Alright I'm planning on building a gaming PC, but I've never owned one before so I'm not very knowledgable on what brands are the best or what all those numbers and letters are even meant to mean.

I live in UK and my budget is around £900

So I got my friend to help me out and he suggested this.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Any feedback to this? How well will the video card to me? any suggested changes? I'm thinking I might pay a bit more for a higher frame-rate monitor. Other than that I'm not sure. He seemed a little unsure about the motherboard, so what will that get me, I don't think that has wifi on it, so that might be an issue, but I'm not sure.
Here's an alternative for you. I'll put my reasoning for changes below :)

  • The Z170 motherboard is only really needed for overclocking, which you won't be doing with the Core i5-6500, so I dropped that to a B150 and chose a micro-ATX sized one.
  • As the motherboard size has gone down, I chose a smaller (and nicer looking) case, and reduced the size of the CPU cooler too to fit. I like having an aftermarket cooler even on a non-overclockable processor as you get quieter operation.
  • Doubled the memory to 16GB as there's room in the budget!
  • Left the SSD as it is as it's a good choice, swapped the WD for Seagate just to save a few quid - if you prefer WD just get that :)
  • Changed the 1060 for the RX 480 for a few reasons. First, that 1060 is really expensive so we'll save some money. Second, whilst the RX 480 is slightly less powerful, it's still great for 1080p and has an extra 2GB of VRAM. And third...
  • I swapped the monitor out for one that performs just as well, is only £2 more expensive and has FreeSync support, which will be great with that RX 480.
  • Finally, I dropped in a 500W power supply that's more efficient.

What's the cheapest gpu I could buy that would completely out do my 7970?

An RX 480 or GTX1060 6GB will do.

So I'm in the market for a new CPU/motherboard, but I'm a little nervous as I've never done that upgrade before.

Will I need to buy a new copy of Windows 10 to install? I had 8.1 and then did the free upgrade to 10.

What else "carries" over? Everything on my SSD will be fine, correct? Are there any other things I should be aware of when upgrading the CPU and motherboard?

Sorry for the noobish question. I've been putting off this upgrade for a while because it feels incredibly daunting to me. Built this first PC nearly 6 years ago and I'm afraid of going back inside and fucking things up, lol. Thanks all!

You don't need to reinstall anything, it'll run fine, unfortunately you'll have to purchase another license as your current one is already tied to your motherboard.

As someone mentioned earlier, consider a smaller motherboard - ATX isn't really needed these days.

If you're sticking with the 6500 you can't over Lockerbie so you won't really need the hyper 212. Personally though I'd keep the hyper 212 and upgrade to the 6600k if you can stretch to it.

Do you need to buy a monitor - no option to connect up to your TV? Would save some money to be used elsewhere on the system.

I do want a monitor, but I'll remove it from the list, as I'll probably buy it later.

The CPU you've picked isn't a 'K' one which can't be overclocked (when used with a 'Z170' board). If you'te sticking with the CPU I'd probably ditch the board and get a H110 variant instead (around £20 cheaper) as I believe the chipsets are the same sans OC ability.

You've also only got 1 stick of RAM in that build. Really you want two sticks so you're running in daul-channel mode and feeding more bandwidth to the CPU.

Okay, so this if what I'm looking at now.

Thanks, I'll take a look at this, too. But the video card isn't that much cheaper, which do you think is better? because I don't mind paying a bit more for something better.

Go with window 10, 7 is old. The 1060 is this generation.

Probably an RX 480 or a GTX 1060.

GTX 1060 > RX 480

Another option is to go crossfire!.

If you buy 2 RX480 4GB, which will be around $400, you get crazy performance at 4k.

Far Cry primal ultra quality = 43fps average
GTA V Very high quality = 60fps average
ROTTR Very high quality = 60fps average

and so on..

Not sure yet if the motherboard will burn up when the RX480 takes so much power from the PCIE :D

And be ready to face a ton of technical issue in the rest 90% of games. Really, don't go multi GPU if you are not willing to deal with all sorts of things.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend Crossfire or SLI unless you can get a really good deal on a second card a couple of years down the line or something.

Anyone wanna reassure me on my worries about a dead PSU?

Just did the paperclip test today and it looks like it's dead. No fans spun at all.

