Jehovah's Witness missionaries just straight up lying.

So I just got some Jehovah's Witness missionaries knocking on my door (first time I've experienced this, maybe this is just their modus operandi) and they just straight up lied about who they were and what they were doing. Not even something like being a bit dishonest about the reality of their organization. They told me they were from an organization that helps the deaf/blind and that they were canvassing the neighborhood looking for deaf/blind people who might need help. At this point I still thought they actually were from such an organization, but then she pulls out a JW flyer and points to the big JW.ORG and says this website has lots of great information for deaf/blind people. Jehovah, would I have liked to see the look on my face the moment she pulled that one. Ultimately they just hand me the flyer and leave, so thankfully not too much trouble for me. But like, what the fuck was that?

Sounds like a pretty normal encounter with them. I ended up kinda being a dick to a couple of them one time, after that they stopped knocking on my door. Haven't heard from them in about five years

The same couple has been going around your neighborhood for over five years?

Edit I guess I'm misreading this post, sorry I'm out of it lol

They were not "straight up lying".
People have different approaches when they go door to door, there is not one template.
Some people's faith is in the fact that deaf and infirm people will be healed when they are in paradise.
Usually these people have had family members who have suffered or have been through hardships.
Try harder to try and stir up the typical anti religious hate for thread jollies.

I told them I worship the devil and sent them away. I haven't had one bother me since.

When I was a teen they visited my neighborhood very often. Though Ive never really had any religious affiliation, I eventually learned answering the door and just saying "I'm Jewish." got them to go real quick with a "Ah, have a nice day." type response.

They probably were doing exactly that and most likely had materials for the blind with them. You know, sometimes they focus on one message or another. But great thread, lots to discuss here.

Is this a thing? I might have fucked up.

I mean they might revisit you at some point to pester you, hoping you read the pamphlet and hope that maybe you might want to join up.

In which case they do, you can very easily tell em "Nope, not interested".

I put all the JW flyers I get on my fridge. I have a flyer that discusses profanity and I actually got a hand written, 3 paragraph letter talking about their religion and my potential role with them and the community. Good shit.

I answered the door once to a religious group, not sure who, wearing a thrasher skate t-shirt that has a giant pentagram on the chest.

Safe to say I got some funny looks and they walked away to never be seen again.

They were at best misrepresenting the main focus of their organization and the truth of their intent. I'm not one who would mock or look down on the religious, but this was not an honest act.

Jehovas Witnesses are pretty obnoxious around here. They rang my door for months and months. I always saw them on the door camera but never answered them so they just came back the next week at exactly the same time lol.

They tried to get his attention/recruit him under false pretenses. It is dishonest, ergo calling it lying isn't wrong.

Not that JWs need any help in stirring hate against them. Denying life-saving blood transfusions because of their stupid religion does plenty on its own.

One came to my door the one day, as I opened the door my over 100 pound German Shepherd puppy(he's under a year old)happily got between me and him. He took one look at the dog, said he'll come back some other time and fast walked away... I gave him extra food that night

I accidentally answered the door one time wearing nothing but butt huggers. It's not a pretty sight. So I didn't realize until the door was open and they were standing there kind of like "uhhh...." and then they turned around and left. No trouble since then, hooray for accidents.

Nonsense. They would say something like "We're out today speaking to the deaf and blind members of your community, sharing helpful materials". If you said "Are you a religious group" and they said "No", you would have a point, but you and I both know that didn't happen.

There are enough real issues with JWs (such as blood transfusions, mentioned above) that there's no need to resort to "they lied about what they were doing" or "I answered the door in my devil shirt, haha!" if you want to have a real discussion about it.

You took their pamphlet OP, now you have been marked.
latest
.

I just told them point blank "I am not interested but thank you" and handed the pamphlet back to them. They try to dress it up, but it's fine, they are doing what they deeply believe in, can't fault them for trying to sell it.

Why would you accept the flyer? Don't give or take anything from door to door salesmen. Like the types that want to see your energy bill so they can screw you over by taking over your contract.

These fuckers used to canvas the old folks home where I used to work, preying on the elderly and confused in an attempt to get at their assets.

