It took 217 days for GTAIV to come to PC, it is now over 200 days since GTAV came out

The issue with PC gaming is people buy your game once and ownership/access from that point is everlasting. This makes video game executives really sad, because it means that once the pc market is saturated with your game there is much less money to be made from re-releases on future consoles. Rockstar has already sold their game to more than 30 million people on ps3/360, and they want to do it again on ps4/xbone. In six years or so, when the next console generation comes, they want to sell their game again. Please understand the immense pressure these video game companies are working under. We can't expect them to create new exciting games all the time. There is a time for creating new exciting games, but there is also a time for exploiting your most loyal customers for the easy buck. It is common sense!

If it's anywhere near as a shoddy-ass bullshit product as IV was, not releasing would be better.

I'd still rather play the PC version of GTAIV than the PS3/360 version of GTAIV. It may have been a horrible port, but the PS3 and 360 versions were worse.

what is this?

Maybe R* said "fuck a PC version" this time. Probably hard at work on the next installment in the GTA series.

The issue with PC gaming is people buy your game once and ownership/access from that point is everlasting.

How is this not true for console games?

Why do people even want this any more? Rockstar hates PC and they are bad at the platform. Social club is just terrible and its pretty obvious they just don't care. If you haven't played it, just get it on PS3 or 360 stop waiting for what could never come.
Mods, mods, mods. Also mods.

So insanely negative i feel dirty and want to shower myself.

The single(?) best selling game ever not coming to a platform that is more alive than ever before? That would be illogical from any perceivable perspective.

Waiting for a release simultaneously with an improved next-gen version? Waiting with an announcement untill very late in order to not hurt current sales? Waiting for a technically difficult port to be realised? Now those are reasons i can understand.

We'll see what it is, but i'm pretty sure it's coming at some point.

What they're saying makes sense though. While it might make sense to release it from a business perspective, Rockstar is absolute trash at making PC games and they have a poor record on the platform over the past while.

Because GTAV is a game that would hugely benefit from a next gen/PC port.

Looking at V's Jacked up online for what, three months? Then add that to the exploration (if not explicit development) of the modern console versions and you've easily got an extra 6-10 months of turn over than the transition IV had from PS3/360 - PC.

I see it coming out eventually, so just find other games to play and don't worry about it too much. I've stopped caring for now and will probably pick it up when it's super cheap on PC instead since actively waiting gets boring.

i was reading and agreeing until:

I just did a video on this very same thing a couple of days ago.

If we look at this here:

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/06/rockstar-red-dead-redemption-on-pc-isnt-happening-not-viable/

In a Q&A on the company's blog, Rockstar explains, "All we can say is that whenever it is viable (technically, developmentally and business-wise) for us to release a game for PC (or any other particular platform) – we will and we usually do; unfortunately, that is just not the case 100% of the time for all platforms."

Somehow, R* came to the conclusion that the PC isn't a viable platform for RDR. Except, I mean, ya know, PC gamers love open world games and there was a large demand for the game on PC.

If they feel this way about RDR, why would we ever get GTAV? On top of the dates/times the OP mentioned of course...

I'm starting to feel GTAV isn't going to happen.

That is pretty much how I go about things.

I have plenty of great games to play, so I don't mind waiting until your game is $5.

If your company layers DRM on top? I have plenty of objectively better games that cater to the consumers.

My guess it that Rockstar wants to fix GTA Online before releasing it on another platform.. And that's no easy task. The game currently is a mess, with bad servers, lots of cheaters and lack of content.

I believe that when they solve this problems and release the rest fo the content (HEISTS!), it'll make its way to PC (and hopefully next gen consoles, but I wouldn't bet on that).

I don't know all the online issues for GTAV. If I had to guess, dedicated servers would solve a lot of problems.

Is such a thing even possible?

Yep. I own GTAIV on PS3, 360 and PC. It was definitely worse when I bought GTAIV on PC (about January/February 2009 a couple of months after the PC release) and the gap only got wider as more power was available to bruteforce your way past the lack of optimisation.

