Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Just got my Wii U last night and I'm loving the hell out of it! Is there a thread where people are adding eadh other as friends?

I need some friends on this thing :)

NNID: INCITEMAYBE

so with SM3DW out now is there any anecdotal evidence from retail stores? in other threads people said it got destroyed by xbone launch hype.

I went in to get it a minute ago and I was one of three people picking it up. No one for XB1s. I had a few people on my FB feed getting it as well and I don't make my friends through gaming. The game doesn't look forgotten at least, which is a good thing. Hopefully that means it has some legs.

That's more on the game side rather than on Wii U UI, don't you think?
Nope. All the hassle to buy just a DLC track is on the Wii U side. I bought another track today and I think I went through eight screens of stuff just to buy it. It is made even more absurd because instead of just buying the item, it forces you to checkout and deposit the exact amount into your account first, then it sends you back to the item screen where you basically redo all the steps. Then back into the game, then quit the game, then patch the game.

No wonder so few third parties want to offer DLC. Just teaching your users how to do it is a pain. This game actually came with a separate pamphlet with instructions.

You can deposit enough money on your eshop account so you don't need to deposit each time.

And a lot of games require restart for applying DLC even on Steam. And I thought you can add songs in Just Dance via Uplay too, but maybe I'm wrong.

Just bought the system and have a couple of Qs:

I got NSMB U, Luigi U, Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, W101. Any other Wii U games worth playing? I see Zombi U is only $22 at Amazon right now. Is that a legit, good game if you own all the other systems and have access to top-quality zombie games already?

Next up, do all Wii controllers work with Wii U? I lent out my Wii along with a Classic Controller Pro and Wiimotes. Should I grab that stuff back. I know the Wiimotes work but what about the CC Pro?

Third, Donkey Kong Country Returns is probably the only Wii game worth playing that I never got around to buying/playing. Should I pick it up since Wii U is bc for $22 or should I get the 3DS port for $27. 60fps->30fps sounds pretty shitty for a 2d platformer, but I hear the 3DS one has better controls because the Wii one has motion controls (which I hate) and 3DS one has extra levels.

Check the recommendations in this thread. You can't go wrong with any of the games listed there.

Yes. Yes, you should. CC Pro too.

Some people prefer the Wii version, others like the 3DS one better. Personally, the 3DS one is my favorite. That way, I can have a Donkey Kong on the go and one on the big screen whenever Tropical Freeze comes out.

Wii one has 60 fps and with WiiU it will look even better

3DS one has portability and some additional stuff.

I now own a WiiU. Since it seems like this is now a general wiiu thread, I have some questions about multiplatform games that I'd appreciate some input on:

- Is the wiiu version of MH3 U fine?

-Do any FPS exist that offer pointer controls?

-Are any of the following 3rd party games disastrous? I'll probably buy as many of them as I can within the constraints of what I can find on sale. Stop me if there's a stinker.
Need for speed
Both arkhams
both assassin's creeds
Deus Ex
Tekken
Injustice
Epic mickey 2
ninja gaiden 3
Splinter Cell Blacklist

I'll buy the obvious exclusives like w101 pikmin and zombiu for sure.

This doesn't help picking one lol :P

How bad are the motion controls in the Wii one? I'd rather have 60fps than extra content but if the 3DS one controls better (though you think it'd control worse since 30fps) that would be the main reason for me to go with that.

Montser Hunter is amazing. Buy it. PM me if you need help online.

I have splinter cell and Deus EX. And beat both ACs on them.

DE is the best version you can buy arguably.

Splinter Cell is up to par performance wise to the other console versions except online is a ghost town because of connection issues that where never fixed. Single player is fantastic but the load times can be a minute +. Luckily, in game loading after deaths or failures are only about 2 seconds.

Black Flag looked and ran fine on Wii U. 3 is a bit hazy but i had no issues.

You are good, but Epic Mickey 2 has frame rate issues plus I heard the game is not very good.

In addition to the responses I already got: hey people who have injustice or tekken: how are the online communities? I don't always have friends who like fighting games nearby.

ok, Honestly I went down wikipedia's "list of wiiu games" page and wrote down every interesting retail release. To the bottom of the list it goes. Thanks.

