I feel like my love for Nintendo games is fading

Nintendo and affiliated companies/devs (like Game Freak) are basically the only reasons I still play video games.

I see no ambition in modern Nintendo games, no willing to push the boundaries like they used to back in the NES/SNES/N64 days (this really was Nintendo's golden era imo).
.

The entire premise of their consoles for this new gen and last gen has been risk.

No seriously, motion controls, touch screens . They made it work, the took chances and it allowed them expand on how they could do the things they did in their games.

And what do you mean ambition, please explain.

Go head.

I'm a weird kind of video game aficionado. I love gaming but today's standards seem to be revolved around particle effects, anti-aliasing, resolution, fps, etc., and less focused on the fun aspect of the game. I'm not saying that those things aren't particularly great to have in games, but they seem to be the main focus today, and it seems games that don't concentrate on said characteristics are immediately trash talked.

You've got games like Madden who I've read online that some are saying is going to "Kill" Nintendo because of the next gen effects such as "individual blades of grass" and I'm just like "wow, really?" Xbox One and PS4 games WILL look AMAZING, but it's not all about visuals, why do people always think this is the case.

By far I'm not a "Nintendo-only" consumer. I owned a 360 for a few years, and still have my PS3 since 2008. I play games such as L4D, Fable2, Gears of War, TLOU, Heavy Rain, Infamous, God of War, GTA, Fallout, to name a few. Granted some of these are exclusives to a particular platform, but there are only a few gems in those categories for me. Everything else that's good can be purchased for either PS3 or 360, it comes down to whatever platform you prefer to play that game on. Meanwhile, Nintendo exclusives that are gems are many, granted they re-use their characters ALOT, but they use them in different types of games. But among Nintendo IP-based games, there are those 3rd party developed exclusives too such as Xenoblade Chronicles, Tasunoko vs. Capcom, The Last Story, No More Heroes 2, Red Steel 2, Monster Hunter Tri, just to name a few. Then there's the plethora of Nintendo IP-based games that are great like DKC, Metroid Prime, Galaxy 1 and 2, Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Mario Party, I mean the list goes on.

I get that some people have grown tired of Nintendo's style, and not to be disrespectful but I think age has to do with it. Since the first Playstation came out I knew there was a huge distinction between that machine and Nintendo's machine because I have been able to see that non-Nintendo machines would be the machines to go to for more adult themed games, it's sad to say, but that's just the case. But at the same time, Nintendo's consoles fill that void of fun and replayability that we all search for in games.

If anyone says fck Nintendo, or fck Sony, or fck Microsoft or that they are sick and tired of their console or games, this is just a person who has fallen victim to this new generation of gamers who thinks it's their mission to stick to one of the "factions" and trash talk the others. A gamer like myself who has experienced games and their amazing changes since the 80s appreciates every game for what it is, REGARDLESS of my opinion to if I like that game/series or not. Just because I'm not a FPS enthusiast and give in to every iteration of the game doesn't mean I think COD is crap, it's just not my kind of game, it doesn't entertain me, I get bored easily, BUT, it's still an AMAZING game in that it receives the attention it gets worldwide.

It didn't though. They replaced button presses with swatting motions on one, it didn't enhance the gameplay and often hindered it to the point it's uses were limited. Then they make a "DS Home Edition" using an existing, already established, 2 screen set up and it's falling down on its face.

There is absolutely no reason to consider emulation piracy.

And honestly I find this mentality quite harmful.

emulation isnt necessarily piracy but rom downloads are. and if you have the emulator up and running downloading roms isnt a big step.

in your opinion maybe. there are plenty of people that think otherwise as sales indicate.

sure the wiiu wasnt revolutionary enough but the comment the poster Shion made is just not reflecting reality

I know they're not all directly N-developed, but 3DS games like Mario 3D Land, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Luigi's Mansion have rekindled my long dormant Nintendo love.

