Wow, they made a third one. Jesus it WOULD be shit.

It was. It really was.

Saw Warm Bodies today. Not really a horror film, but a romantic film some of the horror fans around here might enjoy.

Or to put it another way, it's not just for teenage girls.

Livid(e) was made by the directors of Inside, I think. I really wanted to see it and I really don't know why it hasn't been licensed in the US; apparently it's up for an English-language remake, even.
Ugh, remakes. I think I'll pass if I can't find the original with subtitles.

"rented" the abcs of death from amazon. it was entertaining but definitely a mixed effort as you can imagine. here is my brief review of each short:

A- I like this one! Good effects. short and sweet! 8/10
B- pretty good! i wish the "monster" was better but i liked it. 7/10
C- might have considered it better if
time crimes or the triangle
didn't exist. 5/10
D- really good. enjoyed it a lot.... the concept and execution! 8/10
E- this one was alright. gross ending of course! 6/10
F- lol holy shit.... what the i don't even.... not sure if this was absolutely awesome or horrible. i'll go with awesome! 9/10
G- ehhhh i dont know, i thought this one was pretty lame. lasted like 60 seconds and i just didn't like it. 2/10
H- pretty wild. i didn't think it was that great but ill give it credit for being wild. 5/10
I- i liked this one a lot! very short but the title and the way things go down just struck a chord with me. 9/10
J- made me laugh so ill give it credit there. not that great though. 4/10
K- the first of the
animated shorts
. ehhhh i can't say i hated it but not a big fan. 4/10
L- probably my favorite of the movie. violent, perverse and didn't pull any punches. extremely hard to watch but very hard to look away as well. 10/10
M- disappointing coming from
ti west
, who i like a lot. i feel like it was just a waste of a short and especially coming from a dude who has created some entertaining stuff in the past. 2/10
N- lol this one was pretty good.... pretty funny! 7/10
O- predictable for this letter. didn't like it at all. i get what the guy is going for obviously but just too artsy for my liking! 2/10
P- ugh again very hard to watch the ending of this one. totally went opposite of where i thought it was going. i liked it. 7/10
Q- i liked
v/h/s
but his work here wasn't very good. it was just whatever.... not god awful but it was short and i wasn't a fan of the concept. 3/10
R- this one i liked. its from the director of
a serbian film
. pretty gory and gross. 8/10
S- on one hand there is some awful acting to start with which is saying something considering i haven't complained about that to this point so you know its bad. on the other hand, i liked the way it ended! 7/10
T- lulz. had to get that
claymation
short in! wasn't too bad, but not great. 6/10
U- i loved this one! this is a great concept and i'd be 100% in for a full movie in this style. 9/10
V- i liked it. had a
cyber punk
type feel. i'd watch if they made a full movie! 7/10
W- didn't like it much. i guess its a little entertaining but i'd prefer it be more focused on something. 3/10
X- this one was really good. obviously trying to make a social commentary. really cringe worth near the end. 8/10
Y- another good one! it was fucking gross when the
pedo is licking up the young boys sweat but he got what was coming to him!
. 8/10
Z- didn't like this one much at all. just really fucking weird but i wouldn't say weird in a good way. 2/10

if i had the rate the movie overall i'd give it a 7/10. definitely entertaining but the movie could have been incredible. i'd have loved to see something like this where you have a majority of the movies be horror related. a lot of the stuff here is entertaining but i'm not sure if any of it is horror. there's plenty of torture porn and other interesting stuff but i feel with some of the talented guys involved we could have gotten some terrifying shorts. maybe someday.... but check this out and keep an open mind!
I liked it, it was a fun game to try to guess the word, i think i won. F was funny as hell and would make some nice gifs, i liked D and Q and a few others i don´t remember the letter of. x was quite good too.

here are the nominees for the Bram Stoker Novel of the Year Award for 2013:

The Trouble with Harry - Hal Bodner
14 - Peter Clines
Bottled Abyss - Benjamin Kane Ethridge
Nightwhere - John Everson
Cemetery Club - JG Faherty
Coronation - Lee F. Jordan
The Drowning Girl - Caitlin R. Kiernan
The Haunted - Bentley Little
Inheritance - Joe McKinney

I am going to make sure to read them, hopefully before june when the award is given.

Watched Theater Bizarre last night. Overall, pretty bad. I skipped the first film too after reading others' reviews of it. But there was one bit that made it worthwhile. "The Accident" was really beautiful. As another said, it didn't seem like it fit in with the others.

Silent House was bad. Although I must say that Olsen's performance in it was really good. The setting felt really claustrophobic and creepy, but I don't think it delivered for me in the end.

I love the horror genre, but sometimes it feels like 95% of it is pure garbage.