Hoping to see if I still have a warranty on the thing, but I'm terrified the "dead" PSU fried all my parts. I've heard horror stories...

I'm in the market for a new CPU/motherboard anyway, but I still have a new SSD, GTX970, and 16 gigs of RAM in there I would rather not shell out money to replace..

My processor finally arrived yesterday which was the finally thing I needed to actually have a fictional PC.

Someone gutted the box and stole the processor. I took the package directly from the postman so it obviously happened during transit.

Already got in touch with Amazon and they have offered a full refund so that is nice and I cant fault that customer service.

They packed the damn thing in one of the small boxes made for books and DVD's you can easily open without damaging the shipping box as there was no tape or staples holding it closed. Just folded closed.

Lesson learned. I aint ordering a small expensive thing from Amazon again.

Would there be any noticeable difference between DDR4-3000 and 3200 memory? Both sets have a timing of 14-14-14-34.

Memory in question:
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (Model F4-3000C14D-16GVK) = $113
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (Model F4-3200C14D-16GVK) = $120

DDR4-3000 (15-15-15-35) goes for $110, so I'm not considering it at all. Maybe I should just go with the cheapest option which would be DDR4-3000 (15-16-16-35) for $99?

I am trying to build a pc. Never tried it before but I see a need to have a decent one. My planner specs are as follows:

i5 3770k
1050 Ti
16gb Ddr4
Budget: (400-500$)

Problem is I do not have any prior knowledge to building one so no idea on the motherboard to use or if one component is overkill compared to their parts. Any sugguestion will be very much appreciated. Thanks!

That's a very old processor, plus its not compatible with ddr4. An i5 6500 would be good, or an i3 to save on costs.

If you guys had to choose between an ATX motherboard or a micro ATX one, what would you choose?

My case supports both, so no issues there. mATX seems cheaper too

It doesn't matter really, if the mAtx board has all the features you want, go for it. I personally use a mITX board.

mATX boards seems far more common (I can see a bunch of them on the website I brought my PC components, but barely any ATX's one), so I'll probably go with one of those.
And hey, they are cheaper

An mATX board won't look good in a full sized case though. But if it doesn't have a window that's fine.
You could probably go for the Z170-A which is a full ATX board or wait for Kaby Lake/200 series boards or AMD Zen in January.

Yeah, that's my concern. Mine currently is a ATX, and it looks great as it is.
I'll be using it with a i5 6400 and 2133 ddr4 memory, so I won't need a Z170.

Oh, you already have both the memory and the processor then? In that case something like the Asus B150 Pro Gaming should do.
Be warned though, that faster RAM does give significant benefits in many modern games now.

The processor I already have, but I'll need to buy the ram. That why I also don't want to spend too much.
No need for buying faster ram if you don't have a Z170 or equivalent, I believe

Try to look for a cheap Z170 board and at least 2666 or 3200MHz if you can.
I think there are also some B150 boards that support faster RAM.
Are you in the USA or another country?

I'm in Brazil, actually.
I do see a mATX Z170 board that's cheaper than the ATX's that I'm seeing (Not by much, though)

Nice. If you haven't installed a OS, If i'm not mistaken you can download windows 10, install and use it without a serial key. Once you get the OS you can use the key to activate it.

Which version did you go with?
I recently built a system and had the same question. From what I read if you don't know which version to get (pro or home) than you probably won't have any need for the extra features that come with pro. None of the pro features sounded useful for my needs so I went ahead with the home version on usb.
Also you can always upgrade from home to pro anytime you wish in the future.

Feedback is welcome I wont be ordering anything until next week so it can still change.

All I need to work out now is the monitor, is it worth getting 120ghz or 144 over 60, considering this is my first gaming PC? I know I wont run any demanding games at those framerates, but for older games it would be nice.

Finally, this place is selling Window 10 for £25.99, has anyone brought from them before? Is this legit? https://softwaregeeks.co.uk/product...EmTnq2n_DbmEv-nAwRESiunTOXS-ezt0uWBoCkYbw_wcB

Created a thread for this with no response, so I figured that I might as well try asking here, how S.O.L. am I trying to get my Corsair H2100 to work with my PS4?

