Jason Ronald: FPS Boost support won't be coming to more Xbox games "in the immediate future”

Sounds like they've run the gamut as far as the BC tricks go that they currently have available. They could always find a new way to make this work on titles that didn't work before, or they could develop new techniques that could apply to a different set of games. Just allowing games from 4 generations of consoles to be played on one box is huge in and of itself. The bonus upgrades are just icing on the cake.

If I was going to lament any particular part of BC on Xbox it would just be that it is too bad that more of the OG Xbox games didn't get preserved. But, I understand that the licensing and all that was probably a nightmare on those.
I'm thinking also of the many xbox one games that are languishing from 30 fps and 900p or even 1080p. Games like Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, or even regular old 3rd party games like dishonored 2 for example. Also, whatever happened to the promised Gears 1 Ultimate 4k/60 patch that MS made a big deal about prior to the series x releasing?

It's baffling to me that they've just decided to shut the BC/fps boost/resolution boost program down when it's one of the few things that separates Xbox from the competition and they know the demand is still there.

Also, there are SO many games in need of resolution boosts. Microsoft is all about having this open, PC like ecosystem. Well consoles are so behind PC in BC. MS was gaining sales and good will due to them trying to bridge that gap.

This is very disappointing. No two ways around it.

You can't just mess with other people's code and IP if you're a big company! Rights issues are huge because if you get it wrong you're likely to get sued for more money than the actual thing's worth many times over. The further you go back the more treacherous it gets because the rights themselves may have become disputed in some way (say the original creator has gone bust and ownership has passed on to a third entity), or although there may seem to be a clear path to make an agreement often sublicensors (say of music, brand, or likeness) may have some say if their original contract didn't accommodate digital distribution.

This latter thing is something that has no doubt really hamstrung Sony, as deals cut on all PS1 and most PS2 games would never have considered digital as an option and the original contractual details would have factored this in.

Its truly impressive what MS have managed to achieve because frankly, the sheer effort and expense of untangling rights is enough to legitimately put people off even trying. The smart part was the way they've managed to do so much without involving the original developers and publishers, because ultimately is all about the calculation of opportunity cost versus anticipated return. FROM might be very proud of their Otogi releases, but I highly doubt they'd think for a second about expending resources on bringing back titles that weren't strong sellers even in their day.

The one game that really needs X enhancements at least is Batman Arkham Knight. Please don't abandon and continue.

Just look at how it breathed life into the first Assassin's Creed. Batman AK would look phenomenal.
