I guess Noctua is considered the high end of air cooling, but imo not as much a temp difference against Thermalright.
Noctua do have better customer service, and will provide free clips when there are new Intel/Amd sockets.

Oh yes, you need to clean off the old goo with rubbin alcohol and reapply a new one. Most heatsink will come with a free tube.

But remember to turn on your pc, runs some apps to heat up the cpu before shutting off for removal.
This makes it easier to take out your old heatsink.

Yeh as long as the spaces you have are for standard 120mm fans then they should fit.

Best thing to do is check the website page for your case, it will tell you what size fans are compatible. It's usually 120mm for case fans but sometimes they can take 140mm fans. The case I have can take either.

Depends on what your needs are and how much you're willing to spend. What's your full list of components? In particular how many hard drives do you have?

My general case recommendations are as follows:

Yeah I agree but then again I game on a OLED. Depending on your screen some kind of bias lighting can make the blacks appear deeper at night.

Whenever people have seen the build in person it's got nothing but compliments and I've had people refer me to others to build PC's for them or their kids.

avoid flashy build if you dont want to cable managed led cables, so messy.
in fact, also go all nvme ssd and use external hdd for storage, no sata cables, much clean, less dust.

Trust me when I say it's a rabbit hole if you're into visual design in any way. My next build will 100% be a custom water loop build.

Yeh the cable management part is a nightmare for these types of builds if you get any case other than the Lian Li pc-o11. You 100% need to get some high quality cable extensions (or make your own if you're capable) because the cables that come with most power supplies are stiff and look like trash.

But you can have drives that require sata cables without it fucking up the look of your build, it just depends on where the ports are on your motherboard, your cases cable management and where the hard drives live in your case. You've got to plan for that stuff.

My CPU is really close to its last legs and I'm sure my minimum frames would be so much better with a modern CPU. My cooling + case are still top-notch ( afaik ) .

Should I update this year, which will lock me into AM4? I won't have that many upgrade paths (depending on the board I guess) or is it wiser to wait next year for AM5 + DDR5..?

Do you actually have a (measured) requirement that your system isn't able to keep up? The only reason I can think of rushing to upgrade is if you're at >60hz. Granted, upgrading now isn't the worst thing in the world. DDR5 is gonna be more like a 2022 thing and very expensive at first, and then unlikely to be all that important considering how GPU bound games still are, though I suppose games might evolve a bit more by then so as to use the CPU & RAM better.

So idk, if you plan to keep the CPU platform for >5 years then waiting for DDR5 is a safe bet as these platforms have a longer & longer lifespan. But I'd say there's no rush to upgrade necessarily, since the 3770K is still quite capable & ultimately the 1070 isn't a very strong GPU anymore so it's not like your framerate is gonna jump (though I understand the minimums will be better at least).

Value wise you can't go wrong with buying the CPU 2nd hand tbh, I reckon the new ones will be much more costly than existing CPUs while not moving the needle much in terms of performance. That being said, I just don't think the improvements are that big between yours & Zen 2. Intel still has a significant advantage in many older titles as far as that goes, and one that's not really gonna go away due to the fundamental difference in architectures (with ringbus always offering lower latency vs chiplets), so while the difference might be more significant if you went to a let's say 10700K or so at 5 Ghz, it's gonna be lesser on AMD, but in any case hard to really recommend either in your case as it would be costly for both setups.

I've gone from a similar system to yours (mine was a 3570k @ 4.6, 16gb ram, 980ti) to a 3900x, 32gb ram, 2070 super and it's a night and day difference. So much smoother, much better minimum framerates and the CPU bottlenecks that I was experiencing in certain games have evaporated.

What it comes down to is whether you want to upgrade now (around the time of the new nvidia cards) or wait for later this year when the new AMD CPU's launch. Also depends on your budget of course.

If you plan on playing flight sim or do any work that requires it on your computer then yes.

As for the question, on mixing brands... can you share what the exact models are (both what you have and what you intend to buy).

Under all the external branding there are only really 3 different manufacturers of ram - hynix, samsung and micron. That is what you want to match (along with the speed of course). Also check your motherboards QVL list.

Since I was figuring I would want one for certain things (rpcs3 for example) do USB optical drives actually work as well or in my case would I just be better off getting a case with a external drive bay and a regular sata optical drive? I figured I'd ask since when I looked up rpcs3 is had a list of compatible drives and I don't know if it's a deal where most drives work fine, they just list drives they know are going to work.

I don't need a new computer right now. Mine is 6 years old, and wasn't even great back then, but there's nothing that was released since I built it that warranted an upgrade, and nothing releasing "soon" that would, either.
Still, it's getting old, and reading all you guys' posts makes me want something new. Something powerful. Although, again - I have absolutely no need for it right now. I have a lot of money saved up thanks to the lockdown cutting down on my living expenses considerably, so "budget" doesn't even matter, just... I don't really need anything... *sobs*

Oh well, I'll just look forward to the "I need a new PC, 2021 edition" thread when I actually do need an upgrade for something I really have to play!

Yields & demand. I wouldn't normally say yields but I believe the 10850 SKU is specifically being introduced to alleviate that somewhat.

Very much phased out now. I swear I saw one reviewed on GN recently but I can't remember the name.
USB optical drives are fine AFAIK, but for RPCS3 you would want to stick to their compatibility list or find reports online for external drives that work. A quick google mentions an ASUS drive but it isn't exactly cheap.

Really nice management. Is that a P400a case? I'm going back and forth on what case to get since I want an upgrade. Looking at the P400, a Be Quiet Dark base 700 and the matrexx 55 V3. It's so hard to decide.
