Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

My brother couldn't wait for Christmas and got his Wii U yesterday. I hope video chat loadings have been updated since I tried it last year.

Sorry Xbone

So, I just watched IGN's Game Scoop about the Wii U, and one thing really got me thinking. Despite how awesome Wii U owners realize the Gamepad to be, has there been a game to really show it off as an integral part of the Wii U? So far, it does a lot of side things very well, but in terms of gameplay, particularly in first party games, it doesn't add much.

I mean, the map usage in Pikmin 3 was a tremendous help while using the Wiimote and Nunchuck, and the ease of switching items and the map in WWHD quickens things, but aside from the party games, I feel like they're missing out on so much potential.

Also, as an aside, what would you guys like to see happen with the gamepad? Personally, I think a pen-and-paper D&D RPG-esque game on the Wii U would be quite an amazing thing. 1-4 players playing the adventurers on wiimotes or whatever, the Dungeon Master on the gamepad doing his dungeon mastering. Heavily multiplayer-based, maybe online, but best for couch play (I think the Wii U needs to be a stalwart in keeping couch multiplayer alive). Could include solo campaign with an AI DM or you play a DM trying to kill your AI adventurers with limited resources, etc.

I really don´t want to derail this awesome thread but i want to answer this: This is the one thing that i really don´t understand with the media and the Wii U. Why the constant demand to "justify" a controller? Does the PS4 need to justify the touchpad? Does the one need to justify kinect? I feel the treatment for nintendo is not fair for this one. It´s a damn controller with a screen. It´s justified, if you really need it to be, by the whole system. The OS is build around it. Miiverse, which is always forgotten, would be impossible without the pad, the browser kicks ass because of the pad. It´s justified whithout even touching a game. For the games: The usage in ZombiU is awesome. Pikmin was awesome. Asymetrical multiplayer is awesome. Off-TV play is awesome. And yes, sometimes it´s just a map. You know what? It´s an awesome map. Why does this not count?

So, I got one of black friday, just walked in well after opening and picked one up.

I brought it to my usual hang out with the guys, and gotta say, Nintendoland's Mario Chase, Ghost Hunt, and Candy game dominated the night. A bunch of grown men screaming at each other while playing these games. The other games weren't even touched.

Anyone know of some other good mini-games similar to those 3? Those went over so well that I think I should stock up on games with more of them. Even Kung Foot was ignored by my group.

I know there is a Nintendo Land 2 in the works. I'm hoping they include more games like those 3, and perhaps with more configuration and handicapping options.

Wii Party U has a lot of mini-games for 4 players or 3 vs. 1 (similar to 4 vs 1 in the Nintendo Land). If you don't the board game type of setup you can go directly to set up a minigames contest.

If you like winter sports also Mario & Sonic at the Sochi Olympics is a good option for multiplayer party.

I imported a Wii U a few days ago for 169 Euro, hopefully it'll arrive before christmas.

Would you guys recommend 'Super Mario 3D World' to somebody who really sucks at jump 'n run games? How many checkpoints are there in every level?
Tried out "Donkey Kong Country Returns" yesterday, after 60 minutes I literally threw my Wii controller against the wall after failing to beat the first boss fight. yeah.

It does not fit my hands comfortably. :/ Those handle bumps on the backside make my hands cramp after an hour or so. :/ Using a large pillow on my lap (and letting gamepad rest on that pillow) helps though. I'm not sure how am I holding it wrong or if I just have some kind of mutant hands. :B

It's not really a huge issue for me but definately a bummer. I love my Wii U and I recently fell in love with the remote play function. We have our Wii U on our bedroom and connection pretty much reaches everywhere in our home! Yeah, the pros of having a relatively small appartment (64 square meters or 689 square foot). :D

I agree, I have a very hard time holding the gamepad comfortably... I think it's the lack of downward handles (like on a controller) in combination with the very uncomfortable back handles.

You can try to change the way you hold it. The back handle should rest on your fingers. If you get cramps, try to move your hand up or down, use other fingers to support the backhandle. At the begining I was holding it somehow different, trying also to have a good grip at the sides and I did get some cramps, but I changed the position of the hands and it now just sits naturally in my hands without any grip.

To me, the Wii U's touch screen needs to be justified because it added about $100-$150 to the Wii U price tag. Nintendo's big titles have for the most part avoided using it. Its not really necessary for games like Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, why though? Its because these games have one huge thing in common; Multiplayer. Due to the fact there is only 1 gamepad per console, these games cant add any major features to the gamepad because the 3 other players wouldnt be able to play along. In Wind Waker we saw a glimpse of what the features are going to be, but I expect the next Zelda game to fully utilize the gamepad and have puzzles that you will need to use the touch screen similar to the DS games like Phantom Hourglass.

The gamepad to me has not come close to being justified, just about every game ive been able to beat with the Pro/Wii Remote. I will admit though I have not played W101 which just from the Demo, showed me more gampad use then all of the games listed above combined.

