End result should look like this S4-mini (with the wrap around aluminum Bezel OFF) seen at the 6 minute mark.

And a Size comparison of going from my Full-Tower ATX to a 4.3L Mini-ITX:

Hey PC GAF, I'm looking to get a 1070, and hoping to get one with two HDMI ports, as I'm just using 1080p monitors.

Is there a reason this card is cheaper than the other version I've looked at (which all seem to be around $450).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IPVTHL8/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Basically the same as FE one (base clock). Go with Dual OC if you are aiming for the price range. Dual means two fan, and a healthy boost of clock

Hey gaf, don't really have the money for it at the moment, but I think it's time to upgrade from my R9 290. Dishonored 2 (of all things) is the first game to make me consider upgrading myGPU in quite a few years so I'm no looking for suggestions.

One factor is I have a freesync monitor, so while I would like to get a 1070 or the like, I think I'm stuck with AMD for now.

I would say 'wait for Vega' in this case. I don't think it's currently worth it to upgrade to another AMD GPU when the Vega release is rather close now (or well.. there isn't much to choose now on AMD side atm).

Vega is gonna be ludicrously expensive though isn't it :/

I think there will be at least a ~gtx 1070 performing card from amd too with probably same or cheaper prices. I doubt they will leave mid segment card to Nvidia alone and skip to high end directly.

Can someone help me build a PC between 500-550€?

It's been ages that i followed hardware and i have no clue whats good, the OP is kinda out dated i think.
Dont need monitor and kb/m

Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone?

I was thinking i3 processor and some basic motherboard and 8GB of ram but i'm not sure what graphics card.

Thanks so much for the response! this stuff is so stressful for me, I want to make sure it's pcgaf approved. lol

I should add that if you picked the parts for me or whatever to be assembled by NCIX I would be fine with "building a PC" that way. I truly have no idea what to look for. :p

generally I also like to get the warranty for these kind of purchases so ideally I'd like to spend 1200 total

It's fine, you shouldn't need a DVD drive anymore. Windows can be installed from a USB thumbstick.
Do note that the parts are using an old platform - albeit a good one. New PCs use DDR4 and Skylake 6xxx CPU, which is a generation ahead of Haswell 4xxx CPU models. No massive loss.

Right, but with the budget constrains i'm assuming it's not achievable to have the new generation?
Would it be possible to run recent AAA games in 1080p with this rig i'm building?

Also, would everything fit in micro atx? motherboard is micro but will all the other components fit?

In relation to what, Nvidia?

I meant more that the brand new Vega is gonna be more expensive than a second hand current mid-range card from either company.

I think there will be at least a ~gtx 1070 performing card from amd too with probably same or cheaper prices. I doubt they will leave mid segment card to Nvidia alone and skip to high end directly.

Guess I'll just wait and see. We're getting Vega news soon right?

Both HDMI and DP do their job just fine, there is no need to pick one over another save for gsync.

Oh i know, but I have dual monitors that only have HDMI ports. Most of the cards I'm seeing only have 1 HDMI port, so for the other monitor on my current 970, i'm having to use this clunky DVI to HDMI cable.

Are you sure it's your card and not the game? Dishonored 2 has known performance issues, specifically that it's extraordinary CPU-taxing if you want to maintain 60fps without stutter.

I'm really hoping nvidia's ces countdown timer hype is for the 1080ti unveiling.

I wonder if they are going to stick with the "founder edition" garbage.

[H]ardOCP did an i7-7700K Overclocking preview with 3 of their processors, which they beleive to be retail samples.

"We were able to replicate these 5GHz stable overclocking results on three different Z270 chipset motherboards. We were also able to confirm that we could not get our other two 7700K processors to 5GHz on those motherboards as well. One of our other 7700K processors was however stable at 4.9HGz with the other stable at 4.8GHz. With both of these lower overclocks we were able to complete these at 1.32v and 1.30v. Even pushing these lesser processors up to 1.45v vCore would not net us stability."

So the easy 5GHz on air still can't be delivered by Intel, but 4.8 on a "bad" CPU seems like a nice overclock to me. Although, 82c on a custom loop has me a little worried... I might just buy that Delidding kit and all the supplies that this guy on youtube did, just to see if I can get that magic -25c reduction in temperature under load.

Welp my H100i V2 pump has died after 6 months. Have a replacement on the way but how common is this issue? Kinda scary but thanks for the Corsair Link it alerted me as soon as it happened.

Yes it'll all fit in that zalman case.

Generally there is hardly any difference in price with the older haswell and latest skylake parts - so it's best to check at your store too.

Yes the rig will give more than enough performance for your needs.

Mine lasted 4 months before it died. I too was alerted by link which is nice. I didnt even bother returning it since I wanted it fixed fast. Just ordered a new one and its been fine.

I believe mine may have been defective from the start. Since I installed the new one my temps are much lower than ever before and the fans are quieter.

Nice. My 6700k idles around 25-27 Celsius before it died. I hope this is not a common occurrence with this thing dying.

So been thinking of getting a new case i currently use the Corsair air 540 but the issue i have with it now is that its a bit too wide.

I think i might go and get the Corsair Crystal Series 570X does anyone have this and if so how do they find it?

  • Only 3-6% faster than 6700k
  • No thermal or power advantages over 6700k

Pretty lackluster upgrade. Glad I didn't wait and jumped on a 6700k at a good price.

I'm still using a 3570K from early 2013 so I'll probably go ahead and go with the 7700K.

Wait. New AMD CPU and GPU lineups will most likely be out by then. There will be more options and better prices, most likely.

Doing a little research on my own about rumors. Are these new options going to compete for a $700 build? Seems like the new GPUs may be enthusiast grade stuff that will be way out of budget for me.

Right now my build consists of the i5 6500 and GTX 1060 6gb.

Definitely will be a huge jump for you and a worthwhile upgrade.

I'm only poo-pooing the lackluster difference between 6th and 7th gen.

I jumped from my trusty 2500k to a 6700k this year and it has been amazing.

I'm more than likely going to do a full on upgrade; case, GPU and all. Waiting to see if the 1080ti is getting announced this week as my 970 really can't push 1440p with all the bells and whistles.

You need to add thermal paste. Clean off the old stuff if it's still on there (rubbing alcohol works). There are lots of youtube videos showing how to apply paste if you need (just apply a small, pea-sized blob and then mount the cooler).

Ok will do. Will any rubbing alcohol do? Also my PC can't boot from the hard drive now. It says I need to reboot and select boot device. I feared I may have to format and reinstall and when I go to bios the hard drive is there but it says no bootable device.

So, is the latest on 7700K release date still late January/February? A while back Fry's had it listed on their website as "Pre-order, arrives on 1/4/2017", but then they quickly took it down and I haven't found it anywhere else since.

Looks like 7700k reviews are out today but I don't see it listed on newegg or amazon... I'm guessing today was a paper launch? Any news on retail availability?

I'd get the Zotac Mini 4GB 1050 Ti. $140 is a good price for it. EVGA is my favorite GPU seller but their 1050 Ti is overpriced for some reason.

Is the extra fan/larger size even beneficial? I have the mini 750Ti and haven't noticed any problems at all. If not, I'll just get the mini one. Is it a significant upgrade from the 750Ti? I think I have the 1GB VRAM model.

It is a substantial upgrade over the 750 Ti. I was just watching a video where the 750 Ti was getting 30 fps in Battlefield 1 while the 1050 Ti was getting 55-60.

More fans/bigger fans can make a difference when it comes to cooling more powerful GPUs, but the 1050 Ti is so power efficient and cool already that I don't think you'll have any issues with the mini.