It seems that your lack of time is killing your love for games in general, not just nintendo's

This sums up my life :/

I never thought I'd get old enough to not have time to wind down with a great game. In truth skyward sword is the only game outside of of gow3, mgs4, and demon souls that I have played in thr last 3 years. I spend time on ios gaming or reading the many threads on this forum versus actual console gaming play time.

A part of me wanted the WW special edition which would require a wii u purchase. But the reality of taking the last 2 years to get though skyward sword (currently on last dungeon)...I can just imagine how long WW HD would
Take :/. A job, a part time personal business, and a wife = i only make time for console gaming on a quarterly basis :(.

And this thread is a sad reminder of growing up.

While I do think Nintendo's best games are behind them, I still very much love Nintendo and my love for them has never waned. I do always hope they still have those 90's masterpieces in them, when the whole industry was looking at Nintendo to show them how it's done. I feel the rest of the world has finally caught up to Nintendo in terms of ideas and creativity (though not gameplay) which is why Nintendo isn't quite the indestructable force it used to be.

I have confidence Nintendo still has it in them to come up with a few new ip's to rival their best ones and at the same time give us great new entries in our favorite series.

I agree with you OP.

Outside of Twilight Princess, Galaxy and MKWii, it feels like Nintendo has lost their magic.

I have to put a lot of the blame on Iwata as I feel he has very shortsighted thinking and is all about the quick money over anything else.

rom downloads are
So is illegally downloading PC games.

To act like emulation is piracy or anywhere near piracy, is like acting like PC gaming itself is piracy.
It's just as easy to pirate Nintendo DS games or PSP games on their original systems.

All emulators do is make games compatible with different systems.

All correct, but I just want to point out that the original post was closer to piracy than what you guys seem to be talking about:

If you have a good PC you can buy a copy and run it in Dolphin.

To play it in Dolphin, he would also need to buy a Wii and mod it so he can back up his games. Merely buying a copy of the game isn't enough, as that implies you'll gain the backup from elsewhere.

Not liking emulators is a bit weird though. They are totally fine.

Xenoblade is first-party, not third-party. Monolithsoft is a first-party Nintendo dev.

yeah no...

So do I need to reverse image search to find out who these characters are? And how many do Nintendo own?

Wii Fit trainer? I asked for meaningful mascots.

Oh Ike? My bad. He's just a reskinned Roy essentially. He's not particularly relevant especially for such an old and niche series.

1. I pointed out that you made a wrong statement. olimar is not the latest character that appeared in Brawl. Ike is. And he is not a reskinned Roy he is a completely different character within the Fire Emblem Series.
2. All those IPs are owned by nintendo. They are first party published games funded by Nintendo and partly developed by Nintendo. You not knowing them just makes your argument invalid. You just know about a few releases and you complain that they dont release stuff which is wrong.
3. So you are making an argument that at the end of the day games that dont sell dont count and if they sell they dont count because they are established franchises... lol?
4. Funny how you single out Wii Fit Trainer as irrelevant. That series is at 40 million units sold at a MSRP of 90$. She is returning in the WiiU sequel and is going to be featured in the next Smash bros (which btw was the reason i included her).

Lets look at your post again

Pretty much, yeah.

They used to take risks. Their software is so predictable and safe now.

They are still afraid of the internet. Their biggest games would still control just fine on a traditional controller. If you look at the Brawl roster, the newest character is Captain Olimar from 12 years ago. There hasn't been any new meaning mascots, either.

1. They dont take risk -> wrong they are putting out new IP despite them knowing that it will not sell. They originally wanted to make W101 as a nintendo collaboration game but decided to give the other idea a go (making a fully new IP). Not taking risks?
2. Predictable and safe-> I dont see games like Sin and Punishment, Wonderful 101, Rhythm Heaven, Pushmo, Endless Ocean, Wii Sports etc. being so predictable and safe at all.
3. Games will control fine on a traditional controller-> yes but whats the point of Wii Sports, Wii Fit with a traditional controller.
4. Brawl Roster argument was already proven dead wrong.

