Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

There wouldn't much to talk aside of LOOK AT HOW FUCKING BEAUTIFUL THIS GAME LOOKS.

Seriously, I can see why UNCMark finds it bland, but holy shit I think it's beautiful when I think that will be in a Xenoblade type of game.
Yeah, that's the biggest problem. Not enough info. Nintendo needs to hurry up and give us the scoop!
Anyone else still not getting the Xmas music in the E shop?
I've been getting it since Thanksgiving myself.

Alright, I think I'm going to go get a pro controller. Seems like it'd be ideal for stuff like Tropical Freeze.

Do ZombiU or Wonderful 101 support it, or would I have to switch back to the Gamepad with those?

ZombiU only supports the Pro Controller for multiplayer, obviously as the game is built around the GamePad and is called the definitive showpiece game for it for good reason ;)

The Wonderful 101 supports Pro Controllers and Classic Controllers. Anything that has two analog sticks.

I've been contemplating making a thread in Community about X, but I dunno if it would be a good idea.

Well, they killed our last one in here after the last necro bump. So having a dedicated thread would be nice but there's nothing new to discuss anyway, unless someone finds something new in the old footage.

Yes, but just know that your saves are only useable on the Wii U that they were created on.

oh. how about just the wii games ?

Holy macaroni, 29 bucks for Xenoblade!? Where was this?!
...And why does the sticker say Last Story?

oh. I bought xenoblade for 40. I just switched the cases because the case that it came it had a broken clip inside for the manual.

Now all that isual needs is a Nunchuk so that he can play the games that aren't compatible with WiimotePlus alone or Classic Controller Pro.

Some of the best Wii games require a Wiimote & Nunchuk, like Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Skyward Sword.

It does start getting confusing when you bring the Wii U Pro Controller into the mix, since it is not compatible with ANY Wii games, while the Wii's Classic Controller Pro (the one that hooks into the Wiimote) is compatible with SOME Wii U games (e.g. Mario 3D World).

You can make it easier by saying: the new controllers are not backwards compatible but the old controllers are forwards compatible (when supported). It really isn't that confusing unless you list everything separately.

Hope it lives up to the hype, u guys.

Or heads gonna explode, right? =P

I find the Wii U Pro Controller the best one so far, I use it whenever a game does not really need the gamepad.

Contemplating buying one this holiday. Depending on how things go this week, I probably will.

Do it!

I got a Wii U about 10 days ago and after playing Super Mario 3D World a lot since then (and some NSMBU here and there which is also great btw) the purchase was already worth it just for 3D World alone, it's such an amazing game.

Can't wait to check out TW101, Zombi U, Pikmin 3 & replay the glorious Wind Waker in Full HD...but first I'll 100% Super Mario 3D World. :P

Question: When transferring Wii VC games to WiiU how do playing SNES and N64 games work (of which I have a lot). I used a Gamecube controlled to play them on the Wii, which I can't on WiiU. Am I better off not transferring?

You have to use a Wii Classic Controller or Wii Classic Controller Pro to play them. You can also use a GCN controller by buying a third party adapter that plugs a GCN controller into the Wii Remote.

At least for some of the SNES games the actual Classic Controller is superior to the GCN pad in my experience. I found Contra nearly unplayable with the GCN because of how the buttons were mapped.

Who are those people? Should their impressions be trusted more than DF's years of experience in the field? I don't have any reason to doubt DF's findings, and I am not sure what the Trine 2 example you mentioned is about. Was an actual frame rate test done that turned out to be incorrect? If not, it's irrelevant.

Also DF attested Mario 3d World a perfect 60fps in the game areas they analyzed. Why would their setup work here, but not in other games?

You can doubt DF's editorials and even their capture methods (See BF4 comparison), but I don't think there is any solid proof to say they are messing up their Wii U framerate tests.

The thing for me is that I'm working on a game now and under certain conditions I can get the framerate down to the teens. I've play hours of both my game and Black Flag and at no time did it feel like the same experience. But that's sometimes a subjective thing, but to say that they had control issues from playing the game is beyond ridiculous. After I read that, I just decided that these guys have a problem and that it wasn't worth bothering to read anything else they had to say. Having actually played the game, their experience didn't match up to mine and either they just suck at playing games and wanted to drag the system through the mud, or they have some kind of agenda they're trying to push. Either way, it's not something I really have any desire to read about or support.

