Kadokawa confirms Sony sent an acquisition letter

I have only one question about this.

What I expect;

Future Elden Ring, Sekiro and Armoured Core entries will remain Day 1 multi-plat. There's no way that can change especially with Elden Ring.

New IP will have some sort of exclusivity on PlayStation & PC.

That's because you don't realize that Sony is willing to have reduced software sales on PC for stronger hardware sales for PlayStation.

This will suck for Anime/Manga fans if it goes through.

No it won't. My fave modern anime ATM isn't even made by Kadokawa, but Madhouse.

You guys act like Sony'll force them to make all their anime Concord episodes or something. It's needless pessimism.

They will ruin From Software. Sorry for the doom and gloom but it will happen.

Did you start gaming this year or something?

This is my assessment too, they would be better off buying Square Enix, From is too rare of a jewel and Sony doesn’t have what it takes to recreate their games.

Deal hasn't even been officially announced yet and already so many meltdowns.

Can you elaborate on this, please?

I keep reading it but I am not sure what the concerns are?

Just the typical "monopoly = bad" rhetoric without even understanding there can be legal & illegal monopolies, or that how most legal monopolies are because the market chose one offering well over others in a fair competitive market place.

Or even understanding what a monopoly is. Sony buying Kadokawa won't make them a monopoly in anime and manga, not when some of the biggest studios & distributors are owned by other companies. Also Kadokawa doesn't generate even 33% of total anime & manga revenue in Japan or globally; Sony buying them wouldn't increase it to that amount and technically a monopoly requires 51% or more of total market share.

So basically, it's fearmongering.

Exactly. People are for a rude awakening. Sony buying From Software actuall means the Californian woke are buying it. Mass layoffs incoming that will be replaced by a more inclusive people to reach newer audiences.

.....

what-meme.gif

Sony Corp = Japan headquarters

SIE = California headquarters

Sony Corp are the ones offering to buy Kadokawa. The ones whose headquarters are in Japan.

No one is offering to buy From Software; Sony Corp are offering to buy Kadokawa, the parent company of From Software.

Even if From Software are managed under SIE in some way (like for publishing), I don't see how "woke California politics" have affected GT7 or Astrobot...

...you know, two SIE games from Japanese studios?

🤦‍♂️...

Lol, we started already. Just straight up say that they're going to employ blue hairs or something, it's not like opinions like that can be taken seriously at all.

Some of these posts are making me think I'm on ResetERA, and I've only read the first page!!

Sony sent an offer letter. If Kadokawa doesn't want to be bought, they can just say no thanks.

For everyone complaining about this, what other company would you like to see buy Kadokawa if they're trying to sell? Microsoft? EA? Ubisoft? Who do you think would be less likely to ruin From Software than Sony?
There's also something else: Ubisoft, MS and EA don't care about acquiring Kadokawa because they only care about FromSoftware while Sony is one of the few companies WW where they have business in every single thing Kadokawa also has. That's why it's a "perfect match" for an acquisition (at least from a business point of view).

That's because you don't realize that Sony is willing to have reduced software sales on PC for stronger hardware sales for PlayStation.

They don't have to do that with every IP. They have Bloodborne and new IP to drive hardware.

I imagine Elden Ring 2 is in developent even though we just got SOTE. Not everyone likes returning to games for DLC & expansions but they do for sequels. Base game sold 25M+, there's no way it's not happening and I'm sure even Sony would be happy to keep that as the exception.

That's just hopium. That's not in line with Sony's MO at all.

Is Sony a game deveopment studio? No.

Sony or SIE in this case funds and publishes games. Stellar Blade is fully funded and published by Sony, just like they funded and published Spider-Man 2, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Resistance, Infamous, etc.

Honest question: Do you have some evidence to back up this statement? Following the history of this game's development, they were working on the game well before Sony stepped in. What makes you think Sony went back and funded the development work that was done before they became the publisher?

