Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Sorry, but I've used all the competition. Wii U is incredibly slow in comparison. Just loading settings takes 5-10 seconds. It's instantaneous on every other console. Ditto for the eshop.

Settings is indeeed the slowest part of the Wii U UI. It used to take 30 seconds to go there. But practically except for the first set up, since launch, I never went to settings except for the times I wanted to change the country (EU here) for the eshop.

As for eshop itself, it's a webpage, it loads as fast as a webpage, sometimes instant sometimes takes 5 seconds, depending on the network status (or if you already download something).

It is not slow, it is not fast, it's functional.

That's actually a repost of BGR's story...which, and this fucking kills me, is point-for-point inaccurate.

They suggest NSMBU is the newly released Mario game and that it only sold 13k this week (edit: a few weeks ago, I missed). That's why the Wii U is dead.
I find it bizarre that a year-old game selling still selling 13,000 copies in a week, in Japan only, is considered poor. That's ~$70,000 retail revenue. People in a single country of 1.25m population spent $70,000 on a single year-old game for a "dead system". To top if off, they spent $500,000 or more on buying just the "dead system" for that week!

Not to be rude, but you can't be serious. The UI for settings, Miiverse, the main UI, the eshop, the settings in the eshop, etc etc are all different. There's zero cohesion. On 360 it's all the same UI. On PS4 it's all the same UI. I'm willing to bet that the speed issues Wii U has doing pretty much everything is caused by this disjointed approach to OS development. Everything appears to be its own entity and thus needs to be loaded as such. There's no flow whatsoever.

I haven't used 360's most recent UI's or PS4 at all so I can't speak for them. What I can say that Wii U's UI's current state is among the best I have used. Is it missing stuff? Absolutely. Could it be faster? It always could. I'm just saying that it's starting to be on a state that's good enough for a video game console. GamePad does salvage a lot here. While I'm booting my TV and receiver (+ changing the right channel for both) I can have the game all loaded and ready to go thanks to the GamePad. Can't do that on PS3 where I can only start interacting with the UI once TV starts showing picture.

Also you have to be reasonable. 360 doesn't even have a internet browser Wii U uses for eShop (AFAIK) and Miiverse. PS4 on the other hand has 3.5GB GDDR5 RAM reserved for the OS. Wii U uses slower RAM and only reserves 1GB to the OS.

Hopefully picking up a Wii-U off Craigslist, is there any issues clearing the system and setting up an account with a used Wii-U?

I know nothing about Nintendo ID's or the like and how they work.
I didn't see this answered, but in the settings there is a complete wipe option. Resets it to new.

I had a ps3 for quite some time and i think the wiiu is really inferior on the ui in some things. Touch helps, but having to wait to enter on my friends list, having to go to miiverse to send a message... Its awful. Ps3 was much easier.

Apart from that, i dont have many problems with it.

My favorite aspect of Wii U is being able to mess about with it on the GamePad even when the console is not plugged into the TV (b/c PS3 is using second HDMI at the moment). It's real nice having Off TV play and the second screen to avoid switching cables, in many cases. I'm able to play Guacamelee and download Toki Tori 2 at the same time!

it should be noted that the internet browser is just amazing!

But... that's a gimmick! :-D

(About voice nav) Yep, sorry but watching streams from XB1 that is just dumb to me when you can actually just press buttons, and a lot of times it does not work, making you sound even dumber.

Pretty much the Internet Wii U browser makes up for everything else, that shit is fast and convenient.

I just traded COD: Ghosts (there's so much wrong with the MP) for "Wonderful 101". I hope it's not a mistake. I didn't like the demo but loved Metal Gear Rising, Vanquish, Madworld.....uhm...yeah I love Platinum Games in general ;)
Won't be able to play it in the next few days though.

You made the right decision. The Wonderful 101 is, as of 5:18pm est november 21st, 2013, the best game on the WiiU.

That'll probably change after the next 7 hours though.

The W101 demo is not a good intro to the game. Also, the game might take a couple hours to really "click". But man oh man, once it does...