Just hooked mine up. It's updating right now. I like being able to put the gamepad on my lap. lol I have a bunch of wiimotes. Should I get the pro controller too? Right now I have SMW3D, New Super Mario/Luigi U, and Lego City. Do any of those games benefit from the pro controller?

i never had issues with the motion controls, beat the game with all kong letters etc. I played a little bit of the 3ds port and honestly thought it looked quite a bit worse and had framerate issues but i hear it had a whole extra world.

i only played the first world or so of the 3ds port but i would go with the wii one-probs cheaper now

Nothing really "benefits" from the pro controller since it has less features than the gamepad. Just pick which ever you are comfortable with and roll with that if given the option. Battery life is a huge difference though. I don't really feel the need for the pro personally, but if it's something you are interested in, it's an awesome controller. Very well made and comfortable.

Don't get Epic Mickey

I have nearly all off your list except splinter cell (waiting on price drop) and EM2 is my only regret, shitty port of a not great game

I updated system software and purchaed Mario 3D World. The main menu takes about 17 seconds to load when I quit the settings screen now. Is that normal? Is it because of all the people running onto the screen, where I should disable Miiverse or whatever?

People running on the screen (or "Wara Wara Plaza") happens in the background so as far as I know it doesn't really make the system slower. I think moving from settings screen is slower than other features with the console. It just isn't the fastest system under the sun.

Further research indicates this is called Warawara Plaza, and I am trying to figure out how to turn it off, lol. I changed Miiverse access in parental controls to viewing and posting restricted, but the plaza and Miis still show up.

You can't turn it off. But if you set up parental controls everything that shows in the Wara Wara plaza is moderated the same way as in Miiverse (as anyhow Miiverse is the source for it), so it should be fine.

The settings app is by far the worst contender in terms of speed, everything else should run fine.

Need for speed - best console version, it is a beautiful game
Both arkhams - the performance is not that great, but not broken. They have good gameplay implementation. The first one has in fact a great gamepad implemention
both assassin's creeds - ACIII is a good port, if you like the game. ACIV is an excellent port, look up in the next gen screenshots thread, it holds up quite well against PS4 version, except for the resolution. The digital version that I have has no visible slowdowns.
Deus Ex - best version. Great gamepad integration (maybe the best)
Tekken
Injustice
Epic mickey 2
ninja gaiden 3
Splinter Cell Blacklist - perfomance wise is not that great, but not broken (except or the online, but I didn't try it after the last patch. But I think the Gamepad implementation makes it worth

My answers with bold.

Well you it only ceases functioning when the console isn't connected to the internet. Even then it loads default messages from Nintendo from the memory instead of messages from other players from Miiverse.

I got the pro controller from the ZombiU bundle. Still, the only use i have for it is to play VC games

But its a fine controller!

Man, just ten more hours until I can finally get my Wii U (the wife is very strict when it comes to opening birthday presents). Can't wait to get into all these games. :D
Is there a GAF friends list or something like that?

Yes. Its the best version of the game. seriously it looks so good. also online and multiplayer with 3DS version is possible

CoD, ZombiU, Deus Ex, Mass Effect 3

Need for speed - not disastrous at all. best version.
Both arkhams - city has the most content of all versions and includes a lot of bonus stuff. origins is barebones and lacks online multiplayer. i think both versions are good and the gamepad is a great addition. offtv play makes it worth it.
both assassin's creeds-3 is pretty good port. 4 i havent played yet.
Deus Ex- not disastrous at all. best version. offtv play and great gamepad addons
Tekken- not disastrous at all. best version. has nintendo costumes and beach volleyball mode
Injustice- not disastrous at all. decent version,
Epic mickey 2
ninja gaiden 3 - better than vanilla 3.
Splinter Cell Blacklist - lacks local coop. however offtv play makes it worth it. i played 50 % of the time offtv.

Monster Hunter works really well. Even more so if you have a 3DS and can transfer your file between the two. It also offers local co-op if you have a 3DS copy.

As for the 3rd party games, the ones I kept up there I can personally atest to them being well done. The only real issue with them is a lack of community, but if we get enough people I'm sure we can fix that.