Oh it absolutely is. That is what makes finding a gem so rewarding! Not to mention after a while you can appreciate them on single aspect that might make the movie or book worthwhile even though, objectively it was not good.

I pre-ordered my From Beyond and Phantasm 2 blu-rays. Hopefully the From Beyond transfer is the same as the one on the UK version that's been getting all the praise.

I checked out The ABCs of Death today. There's some highs and some lows, but overall I really enjoyed it and I think I'll be picking up the Blu-ray upon release. Definitely worth a rent if you are curious and in the mood for something batshit insane.

Since everything is so short there isn't really much time to get bored but it did drag a bit towards the end. Not because of the quality of the shorts, but because it's a 2 hour movie and you never really get too invested in anything since the stories are so short. It's probably a good idea to watch the movie over a period of 2 or 3 sittings.

Here's a quick breakdown on what I thought of each one:

A is for
Apocalypse
- Pretty clever idea. I wouldn't mind this one being expanded into a slightly longer short.

B is for
Bigfoot
- Not bad, but not really much to it.

C is for
Cycle
- Interesting idea. Definitely would have worked better if it was expanded a bit.

D is for
Dogfight
- My personal favourite. Very stylish and effective. I had seen the director's previous movie
(Dead Girl)
and while I did like it, I thought it was too conflicted with what it wanted to be. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out on whatever his next project is now.

E is for
Exterminate
- Decent but predictable. The director should probably stick with working with Lucky McKee.

F is for
Fart
- Funny, disgusting and insanely bizarre, but honestly I expected a little more from this director.

G is for
Gravity
- Just dumb. Easily the worst of the bunch (except for M). Thankfully it was probably the shortest.

H is for
Hydro-Electric Diffusion
- Pure insanity and creative as hell. I loved it. My 2nd favourite after D. I'd love a whole movie of this.

I is for
Ingrown
- One of the more bleak and serious stories. Very disturbing and it was made even more effective by the two silly entries that book-ended it.

J is for
Jidai-geki
- Pretty simple gag, but it was funny. I liked it.

K is for
Klutz
- I didn't expect to see anything like this. It reminded me of the classic Canadian film board shorts I used to watch growing up, like The Cat Came Back. Pretty fun.

L is for
Libido
- This one was REALLY messed up. I don't even know what to say about it.

M is for
Miscarriage
- Yet another piece of crap from this director. It felt like something he did during his lunch break, while drunk and sleepwalking. I have no idea how this guy has a fanbase or even continues to get work. Thank God it was short.

N is for
Nuptials
- Predictable, but pretty fun in execution.

O is for
Orgasm
- Really cool visuals, but it feels more like an art project or a music video without the music.

P is for
Pressure
- Terrible. I hated everything about this one. If G and M weren't so lazy this one would be the worst.

Q is for
Quack
- I liked the meta concept and thought it was pretty funny, even if the end was very predictable. Much better than this director's work in
V/H/S
.

R is for
Removed
- I have no idea what was going on in this one, but it was so bizarre and the visuals were so striking that it held my interest.

S is for
Speed
- Pretty cool idea. Not bad.

T is for
Toilet
- Like K, I really didn't expect anything like this. Very fun.

U is for
Unearthed
- This was a great idea and well shot. Definitely one of the best ones.

V is for
Vagitus
- Pretty cool and looked surprisingly slick for what I assume was a miniscule budget. I wasn't a fan of the director's previous work
(Altitude)
, but I'd be interested in seeing a longer version of this.

W is for
WTF
- Lives up to the title. Would have had more impact if it wasn't the 2nd meta short in the movie, but still pretty good just for the absurdity of it.

X is for
XXL
- Crazy and disturbing as hell (that music!). One of the better ones.

Y is for
Youngbuck
- This is the director I was waiting for but I ended up being fairly disappointed by it. The director's style was all there, it looked great and the music was amazing but the story didn't work for me. I wish he did something a little crazier like his other shorts,
Z is for
Zetsumetsu
- Another winner from this director. Completely insane and over-the-top. Fans of the
naked woman machine gun/rocket launcher in Yakuza Weapon
are in for a treat with this one.

The Woman in Black's final scene was kind of creepy. Though, I was watching it in the middle of the night, alone, in a dark room.

That scene in sentinel
when the old man is butt naked and just walks out of the darkness(THAT'S ALL HE DOES)
STILL makes my skin crawl. That movie is fucking freaky.

Put me in the camp that liked V/H/S. Yes they completely blew the main storyline and none of the segments were great (except possibly the first one with the googly eyed girl) but they all had something I liked about them and were well worth watching.

I watched this several times a few weeks back, largely to lament my inability to grow a mustache similar to Chris Sarandon's. It's got some good unsettling nudity in general.

also mostly liked VHS. Keeping expectations reasonable, I was entertained--there aren't many anthology flicks with a better than 50% decent content rate.

