Cabin Fever 2 happened last night. Amazing. Bummed I waited this long to watch it

Is this a common opinion? I've never really heard anything about 2, good or bad. I just presumed it wasn't worth my time. This is the first time it's even seemed possible that it might be good.

It's kind of like if John Waters directed The Breakfast Club. Worth a watch, IMO.

I watched Sinister last night. It was pretty good. Nice to see Hawk getting some work. I thought it got a bit convoluted near the end but definitely held together better than Insidious.

I also watched "The Raven" but didn't finish it. (I fell asleep). So far it seems like "Saw: The 1800s" which isn't a bad thing considering the source material is the original inspiration for torture porn anyway.

I remember being disappointed with Cabin Fever 2. I haven't seen it since close to release, but it felt to be a more standard horror movie (lacking the black humor of the original). I should check it out again; I love the first CF, maybe the second will be better for me this time around.

It's the closest thing Ti West has even done to being a good movie (in my opinion), even if he did request his name be removed from it after the producers did extensive re-shoots and re-edited it.

It's just a silly splatter movie. Don't take it seriously and it's pretty gross and fun.

Hey first time in the thread but was thinking about horror movies the last couple of days. And I have realized I don't watch them much anymore.
Sure it might be because I am married with three kids, and my wife doesn't enjoy feeling scared. I have tried to rationalize that a movie that can force you to feel any emotion is a good experience. :) It hasn't worked.
And I used to watch horror movies by myself plenty when younger.

But now.... I just don't.
I have seen a couple over the last year. But that's it.

I think I have turned into a wimp when it comes to the style of current horror movies. Honest. Sad to say.
But I grew up with Jason, Michael and Freddy. And I can handle a big guy chasing hot girls with a chainsaw just fine. But these Japan influenced horror movies actually scare me.
And they scare me enough that I have stayed away.

So I'm curious what is out there that is more along the lines of traditional horror/gore and less possessed girl twisted into a pretzel?

I'm not saying I'm a complete wimp now. I just find that I don't enjoy everything that is out there. I have seen the first paranormal activity, I watched it alone while the family was away. I heard every noise in the house for days. Haha.

So you're basically looking for modern day slashers? Here's a couple off the top of my head. Not all slashers, but I think you'll enjoy them. I don't know how far back to go so you've probably seen some of these.

The Cabin in the Woods is a must see. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

Feast. Amazing monster splatter comedy. The 2 sequels are very low budget and bizarre so most don't like them, but I did.

The Collector is great. It's like a mix between a slasher and Saw. I haven't seen the sequel, The Collection yet though, so I can't vouch for that one.

Dead Snow. If you don't mind subtitles, this zombie splatter comedy is a blast.

Drag Me to Hell. Splatter comedy.

Grindhouse: Planet Terror and Death Proof. PT is a zombie movie and DP is a car slasher.

Hatchet & Hatchet II. Decent low-budget Friday the 13th ripoffs.

Mother's Day. It's a remake but it really has almost nothing to do with the original. Home invasion movie.

My Bloody Valentine 3D. Remake of an 80s slasher, but superior to the original.

Piranha. Another remake that's superior to the original. Avoid the sequel, 3DD.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 remake. It's not as creepy as the original but closer to a normal slasher so I think you'll like it if you haven't seen it.

Friday the 13th remake. Very underrated and perfect nipple placement.

Trick 'r Treat. Great anthology film.

REC 1-3. Spanish zombie flicks. Opinions are split on #3, but I thought it was a lot of fun.

The Loved Ones. Fantastic Aussie flick, very gruesome.

Fahter's Day (Troma). Just because I want to hear more opinions on it. Craziest movie ever.

I personally wouldn't categorize those kind of somewhat cheesy slasher flicks as real horror (well, excluding the original Halloween), more like teen horror (F13) or horror comedy (NoES), Perhaps that's why you don't enjoy the more serious side side of the genre, as you're not that familiar with it? When I was a kid, I enjoyed most those that scared or disturbed me the most, like The Evil Dead, Amityville II: The Possession, The Howling, The Thing... and I still do, but unfortunately they're quite rare nowadays. The last were [REC] and The Poughkeepsie Tapes.

So, if they're not to your liking, just stick with the kind you like. There's a plenty of them around, although most of them aren't probably as funny as the old ones. Can't think of any examples right now, as it's not really a side of the genre I'd follow closely.

P.S. Just noticed, that your post was number 666. Fitting. ;)

REC 1-3. Spanish zombie flicks. Opinions are split on #3, but I thought it was a lot of fun.

Post number couldnt have been planned better.

Thanks for the replies.