There's a check point at the middle of a level. Also the later worlds in the game can be really challenging, there's parts where you have to jump at the right time before the platform disappears or spikes pop up. It's a blast to play though, especially with a group of people.

Anyway, SM3DW is supposed to be pretty easy, even compared to other 3D Mario games. So you'll probably be fine.

DKCR is probably the hardest game I've played in the last 10 years.

SM3DW one of the easiest so far. The only slight difficulty you'll have is aiming your jumps ONTO enemies and pipes and things (as without 3DS stereoscopic visuals, depth perception is a bit harder than in 2D games).

Why do people keep saying this? It was, is and will be used in all of them. On top of that every game benefits from Miiverse and 95% from off-tv play.

ive seen some of the later levels and damn they look hard. but yeah DKCR is really hard (NSLU might be up there.)

This is not a bad thing at all! It's good to have options. It was your choice to use pro/wii remote. The gamepad has a lot of uses, if you don't use it don't use those it doesn't mean they don't exist.

Nintendo's big titles have for the most part avoided using it

Mario 3d World uses it so much it gets on some people nerves (undeserved, as there some smart things done there). NSMBU uses it in co-op. Pikmin 3 uses it in a very cool way and it helps a lot to use the gamepad even when playing with the wii remotes. Nintendo Land and Game&Wario are practically built around the Gamepad. Wii Party U uses it quite a lot, with dedicated board games and 3 vs 1 multiplayer. Lego City Undercover is using it in very nice way that adds a lot of convenience and immersion to the game. W101 implementation is also very nice, but again it offers you the possibility not to, if you hate playing with the touch screen. W101 also brought on the table the possibility of switching between two screen, off scree and picture-in-picture on the big screen. So what are you talking about? Which Nintendo game avoids it?

I have something to ask for WiiU owners

Can somebody make a WiiU Web Browser OT?

I think there´s a lot to be discussed about the Web Browser, across the years

I mean, aside from being a very nice browser (the first useful console browser in history), there´s always updates, new ways to use it, and the on/off situation of the Youtube bug

I for one wish to talk about how i wish Youtube playlists were playable (and push this request forward, if more people want it)

Why cant i just make the OT? Simple: adding to my unsteady english skills, there´s the fact that i miss any technical knowlege on Web Browsers to start a discussion on the theme

Man, I've really been enjoying Wii Fit U and Zombi U so far!
Just got back from the Supermarket in Zombi U.

Boy howdy, it really is like Dark Souls for Zombie fans. I'm a huge fan of both and, man, it's right up my alley! The lighting, graphics, and sound are perfect. It's a shame it didn't sell well, as it sure deserved to. And we'll never get a sequel either :(

I sure loved seeing that "Killer Freaks from Outer Space
poster in the Tube, though. Nice call back!

Music to my ears. It's only £15 at the moment too so I'll pick it up!

I love my Wii U for games, but I would just like to put it out there that the WiiTV (or TVii) is absolutely crap and useless for me.

Has anyone gotten any use out of WiiTV?

I haven't. I maybe used it a handful of times when it came out and I couldn't figure out why it exists. I'll most likely never touch it again.

I don't understand why "party games" are always used dismissively when talking about making use of the system's features. Nintendo Land is an amazing showcase for the GamePad, so is Game & Wario. You see these games using the most novel concepts because they can be free in expressing their ideas with these titles and don't have to hang a whole 30 hour game onto them. ZombiU has you covered when talking GamePad in a traditionally styled game. The game wouldn't be anywhere close to being the same without it. It's also absolutely essential for Pikmin 3 since, as you mentioned, it is an crucial companion to the Wiimote&Nunchuk for optimal play/management experience.

But just like with the Wiimote, it's not always about completely building games around this one thing, it's just as important how it can be used to make traditional stuff better or add new layers on top of it. That's where NSMBU's boost blocks come into play. It created a whole other gameplay style in a genre and franchise that is 30 years old!

A select few of the third party developers have also managed to show off how the gamepad can make existing games even better with very simple additions that you just can't do on regular controllers (Deus Ex HR Director's Cut [drawing notes on the map, recording voice messages and sharing them online via the mic and tagging them to the map, gyro aiming], Mass Effect 3 multiplayer [push-to-talk feature], the CoD and LEGO games [two screen multiplayer], Assassin's Creed & Monster Hunter [HUD-free gaming without losing the information], NFS Most Wanted U [selecting cars quickly, world modification, creating local co-op where there wasn't one before].

The GamePad has been justified and shown off countless times already.

Wow, you hate America or something? ;) lol

You see the glowing red thing to the right? Communist! Get 'um!

A little bit off-topic question, but since I may in the future get a Wii-U - depends on what happens with Metroid to be quite frank - I was wondering if to do the transfer to get my downloads from my original Wii to the Wii-U will I need to de-homebrew my original Wii?

Just yesterday i cancelled my PS4 preorder and bought a WiiU instead. Zelda Bundle and Mario World. What a fine device, playing on the Gamepad without a TV is awesome!

No, the homebrew stuff simply doesn't transfer since the Wii doesn't know what it is.

