Couple of years ago I would've said that while j-pop's got the better solo artists, k-pop's the place for interesting idol groups. Now things have changed to the point where I feel I can present these

reasons j-pop groups are better than k-pop groups right now:

Sophisticated sexy http://youtu.be/eH1qA0LwI7I
Heavy funk http://youtu.be/Vhbq65WcH3o
Heavenly vaporwawe http://youtu.be/e089x6ba1Zo
Classic Tsunku http://youtu.be/wCPZTjqvN0Q
The powerful dancing http://youtu.be/M_4nGY9at9M
The awesome collabs http://youtu.be/NDEl77WMY8Q , http://youtu.be/IhlXlaHH3D4
The hyperactive http://youtu.be/NypVvG9fQ7o & even more hyperactive http://youtu.be/wB5AGKFuRtY
The provocateurs http://youtu.be/sKnFnhoXiCU
The hip hop http://youtu.be/Z7ukmG_1FSg
The giant spectacles http://youtu.be/Yg-05mVVHFA
The really weird http://youtu.be/3DXGSXxLj4w
The global stars http://youtu.be/CBh3k6qxeJE

That's without listing the less idol-y likes of Perfume, FEMM, etc

(To be fair k-pop's won back ground in interesting solo artists)

reason why kpop is better than jpop

dScSDFg.jpg

On a serious note though, I used to be into j-pop and j-rock before around early 2003-2007, back when I was in middle school till 10th grade. Ayumi Hamasaki, Ai Otsuka, Morning Musume, M-flo, Thelma Aoyama, Arashi, KAT-TUN, The GazettE, Dir en grey, and all that jazz. I really adopted a heavy, irrational hatred towards the korean entertainment industry on my first particular encounter with it, that would be DBSK. I saw them perform a few songs and immediately called them out for being Johnny wannabes. In fact I kind of made it my job to go and troll Korean artists after that for trying to be Japanese.

I ended up on snsd's into the new world video and I fell absolutely in love with k-poop then, and since then moved away from j-pop, which I can't go back to no matter how many chances I give it. The only thing I can listen to from Japan lately has been Dir en grey, and some old mflo.

Music is clearly better right now as proven above.

I don't even like K-poop that much anymore, but still much prefer it over J-pop.

I gave them all a listen, still no from me. E-girls is decent though. Only thing I prefer is J-rock over the nearly non-existent K-rock, and not because Babymetal, because why listen to that crap when you have godly Dir en grey.

One of the best things to come from japan tho Soulja - Koko Ni Iru Yo. A lot of people liked Themla Aoyama's version more but I like this one much much more.

About 6 songs in and only the first one has any merit too it.

My body was not ready again.

Then you better not watch the seohyun cuts. Cause she dominated.

If Bepop are getting a push via features when can we expect a major debut with some genuine pop rock songs.
+1

They performed on stage with Wax at Music Core today.

Edit: I now see Loci already pointed out that they performed on Show Champion yesterday.

----

Edit 2 : Watching the Happy Together episode that was subbed last week that has Yura appearing on it, and I am enjoying Choi Yeojin's attitude. Got some of Gyuri's goddess complex going on. Looking forward to her in this week's Running Man now.

Finished it.

Apart from the first one (which is really really good actually, and if you like that, you'll probably like TokiMONSTA ), and a few that were ok. Most seemed relatively mediocre. All comes back to personal taste.

Really, you should have just linked the FEMM play list :p

I've heard a few of these already, but I went through them all anyway. As a former(ish) jpop fan, I can hear the stereotypical "jpop sound" in most of these songs. It's a matter of taste whether you enjoy that or not.

My story is similar to yours, although I got into jpop back in 1999/2000 when I heard Utada Hikaru for the first time. I shunned KPop until SNSD showed up and became a full time fan during the Korean girl group explosion of 2009.

I'm pretty excited about FEMM because they sound so different than standard jpop. Hopefully they can start a new trend. Other jpop artists I can listen to these days: Perfume, Especia, TANAKA ALICE, lecca, and most stuff produced by Jeff Miyahara. He produced Japanese tracks for SNSD, BoA, 4minute & Kara along with stuff for jpop artists like Weather Girls and JASMINE.

Really? Which songs can you hear that in? Possibly in the vocal stylings of MM14, but what else? Because I'd say that is a remarkably varied selection of musical genre inspirations, styles.

Hidden Singer this week had Taeyeon singing with Tiffany, Seohyun, Yuri, Hyoyeon, and Red Velvet in the crowd (Wendy faces are the best. Get this girl a permanent spot on a variety show)

To me, Flower, Tokyo Girls' Style, Morning Musume, and Momoiro Clover Z have the usual jpop sound. While the instrumentation & arrangement might be slightly different than the norm, particularly in the case of TGS and MoMusu, the melodies scream jpop to me.

I'll boil down the genres into these wholly-stereotypical descriptions:

JPop: cheerful, cute, energetic, melancholy, dreamlike
KPop: skillful, powerful, cool, slick, boastful, smug

(these can be proven wrong with examples on both sides, but that's just my general take)

Well the way you posited it was as if people either like 'that sound' or they don't, in which case none of those songs have anything to offer. But regardless of whether you hear any similarities in melody, and yes, many Japanese pop songs use different standard chord progression from western pop, we go there from New Jack Swing and Funk through glitch pop and traditional Japanese music -- with the variation in tone, genre, style, it's hardly fair to say they adhere to any sort of stereotypical sound.

What videos should I watch for some great Seohyun action? I haven't seen a single performance.

Adrenaline on Mnet.
Despite all the extremely cringe-worthy and awkward non-existing-ass shaking I really enjoyed that one. Or maybe that's the reason it was fun.

Ever wondered what former idols Viki (Dal Shabet), Kim Bomi (M.I.L.K), and Cho Minah (Jewelry) have been up to lately (no?). They're in the movie 'A Pharisee', an erotic movie which says on its poster, "A hot topic production with first exposure [nudity] of former girl group members!".

MCountdown's own multicam is the best video. Her part at the 1 minute mark is so good.

I love the choreo for Adrenaline. It was done by Kyle Hanagami (remember that time those 3 APink members did that Yoncé dance cover? That was his choreography, except they used it without permission lol). I'm kind of mad that SNSD get stuck with the AWFUL Jillian Meyers while these 3 get choreo this good.

STT. Nice. lol.

How goes the laptop?

That's what I'm going to call them from now on lol. It's back! I only got it recently but it's actually working a lot better than it used to which is nice. I haven't been on the irc channel much because I've been stuck in the FF14 grind but I'll make a point of showing my face a bit more soon!

This is a bit weird. ZE:A’s leader Lee Hoo talks about hardships, calls out Star Empire’s CEO on Twitter. We all know how shady the Star Empire situation is with Nine Muses (the documentary says enough) but this could be huge. Worth keeping an eye on.

Their leader seems to be traumatized (definitely more than frustrated) and has finally snapped.

He's talking about releasing documents on his own agency and even other agencies if they try to fight him. I hope he has friends who will release on his behalf if he is compromised.
