD media. I don't care which wins, and will not buy either media until there is a clear and solid winner. Blu-Ray is looking good now, but I can wait. It's not like the sales numbers for either format holds a candle to DVD, and the disc prices are still about double that of DVDs.

Records were around from the late 1800's. Cassettes were around for about 20 years. VHS was around for about 20 years. In those cases, people were ready to upgrade. Most average Joes just rebought their movie collections in 2000/2001, and I don't think they will want to re-buy them again five or six years later. In addition to having just rebuying their collection, the upgrade isn't as significant as VHS to DVD was.

Blu-Ray / HD-DVD will probably end up being a supplement format to DVD, much like Laserdisc was to VHS. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. I had a Laserdisc player from 1992+ and loved it. Movies were WAY more expensive, but much better considering the alternative (VHS). I think the same will hold true for the HD format. They will be more expensive than DVD, but will be able to hold their own with the audiovideophiles until a true successor comes along in about 10 years. Just like VHS --> Laserdisc --> DVD.

When there's a clear winner, I'll invest in the HD format, even though I know it will be more expensive. At least it won't be as bad as Laserdisc, where I would routinely pay anywhere between $40-$100 per movie (Criterions and special editions were at the top end of the price range).
This isn't the worst trolling of HD I've ever seen, but I'm getting pretty annoyed by the people who think they're being clever when they attempt to connect current formats to formats of the past and predict the outcome. It doesn't work for consoles, it's not going to work for these formats. It's consumer electronics, it moves too fast and it's history is too short to repeat itself. You can buy BRDs for $15-$35, the media upgrade is necessary to take advantage of the emerging display standard (HDTV) and a popular game console can play it. It's a new approach to market entry, you don't have any real analogy to use. Please, please, just shut up.

I will bet the last ounce of my mother's blood that will not be the case. 1920x1080p is going to be the HD standard for at least a decade if not more. Not because higher res isn't producable in the future, but that it's difficult enough to get people to invest in HD to begin with.

The winner of this format war will be THE definitive home media disc in a few years. That's why the fight is so heated and why Toshiba didn't want to lose the royalty that will be gained from it.

Laserdisc, DVHS, were all stop-gap solutions but completely unpractical.

agree. DVD was a nice format but isn't up to speed with display technology, so there is a need to improve.

1080p provides a noticeable increase in resolution for todays larger TVs (don't forget average TV size has increased a lot over the last 20 years) and should be a good resolution to last 10-20 years

SD-DVD was just a stopgap (albeit a nice one)

OMG, my Casino Royale status says it's shipped!

And I'm still waiting for my copy of Prestige to come in the mail. I am going to be 1 happy camper at the end of the week with 2 movies coming my way! :D

And BTW, my casino royale blu-ray disc cost me $36 after tax CAD. Not bad considering the quality I expect.

it's possible that was a joke post with a photoshopped pic, but for some reason, dvdempire.com charts have been known to change. whether it's because of changes in orders, or because they are incomplete in tabulation, who knows, but yeah it wouldn't be the first time they do that, so I wouldn't assume straightaway some guy was making up stuff to "boost" hd dvd...

Its wasnt a photoshop the numbers were actually like that at one point.

The first poster posted at 10:30 AM yesterday, and the poster that posted the corrected and actual stats posted at 3:30pm on the same day.

Moreover, that chart is for the week ending 6th of march (and there's been a new chart released since then).

Take from that what you will.

Yep. I saw them and took a double take. Clearly they were an error as they don't publish interim results. That, or DVD-EMPIRE is biased against HD-DVD and changed the data because they didn't like the results.

DVD Empire is recording sales from their own site.

When you have Amazon giving 50% off sales on nearly every BD title of course no one is going to buy BDs from DVD Empire.

He's right. The DVD Empire numbers for Blu-ray went down as soon as the Amazon sales started, which gave HD DVD the lead to start the week. DVD Empire uses a day-to-day active sales chart so it fluctuates. When people ran out of titles to buy on amazon (mainly because they're sold out) they went to DVD Empire.

Regardless, that is a very bad sign for HD DVDers. Meaning that even an amazon sale couldn't prevent Blu-ray taking 1st week of March at DVD Empire.

Still no Fox announcement for Last King of Scottland Blu-ray :( Dvd comes out April 17th. I'm gonna be pissed at Fox if there is no day and date Blu-ray release.

well, i guess if you're going to get it online might as well go amazon since it's listed as in stock. Futureshop and best buy are out online. Chapters doesn't even have it listed. I may check BB and FS this evening when i go pick up God of War 2 to see if they have any in stock.

I faithfully await my pre-order. I'm hoping it comes Thursday. Probably won't see it till Saturday or Sunday since I promised my friends movie night with this and Prestige on Blu-Ray. :D