This could drag on for a very long time, and again there is too much focus on From Software. Understand that Sony is interested in all of Kadokawa. This gives them huge control over Anime + Manga distribution, the studios that deal with Anime + Manga, plus of course the gaming divisions that Kadokawa owns.

If this deal closes in Sony's favor, they will practically become a monopoly on the Anime + Manga market. Well, as has already been noted many times, Sony is not the only one who is interested in this. Tencent is also very interested in Kadokawa, for absolutely the same reasons. This is a very good company, with a very good set of studios, the acquisition of which guarantees a very strong effect on the Anime, Manga and game market.

Yea but Kadokawa is a Japanese company if they are genuinely looking to sell they are going to sell to Sony.

I really don't get why people suddenly think all of a sudden Sony is going to stop doing what they've been doing and that's locking games down to their platform and then PC later. The logic about software sales could be applied to all of their top titles and yet nothing has stopped them from locking those down also.

The market isn't making any decisions here, Sony just came up to one of the biggest names in gaming/Anime and said "can we buy you?"

And if you're gonna say "well they wanted to sell anyways" bethesda also wanted to sell and look at the deep shit they're in now....

Well, potentially. It really all depends on the agreement to be quite honest.

It could likely "be no different", but I still think one of the things that makes From so special is how they represented themselves. Especially when their success relies on their own success as a whole, no one else.
I honestly don't think anything would change other than it having a Playstation Studios logo at the beginning. I can't see Sony interfering at all and I don't think they'd even use a different engine (unless their current engine becomes unfit for purpose like what is happening with 343). They would have more support if needed, potentially much more matketing and they would get hardware earlier than if they are third party, but other than that I think Sony would mostly leave them to it.

From Software going out with Elden Ring as the last good game.

Any future FS games I will not be pre ordering until I see reviews.

Ummm.... have you seen how Sony runs things?

Look into Bungie/Concord.

The level of ignorance is astounding...

Bungie's problems were due to Pete Parsons and their BOD screwing employees over for years and screwing up the money, buying a bunch of fancy cars and all that shit. Bungie employees wanted SIE to assume control and push out Parson & the BOD. So the problems with Destiny DLC, Marathon dev, the firings...that's down to Parsons & his BOD.

Concord is the only thing that can be pinned on SIE; they inherited an unappealing game but it was Hulst who bet big on it. Even if there were people in SIE who didn't want the studio or the game, they were probably ignored. But Concord's failure has been so monumental, it'll be Hulst's humbling moment. Totoki & Yoshida aren't going to let them interfere with From Software if he's already let Polyphony Digital & Team Asobi do their thing, and I strongly doubt Hulst wants to have another Concord on his watch.

Which is why they're probably making changes to Fairgame$ and skimming back on some of the other GAAS; they know the wild gambit wasn't a great bet.

But none of that chances the fact, that Kadokawa are in the market to sell. They want someone to buy them so, if you're so against it being Sony, what company would've been your choice and why?

Imagine that the great cultural legacy that is Japan is in the hands of a stupid man like Hermen Hulst.

Polyphony Digital seem to be doing great.

Team Asobi just released one of the (maybe the?) highest-rated games of the year. Seem to be doing great.

Doesn't seem like Hulst is screwing either of those up, and they're both Japanese studios. So why would it suddenly be different with From Software?

Oh, it wouldn't be. You guys are just fearmongering with FUD. Typical.

Nintendo should buy them......

I kid.

I think Sony is the best option.

God of War 2, Ghost of Tsushima 2, Horizon, Spider man 2, TLOU 2 all the stories look like they had been through the Disney PR department. I also find it curious that you think Death Stranding wasn’t preachy.
Please, tell me more about Ghost of Tsushima 2

(I'm being serious, if you have more details about the story I'd like to hear it, all I have to go on is a trailer and some dev snippets)

Even if they did acquire them, I doubt they’d stop releasing the games on other platforms. It’s almost a non-story really.