Or heads gonna explode, right? =P

ya

Anyway, I opened up the box, took the controller out, held it, and immediately felt at peace. This shit is ridiculously comfortable. I'll probably have a chance to actually use it in a couple days, when I give New Super Luigi U a shot.

Ha!

I just got one a week back finally after passing on it for a year. Just felt like time and I really wanted the white one. Tight-ass controller. Feels great.

Yep, they smartly copied the shape of the 360 controller. It feels perfect.

If these games are already out on WiiU VC, you can buy that version for a fraction of the cost (1 or 1.5 bucks for NES or SNES games) if the Wii games are transferred to your Wii U, and actually play them "with" the gamepad. Games from Wii VC, you can play "on" the gamepad (meaning, you can use the gamepad as a screen, but you'll still need the actual Wii controller to control the game)

ok. so i went to the gamestop in downtown SF. picked these guys up.

right ones right ?

Right choices. You even picked the Luigi (a.k.a. better) Wiimote.

Protip: In the back of every Wii and WIi U game there are small icons denoting which controllers can be used to play that game. The Wii Classic Pro is compatible with MH3U.

Seriously? It feels cheap, it has notched analogs, digital triggers, awful ergonomics, requires a wiimote to work, and the analog stick placement copies the horrendous placement of the Dual Shock. Pretty much everything that's wrong with it except for the triggers is fixed on the Wii U Pro.

hmm i dont know. it actually feels pretty good for its cost and while it requires a wiimote to work thats the concept of the classic con in the first place (being a peripheral to the wiimote).

button placement etc. are up for debate (keep in mind classic controller is primarily used for virtual console games) but ergonomics.. i dont know.. never had any problems

on the upside it is compatible to wii titles.

It's even better than the 360 pad IMO. not just because of the d-pad or things like that, but I actually find it more comfortable to hold.

I was speaking only of the shape. It's a complete copy of the 360 controller in that regard, but you're right that the Wii U Pro is more comfortable, and I think that has a lot to do with the weight difference (Pro is much lighter) and the lack of a battery pack. My favorite aspect of the Pro are the sticks. They're so damn good. I wish I could take them and put them on the dual shock 4. World of difference in quality there.

I have the wired one so no battery pack there, but when you turn it around, the places behind triggers are not completely levelled with the rest of the surface (I have no idea if I'm making any sense here, it's 3:20 in the morning), unlike the Wii U Pro which also feels bigger for some reason. When I compare them directly the Pro is maybe a tiny bit bigger but definitely not as much as it feels.

And you are right, the sticks are godlike. Didn't like them at first because they were so damn sensitive but got used to them and love them now.

I have a question!

in trying to set up my new Wii U, I attempted to copy my 3DS Mii to the Wii U. I get the message "Unable to send this Mii" on the 3DS and "This Mii could not be received" on the Wii U. The Mii has sharing and copying turned on. Any reason why I can't transfer?

Same thing happened to me, just go into the edit settings of your Mii on 3DS and click the checkbox allowing you to copy that Mii. I think it defaults to off. After that reattempt the transfer to Wii U and it will be all good.

Comparing the two directly it's noticeable that the handles on the 360 controller are wider and more bulbous than the Pro. This gives the pro an advantage. I love the 360 controller, but Nintendo made it better except for the triggers. It's a shame that the console that has the best stick placement for shooters and twin-stick shooters has the fewest number of them.

I really want a new Earthbound in the same graphical style as The Wonderful 101.
This is where JRPGs have been screwing up. They think we're playing them for the graphics (they aren't even on top there anymore anyway) and the exploration, adventure, and openness is completely lost as a result. What you're left with is something like a COD corridor if it was about anime and instead of competitively shooting people you're pressing buttons every 15 seconds on a d-pad. I'd love something like FFIX with WWHD graphics.

edit:
Oh yeah, went into GameStop looking for Xenoblade today and asked if they had a new copy (since the used ones are marked above retail) and he straight up told me that they're all new and all of those copies were just opened up stuck with a used game sticker. I remember seeing something about this, but was it ever confirmed?

So I opened my WInd Waker HD game. Took out the code for Nintendo Club to register it. And the system tell me it has already been redeem.