That list is nice Thirsty. I have actually seen about 80% of that list. One personal fave was Dark Snow. Loved that.
Oh and Cabin in the Woods was excellent!
I haven't checked out Rec yet but I have seen it on Netflix so maybe I will start there.
But looks like I still do watch a decent amount of horror movies. Just seems that everything that comes out lately is about exercism and has a picture of a twisted up girl on the poster.

I wish Chernobyl Diaries would have turned out better. The setting was great.

Tell me about it. I find exorcism movies a complete bore because they hardly do anything original. If you liked Dark Snow I think you're in for a treat with REC 3.

I'll try to think of some more obscure choices (I mostly just recommended what I have in my blu-ray collection because I have a terrible memory) but it sounds like we're both on the same page when it comes to what we're looking for, so I'm sure I can come up with some more stuff you'll like.

Have you tried any of the Japanese splatter movies like Tokyo Gore Police and Machine Girl? There's tons of those.

It took me a couple of days but I got through Grave Encounters 2 and REC 3

I enjoyed Grave Encounters 2. It was a little slow to start but it did the whole meta fiction thing pretty well.

REC 3 however... I have such mixed feelings. As a huge fan of the first two, I wasn't so much put off by the shift to a cinematic view of the movie as I was the horror comedy style they went for in this one. It almost felt like a crappy version of an Evil Dead movie at times. Which would be okay if you can completely separate what you remember from the first two movies.

That's pretty much why I haven't even wanted to see it. I don't want to tarnish the image I have of the first two. Somehow I'm not surprised, that Jaume Balaguero isn't involved with the 3rd.

Just watched Grave Encounters 2. Not particularly scary, but I had a lot of fun with it. Not as bad as reviews had made it out to be. I loved how bizarre things ended up by the end.

I am honored that you remember my thread! I thought it got lost in time. I put a lot of work in that OP.

Great thread with a lot of quality work put into it. I'd hate to see it go to waste.

I'm definitely going to use it when I have some literature to discuss. I'll probably be diving into this big-ass Lovecraft collection I recently bought soon.

I'm not sure why this one picked up so fast while that didn't. Perhaps it was a bit too ambitious with so much information on books and movies?

Alone With Her starts off slow, but has a great finish. Just an overall creepy film.

I'm going to sit down and watch my Re-Animator Blu-Ray after I pop some corn. I've seen the film many times before, but this'll be my first time in HD with a good surround sound system. To honour this moment, I share with you (and remind some of you of) 'Move Your Dead Bones' by Dr Re-Animator.

Any impressions on American Mary? I see good reviews for it, hope its good.

I watched it last night on bigpond movies (Australia, streaming) and it was a fantastic horror movie, I really felt creeped out at some of the characters in the film, was pretty gory and thoroughly enjoyable. The lead character was quite interesting as was her journey into the darker topics of the film. Loved it, creepy as.

Highly recommended.

Australian PAL DVD/Stream release suffered from the wrong aspect ratio and looked pretty terrible.

I've picked up the Puppet Master box set for like 5 dollars the other day and I've been going through the series since I haven't seen them in years.

I've finished the first five movies so far and 1-3 were pretty good (despite the huge continuity error in 3). However, 4 and 5 took a turn for the full on stupid in typical horror franchise ruining fashion.

I fear for the rest of the series. Not as in "being afraid" like a good horror movie but fearing how much more stupid these films could be.

Watched both of the Grave Encounters movies since they have been discussed so much on this thread.

I actually prefer the second one if you can make it through the trying first half hour. I would recommend jumping directly to the second film and if you like it check out the original. I normally am pretty obssesive about watching things in sequential order but the way these are set up it's unnecessary.

I need to get around to watch Cabin In The Woods again, maybe I could get it in time for my double free period tomorrow.
And Mama looks like a blast, but I've heard a few bad things.
and omg evildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildeadevildead soon

A good friend of mine, whose opinion I very much trust on these things has seen it, and had some very glowing things to say. I am very optimistic.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So what good horror movies are out there? I've watched quite a ton, and majority of them are cheese. The only ones I (briefly) got scared at are:

- Ju-on: The Grudge (JP)
- One Missed Call (KR)
- Shutter (TH)
- Sigaw (PH)
- The Exorcist
- The Changeling (more atmospheric creepy than actually scary)
- Sinister
- Insidious
- Night of the Living Dead

I did watch Ring (JP) recently though, not as scary though.

A Tale of Two Sisters. Especially if you're a fan of Asian horror, it's the best there is in my opinion.

I find it annoying that All the Boys Love Mandy Lane has yet to be released in the United States (on video, and maybe in theaters?) even though it is actually pretty damn awesome all around: looks great, sounds great, has a neat twisted ending, and stars Amber Heard to top it all off. I don't get it, because as a slasher it should at minimum be a hit well before you consider the fact that it's actually a good movie too.

