Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

People on the road playing with just the gamepad will be playing Wii U games, not Wii games like Xenoblade. You can output Wii games to the gamepad so it acts like a mini TV, no HDMI connection required (correct me if I'm wrong here, people) but you still need to use a Wii controller of some kind.

awesome.i get this already. thanks

My haul from yesterday. (Relax GAF, Mario 3D World was sold out in store and is being shipped to me next week). I also bought MonHun digitally alongside Earthbound, not pictured.

So far I was surprised how smoothly the update process took. Patching took less than an hour total, and the Wii->Wii U transfer was equally pretty fast...though downloading all my VC titles individually on Wii U was a tedious and irritating process with upwards of 50 games to re-download, at least two hours alone. Though you guys weren't kidding how embarrassing the VC offerings are on Wii U currently. Just a handful of NES and SNES games? WTF.

It's a precious little console with an ecosystem really tailored to a family environment. MiiVerse is humorous but I doubt I will give it much use. I am not at all sold on the Gamepad yet though. Off-TV play is needless for me given the atrocious battery life and image quality being far superior on my main TV. Most of the games don't require its use, and I got really annoyed having to get up during the Pikmin tutorial to swipe the screen on the charge cradle to scan the map for my objective despite using the WiiMote to play. (Hopefully I need not bother doing that again in the game).

Only Lego City requires the gamepad to play of all the purchases I have made. So put me in the anti-gamepad camp. I really wish they doubled-down on an improved Wiimote/Nunchuck combo and the Pro Controller instead of this second screen nonsense...

NSMB U has surprised me so far. I know lots of people compare it favorably to SMW, and I haven't played it deep enough yet to really consider it on that quality level, but I certainly am digging it more than the previous NSMB games.

Lego City is quite a step beyond prior Lego games, even the more recent Lego Marvel(which I just platinumed on PS4) feels like a stepdown over the immensity and quality of writing on display here. Very surprising.

70+ hours of MonHun played on 3DS, I am damn excited to finally give online a try in HD.

I threw in Pikmin 2 Wii to test out the WII emulation and to compare with Pikmin 3. Visually it's a massive step-up, looking forward to diving in more fully with the sequel...though I should play Pikmin 2 through fully first I guess. Never did play it much(outside of completing Pikmin 1 on GC).

Zombi U and Wonderful 101 are still in packaging.

Sonic Lost World demo really impressed me! Looks stunning and I loved exploring for red rings and secret paths in the demo level. Why is it so hated? Might pick it up after playing 3D World.

Thinking of trying out some eShop games. How are NanoAssault Neo and Mighty Switch Force Hyper/2? How is the Cave? I recall mediocre reviews, but the concept still intrigues me. Wii port good?

Oh, if you ever play the missions and want to have any chance for Platinum medal for some of them you will WANT to use the option of sending one captain via the gamepad. Even in the story, it helps saving time and getting the maximum out of a day. Everyone to his own, but I think this little detail improves a lot the game.

Both Nano Assault and Might Switch Force are amazing. Get them. The Cave is ok. It's a decent puzzle platformer.

Have you played it or are we discussing an youtube video?
The best version of the game runs at maximum 30fps, so of course if there are framedrops it goes below 30 fps, where should it go?
But the game is not unplayable. It drops frames in the cities when you fight or run from 6-7 guards. It doesn't have control problems because of that, as DF stated. And if the numbers don't lie, opinions built on numbers surely can be contradicted. As for example the fact that 2-4 fps less are much more disruptive than screen tearing (see Splinter Cell).
And again I just post my impression on the game. It does look great. I have screenshots to back up that.
I might have low standards as my hobby is to play games and not analyse them. If you are bothered by them feel free to ignore me.

Yes, I think that's for the best. I can't believe that people in this thread are actually doubting DF and selling a constant sub 30 as acceptable. It's all about the individual experience in a game that runs much worse than on 7 year old hardware.

I love my Wii U, but there is really no reason to be that delusional about most of its multiplatform showings.

Hated by reviewers. Every owner i see here on gaf loves the game.

I played the demo and find it beautiful, but makes me kinda dizzy. Same thing happened playing Galaxy Force 2 with the 3d on. Im getting old.

Zombi U and Wonderful 101 are still in packaging.

Most people here will say you´re still to experience the best part, then

It's hated because there are some really weird levels/gameplay mechanics in between with some cheap deaths. They fixed some of the issues the game had in the latest update though so it's much better than before. Still, this is one of the most polarizing Sonic games ever. Most people seem to agree that games like Sonic '06 and Shadow the Hedgehog are terrible, but there isn't really a consensus with this one. If you're a Sonic fan, you should try it for yourself. I liked it personally.

I did it guys! Bought a Wii u premium with Nintendo land for 269€, WiiFitU, nba 2k13 (12€), Rayman and... Wobderful 101! Haven't unboxed it. Will do once home.

Excited!

Weird. Those should normally have been moved during the transfer process.

Came home with Mario 3D and Zelda. Pretty excited about the deal at Best Buy for buy one get one select Nintendo title 1/2 off.

Mario is getting a lot of play from my roommate and girlfriend. Really gorgeous game and I'm really preferring the new pro controller over the tablet it feels perfect after getting used to the stick placement.

