Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

I don't know if this has been addressed yet, but i think i know why the amount of storage needed for an e-shop game varies from info on the e-shop, to actual download, to storage taken up on the SSD/HDD. Maybe this is so obvious that i'll feel like a douche posting it after everybody says "du-uh", but i'll take my chances, so here's my take: the download file is some sort of archive, that needs to be unpacked before it can be installed. But that means it needs actual space to unpack. That's why the number in the e-shop is much larger than the actual installed game, which is also bigger than the actual download.

I'm pretty positive this is the reason, because when i was trying to fit as many demo's as possible on a basic Wii U SSD, i noticed the e-shop won't let you download unless you have as much space as is stated in the e-shop, even if you have enough space to fit the download and installed game. I knew this because i redownloaded a couple of demo's, so i knew how much space they took after installation. So, if you have just enough space to start a download of a game, you can actually start another download, if both files are small enough to fit on the SSD, but since Wii U reserves (or so it seems) the space for a game as soon as it is queued for download, it's very probable, that your first game will have no problem downloading, but it will give you errors installing (not enough space). How bigger the game, how bigger the extra unpacking space needs to be. So it's best to install the biggest games first, and the smallest games last. Because i changed my downloading order, i could fit an entire 500 MB demo extra on the internal SSD.

Seems like they're locking doom-and-gloom threads. This one is joyful.

Uhhhh i want to get a Wii U so bad but finances and already having too much of a back log are holding me back. But if either of the bundles drops to 250 again i might not be able to resist.

Well, I finished off Mario 3D World. Kinda need a break from games after Champion Road, but I'll probably dive into Wind Waker HD next. That game runs at 1080p, right? Curious to see how pretty it is IRL.

I won't be surprised if we see an ebay offer again before Christmas or early next year. Are there January Sales in the US? If so there might be one then.

You "know" about a Nintendoland 2? I don´t think anyone does. To answer your question: 3D World or NSMBU support up to 5 players as well. Get those.

Nintendo Land 2 shows up google searches, apparently some info leaked in Japan not too long ago. Either that, or the info was all made up.

I have Mario 3D World, not sure how it supports 5 players, don't have NSMBU but I've only seen that played with 4. What does the 5th player do?

Right now, I'm looking mainly for the kind of versus games that the Mario Chase, Ghost Mansion, and Sweet Day are since those went over really well with my overall group, and I'm already going to purchase the co-op games since I love co-op.

I'll definitely try the metroid and other single player games.

It probably should be locked, as the questions in the OP have long been answered, and megathreads that swallow several valid individual topics deserving of their own threads tend to do more harm than good.

But don't mind me.

5th player in NSMBU is for Boost Mode.
3D World is 4 players.

Quick questions:
I saw earlier that the disc drive is loud. I don't ever remember being bothered by this with any console, how bad is it exactly?

Does it run very hot? PS3 pushed out enough heat to noticeably warm the room up, it was sort of an inconvenience. Could leave the Wii on all day though.

How bad is the WiFi? Are we talking about issues across the house, or just a couple of rooms down?

...where can I find one of these good deals?

Yessir.

Dunno if its 60fps though.

It's 30 fps. ALBW is the only Zelda that runs at 60 I think.

I only have NSMBU, ZombiU and Nintendo Land phsyical, but the whole console is super silent. Probably the most silent console with a drive I've ever... not heard.

Doesn't get hot at all.

By Wi-fi you mean the Gamepad range? It's not all that good, but it really depends on a lot of outside factors, namely the materials you use in your house. For example I can use mine in the room next door, bathroom and part of the kitchen, but some people can't even get to the next room. It was done to provide a lag free experience, so range isn't where it shines.

The disc drive isn't exceptionally loud. Especially with the newer updates. I never notice it, really.

It runs extremely cool, even after hours of play.

WiFi works perfect for me, but I have a small place.

Target, Amazon and eBay seem to have had the best deals so keep an eye out.

It's too loud in my opinion, but you don't hear it while playing. ;)

Anyway, what I use to do is putting something soft beneath the Wii U (a shirt or something like that), half of the sound comes from the vibrations of the drive, which get enhanced by the the wooden surface under it. Then it isn't that loud, even if you don't play.

WiFi = no problems for me (routher & Wii U in the same room).

And the thing never runs hot.

The disk is loud by comparison to how quiet is the console for the rest of the time. You won't hear the disc over the running TV for example. But if the room is quiet you hear it.

It's not running hot at all. Anyhow, the console is so small that it should burn in flames to warm the room up.

I don't know for the WiFi as I have it in the same room as the router.

I think four swords adventures on gamecube ran at 60 fps.

I'm annoyed by some of the new lighting in WindWaker. I posted 2 screens of it in the screenshot thread. Dark spaces with torch light and during the famous "item fetch/open chest" poses, the lighting changes as well. This "breaks" the celshading look, and makes the 3D mesh much more apparent. I really don't like it, especially, because this was never a problem in the original version. See: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=91818688&postcount=3196

It's somewhat loud during initial acceleration, but not offputting. Wii U draws 32W, obviously, it's not going to heat your room. My router is one floor up and a room away. Don't have problems.

