Not a fan of building with Antecs due to the lacking features (no perpendicular drive bays, mediocre cable management)...but they at least have pretty good build quality. For $30, the Antec 300 is a pretty decent buy. Still, I'm never against spending a bit more on a more usable case than can last through a few builds and make upgrades more painless.
It's the build quality that kills them for me. They're like the IKEA of computer cases. I used to swear by them about 6-8 years ago, but I've had too many break on me and have seen countless friends buy one that only lasts a single build. Too much plastic, crappy machining, bad reinforcement.

We can't give you a definite answer. No one knows what it will take to run BF3 at max settings, yet.

The closest thing to a GTX 580 is the GTX 570. 85% of the performance for $350 instead of $500.

Surely the 480 is similar to 570?

Plus the Gigabyte SuperOC version with custom cooler is going for relatively cheap here in UK.

They're pretty much even. You're just generally dealing with a much hotter card in the 480, but it might be okay with a custom cooler.

Hmmm...the last 900 Two I saw seemed a bit better than my CM 690 in terms of build quality.

Are there any negatives to buying a piece of OC hardware? I always get the impression as someone who's a complete PC peon that OCing hardware would push them beyond their limits and potentially cause them to break. Am I being stupid here? I want my PC to last, I don't want to push it over its limits and cause it to combust.

Ok I have made my own list.

Budget: 500$ < 800$

Monitor Resolution: 1280 x 1024
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able to play: Witcher 2
Are reusing any parts?: No.
When will you build?: 1-2 weeks.
Will you be overclocking?: Maybe.

Apologies if links are too much of a hassle.

Solid build, though if your main goal here is playing The Witcher 2, I highly suggest going for a faster GPU. A GTX 460 768mb at the very minimum.

Yeah and the 480 draws more power for sure.

Certainly, though at $30 more that 6950 that Wallach posted would be hard to pass up. I guess you need to stop sometime, though.

If you want an idea of where they stand:

perfrel_1920.gif

The 6950 is too big of an improvement over the 6850 to pass up, IMO.

Yes, you will need a wireless card/dongle.

Yes, it would just change the 1 week into a 2 week time period.

It's an open box item so it's going to disappear very soon, surely. That said when you get ready to purchase you should always check Newegg's open box items to see what's available, the discounts are generally quite huge and the items are still able to be RMA'd if they turn out bad (though they're usually tested by them before being listed for sale). That would be my plan if really trying to stick to a budget.

Edit - Oh, I'm also selling a 5850 for ~$125 shipped CONUS should that tickle someone's fancy.

Good, hopefully the price doesn't jump up any time soon hehe. I appreciate the help, ill give an update tonight in terms of where I stand for the time period and payment aspects.

Actually one last question, with the equipment that I stated, around where on the graphics scale do you think The Witcher 2 would play? Medium, High, Ultra?

There actually was an open box 2GB HIS but it already seems to be OOS.

Edit - Someone just bought all of the remaining 2GB 6950s from all vendors...

Speaking of open box goodies, there is a tri-slot ASUS CUII GTX 570 up on Newegg for $260, which is a pretty sweet deal imo: LINK

I'd probably pick that up myself if I was getting paid today rather than next Friday.

I would assume "Open Box" means refurbished?

Will you be overclocking?: For sure.

I already have:
Power supply - 750 Watt
Video Card - EVGA 560 Ti Superclocked
CD/DVD Drive
2 Hard drives

I need:
Motherboard [ASUS M5A88-V EVO] - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131733

I said the same thing when I built in a HAF. Then I took it to a LAN.
Eh, I don't LAN so it's not a huge issue for me. Definitely have no plans on moving this thing. It's over 60 pounds fully assembled. The only time it's leaving the house is if the house is burning down.

MedIC86 said:
Izayoi, get some ductape in that mofo, you have a nice start but you can get those cables way tighter :) looks even better !
They're all hidden anyway, and it's not like they're blocking airflow. Unless you mean my exposed cables, in which case I haven't figured out what I'm going to do yet.

celcius said:
I saw that you bought the beefy psu for possible sli down the road, but looking inside at the 3-slot videocard, is another card going to fit?
See that light blue PCI slot? Right below that is the second PCIe slot, where my second videocard would go. ASUS left enough room on the motherboard for triple-slot SLI solutions.