Xenoblade is first-party, not third-party. Monolithsoft is a first-party Nintendo dev.

Xenoblade released in Japan in June 2010 when Bandai Namco still owned 16% of Monolith Soft. It wasn't until 2011 when they sold the 16% they owned to Nintendo that Monolith Soft became an official first-party developer.

So technically Xenoblade IS a third-party developed game, the company LATER became a first-party developer after the game was made.

Nope, Nintendo owned more than 50% of stock so it's first party.

just wanted to say that I agree with the Smash part. Can I say that so far it looks like a piece of shit? Because it does. Brawl was already pretty bad gameplay-wise with those horrible controls and floaty gravity, and this one - so far - looks almost like a rehash. Hope to see some new gameplay soon.

Your ignorance isn't an argument, buddy.

Also, "meaningful mascots" is a massive goalpost move.

Also, Kid Icarus need to be added. Its basically a new IP its so different.

Valve hasnt developed its own game since half life 2

Assault>64 fuck your feelings.

Also, Mario 64 was amazing..... in 96.

I've barely played much of Assault's single player but from everything I've been hearing about the game seriously feels like a step back with unnecessary alt gameplay (that is apparently not very good) thrown in.

The muliplayer? Yes

The single player? boy stop /bigboi

lol The multiplayer was indeed godlike, but I think I liked the single player a lot because I feel that it was a good start to a new direction that they can expand on, especially if they raise the intensity of the situations in team missions. [let's say having to hold out for back up, or online co-op, etc (yes I know Nintendo + online = lol) but hey I'd give it the benefit of the doubt.] But ultimately the reason holds for me is because I saw it as a possible sign of progress and StarFox evolving.

You should revisit and consider what could be improved. That's the problem with a lot of people who can't get over past glory, they don't consider the possibilities and steps forward that games can take with new iterations, whether popular or not. Assault was a good game to me because it gave me something I wanted and a new direction. Just because you may not be satisfied with the execution doesn't mean an idea is technically a bad idea. (the execution wasn't that bad either, after all they created one of the best multiplayer titles from it.)

It's like looking at Sonic 2 and 3(K)

Sonic 2 had better multiplayer
Sonic 3 had better single player (the vs mode was trash.)

They basically made single player linear as fuck, got rid of the arcadey elements and slapped a serious story on it. And to top it off added on-foot missions. That is hardly evolution.

Star Fox is better when it's an arcade shooter. Not this serious crap.

They have so many staple franchises that when I grow tired of one, there is usually a sequel to another than sinks its hooks into me. its fairly wide spread I feel. Also, for whatever reason, their platforms always seem to house the quirky eastern style experimental experiences I find so refreshing after 29 years of gaming.

I hope, in spite of their recent missteps, they stick around a while; my kids have taken a shine to their brand.

1. We don't get Fox outside of the cock pit to really kick ass in mercenary fashion like that outside of Smash. That's one of the things that made it intriguing, I'm sure you saw that picture from the old 64 manual with Fox behind cover holding his blaster and thought it was interesting. It's basically another look at how the team got shit done, it is indeed evolution, not to mention that combined with the arenas and free to use Arwing/Landmaster resulted in the superior Starfox multiplayer title, (arcade mechanics/gameplay definitely shine in that area)

2. The dramatic story was actually a thrill for it's time and you saw a lot of interesting character interactions and relationships. My favorite was when Fox rode Wolf's arwing. Not to mention it provided an interesting speculation about the true fate of James McCloud, who could have possibly been assimilated by the Aparoid Queen since she could mimic him.

3. Yes, branching routes would be cool, I'm down for that, but it doesn't really take away from what I enjoyed.

4. You said it yourself, you only played a small portion.

1. I think it would be better if such a game was in a spinoff or a separate mode. It feels weird shoehorning on-foot segments into an arcade space shooter.

