According to various reports, Blu Ray movies now work at 720P with the 1.8 firmware. I haven't tested this myself and won't be able too till tommorrow.

Those of you holding out with 720P sets have no need anymore! ;)

I can confirm that 720P/60 does work with Blu Ray movies, and it works over DVI too as long as it is HDCP compliant (as my LCD TV is). :D

anyone know why some of my blu ray movies have black bars at the top and botttom, but others don't? I don't like that Pirates has them and yet Chicken Little doesn't.

Well, Warner bros. sure has cleaned house by going both HD-DVD/Blu-ray. They just announced their press release for the Departed sales. Warner Bros. is king of all the studios at this time and they clearly express this in their press release. It's amazing to think by offering choice Warner Bros. is on top. Disney, Sony, Fox and Universal should all be ashamed of themselves.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I'd love to see Universal go dual format.........but only AFTER Fox and Disney. :D

I don't think Sony/Columbia will go neutral unless their format struggles.

Klee, how much does Sony pay you. The very last line you quoted about HDDVD version:

"Neither is an advantage to my eyes and each encode is identical otherwise -- fans of both camps should be ecstatic to see this film looking so good."

How the hell does that translate into highdefddigest declaring a winner. And we're still talking about a huge difference in bitrate between the two leading to no clear advantage per a neutral source.

An aside, but the PS3 does a much better job upscaled DVD than my set did (which wasn't bad). My son's Dora the Explorer videos have never looked so good!

I don't think I've ever seen an upscaled dvd. ever.

I really need an hdmi tv.

They look better, but honestly its not a night and day difference. Its nice especially if your TV does a bad job of scaling, but its not going to make it a great image.

Yeah, pretty much.

If you have a fixed-resolution display (basically anythign but a CRT) than something is scaling everythign to that resolution. In my case, 720P. My projector does a good job, but now that the PS3 does it, I see that it looks better. I didn't really mind before (or know to), but it's a nice improvement.

Holy shit! I haven't been paying attention to that thread as it has ballooned into something monstrous. But I didn't expect that at all!

Oh, and Revenge of the Sith looks really good upscaled! :D

Such a simple statement that so many people just dont get... which is why I want an external processor really badly.. that way I can feed everything into it at its native output and have a crazy good scaler shoot everything to my TV 1080p and just not worry about my TV not handling an image right.

It's a little more than that, Wulfer:

"We owe this success to a combination of great content and our decision to support both high definition formats..."

and

"releasing more titles than any other studio"

Paramount is format neutral like Warner - how well have they done, in comparison to the studios that have picked one format?

VanMardigan said:
My next tv for sure is going to be 1080p, too.

My 1080i tv looks great for now, but no hdmi means no upscaling for me.

You can always try out the upscaling via VGA on your 360 (if your TV does support it).

Paramount has probably released the fewest movies of any studio. WHERE IS MY TEAM AMERICA.. ITS IN YOUR AD BEFORE YOUR MOVIES.

Panasonic's player now sells for $600 + 5 movies. It's supposedly the best BD standalone on the market.

Among the first-generation Blu-ray players, Panasonic's DMP-BD10 was remarkable for its higher-than-average price tag ($1,300 versus the $1,000 norm) and the company's promise of a future firmware upgrade that would unleash the full sonic power of Blu-ray audio soundtracks. Having made good on the firmware upgrade in April, Panasonic has now shaved 54 percent off the price. In addition to sporting the upgraded firmware, the newly christened DMP-BD10A will retail for $600 and include five Blu-ray movies--Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Transporter, Fantastic Four, and Crash. Not coincidentally, all five films are Blu-ray exclusives; barring a major sea change in the high-def format war, it's unlikely they'll be seen on HD DVD in the foreseeable future.

While the newly discounted DMP-BD10A will be the exact same price as the Blu-ray-capable PlayStation 3, its audio capabilities may give it a leg up on Sony's console--at least for home theater buffs who appreciate such subtleties. Panasonic is pledging that the DMP-BD10A will deliver onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, a feature that would distinguish it from rival players such as the Samsung BD-P1200, which cannot decode those bleeding-edge better-than-DVD audio soundtracks or even pass them to an external AV receiver. And the Panasonic's 7.1-channel analog outputs would, in theory, be able to deliver those top-notch soundtracks to most run-of-the-mill AV receivers--no fancy HDMI ports required.

We'll be putting the DMP-BD10A to the test as soon as we can get our hands on a sample.

Shaun of the Dead on July 31st.. sweet! Can't wait for both that and Heroes on on 8/28. $80 list price means it should be $60 or so on Amazon. I can definitely live with that. =)

has calmed down a bit.
What were the major releases that week, I can't remember.

Next week's the big one, though, with Matrix and POTC.

BTW, my tv has DVI. Is there any way for the 360 or Ps3 to interface with it?

Those numbers look different from what we have seen in the past. I wonder what drove the sales of BB and CR.

Some people are speculating that the price drop of HDDVD players are driving more sales and that BB is usually the first title they pick up for that format.

You can get a DVI-->HDMI cable. That's what I'm using with my HDTV and PS3.

Does that offer up a better picture than component? What are the advantages to that setup vs. component?

It looks better, to me at least. Plus, you can use an upconverting DVD player or take advantage of the DVD upscaling features on the PS3.

It was also one of Frys 13 dollar movies. I would think its a combo of the spike in player sales and the movie being on sale. Its certainly one of the biggest movies on the format.

:lol @ Batman Begins being the no. 1 title for HD DVD (although looking at the weekly shares this doesn't seem to be a that bad sign).

Judging by the ranking I'm guessing a good number of HD DVD players were sold during that week with many people picking up Batman Begins along with it.