Sure! YouTube as well. The ability to have video feed on the screen while looking at some other sites on the GamePad is just awesome. Twitch is great too (although I don't know if you can do the same video on the TV+browsing on GamePad as with YouTube, didn't test).

Sounds like you made the best choice possible. The demo just... sucks. Should have never made one.

watching youtube vids while searching for the next one!

When people buy Wii U systems used these days do they still sometimes find that they can download the games other people bought like we heard about after it launched a year ago or did they find a way to put an end to that? I haven't heard it mentioned in a while.

Unless the person formatted their Wii U before selling it I think it should still work that way, hell that's how it works with the 3DS. The game might not be installed on the device but if you go to the eshop and check the "my downloads" list you'll be able to find every piece of purchased content from that device by the previous owner.

I would choose the Wii U UI over my 360 any and every day of the week.

Yup. All other UIs might be faster at the moment. But the Wii U (and Wii!) UIs are the most functional and they get me where I want to go the easiest. Since I almost never have to go to the settings menu, I don't care about that load screen too much. There's no denying that the loads are annoying though. But still, to me: function>speed.

It's so weird to me being so much into Nintendo in recent months.

I grew up with PlayStation and still loves those consoles, heck, I love ALL video games, but Nintendo have just hit me with 3DS and latest the Wii U.

I recently bought Wii Party U but the mini games disappoint me, and doesn't make much sense for 2 players. Nintendoland had been great fun with the gf, and now I also got Wii Sports Club; which is the best game ever because of bowling. I really can't stop playing that game.

Such great games, and I haven't even gotten around to any of the Nintendo mainstay games like New Super Mario Bros, Pikmin 3, Zelda: Wind Waker or the likes.

At least I also got myself a nunchuck after having bought a Wii Reemote Plus earlier this week, and now I can play The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the first time! I wonder how it'll look on my HDTV. :)

Also need to get Super Mario Galaxy again, as I sold it after 2 hours some years ago.

Then you have failed as a parent.

Just kidding. My 11-year-old daughter is a huge 3DS gamer, but we haven't played much on the Wii U lately. Pikmin 3 is unopened, Rayman Legends is barely cracked, and SM3DW might be a Christmas present. But, if Nintendo would just throw some money at Notch and get Minecraft, I wouldn't be able to stop her from playing.

Wii U getting Minecraft would be amazing. I would buy that in a heartbeat with decent Gamepad Crafting/Inventory/Off-Screen play... Damn.

I feel like ps3 is much better than both wii u and ps4

It's funny - I never get to the Nintendo main franchises.

When I bought a Gamecube it were all about Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Resident Evil 4 and Eternal Darkness. But I have never played Super Smash Bros. Melee, Pikmin or even Super Mario Sunshine.

Then Wii came and I loved Another Code R, Wii Sports and Zack & Wiki. Yet I barely played Super Mario Galaxy, never touched Galaxy 2, have never tried Super Smash Bros. Brawl and only played Mario Kart Wii at an airport for 5 minutes.

Actually I did play Wind Waker and Twilight Princess for 2-4 hours.

Now I got Wii U and "only" have Wii Party U, Nintendoland and Wii Sports Club as my Nintendo games. Hopefully I get around to some of those huge franchises this time. I know I want Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World, and I also wanna try out Pikmin 3 for the first time.

On 3DS, it's another story, as I currently have Pokémon Y, Super Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion 2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf etc.

Nintendo you touched my heart <3

All those great games that you have either barely played or not even touched.

Man, you missed some great games. Mario Galaxy/Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash/Wii, F-Zero GX, Wave Race Blue Storm, Smash Brothers, Skyward Sword, Donkey Kong Country Returns...at least you're playing Wind Waker (HD?) and Twilight Princess. :)
aaaand now you can enjoy the new Mario and Pikmin. And DKC tropical Freeze + Mario Kart 8 are just around the corner.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games ever made though. A new exclusve Resident Evil for WiiU would make me so happy. Resident Evil 4 (with updated visuals and gamepad support)...do it Capcom...DO IT.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did in some areas. The Wii U stock seems the same as it did during launch at my local stores. Even if they did limit the stock, I would think that if the item began selling that they would request for more to be shipped. There's still plenty of time before Christmas.