Also, Nintendoland is worth $15 if you don't have it already, there are several asynchronous games, of which some are surprisingly lengthy.

asymmetric!

asynchronous = not at the same time
asymmetric = not the same thing (action)

Mario is easy and Donkey Kong is difficult, so if you are looking for easy then it is perfect. I died so many times in DKCR it was ridiculous x_x

Fixed. :)

I picked up the last Zelda Wii U bundle at Target last weekend. I haven't set it up yet, but I'm currently on the hunt for games. I'm kind of mad I didn't pick up ZombiU during BF. At the time I wasn't 100% sure I was getting a Wii U, though for $10 there really was no excuse.

well I'm not gonna make it, but I think it's a great idea. I feel like the web browser doesn't get the credit it deserves largely due to the fact that most console browsers suck so no one thinks about them anyway

but it is great. the screenshot feature, pulling videos up on the pad while the current video plays on the tv, holding L + R and using the gyro to scroll was a pretty genius move imo. really helps with long forum pages like these when you don't want to just keep swiping the hell out of your screen with the stylus

Awesome rant of truthiness!

I approve.

All Mario levels only ever have one mid-point checkpoint. DKCR is notorious for being hard. Mario games are often called too easy because many don't realize that the difficulty is the player's choice in that they can choose to go after star coins/green stars/stamps/secret exits (depending on the game) to achieve completion. The alternative and the reviewers-say-it's-easy solution is to just stumble to the end any way you can and call it a day after seeing the credits. You want Mario to be hard? Your choice. Want it to be easy? Your choice.

I love how easy it is to spot Germans on gaming forums :)

Hahaha thought the same thing :D

Are there any good Ego-Shooters or Beat 'em Ups (like Street Fighter) for the Wii U?

Oh man, I was wondering if other people notice these weird quirks too lol. Though I think the confusing usage of the Beat Em Up term is not exclusive to Germans, at least according to some unscientific research I did a while ago :P

:D

... no seriously. Jump'n'Run is a term (seemingly) exclusively used in Germany to describe what is called a platformer in the English speaking rest of the world (=internet). Maybe other European countries use the term too? I don't know.

Same thing with "Ego Shooter" - it uses two English words but English speakers don't use this term. Another example is the terribly stupid word "Handy" being used for cellphone. It's especially funny when Germans think this is the actual English word for the thing native speakers are just like "WTF?"

Because Nintendo sacrificed all their power in the console for what many consider a complete and utter waste of gaming resources.

Nintendo sacrificed all their power in the console to make it fit in the small box and consume as little as possible. Is in the Iwata asks.

Anyhow, there are enough threads about Wii U power and there are threads about the Gamepad. The Wii U it is what it is currently, a console with a great controller and able to run games that look and play like Mario 3d World. If that's enough you buy it for the right price. If not, it is not something that can be changed now without seriously dimish the experience for the people that enjoy it.

I haven't. I maybe used it a handful of times when it came out and I couldn't figure out why it exists. I'll most likely never touch it again.

What a total waste of resources.
I wish they would have scrapped the TVii and put in a DLNA media hub or something like that...

My fiance saw a commercial for Super Mario 3D World last night and mentioned she'd like to play it. I haven't gotten her anything for Christmas yet and cancelled my PS4 and XBone pre-orders as I mainly use my PC for gaming these days.

What is the best deal for a Wii U? Is the Mario bundle worth it? I haven't been following the console much, but I think it would be something she'd like. I've got the original Wii with the original Wii-motes (non motion plus) if that matters.

Something tells me that you're gonna be sooo happy that you did this for her, because of how much you will be loving Mario 3D World your fiance. ;p

You'll both have a blast!

I have also noticed a lot more advertisements on TV for Wii U and they are even sponsoring shows on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon Channel. The commercials highlight Super Mario 3d World, and they look cool.

GG Nintendo! keep it up!

Because Nintendo sacrificed all their power in the console for what many consider a complete and utter waste of gaming resources.

The only waste of resource I can find is in the TVii app. The gamepad is great and I love it. Its easy to think it sucks if you don't have experience with it, but once you do, you know how great it really is.

I'll tell you guys, I really regretted my Wii u purchase after a few weeks but I think it's because I wasn't clicking with the games I'd bought and maybe I was going through a phase where I didn't play much because now I'm really loving this little box.

It's laughably cliche at this point but gamers in the internet age tend to overanalyze and be hyper critical. I'm an older guy with kids and really sometimes you just need to chillax and just play some goddamn videogames.

Queue the whole "PLAY. THE. GAMES." meme.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I mostly game on my PC these days, but I just wanted to play some friggin Mario. I broke in my Wii U last night, and I'm really happy with it

So I'm really enjoying my Wii U so far (tried Wii Sports Club today - awesome!) but it's not exactly a Wifi powerhouse, is it? The signal in my house is traveling through a couple of walls and the Wii U is all like "Nope!". It's a pretty weak signal but it's working fine for the rest of my devices (even my Wii doesn't throw a fit).
