"The i7-2600K I worked with managed to skip past 5.2 GHz while pushing a mere 68°C. I'm sure you're wondering what cooler kept this processor running so cool, and here's the shocker: it was a 92mm Cooler Master Hyper TX3.

You read that correctly. This little $26 heatsink used three skinny heat-pipe rods and an Intel push-pin mounting system to tame an overclocked 5.2 GHz CPU to 68°C."

Daaaaamn.

God damn that is stupid good. Stop trying to take my money Intel.

Wouldn't a 1156 bracket work?

Does the H70 have one? I don't own one, so I am not sure.

1156 coolers plug right into LGA 1155 boards.

Not surprisingly, Intel was the first to show an overclocked SB, when they used one of their 92mm coolers (a step down from the 980X's OEM HSF) to hit 4.9GHz on an old 2600K ES.

He isn't some sort of hardcore CPU ocer and he gets these $1,500,000 cpus. :lol

Yeah a smart guy would probably buy a property while it's cheap. He's buying a... PC.

On other news I just found out about this, so bare with me. What I hoped would happen happened. Fractal released a uATX define series case. OMFG. It's exactly what you would want. All of you into style, uATX and silence will love this. Until now it was all about the Antec p180 mini (which I have). Check it...

I have this case. Aside from the rubber grommets being somewhat lousy I would say it is perfect, much better than my old p182 and smaller.

ed- oops, read too fast. mine is the define r2, slightly different.

Edit - Ugh who will ship Fractal stuff to the US?

Edit #2 - Not sure it would actually take a Hyper212+, folks tell me it is 170mm.

Holy balls. That is epic on such a simple and cheap cooler. Plus it's good to know my H50 will be good for a while yet. The article makes a case that the market for after market coolers may actually be coming to an end, or at least redirecting. When you think that these results from a simple cooler, and in 12 months we will be talking about 22nm CPU's running much cooler, and it will only get more efficient from there. You have to wonder, will there be a place for specialized cooling for your cpu when it runs so smooth on a simple HSF? There will ALWAYS be a hardcore market but it won't be as big as it is now, something similar to the GPU market in the mid nineties maybe. With such cheap coolers getting such amazing results, there isn't the margins there once was to make a business case out of HSFs.

Don't you have an ATX board? The Define Mini is strictly mITX and mATX. US residents either order from overseas or go through NCIX for ~$50 shipping.

hey GAF - looking to pull the trigger on a setup for a friend over at ibuypower, with the following specs:

CoolerMaster HAF 932 Full Tower Gaming Case
i7-950
(liquid cooling + standard 120mm fan)
6GB DDR3
1.5 TB @ 7200 RPM

looking to be @ 1k-1100 (before shipping), 2 quick questions:

1) mobo options:
MSI X58 PRO-E

vs

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R w/ 4x PCI-E 2.0 x16

thoughts? i gotta look up reviews, i recall some of you guys saying Gigabyte's a good brand/great for overclocking usually, just curious as the latter is about $35 more

2) GPU:
GTX 450 (free upgrade to a 460 right now) vs ATI 6850 ($73 more) - im happy with my 6870 and ive read/noticed it does well with stuff like dolphin, plasmas etc, but the benchmarks im looking at here so far put them in a similar ballpark - thoughts?

appreciate the help as always, heres to more PC gaming!
If he isn't willing to wait for the new CPUs to launch, go with the Gigabyte. It has USB 3 and Sata 3. If the upgrade is for a 1GB GTX 460, he's set. Seems like it may be a 768MB, or SE model. Have him look at some bench marks for his resolution. Even if it is the 768MB model, the 6850 is not worth $73 more.

Also, the GTX 560 is launching at the end of this month. Faster than a 6870, but it will most likely cost ~$250. Just something to keep in mind.

Negative, I have a P55M-UD2 (mATX). That is not to say I typically have mATX boards though, that's just how it worked out in this build (because I got the board for like $60 back when I picked up my i5-750). I'm going to stick with the CM in the end because I don't want to get rocked on the shipping, and I don't know if I'll wind up with another mATX board next time. So sexy though... god damn.

We're mostly being overly critical because it's such an expensive system.

If you're spending that much money on a system, it should be a little less half assed than this.

Pretty much. I would make sure everything worked and fit properly. Then again we don't have gobs of money to spend and not really care if we don't do it properly.

I can't watch this anymore, dude is breaking everything, he doesn't even know how to properly put in a fan. I'm out!

So I decided that it's time to upgrade my computer. I'm planning on spending around 400-600 dollars.

My current PC has:
CPU - AMD Phenom X4 9600 Black Edition (four 2.3GHz cores)
Ram - 4.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz
Motherboard - ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4N82 DELUXE (has AM3 support)
Graphics Card - 896MB GeForce GTX 260
Harddrive - 195GB SAMSUNG SAMSUNG SP2004C ATA Device (SATA)

Top priority is my CPU and Harddrive. I probably need a new power supply as well.
Anybody? :\

I am a fellow 800d user. I see one major problem with this case long term: unfortunately the front panel USB ports are 2.0 :(

pretty sure USB 3.0 has a slightly different connector with more pins. meaning to upgrade the front panel to USB 3.0 would require new ports to be installed. and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get at them :/

Plus it isn't the best when if comes to air cooling. It does the job but there are cases more optimised for air cooling. However, chuck a 360mm rad on the roof and you have a GREAT case. Plus it's a sexy mother fucker.

You put in a price point and said you wanted CPU as your focus?
Samsung F3 or WD 1TB (or F4 2TB) for HDD.

If you want to spend more money on something else, then you can get a 1090T (if your motherboard supports 125w AM3)

Well, the Intel CPU/Mobo will last you another 3 years. Putting a new processor in the AM2+ socket will not really feel like an upgrade.

Go for a AMD 1090T processor, but check to make sure your mobo supports it. AM2+ boards don't all support all AM3 chips. Add in a Samsung F3 1TB HDD Which should put your total at about $200. Then if you want you can upgrade your GPU to a 6950 and you'll have a beast once again.

Don't worry about the pics so much as opening your case to see just what they've built for you, particularly the "custom watercooling." You shouldn't have to buy a new cooler. If you decide to get one anyway look into down-firing HSFs and search around for what other SG07 owners are using.