I'm not anti religion but their organisation is shady as fuck. And that's probably not even the tip of the iceberg.

Sometimes I take The Watchtower from the JWs at the train station if I have nothing else to read on my way home.

There were a few Jehovah's Witness people who were going door to door a few years ago in my neighborhood, everyone on our street was super fed up so we all printed out tags with our religions on them and hung them on our doors. They've been back only briefly since. (Our Street was hilarious because it went Catholic, Buddhist, Atheist, Unitarian, Farrakhaner, and Devil-Worshipping Heathens, fun times.)

Answering the door in a pentagram shirt is a hilarious way of telling them you don't want to have a real discussion about it, haha.

JWs and Mormon missionaries prey on the kindness of strangers. Any outward sign of kidness you give them is seen as interest in what they're selling.

My wife had the local JWs convinced she was interested just because she didn't want to come off as rude or mean. She had me talk to them the next time they showed up to express her disinterest. They told me they only wanted to talk to her. I think they imagined me as a brute who angrily kept his wife away from them, lol. Nothing could be further from the truth. She's just too nice. I do not have that problem.

Also nonsense. JWs are one of the few groups that don't have forced/coerced/mandatory donations at all. No collection plates, nothing is asked. Money is the least of their concerns, the elders/people running the congregation aren't paid at all for it. They were surely there, but taking money from the elderly was not their motivation.

"I answered the door holding a severed head, ahahahahaha~"

You know, guys, you can simply tell them you're not interested and ask them not to return and that'll be that. They have a fairly stringent "do not call/knock" list they adhere to while out in service.

Edit:

Can we ban them from doing that? Or even ban their cult altogether?

It's no more a cult than any other organized religion.

Again, no they didn't.
It is not a recruitment drive.
They are preaching about the subject that they chose. Period.
They may focus only on that subject.
One of my exes parents were JWs and her mother was deaf, so they focused on the deaf.
They had a small group of deaf and some interpreters that went out, and would look for deaf or hearing impaired in neighborhoods and often people would refer then to friends and neighbors in other addresses who were deaf.
They did not ignore people who were not deaf.

Pretty much this.
You only make yourself look like a jackass, on this board and to the person at the door and I assure you that you do not shock them because they have dealt with worse than you can come up with in your totally unoriginal attempts.
Just say "hey, sorry not interested can you please not come back and take me off your list" and like magic it's done
Being civil is such a foriegn thing to far too many people.

That is actually something they do. In my area there are a couple Sign Language congregations, and since their ministry is so specialized, they canvas the area to specifically find those who are deaf so they can present them with information from the bible. In some cases, they leave pamphlets so that you can direct anyone you know with those needs to the website.

There is nothing secret or shady about it, their ministry is just much more specialized than, say, your local English congregation.

Perhaps "straight up lying" is too strong, but I do feel that the way they presented themselves was grossly dishonest. Implicitly they seem to be seeking out the misfortunate to join them. And they might well provide lots of good help to the deaf/blind members of their organization (the pamphlet does mention videos of the Bible in various sign languages and such), but if they really wanted to be honest they would have lead with the fact that they are a religious organization, seeking members of the neighborhood who were deaf/blind and could use their help.

As it was they never even actually mentioned they were JW or any sort of religious organization.

Ever since I wasted the time of two JW people that came to my door and pissed them both off I haven't had them come near my place since.

I believe the conversation ended a little something like this:

JW: "If you had no intention of taking us seriously why did you listen?"

Me: "I wanted to hear what your approach was."

JW: "You made us waste a lot of time!"

Me: "Well that's not a very Christian way to react."

Well I mean if they said that upfront, they wouldn't get nearly as much attention from people. Hell you yourself probably would've stopped the conversation from the beginning had it started with "Hi, we're Jehovah's Witnesses going around hoping to help the blind and teach them the good word".

I tend to save all the flyers I get too, also all the chick tracts. However I haven't gotten many lately basically due to a law that forbids door to door selling (religious missionaries, NGO's etc. included) and because my apartment building decided to keep the entry doors locked at all time.

I sometimes intentionally go to get pamflets and stuff from missionaries. Great toilet reading material.