The console versions looked terrible and performed terribly.

The negativity is aimed at Rockstar not GTA V. Believe me I would love a PC/next gen port, and after the technical awesomeness of Max Payne 3 on PC I was ready to believe they could do a day and date port for GTA V, but they just didn't. I don't pretend to be an expert on game development, that's for sure, but you should try to maximize your investment by getting to as many customers as possible. Rockstar isn't a logical developer, they are the last AAA studio to continually take a dump on the PC. GTAIV was a mess on Windows, RDR never came because of reasons, LA Noire came so late after the consoles it was almost irrelevant and Max Payne 3 turned out to be one of the best PC ports in recent memory after a brief 2-3 week delay. It's not that the port isn't there, its the fact that they are just flippant towards their PC audience.

RDR is a lost cause. In the past. Gta v is happening. What do you think all the trailers and commercials for the game were running on?

That's not a very good indication whether it will or won't happen. We can point to a lot of games that didn't come to PC, but, it was clear that the trailers/commercials had them running on high end PCs.

Sure, including many first party console titles. Difference is, in this case there will be a PC sku and a ps4one sku in future.

We've lost so many good men and women in the last 200 days that I don't see how we could possibly expect a PC version at this point. Too much has changed and the world has moved on.

Wow. That is a long time with no official announcement. I have just assumed that since the prior GTA games have come to PC, so would GTAV. But now you have me worried.

Maybe it's still selling well on last-gen consoles? Maybe they're prioritizing PS4/XB1 development? Maybe they have some major plans for a new edition? Maybe they're focusing on additional content? IIRC Rockstar doesn't do much of anything for E3, so I don't think that will make much difference to this conversation. I'd like to play it at some point, but I can wait until the fall and see where a PC version stands. If we don't hear anything by then, then we know it's a no-go.

RDR is a lost cause.

Maybe the old console builds, but 12.5 million units for Red Dead Redemption increases the likelihood of doing a 1080p version for PS4/XBone - in this scenario, the chances of a PC receiving said 1080p port would increase.

Why would I buy a Rockstar game on PC when it has the worst tied in program behind GFWL and uPlay?

With Steam, most publishers realized that they do not need DRM and now they are fairly rare.

FF7 and FF8 are the most recent external DRM with the game I can remember.

Rockstar shareholders would benefit the most from a timed exclusive release on PS4/XB1, then the PC version following suit in 1-2 months. PC is the Netflix of gaming for AAA action games like GTAV, it's the lowest tier in revenue, but the super long tail makes up for it.

I'm still fine with waiting till R* makes an announcement. If it doesn't comes to PC then I'm not gonna worry about it because there are plenty of other games that can takes its place

Join the console master race

Waiting for the definitive version is the gaming equivalent of holding off sex till you meet "the one".

As a PC gamer you are surrounded by a bunch of cheap and easy dates that will give it up quickly, it's not hard to wait.

No, I think the combined userbase of folks who have a ps4/xbone that would be willing to double dip when this port releases will be smaller than the userbase on PC willing to purchase it. Furthermore, the "tier" of which PC gaming makes up the sales of any particular multi platform game varies from game to game, and is not bound by some mystical set of rules dictating that it is going to be the lowest selling.

I've always had a feeling that RDR was a lost cause on PC because of the absolute development hell R* went through just to get it out on consoles.

Development of the game happened during a lot of turmoil at the company and most of the top people who worked on the game quit the company soon after it was released. I also remember reading something at the time from people who worked on the game claiming it was a miracle they got it running at all on 360/PS3 and the game code was literally held together by a shoestring. I have a feeling it never saw a PC release because of the fact the game code was a mess, couldn't be ported easily, and the people who actually built the game all left.

I hope they don't spend too much energy porting it to ps4 /x1. Lets get you pc guys a copy and move on to real next gen titles.
