Interesting take on why Nintendo is so protective of it's IP

Never thought of it this way. Thought it was interesting.

TL:DR.... For the people who aren't interested enough yet comment.

It's not really about greed. It's more about preservation of their IP and not driven by profits but driven by a past that broke their trust and it will take a generation where the new guard supplants the old guard and maybe we will see a different Nintendo in regards to how they handle their IP. But it's not irrational and it's mainly misunderstood.

If you already watched it can you at least provide a blurb for everyone else? 30 minutes is a long time to give to a youtuber I've never heard of.

I mean their IP brings alot of money, and also the main reason why people go for Nintendo.

At least post the tl;dr instead of asking people to watch a 30+ minute video.

They became more protective after the infamous 80s Super Mario Bros movie(and i guess other things like the Zelda CD1 games and tv shows) , after that Nintendo had to be more involved in any production.their main focus is videogames not storytelling so they worked on that, until recently were they found appropiate partners for a movie lineup

I just love how surprised people are about Nintendo (or anyone, really) being defensive about their intellectual property.
Like, no shit. What is everyone expecting?
I'm begging people to read on why IPs, patents, and copyright exist and why they're not interchangeable.

Protects their IP aggressively:

Lets IP be used however people want:

Don't really have 30 mins to watch this but Nintendo is more IP focused than any other console maker.
Playstation and Xbox have cool exclusives and Iconic characters, but Nintendo IS Mario/Zelda/Animal Crossing/Pokemon, etc. It's why they can get away with selling Mario Kart 8 for full price nearly 9 years after it originally launched, because many new Switch owners will absolutely want to play the first party titles regardless of price:

Their first party stuff destroys everything MS/Sony put out in sales numbers and they do so without big sales or discounts.

True. It was crazy looking at Animal Crossing beating TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima combined sales. But Sony is getting there in my opinion. The gap is getting closer than the previous generations at least.

Their IP is what gives them a competitive advantage. Protect that with every lawyer of your being.

Closer but not really quite there.
What's truly impressive about Nintendo is the combination of high software sales + almost no sales or discounts.

Because yeah it's still impressive that Spiderman + Miles morales combined have sold 30+ million copies, but I bought Spiderman Ps4 less than a year after it launches for $20. Meanwhile a game like Smash Bros ultimate has sold just as much but most of it at full price and even when it's discounted it doesn't really drop bellow $40, and it also has like $55 worth of DLC which I'm sure a lot of people are getting

I agree with you. But outside of stuff like pokemon (who printed money for decades at this point ) Sony is getting there. We are increasingly seeing digital games selling more than in retail. Sony don't need to compete following old rules. Yes Nintendo ability to retain games prices high for years is amazing. But the cost to this is high too. They continue to put ads on TV worldwide for years old games for example. And limited themselves to 1 game per console per series when is was easier to make more than one per generation. Look at Splatoon : 3 games in 8 years. This is slow for most publishers but fast for Nintendo. I think that this series either had price cuts faster than most Nintendo games or if they didn't they should have. In the coming generations they will also continue to feel the difficulties that go with HD games development.

What I am trying to say is that when games are mostly physical a high price to retail means that more money go to Nintendo than the resale market but when it is mostly digital there is not the same need to maintain high prices. Unless a way to resell games digitaly is offered in the future of course. And Sony upped the price of their games with the PS5. This and the special editions means that they can sell games like GOW ragnarok almost twice the price of a Switch game. They can then make discounts and found new clients. It will be interesting to see how the Switch 2 will be ...

And again: yes Nintendo is on top. But not that much outside of OVNI like Pokemon.

They can get away with it because they make a product that's actually worth the price and they don't care that gamers are cheap, entitled fucks who think games should be 50% off a month after release.

Nintendo games cost a shit load of money to make of course they would protect their IPs. Microsoft losing mass effect is a good example. People don't really talk about that ME1 was originally a 360 exclusive.

Are you completely forgetting about the PS1 generation?

Edit:. Apparently I am. I'm thinking more third parties than Sony. They didn't really sell anything compared to Nintendo.

Yeah, I would think their CDI adventure and Mario is Missing, didn't go down very well. Burnt for life. Just look how well Luigi's Mansion 3 turned out, that's the quality they want. A lot of pride there for sure. Eventually the old guard will need to carry the torch.