Manp said:
i have to say this stupid thing that's crossing my mind: let's stop this 3 slots videocard nonsense before it becomes standard for hi-end gpu!

:)
At first they scared me too, but I kinda like it.

My videocard is practically room temperature when idle and the fans are whisper quiet.

kpx0 said:
meh, you dont need a $100 case to have nice cable management... get rid of unnecessary extra case fans/drives, pick your parts better and a decent modular psu.. pic of my $15 case:

http://i53.tinypic.com/wujlau.jpg[IMG]
Dropping fans from a case is never something I would consider, especially not when overclocking. I've got 6TB of data that I definitely would not want to part with, either. The PSU I got is modular, and when I bought my old computer (the one on the right) five years ago I'm not even sure if modular PSU's were in vogue yet. If they were they were way out of my price range so I didn't bother anyway.
Is a full tower case worth it over a mid tower?
As someone who has built in both now, I guess it depends. Full towers are a real joy to work with, but don't plan on ever moving it around.

Anyway, this computer is quieter under load than my old one was idle. So amazing. Thanks to everyone who helped me out and gave me suggestions, I really appreciate it.

My core temperatures are all reading 0 degrees in HWmonitor. Anyone have an idea why that might be?

EDIT: NVM. a quick google told me to turn CnQ and Core Unlocker off and that fixed it.

For battlefield 3, do you think a gtx 580 and i5-2500k will be enough to max everything?
Hope so.

I will do whatever it takes to run that game at max and 60fps+. Whether that's grabbing another 580 or whatever is top dog at time I DUNT CARE

Pants rising just thinking about BF3

IMO the Antec 300 is probably the best low-cost case on the market. I used one on my last build and while it's not feature rich or anything it is a really great case for the price.
I bought the Antec 300 from Microcenter for like $25 when I built my PC and it's been just fine for me. I wish I could have put the PSU at the top of the case, and I have a hard time getting the awesome cable management that people in this thread pull off, but it seems like a great case for a beginner like myself.

My next PC build will use a better case, though.

If you have a beefy power supply i recommend getting 2 570's. They out perform a 580 by a decent amount. i'm gonna assume you don't have a build yet though.

Yea, no way of knowing but I really am hoping so. I'm getting ready to order a some really expensive parts and I hope they are able to max out everything for the next year or two.

Any suggestions for a decent Micro ATX motherboard with on board GPU (AMD) or one that supports the on die GPU (Intel)? A friend is looking to build a machine for work, not a gaming machine. He has a case/PSU already.

Almost certainly. That 12 minute video they released was recorded with a single GTX 580. Can't remember the processor, but it doesn't get much better than the 2500K for gaming right now so you should be good to go.

For those that care...

Watch 3D Youtube with 3D Vision directly from your browser

3D Vision Live Website

So with Firefox 4, the latest 275.27 beta drivers and youtube you can now watch windowed 3D videos directly in the browser.

Couple of caveats
 • NO SLI! Damn you nvidia
 • Firefox 4 only, it uses webm. Funnilly chrome doesn't support webm
 • Must clean install 275.27 drivers
 • Ad-free HTML5 videos only, no flash

If you don't want navigate your way through those restrictions then head on over to 3dvisionlive to see if your system is compatible.

3d-vision-html5-video-streaming.jpg

Also 275.27 brought about some syncing improvements for gaming and subjectively it makes it about 50% better. Seems much smoother with less ghosting and jitter.

EDIT: annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd no 1080p support for HTML5 vids, thanks youtube =(

I find it fantastic! It's really heavy and sturdy, deffo feels like you get your moneys worth.
Regarding the noise issue I'm using a water cooling set up so its really quiet well until the 2 gtx's kick in :)

Hey guys..
Just wondering what my upgrade options are.

I have :

i5 750
p7p55d-le motherboard
4GB RAM
and
XFX 5850 1GB (got it right when it launched)

I remember hearing something about how Crossfire would suck on my computer.. is that true? I'm trying to think of possible upgrades in order to slay Battlefield 3.

I have my video card and processor both overclocked and get amazing performance on BFBC2.

Anybody have any upgrade ideas?

Yeah, IIRC your second PCI-E slot is actually a PCI-E 1.0 4x electrical, meaning it runs a lot slower than the slot your XFX 5850 currently occupies. Not worth it. You'd be better off selling the 5850 and upgrading to another single slot card.
