Yeah, I view selling the Matrix Trilogy as one package ($100) as Warner shooting themselves in the foot. It would be much more logical to sell them individually but I guess they figure since enthusiast are buying into the format first...they don't mind plunking down $100 in one shot.

Hmmm... now that I remembered that "Planet Earth" is coming at the end of April. I really do doubt that I would be into another 100$ boxed set.

Planet Earth is a better purchase IMO :)

Update on last week's sales numbers.

Blu-ray is now outselling HD DVD by 4.3:1 ratio

That's 2 straight weeks where Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD by 4:1 ratio. Next week should be a different story. Both formats are getting similar titles and I predict the numbers to be close, since Children of Men vs Pursuit of Happyness. Easy choice for me. Never liked Will Smith anyway.

Sure but its a double negative for HDDVD, not sure if its really the best thing to point out if your trying to jab BD:lol. Either way, bad sales or no titles HDDVD doesn't look good at the moment.

Its BD's superior studio clout (as far as the amount of studio support) shining through.

Waiting for the Blu Ray Java issues to be filtered out. Hopefully over the summer.

Even Bill Hunt has thrown out October as the likely time for that. He's even hinted at early-2008.
And speaking of Bill Hunt, I'm shocked that he doesn't know that only sales made at retail count toward sales numbers. The "3 free" and "5 free" movie deals are mail-in offers.

Nobody is going to be paying $100 unless they buy it at Suncoast. For reference, the Mission Impossible Ultimate Missions Collection is also $99.99 MSRP, and Walmart carried it for $59.99.

Thats a huge difference in pricing, wow. Would be awesome for HDDVD owners if it was $60 (coming in at $20 per title)

I'll bet my money on blu-ray sale number all the way

Apocalypto isn't that good. But it got great photography which would make it a nice HD experience.

Has anyone watched Crash on Blu-ray, is it worth the money? I love the movie but getting it again when I own it on DVD doesn't feel that necessary if it's a bad transfer.

why? In the early stages of a hardware platform there should be lots of new HDDVD owners who will be buying existing discs as much as current owners will buy new titles. So the lack of new releases shouldn't make that much difference IMO

CES 2007: 24, Prison Break Hit Blu-ray
Fox to ship the first seasons of both hit TV shows on Blu-ray Disc in early 2007.
by IGN Staff

January 8, 2007 - According to the CES 2007 trade paper Blu-ray Today, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release both the first seasons of its hit television shows 24 and Prison Break on Blu-ray Disc "early this year."

"With DVD, Fox was one of the last and most tentative but we are not tentative at all now," said Peter Staddon, executive vice president of marketing at Fox. "We're very aggressive with catalog rollouts and complete support of new releases. There is no comparison to the first six months of DVD with the amount of product on the marketplace."

No word on exact pricing or availability yet, but these two sets are definitely big releases for the Blu-ray format. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

I asked the BD insiders at AVS. Paidgeek expects Profile 1.1 (PIP functionality + more) titles in the fall and Profile 2.0 titles (BD Live) in December.

I really doubt the overall numbers will change much at all. The PS3 is driving this train, not the content.

Especially considering that the Matrix Trilogy will be coming to bluray soon, but Pirates and Apocalypto.... well unfortunately hd-dvd will not be seeing them.

October would be fall, so I'm not sure what the dispute is here. I guess one might come right now when I mention that the estimates so far have been overly optimistic.
On a positive note, Sony is apparently ditching PCM soundtracks soon for TrueHD. Just one more example of the competition from HDDVD improving BRD.

That's good news for the format, but it'll suck for people with early standalone BD players that will not be able to decode it though.

So, seeing as the PS3 already has Dolby TrueHD decoding, and will probably be getting DTS-HD Master via firmware somewhere down the line, from an audio perspective, I won't be gaining anything by waiting for an HDMI 1.3 reciever, versus a current HDMI 1.1 reciever?

And if that is true, then the only thing that an HDMI 1.3 reciever would give me is a passthru for xvYCC, if I had an HDTV with that capability, correct?

I thought you could upgrade all players?

Overall, I am more excited about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (4/24), Being John Malkovich (6/26), The big Lebowski (5/29), and Lost in Translation (5/29) which are only on HD DVD since they are Universal Pictures movies. However, I'll probably end up buying the Matrix pack and the Pirates movies on the 22nd also :D .

yes. HDMI 1.1 (with audio processing, some work just as switches) is all you need. Loving my Denon 2307 with uncompressed LPCM.

Although if PS3 doesn't get upgraded to include DTS-MA for whatever reason, then a HDMI 1.3 receiver that decoded it (such as the new Denons coming out soon) would at least give you that option.

I'm new to this 'war' and just for reference sakes does anybody know how many DVDs were sold in the week ending 18th March? It looks like HD movies sold roughly 100k.

screw dolby digital plus, and screw studios that use it - especially the borked 640kb/s versions which really isn't very '+' at all :) I want uncompressed LPCM or TrueHD or DTS-MA. Preferably the first two as the PS3 already supports them.

Many current BD standalone players lack an integrated True HD decoder since it's not mandatory in Blu-ray hardware specs. That's the reason you see many titles with PCM tracks (no need of a decoder, but takes a whole lot of space) instead of a True HD track, and why Warner doesn't even bother putting one for their Blu-ray releases. It's not something that you can just magically add with a firmware update.

But since about 99.9% of this forum own a PS3 anyways for their BD playback, it isn't something that I would be concerned since the decoder is already integrated in the console.

Any idea when the new Denons are due out? I'm going to pick up an AVR-887 soon and am willing to wait a little longer if i can get it cheaper cause new models are out.

I thought it was June/July for the 4808. Going to be expensive though

I must admit I probably would've went the way of HD DvD if I didn't buy a PS3 at the end of the year.

I think it's awesome that Blu Ray is doing so well since I won't buy my movies unless they're on bluray now...I was just wondering how are bluray sales or big named titles compared to the DvD counterpart?

I don't know an exact comparison, but we do know that they are out-pacing DVD at the same point in it's lifetime.

Just wanna make a comment, Sony and BDA spent tons of dough for advertising blu-ray disc during the march madness. I saw lotsa Casino Royale & Rocky Balboa commercials during the games

It matters how the system was designed. Some can be upgraded to include it.
