That's when it is so goddamn terrible-- when you realize your hardcore community isn't worth a shit. I remember when Okami came out and everyone posted on GAF saying they had it and it was great, etc etc, and the numbers came out and it sold like nothing. Dreams -> shattered.

So i have a few questions for the audioholics.
Im running optical over PS3 to my Sony DAVFC8(from about 3-4 years ago), and LinearPCM setting in PS3 shows up as "PCM dolby pro logic" on my reciever, even when i select 5.1 dolby digital from a blu-ray or uncompressed. But when i switch the setting to Bitstream it shows up as Dobly digital when i select 5.1 digital track in blu-ray.
Whats the difference between bitstream and LinearPCM. LinearPCM is for uncompressed stuff when your reciever can accept it right?

Also im looking to upgrade eventually, the dream system is great, but its still a home theater in a box. So im wondering what recievers you guys use if your going for the uncompressed sound and such. I have read several of the stickied recievers threads at AVS, they sort of helped but sort of confused me more(i love this hi def stuff, audio and all that and its still confusing me).

It's to my understanding that you can't output Linear PCM over optical. It'll only work through HDMI. Thus you need to use bitstream in order to get 5.1 dolby digital over optical.

Well that explains one question.

Not true. You'll get PCM but only 2.0. Optical doesn't have the bandwidth for 6 channels of uncompressed audio.

Picked up the last copy of Casino Royale today at Future Shop - all 3 of the special Blu-Ray racks were picked cleaned. The guy in the DVD section said he hadn't seen a release clear out this quickly in ages. o_O

If Casino Royale is doing as well as it looks, then I'd expect some kind of press release or at least some interest in the Videoscan numbers for March

Anyone know where to get replacement Bluray cases? My Casino Royale is kinda messed up and won't close right...

My flap won't lock into place, which isn't a big deal since I usually fold them inside.

Anyway watched CR last night with my dad, man nice transfer definately one of the best (thought it looked just as good as The Prestige)

Any deals going on at FS on Blu-Ray?

Thats why his reciever was going into pro-logic mode, it was getting a PCM stereo signal.

As for upgrading recievers I am still waiting. I don't know of any HDMI 1.3 recievers even out yet. They seem to be a little behind the TV manufacturers.

bleh. I have Casino Royale in my netflix cue and now its a "Very Long Wait" I haven't seen it yet... it it worth buying? I like bond movies but TBH I never got any bond DVDs. How does this one compare to say Goldeneye?

It doesn't. Actually, it doesn't really compare to any of the Pierce Brosnan movies (which I like). It's much grittier, back to basics. It works well, and it still has the excellent production values. I didn't own any of the other Bond movies, but this one is worth buying IMO.

How i this metric measured? I it based on rate of sales, or total sales or what? I mean like, crap, to see a blu-ray film that high up? o_O

Total number sales of how fast it is selling versus other movies: DVD, HD DVD, Blu Ray.

Same in the Canadian Best Buy where I got mine. I actually got the last copy which was mistakenly placed between the 2 DVD discs and I found it by accident. The rack with the BD copies was all sold out. They didn't even have the model car to give me :(

Is this film supposed to be on two BDs, like some special edition or something? Mine was packaged regularly and it's on one disc.

Ars Technica has an article of a BDA guy stating that BD will unseat DVD in 3 years. Although preposterous, it's still funny nonetheless with this statement from Ars:

Although Blu-ray has been making up ground on HD DVD recently, we're a long way off from being able to declare a winner. And the battle to unseat DVD? That has barely begun.

:lol :lol :lol Making up ground?

And the discussion is just as funny.

Recently I've started to have doubts about Blu-ray's eventual dominance. If I had to choose I'd still pick Blu-ray over HD DVD, but it's much less certain than a year ago. It will be several years before the PS3 wins this console war, by which time having the Blu-ray drive in it won't matter because standalone Blu-ray players will be cheap enough. Meanwhile, in the present, most commercial HD DVDs are 30 GB and most Blu-ray discs are 25 GB, and the studios are using VC-1 for HD DVD and MPEG-2 for Blu-ray. HD DVD movies are clearly better quality than Blu-ray at the moment, and the drives are much cheaper.

I can say now that Blu-Ray releases are coming out fast and furious. However, this is not necessarily a good thing! Despite Blu-Ray superiority, it appears that the Blu-Ray releases are basically very rushed releases - they're pushed out there to build the library. The main issue I have is that unless my PS3 is the problem, Blu-Ray movies don't look 6 times better than a DVD. In fact, I'd be hard-pressed to say they're better at all, with some Blu-Ray releases being worse than the equivalent DVD release (e.g., Talladega Nights - my HD-DVD player upconverted the DVD to 1080i (I have a 1080p TV) much better than the "native" 1080p produced by the PS3).

A PS3 pack in not up to par? Shocking!

From AnimeOnDVD:

Paprika Hits Blu-ray (08:28 PM EDT): After word of a release in France, a Region A release has now been announced for Japan via CD Japan. Due on 05/23/2007, no specs are available for the release yet but it is compatible with all US based players including the PlayStation 3.

Seriously, I only read the articles by Hannibal for interest sake. Everything else there has gone down hill.

I like their new interface though.

I think you should be ok, the TN pack in was released almost a month before the actual release of the movie.

Okay, so I'm probably going to buy a PS3 in the next week or so.

I need a HD TV though. Since I'm a grad student and budget limited, which one should I get?

It's about $45 over at Amazon and CDJapan. I'll probably get it from YesAsia, since I have a $10 off coupon I need to use. I'm waiting for confirmation of English subtitles before I place my preorder, though.

Sounds like it's a total barebones release compared to the DVD version.

Any 32" one should be fine. Depends on how you plan to set it up.

I'm not going for a SUPAR 7.1 sound system, if that's what you mean. Just the TV would be fine.

Actually, I've been debating whether or not to go for the 720p or 1080p sets. There isn't that much of a difference for the price, is there?

Well, you'd still be paying a premium for the 1080p sets. Considering you're still a student (and I'm not really familiar with your boarding now) I'd stick with a decent 720 p set. Maybe get a 1080p set when you graduate. ;)

I think my question to ask is, what is your budget and what is the set uo you want. I suggested the 32" one thinking you're putting this in a dorm room or something.

At the absolute limit, I can probably spend a maximum of $2000 CAD on a set. I really don't want to hit that mark, but it should be enough to buy a decent one, no?

But yeah, it's probably going to be in a small-to-medium room setup.

At smaller sizes 720p versus 1080p really is damn hard to differentiate between unless you are a videophile. I would say if you have $2000CAD max to get a nice 720p set that will last you a couple years and then go for the 1080p or get a mid level 720p and a decent 5.1 surround sound setup.

New numbers up for last week's sales. Keep in mind there were no releases in the week of Mar 06.

Blu-ray: 81.5%. HD DVD: 18.5% = 4.4:1 ratio

This is based on the Neilson Videoscan report. The people at AVS are speculating that Videoscan may not have taken the Amazon 50% sale into account.

Great. I hope Blu-Ray keeps the momentum and stomps HD-DVD into the ground. There is still DVD to beat, though :|

I highly recommend you check this set out at Best Buy. It's a 1080p Toshiba 42" LCD. And they have it on sale for $1999. Try to talk them down to lowering it another $100.
