India is hoping to make history on Wednesday by becoming the first nation to land near the Moon's south pole.
One of the mission's major goals is to hunt for water-based ice, which scientists say could support human habitation on the Moon in future.
If Chandrayaan-3 is successful, India will be only the fourth country to have achieved a soft landing on the Moon.
India's attempt comes just days after Russia's Luna-25 crashed while trying to touch down in the same region.
The south pole of the Moon holds special promise in the search for water ice. The surface area that remains in permanent shadow there is huge, and scientists say it means there is a possibility of water in these areas.

I mean, you could say the same thing about the rest of the world, in an ideal world I suppose we should stop the advancement of human kind and sort all our shit out first, doesn't work that way though. (Russia is in the middle of a war, sorry, special military operation, and they managed to find time to crash a lander on the moon)

There's always this type of concern trolling when this happens. Creating high tech high paying jobs in the country IS a way to raise it up, isn't it? And do you even know how much poverty in India has fallen over the last few years?

Abject poverty is even more through the floor. This isn't the India of the 90s. Yeah it has problems but if all it did was feed the poor and not invest in high tech programs like this, nothing would change, and the poverty rate would have stayed flat.

India raised half a billion people out of poverty in recent years, and keeping high tech jobs in the country is a good way to raise the average salary, keep a bunch of big brains running around in the country which benefits everyone, etc

The mission has already discovered some new information about the south pole, including that the temperature variation with depth and the insulating properties of the lunar regolith that are both positive for building habitation structures there.
