How would you feel about the NX being a handheld?

Thought we might as well get this out the way. As with the other thread, the suggestion is that the NX will be less powerful than the Wii U, now either Nintendo are doing something like the Wii (why it would be weaker am not sure since the screen is the main cost on the Wii U) or its a handheld?

For me I'd be very happy (hybrid or no hybrid) - 3DS has been great and I think Nintendo can continue to work with third parties on handheld and are limited in what they can do on console. Not to mention the issue of coming out mid-gen if its a console replacement. The 3DS began a natural change - handheld versions taking the spot from console versions - not just by being 3D but the rise in mobile has meant Nintendo are not competing for the game on the go and quick game crowd to the same degree any more, instead having to basically offer console offerings on their handheld.

I get the feeling some are looking for a PS4 from them (am not sure why, since most have upgraded themselves and for them the 3DS is capable let alone the Wii U for 80% of their games) so I wondered - would people be disappointed by this or like me are people looking for where Nintendo go next with their handheld systems?

A Nintendo Vita with the strength of a Wii U would be delicious if they could lock down third party support for it.

I might actually be interested in Splatoon on a handheld.

There's pretty much no way the next console from Nintendo will be weaker than the Wii U, not sure why people got worried by that speculation thread.
Not sure if NX itself is a handheld, they never clarified we just assumed it would be a home console. The 3DS kind of need to go, it's getting pretty old and it's hard to look at.

I think it being a handheld is vastly more likely than it being a home console to be honest, multiple format hardware releases notwithstanding.

Being capable of running popular middleware engines like unity or Unreal would vastly increase its likelihood of getting third party support.

I'm expecting a handheld but I'm hoping that they still provide us with another console that is great for local multiplayer. Nintendo consoles are really the best at that, and it would be bad if that were to truly die off.

I expect it to be a phone in all but name. Probably with a ton of proprietary connectors but still a handheld capacitive 4-6 inch device. Maybe it will slot into a larger case to connect to a tv. :P

tbh, I would rather buy a nintendo handheld than a nintendo console, just because I think the better games last and the generation before (for nintendo) were on the handheld.

As long as they keep dual screens.
Yes! They can de-emphasize the bottom touch screen more by keeping it smaller and lower res (3DS already started doing this versus DS) but I don't want to lose the versatility and convenience it brings to core games like Monster Hunter, Zelda, Castlevania, etc. Plus it's necessary for backwards compatibility.

I hope any console NX variant also sticks a small/low res touchscreen on the controller for these reasons. Wii U gamepad was an expensive mistake in hindsight but the concept could be retained and integrated much more efficiently without breaking the bank.

Well, it will be, but it won't just be a handheld.

Still, 3DS is well on course to need a replacement next year, so NX being purely handheld wouldn't be too bad.

It's a console and a handheld.

Looking forward to the specs. Curious as to how it docks.

There probably won't be any docking. NX will likely be separate pieces of hardware with a shared library.

I will be proud with myself for not buying New 3DS even though my circle pad cap is broken and there are dead pixels on the screen.
Hopefully it has b/c.

Software software software. I'm not worried about specs or even what it is. If it collects dust because of horrible support it will have problems.

Will people stop with this. Such a device would be underpowered, over priced, and sell horridly.

The former two are a given with Nintendo hardware and the latter seems very likely considering the train Sony is running with the PS4. Most people just don't need a new console right now so it'll be on those people that want Nintendo games to support that thing.

No issues here. My Vita and 3DS get a lot of use by both my wife and myself. I have no bias against handheld gaming systems as long as the system itself is comfortable to hold, has ergonomically excellent button and stick layout and isn't gimped in terms of software library.

I'd be fine with as long as they fix the horrible placement of the D-pad! Seriously, this is destroying some of my Virtual Console enjoyment.

Just copy the Vita's sticks and button layout.

Matt stated "It's not" in the other thread that asked if the NX was weaker than the Wii U, so it's going to either be a powerful portable (likely), or that it at least has an non-portable counterpart.

I'd love a Nintendo portable with something like a wireless hdmi dongle that could also cast to your TV.

Heck, at this point I'd prefer it over whatever console hardware they're likely to commit to.

I'm expecting a handheld, and I'm fine with it. I'd probably be less fine if I wasted money and traded my 3DS for a New 3DS though.

Well for one, I mean moreso than the Wii U, ie $400 for weaker hardware. Also do you really think Nintendo is striving to be the secondary console? Didn't Iwata say they can't continue if they don't win?

Just a handheld? Meh. I think there are some great titles on the 3DS but approximately 0.05% of my gaming time is solitary. My wife loves to watch and offer suggestions about strategy and puzzle-solving, so if I can't connect an HDMI cable I won't bother with another Nintendo handheld.

The vita is the best handheld hardware of all time but its library of games is mostly stuff I'm not interested in or amazing indie games I've already played on pc. So a Nintendo handheld around that power with their incredible first party lineup would pretty much be a dream to me. I have a feeling it's not gonna be that, but I'm willing to dream until next year

I feel that it would be a very smart move on Nintendo's part. Their Handhelds always have sold a lot and software on them has consistently been getting better and better. The 3DS for example has games I could picture being fantastic Wii U titles for example (KI: Uprising and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon).

If the handheld is on the power level of the Vita or on-pair with the Wii U, it could work out really well; Nintendo's focus on art-style and effects can go a very long way in making the visuals pop off the handhelds screen.

There is a reason why games like Tearaway, Guacamelee and Fez look amazing on the Vita; the color of those games is fantastic and very 'Nintendo' like.

I was too negative regarding it the NX is weaker then Wii U thread....but looking at things more rationally, I could see the NX being on the power level of the Vita, which works well considering how it is a massive step up from the 3DS.

I say that due to how the power-level cycle of Nintendo's handhelds are always a step up but not completely:
-GB: Not as powerful as the NES but close enough to match its 'look'
-GBC: In-between a NES ('look') and SNES (vivid color)
-GBA: A literal SNES but some parts down-graded (Sound Chip for example)
-DS: In-between a N64 and a GC (Mario 64 DS is a great example of this; it looks better then the original game but it still looks 'dated' if that makes since)
-3DS: In-between a GC and a Wii

So, the NX being in-between a Vita and Wii U matches this cycle of hardware quite well honestly.

I have a hard time picturing them not repeating the Wii U situation. Unless they somehow manage to win back the lost Wii audience (in which case they can stay go for all I care because whatever interests those isn't really going to be fun for me), they're going to be playing second fiddle.
If they don't, then they'll at best be able to rival the PS4/XB1 hardware meaning they might receive multiplats, but that would also be at a point where nearly everyone who's interested in a current gen console will already have one.