My wiiu drive is pretty quiet. The only disc i have is zombiu, i forgot it in the drive for weeks and only remembered to take it out after somebody on gaf pointed that discs keep spinning when you are doing other stuff in the system.

When it comes to Wifi, it gets the my connection with full strenght. And my router is in a room where the gamepad wont get the wiiu connection (such irony huhuhu)

The good thing about Wifi is that you can Always move your router closer to your objective

My wifi was a little slow/weird until I updated. Seems to be working fine now.

As for the disk drive, I haven't noticed it being abnormally loud or anything. For whatever reason mine has a hard time reading my Nintendoland disk, though. I thought I might need to get it fixed but every other disk works fine.

I don't understand why "party games" are always used dismissively when talking about making use of the system's features. Nintendo Land is an amazing showcase for the GamePad, so is Game & Wario. You see these games using the most novel concepts because they can be free in expressing their ideas with these titles and don't have to hang a whole 30 hour game onto them. ZombiU has you covered when talking GamePad in a traditionally styled game. The game wouldn't be anywhere close to being the same without it. It's also absolutely essential for Pikmin 3 since, as you mentioned, it is an crucial companion to the Wiimote&Nunchuk for optimal play/management experience.

But just like with the Wiimote, it's not always about completely building games around this one thing, it's just as important how it can be used to make traditional stuff better or add new layers on top of it. That's where NSMBU's boost blocks come into play. It created a whole other gameplay style in a genre and franchise that is 30 years old!

A select few of the third party developers have also managed to show off how the gamepad can make existing games even better with very simple additions that you just can't do on regular controllers (Deus Ex HR Director's Cut [drawing notes on the map, recording voice messages and sharing them online via the mic and tagging them to the map, gyro aiming], Mass Effect 3 multiplayer [push-to-talk feature], the CoD and LEGO games [two screen multiplayer], Assassin's Creed & Monster Hunter [HUD-free gaming without losing the information], NFS Most Wanted U [selecting cars quickly, world modification, creating local co-op where there wasn't one before].

The GamePad has been justified and shown off countless times already.

You see the glowing red thing to the right? Communist! Get 'um!

Excellent post. I love my Wii U gamepad and couldn't imagine having as much fun playing the console if I weren't using it. Off-TV play alone is worth it, but many times I want the interplay between the two screens, and games like ZombiU, W101, Zelda, etc all do that beautifully for me.

Holy shit your avatar. I havent seen that thing since my old Nintendo Power/EGM days.

my drive is whisper silent even while playing a game. wii u is vertical on the stands.

my wifi is fine even though the wii u is ~60feet from the router.

Your drive is silent while playing a game from disc? You must have the one magical Wii U.

As for the stands, I tried putting mine vertical like that, but the fans were louder that way so now it's horizontal again.

If you've got an extra $10 lying around or on the eshop you should pick up Earthbound. He's just one of the few awesome things about that game.

If there was legit gifting on the eshop I'd buy it for you myself!

WWHD is 1080p 30fps, and unfortunately it's not a constant 30 fps. I expect better from Nintendo when it comes to framerate. Kinda disappointed at the drops I've seen so far.

I have it vertical, with the vents up and it's quiet as a dead body.

I only hear the disc right as the system boots for a second and its quiet
the only thing i hear is the fan and that is only if i walk up about 2 feet to the wii u this is with all my other electronics off including tv the room is silent.

Really? Is Wii U supposed to be super silent with a disc in it? Because "GAF" told me otherwise before. That it always spins the disc even when you're in the menu which should be normal.

I'm gonna try turn it on now.

Btw, does Mario 3D need the GamePad or is it just as good an experience with the Pro controller?

It's not super silent with a disc being accessed. It used to always spin the disc if there was in there, regardless of whether or not you were using it. That got fixed in a firmware update. There are levels in Mario 3D that require the gamepad.

I have it vertically and I've never really noticed any sound before. Maybe it's just that I'm sitting several feet away from the console.

I'm talking about the fans. You said that they were louder when vertical. Maybe it was with the vents down?

As for the disc, I already stated earlier that is making some noise. I think that it is not spinning when I'm in the menu though. I have to double check that. Anyway I have most of the games digital (for the maximum convenience of the off-tv feature) so I don't care.

It wasn't incredibly loud vertical, but the fans were loud enough for me to hear them. Horizontally I hear nothing so I switched. Similar issue with my PS4 (louder vert, not as loud horiz). The disc does an initial spin up whenever you hit the main menu and eventually stops.

WiiU has great games , I just wish it could get a Fallout 4 or next Elder Scrolls game ; would be great to use the Pad as a Pipboy.

I know this probalby wont happen saddly... : ( .

WiiU needs more dark / mature games. Deus Ex Directors Cuts is a nice example....