I thought it was OK, it tries to go all meta, which is kind of an old hat at this point, and at the beginning of the movie you want to scream at your TV: "GET TO THE GODDAMN ASYLUM!" But I did enjoy it after a bit.

WHAT

this is the complete opposite of what's true... are you sure you didn't mix those up?

ge1 was a really fun, well paced, horror flick. ge2 is a mess of a movie, with a bunch of unlikable characters and a dumb "meta" theme.

Oh my, grave encounters 2. What a dumb movie. The first wasn't exactly a masterpiece, but 2 is just pure garbage. So eh, definitely in the 'against' camp for this one.

I got Sinister Blu-Ray today in the mail, and just watched it. Unlike some of my friends, and some people over here, I liked the movie, and had no problem with its ending. Although, it was pretty foreseeable, but I guess that goes for many modern movies, so in that sense it didn't differ from the pack in good or bad. The atmosphere was absolutely marvelous during the first half, but went a bit down later on due to the
overabundance of spook tactics and rather comical ghosts
. That being said, it didn't prevent me from enjoying the movie, and it's excellent soundtrack, which proved that sometimes sound alone is enough to disturb the viewer. The tapes brought some good Session 9 memories to my mind.

I dunno if anyone else noticed it, but there seemed to be a tiny little reference to The Evil Dead, as the main character wore moccasins just like Ash. =)

From the soundtrack: Aghast Manor - Waking Cthulhu
http://youtu.be/prNmQlCFGw0

EDIT: Just ordered the soundtrack from Play.com. It's that good.

Wow, Sinister was really pretty good overall. Very nicely shot, and the soundtrack was unnervingly strange (in a good way). Glad they went the route they did for the ending as well. Makes me happy to see a well-done horror film because it certainly doesn't happen very often. Highly recommend this one.

And it made me creeped-out enough to be weary of turning off all the lights when I went to bed last night. That for me is the sign that the horror has delivered.

The soundtrack surprised me the most, as it included some quite unknown underground artists, like Aghast, who released only one album in 1995; Hexerei Im Zwielicht Der Finsternis.

QP902cZ.jpg

It's the best and most haunting dark ambient album ever made, as far as I'm concerned, and I still own the very limited picture vinyl of it.

There's some rather intriguing anecdotes involving the project... the girls took their artistic names, Nacht & Nebel, from Alain Resnais' concentration camp documentary, Nuit et brouillard (AKA Night and Fog, 1955), and for the recordings they used the microphones of MayheM's old vocalist Dead, who killed himself in 1991.

Here's one of their works, that wasn't in the movie; Enter the Hall of Ice:

EDIT:
Thanks for that music info! I will certainly be checking Hexerei Im Zwielicht Der Finsternis out. Really creepy stuff.

I think it's still available on CD.

EDIT.2: Both of the ladies dwell on occult matters in their private lives as well, and IIRC one of them (Nebel?) was a some kind of advisor for Cradle of Filth during their early days. Nebel is married to Emperor's Samoth by the way, and Nacht used to do artwork for Norwegian black metal bands during the 90's.

Rewatched Cabin in the Woods for the third time last night. It's such a good movie, and knowing Heather Langenkamp worked on some of the monsters just makes it all the better. Heather is an absolute sweetheart.

I can understand why some people love it, but I just didn't feel it. It's not scary at all.

It's a good, fun movie IMO, but a forgettable one.

Caught The Devil's Business a few nights back. Pretty low budget movie I would say. There had to have been only 4 or 5 different sets throughout the movie. The run time was just under 70 minutes and the movie opens with a dialogue between two characters that's nearly 20 minutes long. I don't even know if it's considered horror though, maybe a thriller? Things slowly build up towards the end which is to be expected with the short run time.

A few King, and especially Lynch, vibes sprinkled in.

The Hidden Face (2011) was a really good Spanish thriller/horror movie. I would be spoiling the shit out of it if I said what it was about, but it was pretty much a perfect movie imo. Available on Netflix streaming. Wish I could say more, but going in blind made this one so much better. Cannot recommend this one enough.

I've got The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Re-Animator showing up on Blu-Ray today. And yes, that isn't the shitty Anchor Bay version of Evil Dead 2. I already got stung by that when it first came out. I've kept the case though. Much nicer artwork than the 25th anniversary cover. It'll be this new disc, in the Anchor Bay case, that ends up on my shelves.