I recently picked up Overwatch for my new PS4 at GameStop yesterday on the cheap due to it being Pro Reward day in addition to my employee discount, and was utterly disappointed when the headset I regularly use on my PC, the Corsair H2100, would quickly be recognized by the console and disconnect repeatedly.

thumb_1966_product_productslide.png

Is this headset truly PC only? Why would it work for a little while and quit working again suddenly? It kept doing this over and over, but works fine on my PC. Some sort of driver/firmware issue? Any guidance would be much appreciated, as I'd hate to have to scoop up another headset if I don't need to.

Hmm, I've got the itch to upgrade but my 4.6ghz 2600k still runs all my stuff flawlessly and the next two PC games that I'm looking forward to in 2017 (Tales of Berseria & Tekken 7) should be no exception. Plus Kaby Lake is supposed to release early January so it wouldn't make sense to upgrade before then if I don't need to.

If there is no mention of any console compatibility either where you bought the item or on the manufacturer site, then do not assume it will be compatible for anything other than PC.

Skylake to Kaby is going to be a negligible difference in performance but likely a big difference in cost at launch. If you are planning to upgrade soon I'd definitely recommend keeping an eye out for some good sales through the holidays.

A 6700K and a solid motherboard on sale will probably cost nearly as much as a 7700K will be at launch.

Wait for kabylake if you don't need the CPU horsepower right this moment.
The cost will be the same today or in January for a skylake or kabylake system.

A Kaby build in January will definitely be more expensive than a Skylake build in November-December for almost no difference in performance. A 7700K is going to run you nearly $400 in January, and based on recent sales it's not unlikely that you will be able to get a 6700K that's effectively the same in most workloads for about $300 if not less.

Well, I broke. I reached my moral event horizon for PC gaming and I feel entirely, utterly defeated and overwhelmed.

My goal, I thought, was simple - if EA wouldn't give us a Mass Effect Trilogy remaster, I would just go PC, grab the improved textures mods and controller support mod, and I'd be walking on sunshine.

I went to a computer shop with a list of parts I thought would get the job done and got what I assumed was a decent rig out of my $700 about two years ago. One that would also let me continue my side-job making 3D models and programming my own game levels with Unreal Engine and Unity, etc. But mostly, I just wanted a great Mass Effect experience for a series I loved that EA seems hellbent on never re-issuing.

Hours and days and weeks later, and I'm just broken. The game works... kinda. Until it doesn't. Performance is miserable. The game stutters and freezes and frequently crashes. Lowering the visuals from "ultra high" to just "high" does nothing to improve performance and the game's visuals nosedive. The game chugs and collapses at a resolution of 1080x720, far lower than my monitor outputs. The controller mod seems to work great... except my Steam Link fails to recognize it when I connect my Xbox One controller to it. Audio is out of sync, anti-aliasing seems to flare up and off at random, and it's just draining me as I sink hours into troubleshooting and re-installing and it's been far more hassle than it's worth.

I want to do PC gaming so badly, and it seems like everyone else has this stuff figured out. It's like a foreign language I've kept trying to study diligently yet am no more fluent than I was when I first begun.

I don't know who's to blame. Is it me? My software? My hardware? Am I the one breaking the game? Incompatible parts? Is it the Steam Link? Is a video card? A driver? Is it just because I'm trying to run an old game on a newer OS and computer?

I tried replaying ME1 on Xbox One with backwards compatibility, but the performance is just... it's still so bad. But it's not any better than what I'm dealing with now. Sure, the shadows and textures are better, but it's pointless if Steam Link doesn't detect my Xbox One controller (yet my PC does), or if the game chugs to a standstill and freezes every 30 seconds or so (if it doesn't crash entirely).

Just trying to get my favorite game to run on PC smoothly and it's just worn me down...

Here's my specs, if anyone feels kind enough to take a look at them and see if you can spot anything hilariously dated or out of place. The game is ancient, so I'm 90% sure I'm the one breaking it.

Wanted to try out my 1060gtx, so I brought Killing Floor 2 on Steam. I really like the first one, and 2 seemed like a good graphical upgrade, while not being too expensive.

Booted the game up, and it defaulted to 4k on High presets.

Feels good, man.

Alright so I've looked over my options and I think this is what I'll be going with.

Doesn't that motherboard only come with 1 system fan header?