The fact that you're saying you "have access to top-quality zombie games already" on your other systems suggests that you might not be aware what ZombiU actually is. This is not a Left 4 Dead-style shooter. This is also not a fun Dead Island-style brawler/shooter/RPG hybrid. It's also not a Resident Evil-style cinematic zombie action game. This is a hardcore survival game. You take on more than two or three zombies at a time and you're likely toast. You'll have ammo problems. You'll rarely want to use your guns anyway because the sound attracts more face-eaters. Melee combat is designed around animation-priority, like a Demon's Souls or Monster Hunter game. You make deliberate swings with your cricket bat to take out your foes. You lose your stuff when you die. You're expected to die. You will die. A lot. Getting back to where your previous character died can be tough and invites carelessness.

In short, hell yes, this game is worth buying! It deserves to be a million seller hit even. You just need to know WHAT you're getting into and not just think this is a random fun zombie shooter.

Wii U version of MH3U is the best version you could be playing. That one's pretty obvious.

CoD is the only FPS on Wii U aside from that James Bond game from last year which was pretty shitty. ZombiU's multiplayer mode does support Wiimote aiming, though.

From your list:
Stay the hell away from Epic Mickey 2. The Wii U version is atrocious in regards to performance and lackluster use of Wii U features. If you want to play the game, go for the Wii version. Yes, I'm serious.

Splinter Cell Blacklist: lacks offline co-op. Has full 720p, great Wii U feature integration and only stutters a bit during cutscenes. A case can be made that it's the best console version depending on your priorities.

Injustice: I haven't played that. But it seems a fine game. It lacks private online matches (can't directly invite friends) though. Otherwise it's on par feature wise.

Tekken: Also haven't played it but people use that as a great example of a good Wii U port with exclusive modes, content and features not found in other versions.

Deus Ex: Best version you could be playing is on Wii U.

AC III: I'm playing through it right now. It runs fine, HUD-free screen is a wonderful thing when you still have the info you need on the touch screen.

AC IV: Won't get DLC support so know that. Runs okay, looks great. Going by reports of other users here.

Need for Speed Most Wanted U: Best (console) version you could be playing is on Wii U. Uses PC textures, runs fine, has super smart gameplay tweaks compared to other versions, Co-Driver mode is a cool local multiplayer thing in a game series that hasn't had a "real" local mp mode since forever. Comes with the first DLC pack on the disc but has no support for later DLCs released.

Batman Arkham City: Awesome GamePad integration, occasional framerate stuttering, some new texture work, all DLCs included. If you don't mind a few framedrops here and there, great version to get!

Batman Arkham Origins: Similar situation as with City though they weirdly scaled back the GamePad features in this one. Lacks multiplayer (which I haven't seen anyone praise ever so I guess not so bad?). Occasional framedrops though the Wii U version is reportedly the least buggy out of all of them (incl. PC). Unless Digital Foundry is your god, you're absolutely fine with this version.

Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge: no clue

Further research indicates this is called Warawara Plaza, and I am trying to figure out how to turn it off, lol. I changed Miiverse access in parental controls to viewing and posting restricted, but the plaza and Miis still show up.

There is nothing to turn off.

When you exit settings it effectively does a system reboot, to allow the new settings to take effect. So it's always going to be slowish

yeah zombi U is probably more similar to Resident Evil 1 or Silent Hill 1. Its hard and its actually scary.

Most of the zombi games nowadays are more focused on killing a lot of zombies in fun ways.

does anyone know how the ports of musou orochi and fist of the north star are?

I don't know about FOTNS, but WO3: Hyper was pretty good.
Has Wii U exclusive duel mode, and 4 characters/levels the PS360 didn't get. Off-tv play is always good too.

I have the 360 version as well, and didn't really notice any difference performance wise, so yeah, it's the definitive version (at least until the ultimate version comes out)

The pro controller works good for my husband in SM3DW. Controls better than the Wii remote

Are there any other Wii-U Black Friday bundles/sales besides the Best Buy one? The one there isn't that great of a deal if you ask me. I don't really need extra wiimotes.

thats true. its simple. zombis are mindless enemies that pose no challenge outside of there being many of them in many many games.

in zombi u you get bitten once and you are dead. thats what makes it soo good.

sX78i.gif

That is exactly the point. In most "zombie" games, you can change the zombies for two-legged sharks and it would make no difference (it probably would end up being better games)

And zombiU at least is a "real" zombie game. One bite and you´re out (and its also fun and scary)

-Do any FPS exist that offer pointer controls?

CoD, ZombiU, Deus Ex, Mass Effect 3

ZombiU only have pointer controls on multiplayer

Deus Ex has no pointer controls at all.