I've watched all the Evil Dead movies a stupid number of times, but with the remake incoming and having just rewatched Cabin, I've got that itch for the first time in years. And Re-Animator is just a great film. I love Gordon and Yuzna.

just finished watching sinister (thanks for the $10 free credit sony!), and i feel that it was a real missed opportunity. the first half is pretty great. really creepy and some good horror. but the 2nd half just devolves into mediocre territory. it was never bad-bad, but just kind of whatever. a real shame because if it could've sealed the deal in the 2nd half of the movie it'd really be one of the new classics. as it is, it's good and worth watching but nothing special :(

And I fucking loved it. Seriously I thought it was great. A direct sequel to Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness, and I thought it was a great one at that. It nailed the cold feeling of the south pole, and has some excellent visual moments. Unlike 14 earlier, it did not discuss lovecraft as a person, but rather took place in his world, with Miskatonic University mentioned, and even better, small references to Kadath and Leng inserted innocuously into conversations. It was scary, exciting, and communicated well the idea of a horror that crosses vast realms of time and space...I love it. I am thinking of getting an actual physical copy.

Really really reminiscent of The Thing in parts.

(This thread seems mostly about horror movies, is anyone interested in having a horror book focused thread?)

I checked out Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead a few days ago.

For those unfamiliar, from imdb: A group of horror fans find themselves unwilling participants in a nightmarish role playing game that pays homage to a classic horror film.

First off, I LOVE the premise. It's a fresh and smart way to pay homage to NotLD without doing yet another remake. Unfortunately, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

It's obviously very low budget (imdb lists it as $500,000) but I'm still left wondering where a lot of that money went.
Sid Haig and Courtney Gains's
paychecks, probably. The main cast range from decent to fairly bad, but that's hardly surprising for this type of movie.

The script is also disappointing. If there was ever a movie that needed Scream-level self awareness, this is it. Sadly, it does not. Even once the curtain in the movie is pulled back, it never feels referential enough. The character transplanted into the Ben role is also a complete asshole and remains unlikeable throughout the movie.

The direction is also bizarre. They're constantly speeding up/slowing down footage for no real stylistic reason at all (for example, sped up to have a character walk down a hall faster) and while the majority of effects are practical, they're all "enhanced" by awful CG blood spurts. And the zombies? Well, there's a goth one and a Juggalo one. And yes, they look as ridiculous and as out of place as you'd expect.

Oh, and note to the filmmakers, if you're going to have a surprise cameo from
Bill Hinzman
, you don't need to name the character
"Lieutenant Bill Hinzman"
. Anyone familiar enough with the source to know who he is will get it to begin with. Naming him that just pulled me out out of movie. Not something you want to do to your viewers during the ending...

Edit: Oh, and they even mispronounce "mimesis" in the film itself. If you're going to try to be clever and use such an obscure word for your title, please learn how to pronounce it before you have a character explain it for your audience.

This sounds extremely promising. I'm always on the lookout for Lovecraft-inspired writing, and though I rarely care for most authors' takes on his mythology this appears too interesting pass up. Thanks for the review.

My thoughts on the book-focused thread: I'd be very happy to see this become a catch-all horror culture thread, as the title suggests. It's not like it moves fast enough that adding some book discussion is going to cause a significant derailment, and I'm always happy to see it bumped up my subscription list with new posts even if I rarely have time to contribute.

Speaking of which, I (finally) managed to see Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters a couple of nights ago. It was a lot of fun, and I'm glad I didn't wait for the BD release.

It had a distinctly Van Helsing vibe, though perhaps a shade less meat in terms of characters and plot. There are some great kill scenes and some fun gags, and if you enjoy horror flavoured action-comedy, it's a no-brainer. It's light on the horror though, so don't expect Army of Darkness; the film is really just an excellent excuse to let Hawkeye and Gemma Arterton team up and kill a bunch of super-powered monster women. That said, the film does an excellent job of laying the foundation for a rich mythology, and I hope there are sequels which build on the idea.

The 3D was decent. Handful of amusing effects, otherwise easy to forget. I didn't feel like it obscured the action, so while not impressive it wasn't the least bit obtrusive. This is the first 3D movie I've seen since the HFR version of The Hobbit, and while watching that film converted me from a 3D skeptic to a zealous believer in the effect as a legitimate cinematic tool, Hansel and Gretel reminded me why I can take it or leave it the rest of the time.

A large part of the reason I enjoy Lovecraft is his writing style and the philosophy behind his horror, so I find modern mythos stories often miss the point when they focus solely on the monsters.

I have a decent sized backlog of books at the moment, but while I'm not in need of suggestions I'm always happy to cherry-pick when they pop up. I've been meaning to sample Thomas Ligotti's stuff for ages so that's next on my list; still trying to get into Clark Ashton Smith although his work isn't clicking with me like I thought it would, and I have a ridiculous amount of material courtesy of Project Gutenburg.

So it's just the original score? That's a shame. Would have been great for Aghast to get more exposure.