Ghost of Yotei would sell VERY well on PC day 1... Sony could not get a single fuck.

How does an acquisition thread turn into a transgender studies masterclass?
👀

Folks, please dial back the culture war drive by bait. It's getting tiring seeing this in almost every single thread on here.

Here's this thread for the pros and cons to your heart's content:

Actually, that is a worry, what if some big TV/media production company swoops in to buys them with an offer they can't refuse and decides they don't want any game studios so closes them down?

Thanks, though I'm honestly more worried about the console war.

I almost want to see this happen just for the PC and Xbox bro tears. Resetera must be having a meltdown of biblical proportions right now.
Oh,they really are, if it wasn't so sad it would be funny... Hah, who am I kidding, it's hilarious, and this is all before any confirmation of it actually happening (I know the bids are going in and there is certainly an interest)

I'm a bit confused as to why people seem to think this is somehow going to ruin FromSoftware, when almost every first party game Sony roll out is great
Not to mention Bloodborne and DeS. If Kadokawa wants to sell there is no better owner than Sony if you want From to continue as they are. Who else can better integrate From into their business?

Career moments for everyone!
Phil is writing the email right now!

This purchase from sony not from SIE. Sonys japanese studios remain unaffected from the creative influence of california.
But it's Sony not Playstation looking to buy them, right?

Yeah, SIE wouldn't purchase a multimedia company. Sony wouldn't buy a company and tell SIE "you can't touch them". They will buy them and assign responsibility of the various departments wherever they make sense. Games will go to SIE, manga/anime to aniplex, film to Sony Pictures, etc.

Maybe they can assure us by shutting down California branch and move back to Japan. Don't want the woke mind virus infect the manga/anime.
If that's what you believe you should read/watch things outside of mainstream Shonen. Your mind would apparently melt lol.

I also see people using Stellar Blade, but Stellar Blade isn't from Sony. It was a fruition out of a response of people criticizing their garbage States of Play(hence why they quickly made one about Stellar Blade and Rise of Ronin, with Ryan stating about east games or something like it).
That's not how game development works at all...
You guys need to understand that Sony isn't Insomniac either. They're a publisher first and foremost, why would they ""push DEI"", if they supposedly do, only through their internal studios?
You're gonna get an Astro Bot remaster next year and you'll like it.
Heck yeah.

I wish gaming were niche again, normies dont deserve to play an artform they actively will allow to be ruined.
Cool, the "gaming used to be niche because girls in my class didn't have a SNES" crowd is now here.

Then Sony brings the From Team in-house, or gives them funding to start up replacement studio in exchange for some exclusives. They basically did this with Kojima.

I don't agree with the whole "Playstation will make all of their games woke!!!" thing, mostly because not every one of their studios are like that. It's also just more culture war BS from the same fucking people that we've had to deal with ever since the Sweet Baby saga.

They'd improve the technical aspects of the game for sure, visuals are to be decided. But then that's just more IP that Sony owns. PC versions of these games are now at the mercy of Playstation, my main reason for opposing this. And any potential of creative control being stripped from them sounds like a nightmare.

We've already seen an entire portion of the gaming industry reduced to garbo under MS ownership (and how I used to defend and stand up for that until i got the rude awakening of Tango Gameworks getting temporarily shut down). You see the fucking food industry and how many companies, brands and IP are just owned by like 3-4 corpos. Why bring that here?

Yeah, sure. It's an "almost". "Just for the tears" and the giggles.
It's not like you are going to be a rabid fanboy frothing at your mouth for a chance of getting some ammunition in your next list war or anything.

Who the fuck do you people think you are fooling, exactly?

Sure, that can happen but From is huge compared to what KojiPro was, do you think all 400 ish employees would move/be taken on by Sony? Doubtful

They want to sell, I'd rather Sony get them than pretty much anyone else just because Sony is pretty much already involved in all the markets Kadokawa is in