I hope Gamestop gets more stock in for tomorrow, the Mario and Luigi bundle were in the top ten of their best sellers list until it sold out, even the Zelda bundle is sold out.

Wind Waker lost my interest real quick and I only found the fishing in Twilight Princess to be fun.

Though, when I played Ocarina of Time for the first time on 3DS it convinced me that I need to give the franchise another chance. And so now, I'm probably gonna try out Skyward Sword until the Xbox event.

The nice thing is, I can buy all those great games for cheap now. :)

Oh yeah, I remember being CRAZY about Mario Kart 64, F-Zero and Goldeneye on N64 at the club back in the day.

I can understand quitting Super Mario Galaxy after two hours. I should clarify that I mean I can understand giving up on a great game after just a few hours, not that SMG is bad (I think it is the best Mario game). I have personally given up on some fantastic games after just trying them for a bit, only to return months later and discover how truly great they are. Donkey Kong Country and Ape Escape are some examples.

I ordered Just Dance 2014 to play with my family. It was on sale at Amazon and I still had prime left, so it arrived already. We've played all night so far. It's pretty fun just dancing even if the scoring seems random. It doesn't use motionplus, so it's all waggle. I don't really pay much attention to my scoring, but it can imagine many people out there just sitting on the couch waggling a perfect score.

Yeah totally, it isn't because the games are bad, I just get bored of most games real fast. :)

I can't agree that the PS3's UI is better than the Wii U's. I like the XMB, it's quick and usable, but overall not as interesting as the U's.

The PS4 on the other hand - that interface is amazing. So fluid, you don't realize it until you do something like go to Killzone in your game list and it gives you the option to do things jump directly into a recent multiplayer mode or a campaign save right from the PS4 menu. Things like reviews and recent friend activities aren't partitioned off either. Nintendo could learn a lot from how usable it is.

But the U's browser still beats the PS4 's though. That one is way more clunky, and Sony's can't compete with the comfortable stylus/touchpad text entry. Even if I use the Vita as a second screen.

The Wii U UI is ridiculously poor. I had to go through a bunch of different screens just to download a song for Just Dance, and then to add it to the song list, the game actually has to reboot.

I received a friend invite. The only place I saw it was in the friend list. Of course, the friends list takes a while to open. Then, to see anyone's profile from the friend list, it launches Miiverse, which takes a while to open. Then, when you exit out, friends list relaunches, then exiting that, you finally get back to the game.

I would have thought they learned from the Wii not to make every system function it's own stand-alone app. It's disappointing and frustrating. It makes me not even want to use these features.

I prefer the Xbox 360s UI over the PS3 and Wii U. It seems much more seamless and takes less time for me to access my friends or start chatting with people. At times it can be a little sluggish, but it's served me well.

I completely agree. It's ridiculous. And don't get me started on the uselessness of Miiverse, I know everyone loooooves it, but it's just stupid kids saying "YAY!!!" and "WHATS UR FAVORIT ZALDA" all over the plaza screen, and drawings (woop dee doo). The main screen window panes that the Wii had is just ok too.

MAN! Skylanders Swap Force was only $37.99 on amazon lightning deal and sold out in an INSTANT for the Wii U. for a system that "doesnt sell" it sure sold out quick...grrr

Just no. That´s just plain wrong. Also Miiverse is not the plaza.

I just got Mario 3d World and my brother and sister in law are coming over for thanksgiving. With my wife that makes 4 player mario for a week and TURKEY. Life can't get better.

That's more on the game side rather than on Wii U UI, don't you think?

Actually most of the friend related thing can be done directly in Miiverse: you get friend request notifications, view profile, accept requests and it is all fast and simple. The only time I needed Friend list until now was to block some laggy players in Wii Sports Club.

Miiverse is great. Art Academy and its board pacify my girlfriend like nothing else. Miiverse is a gaming community where everybody's not an asshole all the time. This is like black magic to me.