2. Why do we need a dramatic story in Star Fox? It's almost as bad as Sonic having a dramatic story... ugh. And I've watched most of the cutscenes and thought they were pretty awful.
I admit the whole Pigma getting corrupted was hilarious. LOL

3. While it might be still a fun game, the multiple paths were one of the major things that made Star Fox fun to me. So without that, it feels like a major step back, instead of an evolution.

4. I doubt I'm going to end up agreeing with anything you've said (outside of multiplayer) about the game. Not because I think you're wrong or anything, but the game just sounds really unappealing. I'd try it (only played a friend's copy), but I don't own the game yet unfortunately. Is it cheap?

Regardless, I didn't like your attitude very much because people prefer Star Fox 64 to Star Fox Assault. "fuck your feelings" Really?

Nintendo has always been a breath of fresh air to me. Thank you Nintendo.

as far as companies losing their "magic" according to Gaf everyone has. im sick of these Nintendo threads popping up, who gives a shit if dont like their games anymore you probably never did. this is a time where i wish consoles like the wii or wii u had achievements so i could look some of fuckers up and see if you even own or even finished a nintendo game in the past 6 years.

1. Why would you use the term "shoehorned" to describe it's execution? While I think they could definitely improve in the next game, I really never felt they were shoehorned. After all RE4 style gun play wasn't the standard at the time.

2. We don't NEED per say, but certain things keep those games interesting from a point a view.
You know you liked it, I almost lost my shit when I thought Pepper,Peppy, and Rob were gonna die.
Right now I think Sonic is losing his cool factor because he's becoming more wacky instead of a perfect balance of Edgy and Colorful. I mean I'm still meh about Lost World, even though I still want to give it a try, I'm not hype about it like I used to be for Sonic games. (that may be due to gameplay tho, I was a boost addict but I'm cool with going into it with an open mind, it gives me 3D Blast vibes which I like.)

3. Why can't we have both? I mean I feel like you're acting because it lacks that, the game had NO strengths. [correct me if I'm wrong.]

4. Back in 09 I bought it again at a gamestop for like $4 I think. But I recommend it, for me the only beef I really had with Assault was that I missed the direction input +boost and brake for Somersaults and U-turns. The C-stick input was too easy. Other than that, playing with friends really pushed me to become a superior dogfighter which I thought was awesome along with trying to do sneaky shit like firing a Nikita miles away from everyone else.

It's not the perfect Starfox, but it introduced a lot of things I would like to see again, improved.

Wow I complety agree with the OP, 100%. I could have written that post, except I can't write that well but it is exactly my experience with Nintendo.
I am in love with the N64 and gamecube but since the Wii it all gone down so hard..

1. Maybe shoehorned isn't the best word. But it doesn't really sounds like something that fits in an arcade shooter type game.

2. As long as it doesn't take itself too serious, I'll be fine with the story. Star Fox 64's story did felt urgent here and there, but it never took itself too serious to the point it looked awkward. (Thank god Assault was nothing like Command, that's for sure lol)

3. Huh? No. I'm just saying that the lack of multiple paths is a huge step back for me. We can easily have both "linear" and "multiple paths" by just reintroducing the latter back. You don't have to pick another path. And no, I didn't think the game had no strengths. There were some things I've enjoyed from what I've played. The multiplayer was damn great and the controls on the arwing felt very good (from what I've remembered).

4. Sounds cheap enough. Under 10 is what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Yessir. Standing by it, because the consensus can be VERY crucifying of something or even bias at times towards certain things. So sometimes I have to take an extremist approach, but atleast I was willing to talk about it instead of doing a drive by mah man.

lol and Nintendo could always go back to the "lol we killed yo daddy" jokes. They were delightfully fucked up. Which makes it awkward seeing Wolf act as a father figure to Fox in Assault.

"We killed your dad and we're done with it! The fuck you doing in my base?!"

Oh and anytime man. Some things deserve closer inspection and analysis you know. Nowadays you hear people rant on the internet about why they hate a certain game without any details.

But I hope you enjoy the second run, and possibly even find some stuff you may like from it.
