Kendrick Lamar's verse

Not surprised by the lack of quality in these responses. They rushed so they can go first before anyone else and they basically missed the point. I'll wait for quality singles and albums to hit.

yup that's the point of the verse, and people have missed it. It's not about some quick response so you can trend for 5 minutes on twitter. Kendrick challenged dudes to make good music, consistently.

Lupe has a couple of lines but demanding that Kendrick should respect him in a nasally voice kills any momentum he had on that song. He sounds frustrated throughout the entire track.

Cmon mann. And kendrick changing tones to sound hard on that Control song is any different?

The way Lupe says - "He's so crazy, look at the little baby/N*gga you ain't Nas, n*gga you ain't Jay Z" - that's all that needed to be said. People are soo starved to see some rap beef that we anoint that very "sweet" Kendrick verse on Control. Shit was sweet mann. He is not built for that kind of rap. He should know his lane. I say that with the upmost respect.

Like I said, Lupe had some nice lines in his track but he sounds like he took things a little personal and you can hear it in his voice. Kendrick sounds aggressive at all times on his verse, Lupe started off good but as the track went in he started to sound upset. And for every hot line there was one that didn't elicit anything from me. I think Lu would have been better off putting out a Fire part 2 than this track.

Kendrick sounds great on aggressive, battle style tracks. He ripped Backseat Freestyle, Rigamortus, Catch a Fade, etc etc.

his agressive style sounds really rough in that new verse, he sounds like when someone tries to imitate DMX's voice

he sounds exactly like he did in Jig Is Up, released months ago.

I meant compared to something like backseat freestyle

haven't heard Jig Is Up, is it good? I'm so not into singles, I always miss them

EDIT : damn his voice is so different than on GKMC, or maybe the production is different

He is not built for that kind of Hip Hop. Neither is Kanye, Drake, etc. No shame in that. It's ok to be Andre 3000, Mos Def, Q-Tip. The Kendrick verse on Control was aight. Nothing crazy now. Some name drops and the misguided attempt at saying he is king of NY. Fun for the industry to get people talking, but please don't act like Kendrick can handle that weight. He can't handle a Jadakiss or a Fabolous. It's not his style. He does not have anger and envy in his heart. He's a backpack rapper. I like Kendrick's music a lot, but I thought it was "cute" that he claimed NY. Quite blasphemous.

The fact his new verse got a 20 page thread on neogaf and pretty much every hip hop forum and it lit twitter up proves kendrick is the most relevant man in the game.

Yup. The verse wasn't challenging people to post diss tracks, just for everyone in the game to step up their game in general because some of them are getting flabby, bringing that competitive edge back. Throwing this killer verse out there as a general standard.

Well Fab said he's coming for K.dot so lets see. lol doesn't have anger and envy, coming like a psychologist.

I can feel the anger/passion in this song

Yes. His success is much deserved. This is good for Hip Hop. My problem is with the NY claim.

I'll give you Jada but Fab just as boring on a track as Cassidy is. Kendrick is a built as he needs to be for that style of hip hop especially since you're pointing out a bunch of punchline rappers who lack the ability to switch it up (exception to Jada of course). Punchlines aren't the only way to be aggressive/battle and Kendrick's approach to aggression gives a lot more replayability than just punch after punch.

This is kind of disappointing from K-dot. He's doing fine uplifting the rap game by putting out mix tapes and albums. He's already getting acclaim and inspiring others.

Why drop down to this level and just start whining about the state of things like every "underground" and "conscious" rapper out there? Really disheartening...

That's not anger. Passion yes. DMX is anger mann. The new school rappers have had good upbringings. They aren't capable of snatching the throne.DMX wanted that shit. So did 50 and Lil Wayne at one point. Kanye, Drake, Lamar aren't built for that kind of pressure. Neither is Lupe really, but Lupe had to check him because he can. That's why Lamar is not reachable at the moment. So he can answer that NY question. I am sure his answer will disappoint many because he is not about that.

I mean, I love both Jadakiss and Fab, but both of them are not built today to fight this shit. Fab has cashed out and Jada just doesn't have the fire under him, though he's still as consistent as ever.

And your labels for Kendrick or anyone else don't mean shit when the entire game has acknowledged his lyrical supremacy, and not in the last week either. That's part of the message. Kendrick doesn't give a fuck who you are, who you rep, where you came up, who you've sparred with in the past, none of that matters. Step your lyrical game up. Because all you motherfuckers, including the ones you bolded, are out there complaining or are known for not being on top of the world because your "built like that." Kendrick is sonning people's claims to fame in all tax brackets.

I think the verse has a bit more weight in it's message than its merit lyrically, but he accomplished something whether he intended to or not.

So.... Where are the Jada's and Fabo's of NY? Are Flatbush Zombies gonna step up and drop heat on us? Action Bronson?

You've clearly missed the point of the whole verse. It was to galvanize people in the game, particularly those in the commercial new generation to step their shit up. And yeah, Kendrick would be just fine in a diss war. Ain't nothing blasphemous about clowning NY when NY is a fucking joke right now. They live off other peoples sounds, Pitchfork rap, and old flabby versions of once great rappers. They deserve all the shit they get.

Fab is a beast. Don't get fooled by that waterdowned product the past few years. Money is tight mann. Jada can't switch shit up. He is one dimensional. But he is a master at that one thing and that's where Kendrick has to go to if he wants to claim the city of NY. Simple as that.

I'm gonna say what I said in BCT. If these bitter ass mixtape rappers or trend followers would have been making good music rather than spending the better part of the 2000's complaining about the South or rapping like the South, then maybe you would have someone worthy of that claim outside of rappers that have been established in the game 10+ years.

I've never heard Fab without that same monotone delivery and I've never been overly impressed with his bars.

What you don't understand is the weight of that claim. Im fine with the new gen stand off. It really is much needed. But when you claim NY, you better clarify who it is you suggest you are taking it from. Especially if you are not from NY. NY is still Jay-Z, NaS, Jadakiss, Fabolous, Cam'Ron. It's not ASAP Rocky, Papoose, Action Bronson, etc. That's who you are challenging when you say you are king of the city. That's my only disappointment with what Kendrick said on that track. Im sure he will clarify it eventually, but those words hold much weight in the Hip Hop world. You just can't say that and not have it mean something other than I run NY. That's why I appreciate Lupe laughingly suggesting "n*gga you aint Nas, ni*gga you aint Jay Z." He is a baby (prince) to this game.

So.... What's it gonna take for you to say that Kendrick does 'run' NY? I'm assuming your criteria is subjective, because he's outselling all of those guys right now except Jay, on his sophomore album. Fab aint doing shit and Jada already gave up NY rap and is rapping like southern cats with minimal results. Cam'ron is straight irrelevant, seriously, dead career. Nas is making good stuff I guess, but if you go from a an awfulsales/creative nadir to making OK music, everything looks good. Jay is making soulless party music with a corporate stamp on it. Pretty much everyone from NY in the old crowd straight sucks right now and is out of creative steam except Nas.

NYC used to be in the top 2 cities for hip-hop, now I don't even think they are top 4.

ATL, LA, H-Town, and Detroit can be carried by Eminem alone ( but Big Sean and others help ) followed by NYC. NYC hasn't recovered since Biggie died, and yeah they have Jay-Z but he's more of a manager now and less of a rapper. I'm talking about who is relevant and spittin hot fire TODAY, not yesterday and the years before.

Fayetteville more relevant than NYC.