It´s getting a small theatrical release on the US this year and it will also be available on VOD on the same day.

Just watched it! Pretty good. Main character was really intriguing, and it was cool seeing her immersed into the darkness. Felt the direction could have been a bit better. Some of the really creepy stuff felt like it was revealed too early, and some emotional moments seemed a little off. Overall though I really enjoyed it.

I rewatched John Dies at the End again this week. It's still a great film, somewhat hurt by some bad effects work in the last third, I'd still recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Bubba Ho Tep or Phantasm though. It's great seeing Coscarelli's work hasn't lost any of the energy or vibrance that he had in his youth. There aren't many directors you can say that about.

This topic seems pretty hardcore so I'm not sure if many will care but....here's a Carrie "Trailer Tease" : http://www.etonline.com/movies/132453_Carrie_Trailer_Teaser/index.html

Yes...it's a teaser of a trailer. Full length should be up later today and I'm guessing that someone will make a topic when it is up.

I wasn't too upset that they are remaking this but this small teaser confirms my fears...Chloe Moretz can't fucking act and was likely hired because she has a fucking machine behind her. Yes it's only like 10 seconds but her line delivery is as bad as it is in the Kick Ass 2 trailers.

Recently watched My Little Eye. I saw this back in highschool but didn't really remember much about it. When I saw it on netflix a few days ago I decided what the hell. It's like a satire on reality tv culture, specifically The Real World (Came out in the early 2000's when that would have been more relevant). Starts out creepy enough but descends pretty quickly. Bradley Cooper has a fun appearance.

Also, maybe not particularly "horror", but I've been going through Twilight Zone on netflix (It doesn't have season 4 for some reason). I've seen a lot of episodes during the New Years marathons they have but I've caught quite a few new gems as well.

I saw My Little Eye at the cinema and remember not being too impressed. I've not seen it since then. I have vague memories of finding many of the hidden camera locations completely implausible, and being really distracted by the red power ranger from light speed rescue (one of the most hilariously bad flavours of power rangers) being one of the main characters.

I never placed Bradley Cooper though until just know. It's like Donnie Darko and Seth Rogan all over again. I feel like my memories have been hacked.

And The Twilight Zone is legit, and any horror fan that doesn't respect and love it can get the heck out of this thread, imho ;)

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and

5 dollars? What a steal! They originally sold that thing for $100 smackers. What continuity error do you speak of?

In Puppet Master 1 Toulon kills himself in 1939. In Puppet Master 3, which is a prequel it takes place in 1941 nazi germany and Toulon is still alive.

I'm catching the Evil Dead remake this afternoon. Will post impressions later.

Just watched Kill List with my girlfriend, and we both liked it. I kinda liked how many things were left open for interpretation, everything doesn't need to be explained like a parent would to a child; eg. the Saw movies' end recaps. It was refreshingly gruesome as well.

So I watched the new Evil Dead and I liked it overall. I'd give it a solid B+. It's lacking a bit in surprise and originality (though it does have some of both) but there wasn't really anything wrong with it. I like the central concept of why they are isolated and why they don't just instantly leave when shits starts going crazy... it was a pretty clever justification.

Even though they never mentioned cell phones, I can believe that they'd all have left them behind so that Mia couldn't contact anyone if things got bad.

Some great gore gags too.

Stay all the way to the very end of the credits for a couple of nice little touches too. It won't be hard, the credits are relatively short.

Oh, some people in the row in front of us started talking half way through. Two guys next to them yelled at them to 'shut the fuck up' and the reply they got was 'That's rude. It's only a movie'. Fortunately they did shut up after that, and I was sure to thank the two guys afterwards to let them know that it was appreciated.

No GAFer impressions on The Lords of Salem? I just saw a early matinee showing today. I loved it. Such a fan service for 70's occult movie buffs. If this is truly his last horror film he went out with a bang. I was really impressed with Sheri Moon's performance as well.

debating whether to watch The Innkeepers or Sinister.

Either worth watching?

Also, has anyone seen The ABC’s of Death?

I'm a huge fan of horror anthologies so I figured it might be worth checking out.

Sinister was really good, and I usually hate those kinds of movies. I keep forgetting to post my impressions.

There's some impressions for ABCs of death from myself and others a few pages back. I'd link it for you but I'm not on a computer. Some shorts are a miss, but overall I really enjoyed iy and will be getting the blu-ray when it's released.

Both are worth a watch IMO. Sinister is the better movie but Innkeepers is at least entertaining and it's on Netflix so why not give it a watch? Won't cost you anything.

Anyone else seen the Maniac remake yet? It was pretty damn good, leaps and bounds better than the original. The original is a classic, but this remake trumps it in every category. Damn fine remake.
