Horror-GAF |OT|

I'm here on a cloudy drizzling day, in my horror memorabilia adorned theater room, listening to the Creepshow soundtrack and it's got me thinking.

What was the last contemporary horror film that had a truly memorable soundtrack? Something that's as villainous, menacing, sinister as the evil in the film it's playing in? Something that sticks with you in that dreadful, awful, awesome way.

It Follows had a great soundtrack, and it fit the film perfectly. It gave me a Carpenter vibe (I know that gets thrown around a lot today).

I watched Jeeper's Creepers the other night, and one thing I noticed was how bland the music was. It was that generic late 90's-00's horror soundtrack that was everywhere. That period, in general, wasn't very kind to horror movies. There were still some gems though, like Audition, The Blair Witch Project, and The Descent.

It Follows did have a great soundtrack, though a liiiittle bit at times distracting since it felt like I was playing Fez.

Just watched Grave Encounters cause eh why not.

That was pretty damn boring and typical, gonna go back to watching Korean thriller movies.

They already mentioned It Follows, but I'd also add in Under the Skin, the remake of Maniac, and, most recently, The Neon Demon.

Ooooh, I forgot about Maniac. I need to give it a rewatch sometime soon, it really impressed me when I saw it a couple of horrorthons ago. I believe I went as far as to say that it was the greatest horror remake since The Fly. I might have been hitting the hyperbole bottle that night, but that title doesn't have much competition.

Jeez and I remember when the original came out, in my city you had to book tickets days in advance.

Thoughts on the movie? Tempted to go myself

The marketing only changed recently. Also, the atmosphere changed for film and you're only going to see huge Thursday turnouts for blockbuster franchises. Also, it depends a lot on your location. I live in NY and can guarantee you that my theater will be packed all weekend.

Damn it, Yes! How could I forget Neon Demon, I listen to it a few times every week, ha.

I'll have to check out UtS and Maniac remake. Thanks.

Is there a good Horrorwebsite/Blog with Essays or thinkpieces that are worth reading?

Read a good article on the racial points of Candyman (Not that I didnt noticed those by myself, still was an interesting read), and I want more of those.

well the seats filled in a bit more closer to start and as for the film it really impressed me got your standard jump scare tropes but after the first 30 or so mins it kicks in and becomes one of the most intense horror films Ive seen in a long time

hey all, new guy here looking to join in as I love a good horror (not so keen on body horror like human centipede or tusk, the thought of those films makes me feel sick).

Lights Out is going to leave cinemas this week in Dublin, so want to catch it today while I still can with my girl (we love horrors, our first date was going back to mine and watching the old and new versions of the Woman in Black, one after the other). Has anyone seen it yet, does anybody recommend it?

I like the sound of that.

Good to hear as after the second blair witch, it looked like this franchise was dead. Do you think this is going to be a one off or does the ending suggest that they will make another one?

personally id love to see another even if it was a backstory for Rustin parr etc there is a really rich mythos and universe to be explored

Cheers for bringing up that Maniac remake, I hadn't heard of it before but it looks super rad

Ordered that, Excision (recommended from a friend), and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (I've never seen....RE7 trailer has me wanting to see it though haha)

....and The Guest and You're Next, looked up The Guest OST and this rules

Vengeance on The Guest OST....oh man.

Also, Excision is one of my favorite movies of all time. Sorry for basically triple post.

The reviews for Blair Witch aren't too kind, hopefully you guys can give some more positive impressions.

Yeah, but horror reviews are mostly trash. "Martyrs" has a lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes than "Insidious", which just makes me sad.

I actually saw it tonight. It's...pretty good. There's a lot of ways in which it simply wasn't ever going to be possible for it to match the original - the viral marketing, the novelty of "found footage", the unexpected nature of the ending, etc.

It's a well-paced found footage film in which the characters mostly behave like rational human beings and which has some genuinely clever, intense bits. There's some other ways in which the film doesn't really offer sufficient payoff for some of the promises it implicitly makes. It's also a little too reliant on non-diagetic loud noises to aid in meaningless jump scares (of the "someone else in the group touches a character on the shoulder" variety).