Oh, this was only a problem because all my VC games were stored on an SD card...maybe had I transferred as many as I could to the Wii internal memory they could have transferred without needing a re-download. Didn't think of that...

Can we do that Link to the Past Wii U transfer thing now? How does one do it?

You mean upgrade your Wii VC version? If you transferred it from your Wii, just go to the Wii U VC and it will be available to buy at the reduced upgrade price automatically.

Hm. I just saw a Walmart ad showcasing Disney Infinity on the Wii U. Specifically the Wii U because they started talking about being able to play it on the screen, and the kids said they asked for a Wii U.

Glad to see retailers getting the good word out.

This is interesting, because playing the demo it didn't feel deep at all.

Its got some shit man! as someone who loves Platinum I have played through bayo and revengeance on harder difficulties, went for S-ranks etc. Wonderful 101 plays so differently yet has tons of systems and FEELS like a badass action game when your in control, im getting completely destroyed by the game right now and repeating earlier missions for platinum rankings, its crazy good.

The GamePad is useful as a second screen if you want to get better scores. You use it to multitask, so you can draw a path to where you want one of your captains to go and control another one, so all of them are doing something constantly. It's the only way to get the best scores IMO, Wiimote + GamePad.

It's not about being delusional, it's asking for their methodology rather than blindly accepting their findings. If you played the game you would see that their findings don't seem right. There are several people on GAF that said the same thing about the game yet once DF ruled the performance as garbage their opinions were magically null and void.

If you want bad frame rate, look at Epic Mickey 2. AC4 is nowhere even close to that. It's just natural to question an "authority" than to just take their findings as gospel.

What do you think NintendoGAF? Have had my system in about 5 monthd. This are my physically games, I have The Wonderful 101, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi Olympic Games and Super Castlevania IV digital. Will buy Rayman Legends digital when Im done with 3D World. Only have finished ZombiU so far, and not touched the others.

Can I play single-player Super Mario World with a Wii U Pro Controller? I am about to pick one up to play it but the icons in game make it look like you can only use the gamepad unless you are playing multiplayer and not the first player.

The transfer makes the Wii U into "the same" Wii as the one you transfered from (the licenses are transferred), so the ones on the SD card should work on the Wii U after the transfer was completed without being an actual part of the transfer.

(I think)

Yes, you can play 1 player with any controller, but there are a few levels that require the gamepad. It will warn you when you get to those levels, but think that is usually/always on branching paths and not required to continue to progress in the game.

Question about the Mii plaza: so can you just not move your Mii around in the screen filled with icons/people? The only thing you can do is zoom in and out it seems. It's pretty weird, seems like a pointless screen. The Miiverse, with the different communities, that I really like.

I havent used it in awhile, but not sure if you can do this on the TV, but if you switch the miiverse to the gamepad, then you can scroll around the plaza, click on people to see their posts, and go to that post in miiverse as well as add them as friends, etc. You can also click on the icons to go to those conmunities.

Also as with most recent Mario games, the real challenge doesnt start until you "beat the game"

Yep. I hate the gamepad and do everything in my power to avoid using it. I've managed to play SM3DW without it 95 percent of the time. The 5 percent when I needed it was for gimmicky levels that were in no way enhanced by the use of the touchscreen or blowing/screaming into the microphone. I also needed it to post fart pics to Miiverse. That actually is the one useful thing I've found about the gamepad so far. I've also managed to play NSMBU, NLU, and Zelda WWHD 100 percent of the time with just the Pro controller. It's far and away my favorite of the 3 new next gen controllers.

Thanks for the info, 95% of the time is good enough for me. I don't mind the gamepad and actually really liked it for WWHD but it doesn't seem to add anything to Mario so I will snag the Pro controller.

Another upside of the Pro is that I've used it now for at least 20 hours and it's lost no ticks on the battery meter. 20 hours would have drained the life out of my dual shock 4 three times. It also has the best sticks of any new controller.

There was an update? When?
Was an overview posted anywhere?

EDIT: PSA, Gamestop has the Skylanders basic bundle for $275 new.

Hmm do you know if it works with PCs too? I am mainly a PC gamer and am damn tired of the awful 360 controller/dpad, it would be great if I could get dual use out of the Pro controller.

My NNID is Chacranajxy. My Mii will probably offend the thin-skinned among you.

yes it has a crazy 80 hr batt life. Maybe because iirc, it has no rumble or other bells and whistles. But a great form factor.

Something I just noticed:

If you go into the Youtube app and then start the Browser, eShop or Miiverse via Home-Button the Disc Drive won't spin like usually in those Apps, because you're still in the Youtube app or something like this. ;)

So silent.

I just got meself a pro controller and really like it. Mario plays much better with it - could totally see a SKU that comes with just the pro controller now. Too bad so little software actually supports it.

Meanwhile the Nintendo section at my local best buy is just a catastrophe. Neither 3D world nor Wind Waker HD in stock. Two lone copies of Pikmin 3 hidden around the corner. More WiiU branded Wii remotes on shelve than copies of games total easily.

3DS section is even worse though - zero recent releases available, saw maybe 6 copies of 3DS games total.