Anyone had this happen to you? What can I do to correct this?

Ask the store why they're selling used games as new.

Is the Wii U still picky with what controllers work with which game?

I remember watching a GB quicklook of NSMBU and it wasn't possible to play the game in MP with one player using the gamepad as a controller. Everyone had to use wiimotes or classic controllers.

I'm thinking about getting a WiiU but weird issues like these are currently holding me back. And I am usually an informed "core gamer."

NSMBU had Wii U Pro controller support added to it.

Last I checked, only Pro Controllers worked instead of Wii Remotes; they are not interchangeable with Classic Controllers. Checking the back of the box helps a bit to know what works and what doesn't, and assume that single player always supports just the gamepad, and multiplayer usually doesn't, just to stay on the safe side.

So it's usually not possible to use the gamepad in MP? That sucks. It totally should give me the option.

Well, sometimes you can, sometimes you can't, but assume you can't to be on the safe side when it comes to games that don't feature asymmetrical gameplay. I left that part out accidentally. It's not a hard rule, but just a good thing to assume.

Think about it this way: Similar controllers for all to be on the same playing field. Do you want Billy screaming "Susan got the tablet controller, I want to use it!"? Some devs have thought the same.

Some go against this. Mario And Sonic At Sochi is an example of this, as one of the people must always use the Gamepad in some games, even 2 player hockey, and the person using the gamepad has an unfair advantage that player 2 can never attain; it's not fair.

Wow. Transferring your Wii data to your Wii U is the most unnecessarily complicated, stupidest process of all time.

That's why I didn't do it. After I read about how it was supposed to be done, I figured it was better to keep my Wii and Wii U hooked up and switch if needed.

It really is for the best. I've found through testing that the upscale ringing on Wii U is worse than the upscale done by many TVs, and with the addition of homebrew to play games from different regions and such, as well as using GCN controllers, why would you ever want to transfer?

So I can play any Wii games on my Wii U right? Is it region free?

Many people recommend the Pro controller for some of the Wii U games... What are you supposed to do during the parts where you're supposed to utilize the controller, like blowing and touching the screen?

How many games on the Wii U requires the Wii controller and nunchuck? Or did Nintendo completely drop that for this gen, and I should only be getting the controller bundle if I'm interested in playing Wii games?

Is the Wii U Monster Hunter game identical to the Wii MH game, but with HD graphics?

Thanks guys.

1: Not region free. All Wii games work.
2: If the GamePad is required then that is the only way to play the game.
3: A random amount of Wii U games may require the Wiimote/nunchuck - Wii Sports, for example. There aren't a ton that use the Wiimote as a primary controller, but there are a few.

You can play any Wii game, yes. I can't help you with the region lock question, sorry.

For the parts of games that require the gamepad, you simply either skip them or whip out the gamepad. In a game like SM3DW it's needlessly stupid. The things it requires you to do with the gamepad quite literally add nothing to the game. It appears to be there just to check a box. Wiimote+Nunchuk is very much supported on Wii U, some might say to a fault. It's supported in more games than the far superior Wii U Pro controller.

1. No, is not region free

2. Generally the game will tell you that you need to use the pad for those stages (Mario 3d World).

3. Some games support them but I cant think of one that only plays with the mote +nunchuck.

4. Sort of. MH3U is an expansion of the Wii game. It has more monsters and more quests but yeah, the game is the same till you get to the point of the new quests/mosnters

No. You can only play Wii and Wii U games of your region on Wii U.

Yes, because it's ergonomic as hell and awesome, with a kick-ass battery life.
What are you supposed to do during the parts where you're supposed to utilize the controller, like blowing and touching the screen?
If the game requires touching and blowing on the Gamepad, you still have to do it on the gamepad. An example of this would be navigating the map in Wind Waker while playing with your Pro Controller without pausing.

Definitely invest in a Nunchuck combo for Pikmin 3 and Mario Kart 8 alone. Pikmin 3 is so much better with one, and some of the Nintendoland events require it. When in doubt, read the back of the box. It has not been dropped, not in the least.

Holy multiple responses batman! Thanks a lot guys.

Well, the obvious reason is because the Wii has atrocious video output, but yeah, the process is convoluted enough that I dunno if I wanna bother. And you're correct about those upscaling issues.