Some of the early marketing and reviews probably oversold it a little (like the ones that talk about it "redefining horror for a new generation" or whatever). It's not a revolution like Blair Witch was, but it's solidly and intelligently made.

Saw Lights Out last night, really glad I got to see it before it left cinemas. Really solid horror film, story was good enough as well as the acting (particularly liked stoner rock dude as the sage of wisdom).

Best thing about the movies were the scares. They were jump scares but you knew they were coming because of the light effect. One scene where she sees the monster then the light comes on. You know since its a neon sign that the light will eventually go out and the monster will appear again but it's the suspense and the knowing that make the scares even better.

You know, it's funny. I haven't seen the film yet, but it's almost like I'm preparing myself for a roller coaster instead of a movie. I haven't really even thought about the plot, I'm just hoping for a good use of the lighting gimmick. It's a fun gimmick.

It's a great gimmick, don't think it's a great enough gimmick for a sequel though.

On another note, it's interesting to see all these horrors coming out about depression and people's reactions to it. Films like The Invitation, The Babadook, and Lights Out are exploring depression as a horror topic in a smart way that I am enjoying.

Blair Witch is definitely one of the more mixed bag horror movies I've seen recently, but I really enjoyed it. For the sake of discussion though, it seems important to talk about this movie in a three act structure versus as a whole movie.

The first act is fine. It's logical, gives enough depth to the characters, and sets up the found footage idea in a pretty decent way. Kinda boring, but it does its job well enough.

Second act is honestly kinda not good. There's a twist that feels really out of place within the content of the film, there are really cheap jump scares that just don't work well, but it does do
the weird passage of time thing kinda okay

Third act is bonkers and saved the film for me, loved every second of it and actually moved the film from a 5/10 to a 7/10 for me. Shows a bit too much but still. I guess the thing is the whole film is very well done for a found footage movie, but it doesn't become its own thing until the final act and that's when it shines.

I'll see it again this weekend now that it's out for real, but when I saw it at a preview screening I came out pretty lukewarm on it.

Saw Blair Witch. It's aight.
i know she plays tricks on you but dude all you had to do was not turn around goddamn

Ha i feel like this advice applies to a LOT of horror films.

Going to see Don't Breathe this weekend, i heard it's less a horror than a thriller. Still really want to see it though!

Okay, so after asking about it a couple of pages back and getting a split opinion, I went and watched The Conjuring.

It wasn't as idiotic as Insidious but I certainly wouldn't say it's scary. I did like how it was a little more realistic and since it was a period piece, I didn't have to suffer though a stupid scene of them looking up ancient witch symbols on Google.

I guess as far as big studio LOUD NOISES movies go, it's one of the better ones but meh, it's still really, really bland. None of the scares are surprises because they telegraph everything before it happens with LOUD MUSIC and LONG SHOTS OF SHADOWS AND DARKNESS.

Overall, just boring. And I don't see what the big deal about the doll is. How did that thing get 2 spinoff movies? Just because it's ugly? Yeesh.

Yeah, I liked the conjuring but it wasn't an amazing film. Just decent and a good afternoon, have no desire to rewatch it though.

Just saw Don't Breathe, I really liked the film. The twist halfway through the film was great, as I never expected it. Didn't love the ending, a bit too tied up too nicely for my liking.

Anyway, I'd recommend it to anyone on the fence.

Seed Of Chucky was good, just a little better than Bride IMO

Curse was a lot of fun too, the last 15min really redeemed most of what I didn't like about it! Now the wait for Chucky 7 begins

yeah, saw it. I thought it was a good blend between horror and thriller. Did not like the ending, but really liked everything else!

Not a lot of fat in this movie. It's very clear and concise in what it's trying to accomplish. Will it be remembered fondly? Not sure. But it does try and it succeeds in telling an entertaining story.
